How to make an iron door beautiful. Do-it-yourself welding of an entrance metal door

  • 27.06.2020

Manufacturers of metal doors offer many models with the most different finishes and accessories. But their cost is sometimes quite high. A metal structure can be made with your own hands, if there is material and necessary tools. Next, consider how a metal door is made with your own hands, and what is required for this.

To do iron door with your own hands, you should take care of the material and accessories in advance. If you buy them separately, you can save a lot. In the manufacture of the structure, it is important to follow the safety rules, work clearly and accurately.

A hand-made metal front door has several important advantages:

  1. The quality of the material used. Some unscrupulous manufacturers try to save on the quality of materials and fittings. If you make the design on your own, then you can buy reliable elements.
  2. Uniqueness. With your own hands, you can create a canvas of any size, the original design of the sash. You can make a door made of wood and metal with your own hands, decorate it with glass inserts. Lots of solutions. Such an activity can become a hobby, a creative process.
  3. Price. With home "production" there is no need to overpay for the brand.

Also, the product can be given the necessary characteristics: to make the iron door as warm as possible, durable.

Drawing preparation

Before you make a metal door with your own hands, you need to create a drawing of it, taking into account the dimensions of the opening. It will help you figure everything out. Consumables, mark the location of the fittings.

To draw up a drawing of a metal door with your own hands, you must first measure the height and width of the opening with a tape measure. Standard door dimensions are 2 m in height and 90 cm in width. If the opening is too large, then you can narrow it by installing a separate block. It is enough to simply sew up the upper part with iron by installing a grate. The side part can be made in the form of a deaf or opening additional sash. Do-it-yourself iron entrance doors with a width of more than 1.5 meters are not made, otherwise the sash will turn out to be too heavy, the canopies will not withstand it.

The door frame should be 2 cm smaller than the opening. This mounting clearance is mandatory. After installation of the structure, all cracks are blown out mounting foam.

If creating a drawing of a steel door with your own hands is a difficult process, you can turn to specialists. But this will require additional money spending.

Necessary materials

The most expensive part of the product is iron. It is necessary for the manufacture of the box and the sash itself. Before you make a metal door, you should study the prices and quality of such material.

The general list looks like this:

  1. Pipe with a section of 40x20 mm. It needs 20 meters to make a door frame about 2 meters high and 1 meter wide.
  2. Steel sheet. The optimal thickness is 2-2.5 mm. Dimensions 1x2 meters. If you plan to make your own iron door from a professional pipe with a cavity inside, then you can take two sheets of metal of a smaller thickness.
  3. Hinges for hanging the sash. The lightest canvases require two loops, but it is better to mount three for reliability. After all, a metal sash with a seal and sheathing is quite weighty.
  4. Insulation. If you decide to make an iron front door to the house, its presence is mandatory. It can be foam or mineral wool.
  5. Lock (one or two), as well as handles.
  6. Decoration material. You can sheathe a metal door with wood, upholster it with leatherette.

Also, for a homemade metal front door, you will need mounting foam, a drill and a grinder with discs, a welding machine and consumables for it. For painting metal, paint, brushes, rollers should be prepared.

How to make a door frame?

Before you make an iron door with your own hands, you need to make a box. It is a metal rectangle, a frame that will include the sash.

Its production takes place according to the following scheme:

  1. Cut blanks according to the scheme of a metal door: four parts of a pipe 2040 mm long (these are vertical racks), 4 parts along the width of the opening with a small gap (allowance) of 5-6 mm. When cutting, you need to maintain an angle of 90 degrees, the edges must be even.
  2. Assemble the first rectangle. Dock pieces of cuts.
  3. Make overlays from the same pipe, placing it flat. You should get a small "protrusion". Assemble the frame on tacks. During work, it is important to check the diagonals of the rectangle so that there are no distortions.
  4. Weld the box. We must not forget that when welding metal doors, the iron heats up and can lead. Therefore, pipes are welded in short sections from the center to the sides. It turns out first dotted line. It then needs to be welded so that a solid seam is obtained.
  5. Process the seams with a grinder.

This completes the production of the door frame. You can see clearly how to weld an iron door with your own hands in the video. Further, it comes through the canvas itself.

Door leaf assembly

You can mount the canvas of a homemade iron door directly on the box.

