They can be adapted to store heavy items such as dishes or flower pots, as well as light accessories. And thanks to the side holders, the shelf can also be used to store books.

Hanging kitchen shelf made from wooden boards and ropes

This cabinet shelf is suspended from the ceiling on ropes 2 cm thick. You can make such a shelf using our instructions, with the only difference being that the hooks in this case are attached to the ceiling and not to the wall

Such makeshift shelf from rough wood and ropes will look great in the interior in scandinavian style, in eco and country style, loft and rustic

And now we propose to move on to practice and make such a universal shelf with our own hands.

You will need:

  • 4 wooden boards (2.5 cm thick and any desired length, for example, 1 m long as in our master class);
  • Rope rope about 8 mm thick and 4 m long;
  • Drill and feather drill with a diameter of 10 mm (the drill should be slightly thicker than the rope);
  • 2 steel hooks and dowels for concrete with a diameter of 8 mm;
  • Pencil.

Basic materials needed to make a shelf

Master Class:

  1. With a drill and a pen drill, drill a hole in each corner of the board (pre-draw the markup with a pencil). Remember that the holes should not be too close to the edges.

  1. Paint your board with paint/stain, and then, when the finish is dry, finish with a matte varnish or wax (this is not necessary, but desirable - if you want to protect the shelf from wet cleaning and scratches).

  • If you want to preserve the natural color and texture of the wood, then simply sand the board on all sides with coarse sandpaper or a sander.

  1. Install the steel hooks on the wall: first, make marks with a level, then drill holes with a hammer drill with an 8 mm concrete drill, insert 8 mm dowels into the holes and, finally, screw the hooks into them.

  1. Cut your 4m rope into 4 equal lengths of 1m. Pass the ropes through the holes in the board, and then their ends with reverse side tie the boards in a knot as shown in the photo below.

  1. Now that a pair of ropes has formed on each short side of the board, tie the ends of each pair with a knot and hang on hooks. Make sure the shelf hangs straight and adjust the top knots if necessary. By the way, in the future you will be able to adjust the length of the ropes due to the upper knots.

You can experiment a little with the ways of fastening the ropes and make not only shelves, but even hanging racks with your own hands.

  • Perforator and drill for concrete 8 mm;
  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • Jigsaw;
  • Medium grit sandpaper;
  • A piece of wallpaper for decorating the back wall;
  • Putty for wood.

Master Class:

  1. Cut the dividers out of the plywood/wood plank to the size you want with a jigsaw, then sand them down on all sides with sandpaper.
  2. If the drawer has handles, remove them and seal the holes with putty.
  3. Paint the crate in 2-3 coats, letting each coat dry completely. If you want to achieve a worn effect, rub the drawer in some places with sandpaper.
  4. On the back wall of the shelf, glue a piece of wallpaper cut exactly to its size. You can stick wallpaper on wallpaper glue or any universal glue.

Photo gallery of ideas

If you didn’t like any of the ways we proposed to make a shelf, we suggest looking for ideas in our photo gallery. Here we have collected other examples of wall shelves that you can make with your own hands from wooden boards, the same pallets, boxes and other easily accessible “lumber”.

Making a corner shelf with your own hands is as easy as shelling pears. To make one shelf, as in the photo below, cut a triangular blank of the desired size and with the required angle (rarely internal corners walls are exactly 90 degrees) made of plywood or wood 1.5-2.5 cm thick, as well as two small support bars (the length of one bar should correspond to the leg of the triangular blank, and the length of the second bar should be calculated by the formula: leg length minus width first bar).

All parts must be carefully sanded and then painted or simply waxed / varnished. Next, markup with building level both on the walls and on the slats (note that the holes will be through!). Drill holes in the walls, insert dowels into them and then hang the supports on the screws using the push-through mounting method. It is important to choose the right screw length - it should be calculated according to the formula: dowel length + support bar thickness + screw diameter. Finally, you just have to install the shelves and fix them either with wood glue or with nails / wood screws. If you want to hide the self-tapping screws, use wood putty, and then paint over the "patches" with paint to match the shelf.

Ordinary wooden shelves on the wall, photos of which can be found on the Internet, have sunk into the past. They were replaced by interesting design works that can breathe new life into the familiar interior. Decorating a room with such an element will help solve the issue of filling empty space.

