If you live in an area where winters are cold, it is recommended to use a plate with a thickness of at least 5 cm. For a milder climate, products with a thickness of up to 4 cm are suitable.

How to fix?

Warming balconies and loggias with your own hands requires knowledge of the sequence of actions. it is not difficult to mount, but the method of installation depends on how the finishing will be done. If you plan to use plastic, the plates can be fixed with dowels. It is best to use fasteners with a length of at least 8 cm. If you plan to plaster the slab, you can glue and fix it with a dowel.

If you use penoplex, you don’t need it: the plates will hold well without it, and the presence of wood will not only increase the mass of the structure, but also make it colder, since wood has the ability to freeze through. If you plan to finish the finish with drywall, then the crate must be installed on top of the foam.

The material can be replaced with polystyrene foam if you do not have enough funds for repairs, however, it is not an analogue and is inferior to foam plastic in terms of thermal insulation quality.

Stage three

It must be remembered that during the arrangement it will be necessary to carry out light, air conditioning, a “warm floor” system, and possibly water. All this is important to foresee before choosing a method of insulation and take it into account when installing it.

The main types of heaters used in do-it-yourself balcony insulation technology include:

  • Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene), consisting of cells of environmentally friendly expanded polystyrene, effective at high humidity. Refers to cheap types of materials, most often used for insulation of residential premises. Proper installation and operation retain working properties up to 30 years.
  • Penoplex (plates). Medium-hard material with good thermal and waterproofing parameters, slightly superior in cost to polystyrene foam. When processing a balcony or loggia, extruded foam plastic with a thickness of at least 30 mm is recommended.
  • Polyurethane foam. Rigid and high-strength material suitable for thermal insulation of complex (non-standard) balcony structures.

  • For internal works(waterproofing, vapor barrier) use penofol, foil polyethylene, which prevents freezing and the occurrence of cold bridges. During installation, overlaps and joints at the junctions of the enclosing structures should be avoided. Connections are fixed with adhesive tape (aluminum).
  • Underfloor heating, which allows to save the height of the room due to the total thickness with a heat-reflecting film of no more than 4 mm.

How to choose a heater for a balcony

Probably no one wants to heat the street at their own expense. Therefore, the insulation of the balcony must be approached responsibly. Before starting insulation work, you need to carefully seal all the seams and cracks, and then proceed to the insulation of the balcony.

Another important point. The main insulation is best done outside. This, firstly, will prevent the appearance of moisture in the cold season, and also save the area inside the balcony.

There are many parameters for choosing a thermal insulation material, these are thermal conductivity, vapor permeability, waterproofing. durability, fire resistance, environmental friendliness and weight.

The main characteristic of insulation is thermal conductivity, which shows how this or that material retains heat.

The density of the material is the weight of 1 single cubic meter insulation. The weight of the balcony structure depends on the density of the heat-insulating material. Naturally, you need to choose lighter materials so as not to additionally increase the load.

Penofol - reflective insulation. This is a multilayer material, which consists of polyethylene foam of different density, structure and thickness, and foil.

The material quickly hardens and does not require additional fasteners. It sticks to all surfaces except water and film

The layer turns out to be continuous, while all the bumps and cracks are filled, which is important for additional waterproofing.

Penoplex is an extruded polystyrene foam. Due to its structure, penoplex has low water absorption and low thermal conductivity. Great for warming the balcony outside.

Styrodur - green extruded polystyrene foam from BASF, has good thermal insulation, low water absorption and high strength properties.

Expanded polystyrene is an environmentally friendly, non-toxic heat and sound insulating material that has established itself as the most economical and convenient for insulation, having low thermal conductivity and vapor permeability.

Izover rolls or sheets of mineral wool based on fiberglass of the highest quality. It provides effective heat and sound insulation, and is used for structures where the heat-insulating material does not bear the load.

How to insulate a loggia

Loggia insulation is painstaking and time-consuming work. During thermal insulation, many questions arise regarding the quantity and type of materials and tools. To prevent the leakage of thermal masses, it is necessary not only to glaze the loggia, but also to insulate the ceiling and floor surfaces, parapet, walls and the corners between warm and cold walls. If the walls border on unheated premises or the street, then thermal insulation is carried out without fail. In some cases, it will be necessary to lay a parapet if it is absent or does not match the window structures.

Quality and balconies provide for obtaining from the inside a closed space with thermal insulation of all surfaces, that is, the effect of a thermos.

Self-insulation

The technology of warming balconies and loggias, with some skills in the field of construction and the use of modern types of heaters, is available for do-it-yourself work.