The fabrication process includes several stages:

  1. First you need to cut the blanks - long and short.
  2. Place the workpiece inside the already assembled box, leaving gaps with the help of clamps. Everything is good to check. Weld the pipes of the iron door with four points by welding (then they will be cut off and all traces will be cleaned).
  3. Do-it-yourself weld a short blank of an iron door with the side parts of the future sash.
  4. Weld one long jumper in the center, it will serve as a stiffener.
  5. After that, you can cut off the tacks, weld the frame completely, clean all the seams thoroughly.
  6. Put a frame on a sheet of metal, weld the metal door with your own hands with strokes of 2 cm to the frame. It is necessary to start welding from the center, moving towards the edges. Then attach the side pieces. At the very end, weld the lower and upper strips.

The base of the door leaf is ready. As you can see, it’s not so difficult to make an iron entrance door yourself. Next, you need to combine the canvas and the box into a common design.

Assembly of the door structure

Before you insert the iron door with your own hands into the box, you need to install the hinges. They may be hidden. It is these canopies that are most often installed in systems industrial production. But on their own at home they are quite difficult to install, it is better to choose the most ordinary canopies with balls. Teardrop-shaped products are good in that you do not need to weld anything to them.

This drop is an eccentric, it sets the desired distance from the box to the door. The canopy needs to be moved apart to make the letter L, place them over the seam between the box and sheet metal. It remains to boil. So it is necessary to fix two canopies. After that, you need to check how well the design works.

The third loop must be welded upside down. This is done so that the sash cannot be removed.

door trim

After the metal base is assembled, it is best to paint the sash. This will protect the metal from corrosion.

Further arrangement of the door:

  1. Based on a do-it-yourself drawing of an iron door from a professional pipe, you should install a lock or locks. The best option - two locking mechanisms different type. To do this, it is necessary to drill a hole in the box for the entrance of the crossbars, and then make a slot for attaching the lock to the canvas.
  2. Attach insulation to the metal sheet. To make a metal door with your own hands, you can take a 4 cm thick foam sheet. It is lightweight and will not weigh down the sash. In addition, it is a tough and inexpensive material that does not sag over time. It is convenient to mount it on metal with a special mounting foam, which does not expand much. All remaining gaps also need to be blown out with foam. You can use a suitable adhesive to fix it.
  3. Top sew up decorative material: PV film, artificial leather, other materials. Do-it-yourself insulation and finishing of the iron door leaf (video) can be done on one side or on both. It depends on the climatic features of the region. It is important that the material exterior finish the front door was resistant to moisture, did not fade in the sun. You can paint the steel door with your own hands with special paint.
  4. In order for the sash to fit snugly against the box, a seal must be installed on it. They are produced with different profiles. The purchase of a specific model depends on the size of the gap. The rubber seal can be self-adhesive, in which case it will not be difficult to mount it.
  5. Finally, you need to adjust the hinges and lubricate them so that the sash does not creak when opening and closing.

A more difficult option is to make an iron door from a corner with a glass insert. It can be decorated and protected with decorative forging. Such products look original. The window must be mounted at the stage of cutting the steel sheet. Metal reinforcement is welded along the perimeter of the resulting rectangle or square. Further, all the steps for making a homemade metal door with your own hands are the same as for a blind sash. After the product is assembled and painted, a double-glazed window is inserted into it and a decorative grille is fixed.

For smooth closing of the sash, it can be equipped with a door closer. It will provide a soft, silent glide.

Making a metal front door with your own hands is a significant savings family budget. It can be equipped with a heater at your discretion, pick up high-quality fittings. Metal products are durable, strong, they reliably protect the premises from intruders. If you still have questions about how to make an iron door with your own hands, the video will help you figure it out.

In the old days, the question of how to make a metal door with your own hands did not bother the inhabitants of our country at all. Sheet steel products appeared in the 90s of the last century and did not look particularly aesthetically pleasing. Their purpose was to securely close the entrance to the dwelling. But over time, steel doors have also become a decorative element of the facade of the building.

The main material is rolled metal. For the manufacture of an ordinary door without a particularly fanciful finish, you need a sheet of metal with a thickness of at least 2 mm and a metal profile for the frame and door frame. A corner with a side of 4.5-5 cm or a professional pipe (square) of approximately the same section is suitable.

The calculation of the material is carried out after taking measurements of the door opening. To be able to qualitatively insulate the joints of the box and the wall, the measurement must be reduced by 1-2 cm around the perimeter. After installation, the gaps can be filled with mounting foam and to exclude the flow of cold air into the gaps.

Frame measurements are taken on the inside of the box after it has been made. For the simultaneous purchase of material in the calculations, you can use the dimensions of the door frame. In addition to the perimeter of these parts of the door block, you need to calculate the dimensions of the frame stiffeners. Their number and arrangement is quite arbitrary and should be developed independently. To find out the amount of a corner or pipe, the lengths of all the details of the box and frame are summed up and another 10-15% is added for processing.