Types of shelves

Each shelf used in the interior is assigned to one of the following groups:

  • Wall. Such structures are attached to the walls with fasteners. They are recognized as the most traditional, versatile and reliable.
  • Corner. Located in the corners of the room, between two walls. Thanks to this option, it will be possible to save space in the room.
  • Embedded. They are usually made from drywall. The peculiarity of the products is that they fit very harmoniously into the interior, as they look like part of the wall.
  • Suspended. Such structures are attached to the wall or to the ceiling. For this, cables, chains, belts, ropes and other materials are used. This original format will especially interest fans of creativity.
  • Floor. Structures located on the floor or at a distance from it are very convenient. They can be moved anywhere at any time.
  • Folding ones are convenient in that they can always be neatly folded as unnecessary. This saves space in the room.
  • Racks are a construction of a large number different cells. Such an element of the interior is multifunctional. You can use both open and closed options.

Wardrobe shelving

  • Shelf module - a structure consisting of several shelves.

Shelves for the room can be made of different materials. The most popular include:

  • wooden;
  • glass;
  • metal;
  • ceramic;
  • from chipboard or fiberboard;
  • using several materials at once (combined).

Not so often there are made of stone, woven from a vine. They look especially original and unusual.

Depending on the design, they can be standard and modern. The latter are carried out with a focus on a specific style of interior, taking into account the fact that the furniture should be in harmony with each other.

Depending on the functionality, they can belong to the group of practical (book, kitchen) or decorative ones. The role of the latter is to give aesthetics to the room. They can be constructed from any material, everything will depend on the taste and preferences of the client.

Accommodation features

You can place it anywhere and anytime. But still there are some nuances that must be taken into account.

  • When planning the attachment point, you should think in advance about whether it will hit the head or other parts of the body. If suspicion arises, then better design shift a little. You can take care of solving such a problem by purchasing with smoothed corners.
  • Despite the fact that the wall in the interior is considered to be a decorative element, they still require decoration. The use of spotlights will look original, due to which it will be possible to highlight both the piece of furniture itself and what is located on it.
  • It is necessary to pay enough attention to the area that remains above the shelves or between them. This space can be highlighted with contrasting wallpaper or colored fabric, hung there a small mirror or a picture, painted. Thanks to such finds, it will be possible to turn the shelf structure into an interesting interior corner.
  • In high-tech or minimalist rooms, compact, strict forms, restrained colors and equipped with beautiful lighting will look best.
  • The Scandinavian interior or loft-style design recognizes wall structures that are both light and massive. In this case, everything will depend on the size of the room, lighting and the amount of free space.
  • For Provence, country, shabby chic styles, vintage or decorated with beautiful carvings would be appropriate.
  • For a classic style, a combination of miniature designs on metal consoles is perfect.
  • Modern involves the use of glass or creative metal products.

Furnish the children's room original shelves today is not a problem.

"House" in the children's room

When designing a children's room, two basic rules are put at the forefront - safety and functionality.

Floor structures and racks must be strong and reliable, because it is possible that the child wants to climb on them. Even those that stand on the floor are recommended to be additionally attached to the wall so that they do not collapse and crush the baby. That is why they are not made high for a children's room.

Designs in the room where the baby spends a lot of time are distinguished by the brightness of colors, can be made in the form of letters, where boxes for toys are placed.

Using a system with multiple drawers will help make cleaning quick. The combination of open and closed is a great find for preschoolers. The fabulous town will be appreciated by both boys and girls.

If the baby has grown up, you can change the design or colors.

Shelves for the kitchen

Furniture in the kitchen should be, above all, functional. This rule applies to them as well. After all, there is not much space in this room, most of it is occupied by lockers. The main task is to maximize the use of free space.

An interesting solution can also be found for very small gaps between the wall and the refrigerator, for example. An excellent option is an exit on wheels, which rolls out, and then completely hides there. This design is very narrow.

There are many ideas to save space in the kitchen. So, for example, if the sink or table is located near the window, then the sidewalls can be used.

The hanging version will look original in the form of a lattice on chains, where all utensils will be attached. However, this option is suitable for cases where the desktop is not near the wall, but moved away from it.

The method of zoning the kitchen-dining room counter will also help save space. Above it, you can install a pendant.

You can, of course, hang the space above the desktop with cabinets throughout the wall, however, it will look hard. This problem can be partially solved with glass doors. But it is much more practical to make open cabinets between cabinets. So it will be possible to give lightness to the interior, and the working area will no longer put pressure on the rest of the space.

To the living room

A shelf on the wall for the living room is an opportunity to realize your wildest fantasies. Some are selected in accordance with the features of the interior. In addition, manufacturers have a huge number of solutions with which it will be possible to give individuality and chic to any room.

For living rooms decorated in accordance with the norms of classicism or country style, eco-friendly wood products are best suited. Thus, not only will an impression of wholeness and harmony be created, but it will also be possible to focus on the natural color.