The procedure begins with glazing, which is performed using plastic structures (2-chamber double-glazed windows). At the top and along the edges (walls), the installation of expansion profiles is required, which is necessary in the following steps.

Plastic elements increase aesthetics, but do not general temperature in room. Further insulation of the perimeter with high-quality materials is required.

Underfloor heating system

The next stage, which includes strengthening the walls and ceiling, is carried out with a combined heat-insulating coating. Expanded polystyrene (35-55 mm thick) is fastened with dowels, and the joints and seams are filled with foam (mounting).

The second layer is laid out polyethylene (inside the room with a layer of foil), which has a vapor barrier effect and provides insulation also due to heat reflection. The seams are fixed with special tape.

To reinforce the floor, a layer of polystyrene foam plates is laid, then foil polyethylene (up to 15 mm thick).

The base of the floors on the heat-insulating layer is carried out by one of the methods:

  • Screed, the thickness of which must be at least 40 mm with a temperature gap (up to 10 mm). After it hardens, a tile or other type of coating is laid on top.
  • Arrangement of a warm floor, the laying of which is carried out according to the manufacturer's technology, providing not only insulation, but also heating.
  • Laying the floor with lags. Wooden logs are placed on top of the insulation, fixed with screws or foam. Flooring is placed on them in the form of boards, plywood, OSB, followed by flooring.

The initial stage - glazing

Works on the insulation of a balcony or loggia are designed to preserve heat, the source of which is a warm floor or electric heaters. In this case, the electrical wiring must be installed before the interior trim is placed.

High-quality insulation of loggias or balconies is a layer of special materials(waterproofing and heat-insulating). External insulation prevents moisture from entering from the outside, and internal insulation prevents moisture from entering from the inside.

Features of external and internal insulation of the balcony

Balcony insulation options are available as follows:

  • external;
  • internal.

Initially, according to the norms of SNiP, it is recommended to insulate the balcony exclusively from the outside in order to avoid the formation of condensate and the accumulation of moisture inside the balcony room.

If it is not possible to perform external insulation, internal insulation is performed, based on the features that each type of balcony insulation has:

  • the material for the insulation of the balcony must be protected on both sides with a foil (polypropylene) layer, which is necessary to prevent moisture condensation inside the insulation. Condensation is facilitated by the temperature difference at the boundaries of the insulation (bordering on a cold parapet and in contact with warm internal air).
  • The foil barrier protects the insulation from the penetration of water vapor into it and, accordingly, eliminates the condensation of steam inside the insulation, thereby not reducing the thermal performance of the insulation and preventing the appearance of mold inside the room due to accumulated moisture.
  • The attractiveness of the external insulation of the balcony is determined by the so-called dew point - the point at which the temperature difference causes water molecules to condense. With external insulation, the dew point is moved outside the room, and even if moisture penetrates through the hydro and vapor barrier into the insulation, negative processes will occur outside the balcony.

Device nuances

In itself, the process of warming the balcony room, in fact, is nothing difficult. The difficulty lies in the fact that, along with the installation of the insulator, other work is required. As such, they have nothing to do with isolation, however, they must be implemented in conjunction with it.

If we proceed from the laws of physics, then the insulation must be organized from the outside, that is, from the cold side. Then the floor, ceiling and walls will move into a warm zone with positive temperatures. This allows moisture vapor coming out from the inside, without accumulating, to freely go out through the insulation layer.

However, in practice, it is impossible to insulate all parts of the balcony from the outside. It remains to be limited to the internal version.

Where does moisture come from

The usual insulation design for a balcony is:

  • warm balcony;
  • insulation layer;
  • external fence located in the cold zone (outdoors).

The absence of moisture is only a matter of time. This is just evidence that the insulation and other related materials are still able to hold it. At the same time, he himself remains wet and, in addition to losing his properties, turns into an ideal place for the development of fungus and mold due to constant dampness.

How to avoid condensation

There are two common technologies that will help to really insulate a balcony and practically forget about condensate.

Vapor barrier

This balcony insulation technology involves the use of a special vapor barrier layer, a vapor barrier, which is installed directly in front of the insulation. The method is quite versatile and is used with a heater of any vapor permeability, including those “afraid” of moisture.

The most common plastic film or foil can act as a vapor barrier. The use of a vapor barrier is especially effective in dry construction and allows for a wider use of finishing materials, for example, instead of drywall, you can take MDF or wooden lining.