The calculation of the metal for the door leaf is done based on the size of the box. The outer part of the canvas should overlap the joint of the frame and the box by 1.5-2 cm around the perimeter. The inside of the door can be sheathed not with a metal sheet, but with MDF, clapboard or other lumber. If you want to have a completely iron door in the room, then the parameters of the inner sheet must match the dimensions of the frame frame.

Entrance metal doors can be insulated using XPS boards, mineral wool (Isover) or similar materials. The gaps between the pieces of foam and frame racks are easy to fill with mounting foam.

Some doors have not standard sizes. Too wide or high opening, the arched entrance must be divided into parts, one of which should be equal to the approximate dimensions of a standard front door (no more than 1.5 by 2 m). For the rest, develop a design sketch using separate fixed frames sheathed with metal. Often they serve as a decorative frame for the opening and include small windows, wrought iron elements or other finishes.

Having picked up the materials, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • grinder;
  • welding machine;
  • drill with drills for metal;
  • building square and tape measure.

For the final finishing of the door, you will need fittings, a lock, hinges and related decorative elements.

Making an iron door

Before you make an iron door with your own hands, you need to cut the metal into parts of the required length. To make the box even, without skew, you will need to measure its diagonals before starting welding. To mark the ends of a corner or pipe, you will need a construction square or a template with a 450 cut. Attach the tool to 1 side of the corner or to opposite sides of the professional pipe, mark the cut line and cut off the excess part of the metal according to the marking. In the same way, prepare the ends of the upper and lower extensions and side profiles.

It is necessary to fold the parts, joining the cut ends. Measure 2 diagonals of the rectangle with a tape measure. They must completely coincide, only then can all the angles be considered right, and the sides equal in pairs. Eliminate the identified defects with a grinder, cutting the corner in the right places. Determine the location of the lock and cut holes for the tongue or bolt.

Weld the parts of the box. After the metal has cooled, grind the welding spots with a grinder so that in the future the canvas fits snugly around the entire perimeter of the box.

How to make a canvas frame

Carefully measure the inside of the box. In order for the door to move freely in the opening, subtract 1 cm from the measurements of length and width. When manufacturing and installing the frame, this will allow gaps to be formed around the perimeter of the door.

Trim the prepared parts in the same way as the parts of the box, at an angle of 45 °. Lay out the frame inside the box, inserting pieces of metal 5 mm thick to fix the gaps. Measure diagonals and correct defects if necessary.

Make marks at the place where the lock is installed. Take out the profile, which will have a lock and cut a hole for the crossbars. Reconnect the frame parts inside the door frame, check the alignment of the holes. Weld frame corners with inside. In several places, weld the door frame to the frame by welding.

Cut out the middle vertical stiffener from the metal. There may be 2 if the owner deems it necessary. Between the stiffener and the edge of the door, make a small frame for installing the lock: weld 2 short profiles horizontally and put a plate between them, if this is required by the method of fastening the lock body.

Cut and weld horizontal or inclined stiffeners inside the iron door frame. Their number and location is arbitrary. If the door will have a decorative window, frame it inside the frame

Install 2-3 loops so that their card parts are inside the gap left during assembly. Attach the assembled hinges to the corresponding parts of the frame and box by welding. Install the lock, adjust it for easy entry of the crossbars into the holes. If necessary, make a keyhole in the plate installed for fastening, cut the thread for decorative overlays on the frame. Remove the lock.

How to make a door leaf

The sheet of metal must be marked according to the measurements taken from the frame part. On the porch and horizontal parts of the door, the overlap on the frame should be at least 1-1.5 cm. In the back near the hinges, leave an overlap of about 0.5 cm or more, but so that it does not interfere with opening the door later.

Put the fabric under finished box connected to the frame. From the inside, weld the sheet to the frame. Cut off the welding seams made to fix the box, open and close the door. If all operations were carried out accurately and accurately, then a do-it-yourself metal door will move freely.

Having opened the door leaf, it is necessary to finally weld the hinges tacked in the draft. So that the welds do not interfere when closing, they are cleaned with an angle grinder (grinder). In the right place on the canvas, make a keyhole and threaded holes for a decorative overlay. Finally fix the lock in its place, check its operation and adjust if necessary.

Interior door trim

The master finishes the inside of the door with his own hands according to his own taste:

  • plywood;
  • clapboard;
  • chipboard.