Usually shelves on the wall are used as decorative element. For small living rooms, this is an opportunity to avoid bulky cabinets.

Whichever model is chosen, be it asymmetrical, modular composition, horizontal long or vertical short version- all of them will look spectacular in the room.

The living room is the face of the room. Here you can safely use frame shelves, designs of unusual, curved shapes or hanging. The main thing is that the chosen option corresponds to the general idea of \u200b\u200bthe interior.

Unusual solution for the living room

Finding storage space is one of the biggest challenges people face when thinking about a design, and after that too. Sometimes even in big room another bulky closet will look out of place, but what if you need to place a collection of figurines or a dozen books? Salvation in such a situation is wall shelves, which will be discussed today.

Types of shelves

Wall shelves, although they are a variety in themselves, also differ in location. Conventionally, they are divided into the following types:

The lightest and most common option, which is attached to flat wall. But precisely because of their simplicity, they provide a wide field for imagination: shelves of different geometric shapes, sizes, arranged in the form of honeycombs or creating complex compositions.

Such structures can be a single plank nailed to a wall, or they can form a silhouette of a tree with each "branch" serving as a storage space. Bookshelves are slanted or asymmetrical. In the ocean interesting ideas there are even round ones, only in the case of unusual figures it is necessary to think over every moment in advance: location, content, fulcrum.

This place is usually empty due to its impracticality, however, corner shelves not only rehabilitate the space, but also help transform the interior. Fastening is carried out on two adjoining adjacent walls. In this case, not only the inner, but also the outer corner can be involved.

The variability in the design of corner wall shelves depends more on materials and decor, but even in itself this solution looks unusual. More often, shelves are used for books or household items in the bathroom, as well as in storage rooms.

As the name implies, these shelves are not attached directly to the wall, but are suspended on ropes - from the ceiling or beam. This design is not very stable, so it is used to store books, not crystal vases. But it is ideal for creating original accents in the room.

It can be installed as one shelf, or several. The first option is often created in the form of a triangle or fit a shelf into a circle. The main thing is to make sure the storage is reliable.

Materials for wall shelves

A wooden plank nailed to the wall is the easiest shelf option that immediately comes to mind. But for modern design this is not enough. The choice of material, even for such a simple product, is quite wide - as are their capabilities.

Wood and derivatives

Even if this is an obvious basis, it should not be immediately discarded. Complex shapes and fastening will help to diversify a wooden wall shelf. For minimalism or a loft, such a solution would be very appropriate. And if you want to fit an element into classic interior, it is recommended to pre-process the details, and maybe even decorate with carvings.

To save on material, you can use MDF, chipboard or plywood - beautiful, simple, practical.

Metal

But metal wall shelves will definitely attract attention and harmoniously fit into the interior, especially if it is high-tech, fusion or, alternatively, minimalism. Only for their installation will need special skills.

Such a base has high characteristics - durability, reliability, strength. And pre-treatment will save you from corrosion.

Plastic

A cheap, pliable, versatile material that can look simple or luxurious, mimicking natural options but leveling out their imperfections. Especially if such a shelf on the wall is full of objects, so guests will not have the opportunity to get to know its details better. For the bathroom - a very good solution!

Glass or mirror

Such a basis has a significant drawback - fragility. A sharp push or impact can damage the shelf, but this will not happen when storing light items. Is it worth mentioning how elegant the glass looks, and how glamorous the mirror surface is? This will give the interior a feeling of weightlessness.

What are the types of fasteners?

You will also have to choose the method of attaching the shelf to the wall on your own - from three options. The reliability and mobility of the structure depends on your decision.

Installation is done with dowels or anchors to the wall. This provides a strong fixation of the entire product, increasing its load capacity and strength. If the shelves are supposed to store heavy items, then this type is perfect. But there is a big minus - it is very difficult to dismantle it without consequences for the wall or structure.

Moderately rigid fastening with brackets and mounting hooks, which is easy to implement at home, unlike the first type. If necessary, they can be dismantled without damaging the shelf, after which a new one can be installed.

Fully in line with modern trends in functionality and mobility, such wall shelves are installed according to the principle of building up: the lower tiers become a support for the upper ones. A variety of combinations of shades or shapes that complement each other look appropriate.

We select shelves for the style of the interior

With high-quality work, the shelves turn into full-fledged furniture, which, like any other item, must be harmoniously entered into the style of the room.

Modern style

Everything here is simple and at the same time diverse: both laconic products from different materials and entire ensembles of various geometric shapes are suitable. Instead of empty embellishment - conceptual aesthetics. The priority is modular or mobile types of wall shelves.