However, it must be said that the presence of a barrier is not yet a guarantee of the absence of condensate. It is also necessary to observe the correct sequence of layers in the protective structure.

An obvious advantage of the described technology of insulation of standard balconies is the complete absence of so-called "wet processes". The only exception is puttying joints when using drywall sheets.

When installing a vapor barrier, all seams are sealed with tape. With all the advantages of this design, this method also has a certain drawback - the wall will not “breathe”. For the release of moisture from the room, it will be necessary to provide other methods of ventilation.

The use of insulation with low vapor permeability

With this technique, the installation of a vapor barrier is excluded, and the absence of condensate provides a material with low vapor permeability. Using this technology, foam plastic can be used, while mineral wool cannot be used - it does not have the necessary properties.

In order for the balcony to constantly remain dry and warm, it is necessary to choose a material whose thickness simply does not allow moisture to accumulate in large quantities. In other words, the appearance of condensate can be avoided if the insulation creates a pair of normal resistance.

The structure will look like:

  • external balcony railing;
  • glue;
  • appropriate insulation;
  • glue;
  • reinforcing layer in the form of fiberglass;
  • glue;
  • finishing materials.

Styrofoam construction

As an example, let's analyze the structure of a foam structure. Regardless of its variety, the foam is attached to the protective structure using special adhesives. After the initial hardening, the insulation boards are additionally fixed with dowels with large plate-like caps (“fungi”) for greater reliability.

Next comes a reinforcing layer of the same glue:

  • the surface of the foam is cleaned with a coarse-grained sandpaper (2-3 mm),
  • apply glue,
  • a fiberglass mesh resistant to various alkalis is embedded in it (cell size - 5 × 5),
  • apply another additional layer of glue.

That is, the fiberglass mesh is in the middle of two adhesive layers - only in this case it can perform a reinforcing function.

The application of putty is started after the hardening of the reinforced layer. What to do next depends on individual preferences. The puttied surface can be painted, wallpapered or applied decorative plaster with one texture or another.

In any case, you need to know that only the presence of a vapor barrier or the use of a material with low vapor permeability will ensure comfortable use of the balcony area.

Insulation options

Having considered the properties of materials, you can consider options for warming the loggia.

  • If you consider the likelihood of fire to be very significant, then mineral wool is the best option. Yes, and in terms of thermal insulation, this is a very good option. But, a good mineral wool is much more expensive than polystyrene foam.
  • If you are looking for the most thermally insulating option, and you can protect the insulation from fire, then the best option is to insulate the loggia with PPU (polyurethane foam). However, this is also significantly more expensive than insulating balconies or loggias with foam plastic.
  • If you select the optimal combination of price and quality, then this is expanded polystyrene (foam plastic). Moreover, fire-retardant materials are always at hand, for example, the same drywall.

  3. When insulated with polystyrene foam, the plates can be fixed directly to the walls and ceiling with dowels. After that, the surfaces are leveled with putty and painted, or a crate is placed by fixing the bars to the foam blocks or concrete through the insulation. Lining, plastic, drywall and other finishes of your choice are calmly attached to the crate.

Note! To fasten the battens to the concrete ceiling through the expanded polystyrene, you must use special screws for concrete - frame dowels.

When insulating a balcony with mineral wool without wooden frame not enough. Cotton wool can also be glued, but it is quite difficult to plaster it with your own hands. The technology of thermal insulation of balcony floors differs from walls and ceilings, since the “pie” of insulation must carry certain dynamic loads and have flat surface. Alignment is carried out by laying wooden logs, between which a heater is laid, and a finishing coating is laid on top. The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Cut a wooden beam into crossbars along the width of the balcony and fix them to the floor with anchors or self-tapping screws and dowels using steel corners.
  2. Fasten 3 longitudinal logs to the crossbars on self-tapping screws. In the process, they must be aligned horizontally, starting from the highest point. Using the building level, the beams at the intersection with the crossbars should be raised and plastic or wooden wedges should be placed.
  3. Between the crossbars and the log, lay the insulation tightly. In the case of mineral wool, a vapor barrier must be laid on top of it.
  4. Lay a floor covering with fastening to the logs.

It is characteristic that the length of the crossbars and the log does not need to be adjusted to the dimensions of the balcony. It would be more correct to make them shorter by 10-20 mm so that the ends do not rest against the walls. Wood has the ability to "breathe" and deform a little; with a tight fit, the floor surface may later arch.

Moreover, walking on such floors will be accompanied by an annoying creak. The resulting gaps near the walls will hide under flooring and become invisible.