Usually, a metal sheet is not placed on the inside, which makes the massive structure a little lighter and saves on rental. If the frame was made of a professional pipe, then the trim can be attached directly to it. The corner will require additional embedded elements of wood. They can be fixed on the door frame with self-tapping screws screwed into holes pre-drilled in the corner (side).

To insulate an iron front door, mineral wool or polystyrene is placed between the stiffeners and the frame frame. Elastic material such as mineral wool easily fills the entire space. Styrofoam or XPS has to be cut into pieces that may not fit snugly against frame parts. You can seal the gaps with mounting foam.

When the insulation is laid, it will not be difficult to attach the inner lining to the embedded bars or pipe yourself. If desired, upholster the surface with leatherette or leather, paste over with fine wood veneer or decorate in another way. You can leave the decor at the discretion of the hostess of the house, so that she does it with her own hands. Fix the box in the opening with anchors and fill the gaps with mounting foam. Glue the seal.

The door can simply be painted with automotive enamel from a balloon. Finishing options include the use of forged elements. You can buy or order exclusive patterns in the workshop. If the door has a glass insert, then the wrought iron decor will provide additional security, playing the role of a lattice. If desired, the outer part of the door can be finished with wood, strengthening the panels or veneer on the metal using reliable universal glue or self-tapping screws.

Nowadays, finding a metal door to your liking is not at all difficult. However, some owners, feeling self-confident, make the front door on their own. Usually this is due to the desire of a person to create something different from other samples to suit his requirements, or maybe using specific materials or geometric and design requirements. One way or another, the creation of a metal front door with your own hands deserves special mention.

Material and tools

It may not be the easiest thing to do, but if you have the necessary skills, you can take it on. The more competent the owner, the less time he will spend on work. In order for the process to be successful and without any problems, you will need the following tools and materials:

- Steel sheet with a thickness of 1.5 mm or more;

Metal corner;

Door hinges(selected according to the quantity determined by the strength of the hinges themselves and the power of the door);

- Lock, door knob, peephole and other details;

- Sheathing material (veneer, plywood, board - depends solely on your preference);

- Construction foam;

- Anchor bolts;

- Welding machine;

— Bulgarian with a disk for metal;

- Welding table or goats for the convenience of work.

The list is only approximate, since the creation of the door is partly a creative process, and the design of the door may vary depending on the author's idea.

Create a door frame

Before starting work, you need to find out the exact dimensions of the doorway. And not just accurate, but complete. That is, a layer of plaster or door frame is an obstacle that must be removed before you get to the concrete or brick end of the wall. You need to get to the real wall material in all four directions, so knock down the plaster or make a cut in the casing with a hammer and chisel.

Typically, the standard dimensions of a doorway range from 800-900mm wide and 2000mm high, but in any individual case, the parameters may be non-standard.

When you have the exact dimensions of the doorway in your hands, the dimensions of the door frame will immediately become clear. The door frame must fit in the opening so that there is a gap of 20mm on all sides. This value is enough to properly install the door in the event of a skewed opening. After completion of work, this gap will be filled with mounting foam.

The first thing to do is to cut a corner of the desired length according to the size of the future box (the length of the shelves can be 50x25mm) and lay it out on a plane (a hob is best) in the form rectangular shape. You can check the corners of the future door frame for “straightness” by measuring the lengths of the diagonals. If they are equal, you can start welding the corners.

Making a door leaf (video)

Before you start making door leaf, first make a frame. The frame is made based on the fact that between it and the door frame there should be a gap equal in the overall standings to 20mm in height and 15mm in width. The correct distribution of gaps on all four sides will be indicated below. Next, a corner of the desired length is used (a 40x25mm corner is suitable for this), with which a rectangle is also laid out, and welding begins.

It will be necessary with the help of a grinder to cut a cutout for the lock in the profile. Hammer wooden slats of the desired length into the frame, so that later it will be easier to make door trim. The next step is to weld the hinge profile to the hinges themselves and door frame. This will make welding easier.

The distance between the hinges is carefully measured, both on the box and on the door frame, since an exact match is needed. After that, we put the frame inside the box and make sure that everything is parallel to each other.

And here is the most important step - the manufacture of the door leaf. Such a part of it is cut out of a sheet of steel that will overlap the opening by 1 cm on each side, except for the one where the lock is. This side should overlap by 1.5cm.

It is important to remove the scale remaining on the edge of the sheet after cutting.

Now we lay the sheet so that the upper and lower edges of the box protrude by 10mm, from the side of the lock by 5mm, from the side of the canopies by 15mm. At several points, the sheet begins to cling to the box.