It is necessary to focus on wall decoration: in the case of a neutral coating, you can enter bright designs, and on the side with a bright finish, it is better to do without shelves.

Classic style

Turn around in classical style won't work very well. Wooden shelves on a flat wall, in extreme cases - corner. Brackets can be brought to the fore if they are used and fit the design.

Provence

Provence makes similar demands. Only the processing of the base needs to be approached more carefully. First, use a tree or its derivatives. Secondly, cover them with white paint and, if possible, create the effect of antique furniture. Some carelessness in installation will add charm to the design, but we must not forget about its strength.

Minimalism

To begin with, we note that with this style it is unlikely that it will be possible to put a lot of any “small things” on open shelves - that’s why it is minimalism. To fit a lot of items, it is recommended to provide shelves with doors, thereby hiding disharmony from the eyes. Good looking glass or wooden surfaces- even, smooth, directed strictly horizontally.

Loft

The freedom-loving loft offers us the greatest variety. At the same time, it is not at all necessary to fanatically grind the boards to perfection - slight negligence is quite organically combined with brick walls characteristic of this style.

An excellent option is shelves suspended on a thick rope or an angular structure based on a pipe brought to the fore. In general, the loft allows you to turn the disadvantages of space into virtues, and technical elements- decorative and aesthetic.

Shelf decor

In addition to the fact that you can choose wall shelves with interesting design, they can also be further decorated for greater effect. To avoid the effect of clutter, make sure that the practical content of the products does not conflict with the details.

The easiest option that is suitable for standard wooden shelves is surface decoration. Here you can use all available tools: stencils, decoupage, decorative tape and so on. This solution will look good on neutral walls, for example, painted white.

The Provence-style interior is characterized by the use of textile elements, so why not decorate the shelves with them by laying a few beautifully hanging scarves with patterns? Cozy and practical.

A romantic mood will be given by candles arranged singly or in groups. However, you can experiment with light sources by entering some modern tendencies. For example, wall shelves with backlights look unusual - mounted lamps that gently illuminate the details located on them.

Tubular fasteners on the shelves can be used as a kind of "hanger": for example, for a lamp, towels or a garland. With little effort, a simple storage space turns into an elegant element of the interior.

It would seem that such a simple product, but so many options! But not all of them are easy to implement on your own and, let's face it, even a simple look requires certain skills. Before moving on to creating a shelf with your own hands, check out the basic recommendations that will help beginners in furniture business or experienced craftsmen.

So, before the main process, it is necessary to think over the design in detail and make a sketch. Determine for yourself the purpose of installing the shelf, the intended things that will be stored on it, the location, shape and size.

After evaluating the load, select the material and method of fastening. After that, marking is carried out on the surface of the base, and the material is also cut.

The resulting modules are assembled, a re-measurement is made, which is compared with the markup for fasteners. Next is carried out finishing elements, namely, grinding, tightening and painting, if necessary.

Fasteners are installed on the surface of the wall and on the shelf, after which the parts are fixed, as well as leveling with finishing fixing.

We will tell in this article about the main stages of making wooden shelves with your own hands, about their types and options for interior solutions.

Choosing the material for the shelf

In modern interiors, there are no longer restrictions on the use of one or another material, and everything is used: glass, plastic, iron, wood and other options.

The glass in the room looks fresh, visually expands the space, but among the disadvantages of such shelves is the difficulty of caring for them and the risk of injury, which is extremely important if there are small children in the house.

Tempered glass or triplex is used as a material for such shelves.

Plastic shelves are practical, inexpensive, but collect a lot of dust, and their main drawback is that, even considering their rich color palette, they may not fit well into every interior. In addition, such shelves are more suitable for a bathroom or bedroom, and they are not suitable for creating a single ensemble with living room furniture.

Metal shelves are so original that they will emphasize any room design, and you can choose such shelves for any style. But not every wall will cope with their fastening. Also, metal products are subject to transformation over time, corrosion may occur, and they will lose their original elegant appearance.

Wood remains a versatile choice for creating a shelf. Due to its texture, wood gives the living room a warm and very cozy atmosphere.

Pros and cons of wooden shelves

Wood is the leader in environmental friendliness among all materials. Undoubtedly, wooden details in the interior refresh it and bring it closer to nature.

The main advantages of wooden shelves:

Using texture, color, decor and individual layout, you can create a magnificent interior space.

