How to become an interior designer

Since childhood, I liked to engage in creativity in different manifestations. She was fond of not just drawing, but voluminous paper layouts, origami. At the age of nine, I got into a children's architectural and art studio, where I successfully studied for six years. I have the warmest memories of my studies. As I understand now, it is very rare when teachers empathize and support students so much. The studio was able to give not only a sense of taste and knowledge of art history, but also patience and perseverance, which later came in handy at the university.

In high school, I dreamed of finishing school as soon as possible and enrolling in the architecture department of a university in my city. It felt like I was wasting my time at school. For the entire 11th grade, I was preparing for applicant courses - twice a week for three hours there was a drawing, on Sundays - mathematics. In the summer, drawing classes continued every other day for three to six hours. At the Faculty of Architecture always big competition. For admission, you must pass two exams in drawing for six hours each and a test in mathematics. I barely passed the points for the budget form of education.

The training itself was not easy. I was surprised by acquaintances from other universities who still worked full-time from the second or third year. Architectural higher education is considered one of the most difficult. Duration - six years of full-time education.

Classical education usually does not include training computer programs. If a person wants to become a designer, they will have to take a 3D visualization course at least. Otherwise, as one of my supervisors said, working in your specialty is much more useful than additional training in a fashionable school. After moving to Moscow, I just wanted to enter the same school with an international diploma, but changed my mind.

In general, design education is very subjective, and because of the high demand, the quality of education is declining. There are no professional standards and licenses, so you can complete some second-rate courses and be called a designer. One-day webinars, seminars, meetings with famous designers. Sharing experiences and networking with peers can be really rewarding.

But for a designer, the main thing is a portfolio. Orders depend on the quality and quantity of work done. With student papers, few will consider a candidate. Of course, in addition to this, the ability to communicate is also important.

Features of work

Now I have been working as a designer for two years with an architect friend. When you work together, ideas are even more carefully selected, everything superfluous is cut off. In the process of joint activities, the division of responsibilities occurred by itself. I am mainly engaged in the selection of furniture, materials, decor, negotiations with customers, communication with sales managers for the purchase of equipment for the facility, filling content and portfolios in social networks and thematic sites. The partner is engaged in the design of a planning solution, technical drawings, 3D visualization.

Stages of work on the project are standard. Preliminarily, there is a meeting-acquaintance with the customer, a discussion of the project and wishes, a technical task, the contract is signed. But more often all this is already combined with a visit to the object for detailed measurements of the apartment.

Then the first and fundamental stage of the design project is the creation of a planning solution, because without a competent and convenient layout in beautiful interior will make little sense. This is one of the most interesting stages of work. We usually offer several drastically different options. After that, usually one of them is finalized according to the wishes of the customer. The second stage of work is 3D visualization. On it you can see a picture of the interior as a whole. Real furniture, materials and fixtures are selected. Before starting work, we discuss with the customer the favorite analogues of interiors and colors. The last, third stage is working drawings. It includes detailed diagrams location of electrical and plumbing fixtures, doorways, bill of materials. So that the builders and you do not have any difficulties in the repair process.

The next step is the design process. The success of this stage depends on many factors. If the planned budget for repairs is clearly discussed, there is no constant throwing from side to side, the project has been fully agreed and approved by all family members, and a more or less qualified and experienced construction team has been hired for repairs, then problems should not arise.

My working day usually starts with answering emails e-mail and social media posts. It takes some time. Most of the time it takes to search for analogues of the selected items of furniture or materials at the request of the customer or in case of problems with the timing / cost. Then I usually contact the sales managers to remind them of the promised proforma invoices or to discuss any questions that have arisen. Sometimes only in the late afternoon it turns out to do current projects. It happens that I spend the whole day with the customer on the road to select materials and furniture. The congestion is seasonal: summer is the hottest time. During this time, I sometimes hire assistants to do visualizations.

In Moscow the competition is very strong. There are probably several thousand interior designers. For example, there are two more designers with the same last name and first name as mine in the capital. But many occupy their niche, a certain target audience. For example, our customers are mostly young couples aged 30-35, the budget for repairs is small, but they are open to everything new and modern.

For small design studios or private designers, word of mouth is relevant. Since the design and renovation of an apartment is a responsible and rather personal matter, people often turn to recommendations from relatives or acquaintances. In addition to this and paid advertising, there are different ways attracting customers. There are many thematic sites where you can post a portfolio and participate in discussions, consultations, and write articles.

The cost range for a design project is 1,200–1,600 rubles per square meter, depending on the scope of work and area. The complete project includes 3D visualization, working drawings and selection of the entire configuration. After completing the design project, it is advisable to plan joint trips with the customer to furniture and materials showrooms. Usually one or two is enough to see live how everything fits together, and in which case to pick up analogues. The cost of the trip is 3,500 rubles, and usually takes six to eight hours.