Next, turn the box over, and our sheet is at the bottom. The door frame, meanwhile, is inside the box. It's time to set the gaps between the door frame and the frame. From the threshold, this distance will be 10mm, as well as from above. On the side where there is a lock, it is 8mm, and where the loops are, it is 7mm.

To fix the gaps, you can use various improvised means, such as metal strips of different thicknesses.

It's time to weld the frame to the sheet. The seam itself should not be longer than 40mm, and the distance between the beginnings of the seams should be about 200mm. Welding is carried out from the middle to the edges from different sides, a reverse step is used. If the future door starts to get very hot, give it time to cool down.

Installing door hinges

Before starting the installation of the hinges, the future door must be raised above the hob. This will help pieces of a profile or pipe on which the product can be placed.

For the manufacture of loops, a 20 mm steel bar is taken. To make the hinges work better, a ball from a steel bearing is placed in them. Then the loops are assembled and fixed, while you need to make sure that everything is exactly correlated with each other. Once you are sure that there is a clear match everywhere, the hinges are welded to the box and canvas.

The upper part of the loop will be welded to the sheet, the lower part will be welded to the box. After welding the loops, you need to cut off the tacks that attached the sheet to the box.

Now it only remains to clean the welds and paint the finished door - and it will be ready.

Place for a castle

The door frame corner shelf is where the cutout for the lock will be made. Moreover, the cutout must be made so that the lock enters there without the slightest gap. As soon as you can put the lock in place, you will need to make markings for the mounting holes, the places where the key will be inserted, for the handle, and others. According to the markup, holes of the required size will be drilled.

Holes are made around the perimeter of the door for 4mm screws, with which the boards will be attached from the inside. One of these boards should have a cutout for the lock. The length of the screws is selected within 35-40mm.

Cutouts for the latch and various latches are created only after the box is installed and with the door hung, then the door peephole is also installed.

Finishing work

Not all owners will agree to stop there. After all, you can decorate the door and give it an attractive appearance. Can be used as cladding wooden slats, soft material or plain film with wood grain texture. Of course, painting is the easiest option of all. It allows welding of decorative forged elements on top of the door.

Traditional faux leather upholstery always gives the front door a warm feel. Soft upholstery gives a seemingly rigid door some softness

In addition to the fact that you will save significantly, you will also gain invaluable experience, which can become Starting point to create something even more complex and interesting.

A do-it-yourself metal door often surpasses many factory samples both in quality and reliability. After all, it is not for nothing that they say that a house is a small fortress, and the front door is a fortress gate. And it's hard to add anything to that. After all, if entrance doors are ordered on the market or in a supermarket, this is not yet a guarantee that the doors are of high quality and reliable. On the other hand, often the situation associated with the need to weld and put a temporary structure for the period of repair makes the idea of doing everything yourself quite real and relatively cheap.

Do-it-yourself metal door - from idea to practical implementation

Conditionally, an independent embodiment of the idea of \u200b\u200bfolding from sets metal pipes, plates and corners a real metal front door does not require much experience in locksmith work. True, you must immediately admit that it will be difficult to assemble a metal door with your own hands. But with a thoughtful organization of work and the availability of a tool, many mistakes can not only be avoided, but also corrected in time.

First of all, you need to determine what kind of structure it will be:

  • light temporary construction for the period until a real armored door is purchased;
  • a structure that is planned to be built for a certain time as an entrance door to the corridor from the landing;
  • a normal front door to an apartment or house with a heater and a reliable lock;
  • a monumental building for centuries with a firm belief that the door will protect against any vandals.

Based on this, the forces, time, and necessary materials are calculated. The whole process of work is planned from taking measurements to installing the outer and inner door trim. Conditionally, the door profile pipe do-it-yourself is created in several stages:

  • the initial stage - taking measurements, preparing a drawing, selecting and ordering materials, preparing a tool;
  • the stage of working out individual nodes and connections, preparing a slipway or assembly table for work;
  • creation of a door block, welding of doors, fitting, installation of locking devices, installation of a metal sheet;
  • installation of a door in a doorway, fixing, finishing;
  • installation of sheathing and internal filler, adjustment of systems.

This scheme of work, although it contains a large number of points, but with a phased implementation, their excellent result will be guaranteed.