  • Natural wood, even treated with varnishes and by special means, collects dust much less than a product made from any other material.
  • Wood is a breathable material that does not emit harmful substances into the atmosphere.
  • Wooden parts are easily processed using tools that can be found in any, even a small workshop.
  • Wood is a classic material, familiar to the human eye and relatively inexpensive (unless, of course, the most expensive and rare types of wood are used).
  • The availability of wood still surpasses all other materials for the manufacture of shelves.

But with all its advantages, the tree also has a number of disadvantages:

  • Noble varieties of wood are quite expensive.
  • During production, a lot of waste is generated: shavings, sawdust, bark, and so on.
  • With poor processing or its special absence, the tree can leave splinters on the human skin when using the shelf.

To make a choice about the use of this or that material, of course, the owners, and in this article we will analyze several options for making wooden shelves with our own hands.

Types of shelves

If you have already decided on the material from which you will make the shelf, then it's time to choose the design that your product will represent.

If we talk about wooden shelves, then they are:

Handmade décor items grab our attention

  • Traditional wall; located on the walls, attached to them special devices, brackets on dowels or screws.
  • Suspended; fastened by hanging on belts, chains, pieces of fabric, etc. By the way, fastening on macrame (special weaving from nylon or other similar threads) remains an old, but relevant in modern times, way of placing hanging shelves.
  • floor; as the name implies, they stand on the floor, while they can occupy the entire space of the wall or only part of it, or they can be located outside the support. By the way, such structures can serve for zoning space in a room, for example, for dividing working area heads of the family and a common area for guests and all those present in the living room.

The type and even the material of the shelf also needs to be chosen based on what exactly you are going to store on it. For example, heavy books are best stored on shelves mounted on the wall or standing on the floor, due to the fact that "sources of knowledge" are very heavy. If you want to place a shelf outside of any support (hanging), then you should not put fragile travel souvenirs and other pleasant trifles on it, as well as flower vases, as any accident can move such a shelf.

Fresh flowers in pots should not be placed on wooden shelves, since when watering, some of the water can fall on the surface of the tree and gradually damage it.

So, it would seem that a simple thing becomes a whole art.

Making a corner wooden shelf for books

It is easy to make such a wooden shelf for storing several books or souvenirs. For this you will need:

  • ruler and pencil for marking;
  • jigsaw or saw for making parts;
  • glue for wood (for connecting elements);
  • boards of suitable width;
  • level;
  • elements for mounting the shelf on the wall.

This shelf is perfect for small spaces.

Before starting work, you need to imagine the future product, it is best to make a drawing. Using a ruler and pencil, mark the wooden blank and cut out the details. You need to connect them taking into account the verified vertical, using the building level.

Note: before joining, the parts must be sanded, but the structure must be varnished after the parts have fallen into place.

After the shelf is ready, you just need to attach it to the wall in the chosen place.

Shelf made of wooden planks, hung on straps

To make such a shelf, you only need a few belts of the same length and as many wooden planks How many tiers off the shelf do you plan to get.

Choose leather and durable belts with metal buckles

In addition, prepare:

  • knife for cutting belts;
  • drill for making holes in the wall;
  • dowels, screws, nails.

First of all, make sure that the straps are exactly the same length and width: this is necessary for the stability of the shelf.

If you have several tiers, then attach boards of the selected size to the straps using nails. Align the level so that the shelves are strictly horizontal.

Now you can attach the straps to the wall.

Which tree to choose

Which tree to choose depends only on your personal preferences and solvency. Redwood, rosewood, cedar, beech or ebony are certainly very expensive. But if you use varieties that grow in your area, for example, pine, birch, then you can create quite a budget option interior decoration in the form of a shelf. Of all the above types of wood, it is pine that lends itself best to processing, so it is preferable to use it for making wooden shelves.

Larch and oak are practically resistant to decay, and are also more durable than pine.

Master's advice: it is better to keep any tree before processing for several days in the room where it is planned to use the shelf, so that it “gets used” to the microclimate, humidity and other parameters of the room. After that, you can process the wood as usual.

In case if natural wood too expensive for you, you can use its substitutes: chipboard and similar materials. They are made of wood shavings or sawdust with the help of an adhesive, and on top they are covered with a laminated layer imitating a wood pattern. And, although they are inferior in durability natural material are similar in terms of ease of use. Just like wooden crafts, chipboard shelves fit well into any classic interior.

So, if you put in a little effort and imagination, you will get a unique furniture option for storing books, flowers or small items, including travel souvenirs and photographs. With proper care, such a shelf will serve you for a long time, and when changing the interior it can be repainted, varnished or redesigned, because natural wood, although a renewable resource, is still much more valuable than any shelf made of plastic or other material.