Preparatory stage - how to get started

It is not difficult to guess that a do-it-yourself iron door is created from metal pipes, corners, channels and sheet metal. But it is worth starting work with the organization of the workplace and the selection of a tool for work. At the same time, it is worth remembering that there is no such thing as a small tool. Having always learned to work with one tool, it turns out that it is more convenient to use several more tools for work. So for normal operation you need to prepare:

  • metal ruler, scriber, tape measure, metal square, crayons;
  • grinder with a set of cutting, cleaning and grinding abrasive wheels;
  • with a set of drills for metal and a center punch;
  • a welding machine, here it is preferable to choose an inverter one, today it is the best choice for beginners;
  • hammers of different weights;
  • files for metal - triangular, round, square, flat;
  • magnetic holders - multi-profile, with a mandatory angle of 90 degrees;
  • clamps, clips, clamps;
  • be sure to wear a welder's mask and leggings for working with hot metal.

The next point is the organization of the workplace, because before you weld the metal door yourself, you need to at least prepare a platform for laying out all the elements for fitting. It is ideal to have an assembly table or workbench for this, but you can first prepare a simple flat area on concrete or OSB.

A do-it-yourself metal door being built will require the following materials:

  • metallic profile 20x40 mm - 22-24 running meters;
  • sheet metal - 1x2 meters with a thickness of 2.5-2.8 mm;
  • hinges for fastening the door with bearings;
  • lock with overhead handles;
  • to fill the internal volume;
  • insulation and material for the outer and inner door trim.

Marking and preparing parts for assembly

At the stage of preparation of parts, the design of metal doors, the drawing of which is drawn on a scale, is drawn in the form of separate drawings - the study concerns how the parts will be attached and what the sequence of work will be. Detailing drawings makes it possible to minimize errors and waste when cutting metal.

When transferring drawings to metal, you need to have a clear idea of how a metal door is arranged, which elements require special accuracy, and for which it is necessary to make a gap of 1-2 mm. For the door frame, it is important that all parts are manufactured with the least deviations, especially if the profile pipe is butt-welded at 45 degree cuts.

The first step is preparing the door frame. Tolerances on the outer part should be no more than 1 cm in relation to the doorway. But inner part should be perfect in all planes.

Do-it-yourself metal door, the drawings of which are developed taking into account the installation safe locks with fixation at several points of the block must be reinforced with an internal frame made of a profile pipe or angle.

In the process of laying out the details of the door block on the mounting table, the installation location is determined:

  • anchor bolts for fastening the block to the wall;
  • door hinges;
  • lock holes and fixation of the safe mechanism;

Even before welding the hinges to the metal door and connecting the block into a single structure, it is recommended to drill the necessary holes in the profile, and only after that proceed with the final assembly.

Assembly of the door block

When creating a metal door with your own hands, assembling the door block and the frame of the door itself have a lot in common. In both cases, this is an assembly of simple rectangles. Assembly technology using welding of joints of profile pipes at an angle of 45 degrees provides for:

  • preparation of a profile with pre-cut corners;
  • laying out all the details in one plane;
  • verification internal corners door block;
  • with the help of several touches of the electrode, the structure is literally caught in one piece;
  • using a square, the correctness of right angles is checked, and internal diagonals are measured with a tape measure;
  • the entire structure is welded with a structural seam.

Before welding a door from a profile pipe, a ready-made door block is tried on at the opening site. Further, with the help of the cleaning and grinding wheels of the grinder, the influxes are removed and beautiful even seams are formed.

Assembling the door frame

Entrance door do-it-yourself metal is welded using the same technology as the door block, with the only difference being that its dimensions should be as accurate as possible from the outside of the structure.

In fact, the door block in this case can be used as a template for laying out parts and fixing the frame before welding. The first step during assembly is welding door hinges. The details are adjusted so that the gap between the block and the door itself is 2-3 mm from above, but from below the gap needs to be made larger - up to 3-5 mm. When used in the design of simple garage hinges, they must be welded on top of the frame and block. For loops concealed installation you need to provide additional space in the door block. To do this, it makes sense to make the side of the fastening of the loops from a pipe of a larger section. A bottom gap of 5-7 mm between the door and the block is needed because the armored door is welded from 3-4 mm metal with your own hands, and the weight of the door eventually makes the working out in the hinges, gradually lowering the door.

After welding the hinges and the guide, they begin to weld the frame of the door itself. The door block is placed horizontally, on flat surface. Using the level, its position is checked. Pipes cut to size with wooden planks, laid out by level inside the block. The gaps between the door frame and the block are installed using wooden wedges or plastic crosses for mounting tiles.

Further, as with the block, temporary fixation is carried out with separate points. After checking the angles and diagonals, the final welding of all elements into one. After welding the door frame, the entire structure is lifted and checked in a vertical position. If the door opens and closes easily, without touching the block, you can proceed with the installation of internal spacers and locks.

When forming the frame, all elements must be fixed in the same plane. Metal during welding tends to deform. As a result, do-it-yourself home-made metal doors turn out to be curved.

Installation of the lock and locking fittings

In the question of how to weld a metal door with your own hands, there can be no trifles. Especially when it comes to security. Installation of the lock and safe hickeys must be carried out in the process of manufacturing the door frame.

Until the frame is sheathed with a metal sheet, it is convenient to make holes in it and install a lock. When placing the lock, it must be borne in mind that the armored door, however, like any other, can be lowered during operation. This means that the locking mechanism should also be placed so that when the door is lowered, it cannot jam.

The gap between the lower part of the lock tongue and the lower part of the hole in the block must be no less than the gap between the door and the threshold of the block. When marking the mounting hole on the door frame, this fact must be taken into account. Alternatively, you can cut an opening in the door frame to fit the lock mounting plate. Then, just make a mounting plate from a metal strip and weld it into the case from the inside.

The second installation option involves making a slot in the door frame pipe and processing it with a file to right size. True, while the lock can interfere with the closing of the door. It simply will not allow the door to close if the gap between the frame and the block is less than 4 mm.

Metal sheet installation

The final assembly step metal structure The doors are installed tight doors on the frame. Sheet marking is carried out last, when the whole structure is ready.

Before you weld a metal door with your own hands into the final design, it is recommended to attach a block to the sheet. Circle it with chalk to visualize how much metal and from which side you need to remove.

External loops when installing the sheet must also be outlined. Since in the sheet it will be necessary to specially cut openings for them.

Having adjusted the sheet to size, it is installed on the mounting table and the door frame is placed on top. Welding is carried out with reverse polarity, the fact is that when using thin metal, it simply begins to deform or at the welding points, a burn is formed - a hole in the thin metal. If the polarity is reversed on an inverter device, the risk will be much less.

Welding of the sheet and frame is carried out with thin electrodes with a diameter of 2 or 2.5 mm. Never use electrodes with a diameter of 4 or 5 mm. Welding is carried out in one direction - gradually pressing the sheet to the frame. The length of the weld should be no more than 1.5-2 cm. In this case, the distance between the seams should be 5-6 cm. When welding a sheet and a pipe, welding is done on both sides of the pipe in a checkerboard pattern.

You can learn more about the order of work and work on individual elements by typing in a search engine - how to make an iron door with your own hands.

We make a metal door with our own hands - video

In stores, you can choose metal doors different models and sizes. They can be entrance and interior. You can make your own door. This requires materials, tools, skills and abilities to work with iron.

Making a metal structure with your own hands has a number of advantages over buying finished products. With a minimum of costs, you can get the front door to the apartment without alterations doorways. At self-manufacturing metal doors must comply with the rules safe work, at each stage, perform all operations accurately and accurately. Advantages:

  • choosing your own material for manufacturing, you can be sure of its quality;
  • can be made with an individual finish option;
  • you can make an iron door in a budget option.

Doing it yourself can save you a lot of time.

Measurements and drawings

Making metal doors with your own hands begins with drawing up the simplest drawings. To do this, measurements of the doorway are made. The width is measured in several places. Then the minimum value is selected. 1.5-2 cm is subtracted from the resulting figure. This size should remain gaps between the door frame and the walls of the opening. The dimension is transferred to the drawing. Similarly, the height of the future product is measured. According to the data obtained, a profile or corner for welding is prepared.

Tools and materials

Self-welding metal doors is cheaper than purchasing a finished product. But you can’t make an iron door without the skills to use tools and a welding machine. To work, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  1. metal profile or corner;
  2. door leafs made of metal sheets;
  3. steel sheet 2 mm thick or more;
  4. building loops;
  5. door fittings: locks and handles;

  • electric drill;
  • construction foam;
  • anchor bolts or other fasteners;
  • grinder equipped with a disk;
  • welder;
  • veneer;
  • facing material.

Other tools may be needed. It depends on the model of the welded structure. Well, if the home workshop has a workbench and a few clamps.

Stages of assembly of steel doors

Do-it-yourself iron door at home is created in several stages:

  1. production of a metal frame of the product;
  2. creation of a durable door leaf;
  3. installation of high-quality locks and handles;
  4. surface cladding.

Standard dimensions of the door frame: width - 90 cm, height - 2 m. If these conditions are met, you can make an iron door with your own hands.

Stage 1: weld the loot

For the manufacture of a door from a profile pipe or from a corner to an apartment or private house material needs to be cut. In cross section, the profile should be about 50x25 mm. The blanks are cut according to the dimensions on the drawing and placed on the welding table. The next operation is measuring the diagonals. Both of them must be equal. When you have achieved such indicators, you can start welding. The finished work is checked again: they measure the diagonals, the dimensions of the internal space. If the work is done correctly and correctly, the welds are cleaned.

Stage 2: frame under the door leaf

The canvas should be located in the door frame at a small distance from its inner edges. In this case, the canvas sheet should protrude beyond the outer edges of the frame. Welding of the structure is carried out with short seams. Their length is up to 4 cm. They are located at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other. After welding work and checks geometric parameters the seams are cleaned with a grinder and sandpaper.

Stage 3: fixing the sheet

The cut sheet of steel is welded to the finished frame. On the slam of the future door, you need to leave about 10 mm on each side. A sheet of the desired size is superimposed on the frame and welded. Work begins with the hinged part of the door. Welding is carried out with suturing inside the cavity. The canvas is welded around the entire perimeter. To give the product greater strength, you can use the installation of stiffeners. The work ends with cleaning the seams and painting the door leaf. Coloring well protects metal from corrosion.

Stage 4: how to weld the hinges

Loops for metal products are made of steel rods with a diameter of about 2 cm. The hinges are welded to the frame and to the canvas. The halves of the loops should match with each other. To do this, carefully measure the distance when installing them. Subject to this condition, the door will easily be put on the box and will close and open well. After welding, the parallelism of the profiles on each side is checked. assembled door. Be sure to carry out anti-corrosion treatment.

Stage 5: we cut the lock

The structure is almost ready. It remains to insert locks into it. It is recommended to install two locks of different types. To enter the bolt of the locking mechanism, you need to make holes in the corner. In the canvas, it is necessary to make holes and slots for attaching the lock body. This is done by the master himself, along with holes for keys and pens.

Stage 6: cladding and insulation

To give the product a beautiful appearance and heat-shielding qualities, doors are insulated and outer lining. Used for cladding different materials: vinyl artificial leather, artificial leather, PVC film, leatherette, wood and much more. PVC film can be with imitation of wood texture. Some owners paint products in desired color and decorate them with forged decorative elements. Profiled metal sheets or elements made of soft materials are also used.

Folgoizol can be used to insulate and improve sound insulation properties. It fits inside the door leaf, a layer is placed on it mineral wool, polyurethane, polystyrene or other insulation. The remaining gaps are filled with sealant. To improve sound insulation, a rubber strip is glued. The entire package of insulation and insulation is closed with a sheet of plywood or MDF, which is attached to the structure with screws or liquid nails.

Stage 7: Installation

Installation of the finished door structure is carried out by two different ways. The entrance door can be located in the same plane with the wall. In another case, on the wall on its inner side there are slopes of great width. Most often, doors are installed using metal plates. They are attached to the box in three places along its long sides. The opening is cleared of foreign objects and debris. The door is installed and aligned in level and plumb. For this, wooden or plastic wedges are used.

A perforator makes mounting holes in the wall. Metal rods 10-15 cm long are hammered into them. Anchor bolts can be used instead of rods. Installation is done like this: the owner himself needs to repeatedly check the quality of the installation. Incorrect installation will cause binding or jamming of the locks. Before filling the gaps with mounting foam, it is imperative to check the ease of operation of the locking devices. If everything works well, the voids are filled with foam.

In cases where the door is installed inside the wall, installation using anchor fasteners is used. In this case, a welding machine is used to fix the door. The finished door structure is installed in the opening and secured with wedges. In the vertical racks of the box, 3 holes are drilled. Through them, pieces of a steel bar 10-12 cm long must be driven into the wall. The remaining ends are welded to the frame. After that, the operation of the locks is checked again, the voids are filled with mounting foam.

The manufacturing and installation technology of the door, with the exact fulfillment of all requirements, is simple. It should be noted that it is easier to make a door with your own hands if 2-3 clamps are used for welding. If you have to cook door structure for the first time, do not be upset by her ugly appearance. Appearance can be changed when facing surfaces. Decorative overlays will hide all the flaws of an inept master. The next product will be much better.

Do not use a thick sheet of metal. The product will be heavy. A thickness of 1.5-2 mm is sufficient. The profiled pipe should also be with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm. For the door leaf, you must use at least 4 horizontal partitions. After cutting the elements, the ends should be well processed. Remove all rust from the blanks with a wire brush and sandpaper with large grains. They need to be welded to a sheet of metal with small seams located 10-12 cm apart.

The finished product must be degreased and coated with two layers of primer. After drying, paint the product twice with paint. The service life of homemade metal doors is no less than that bought in a store.