A design project is a constant dialogue between a customer and a designer. The participation of the client is very important, as the interior is always individual. Each family has its own wishes and view on future home. Many customers develop friendly relations.

Of course, there are unusual wishes of customers. In one bedroom for a girl, the use of effect ceilings was a prerequisite starry sky, a round four-poster bed and an electric fireplace. And other clients asked to build a safe for storing documents in a closet in the laundry room. On the first floor apartment building in the historical part of the city there was a desire to make a basement with a rest room and a bathroom (the Moscow Housing Inspection did not agree on such changes). Once, customers were asked to rely on the scheme and recommendations of Vastu (the Indian analogue of Feng Shui).

Salary

Earnings are very different, as the payment is piecework. Maybe 20 thousand, and 200 thousand rubles a month. On average, over the past year, about 80 thousand rubles a month came out, if we consider a two-month vacation as paid. I know this for sure, because for the convenience of calculating income and expenses I use a special application. The total amount consists not only of the payment for the design project. There are also such income items as architectural supervision, interest from the sale of author's 3D models, writing articles, affiliate programs of suppliers. Sometimes designers offer, for example, furniture by agreement with the supplier. As a rule, normal designers make sure that these prices are beneficial for the customer, and do not cheat from above. In this case, the designer receives 2-5% from the supplier - for example, he gets 20-50 thousand from the entire assembly of an object worth a million rubles. Funny money. But for a designer, it is more profitable and more interesting to lead the entire project from scratch to its full implementation.

This year, the work has become less, and customers have become more selective and demanding. In recent months, income has halved: now it is about 40 thousand rubles. But I like that I have free time. I hope that in the summer - during the season of repairs - everything will be restored.

10 thousand rubles a month are spent on housing - we rent a "kopeck piece" for three. I drive a young man's car, it takes 2,000 rubles for gasoline. I spend most of my time at home, I eat mostly at home too. Spending on food - about 10 thousand rubles. Of the last major expenses - a driving school for 60 thousand rubles and braces for 140 thousand rubles. I plan to buy reflex camera for 55 thousand rubles to try your hand at interior photography of your projects. To print projects on A3 in color, I have already purchased an inkjet printer for 10 thousand rubles. Sometimes samples of materials, tinting fans of paints from different manufacturers are needed for work.

In my spare time I ride a bike, rollerblading, snowboarding. I like to just walk around Moscow, now some innovations are constantly appearing: parks, pedestrian zones, bike paths are being ennobled. This makes me incredibly happy as a designer! Just dreams become reality beautiful pictures urban environment and landscape design are brought to life.

I like to go on vacation for a long time - for two, four, six weeks, because it's hard to see something in a week. Just have time to take a break from the flight, and fly again. In addition, the cost of a flight is usually a significant expense item in a trip. Over the past two years, she has traveled to the UAE, Israel, Jordan, Abkhazia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and India. 90% of the time I prefer solo travel organized tours. It is often possible to find promotions with cheap tickets. The cheapest tickets are to Israel on the Red Sea coast for 1,500 rubles round-trip. It turns out to have a rest basically only on a trip, since during normal hours work is almost seven days a week. So I try to go somewhere more often. I hope to travel around Russia with a tent this year.

Before answering questions about how much an interior designer earns, what determines the level of payment for his work and on the basis of what factors the cost of a design project is formed, we note what knowledge and skills a designer should have.

Constructor, artist and designer - a combination of basic working skills that an interior design specialist should have. Creativity problem solving and attention to detail will be a good addition to the skill set. In addition, for effective interaction with a client, it is also desirable for him to have such personal qualities as discipline, responsibility and goodwill.

A number of factors affect a designer's income.

- Economic and social situation in the country and region.

- Type of employment (independent work or for hire).

- Scope of work and type of object (apartment or house, public or residential space).

A hired interior designer receives an average of 30% of the cost of the entire order. At the same time, the search for clients, providing the designer with a workplace, special programs and consumables for printing albums of drawings and related test documents - all this is done by the employer.

In the case of independent work “for himself”, all of the above issues are solved by the designer, while earning several times more. In other words, the designer has a higher level of responsibility in this case. He acts as a project manager, he also develops a design project, completes the facility and conducts architectural supervision, although some work can be delegated.

The more successfully completed projects behind the designer, the wider the range of his work (residential, public, commercial interiors), the more positive feedback about his activities, the higher the level of his professionalism. Accordingly, he can ask for a higher price for his work.

As a rule, an interior designer evaluates his work by square meters of the floor of the room being developed. Average the cost per square meter varies from 500 rubles (for novice designers) in medium-sized cities of Russia up to 2000 rubles and more in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In fact, the upper bar of earnings is difficult to determine. The income of "star" designers is determined only by themselves.

Factors affecting the cost of a design project

1. Most often, the cost of a design project is calculated based on the area of \u200b\u200bthe room and the volume of the order. If the order is large, the designer can offer the client a small discount.

2. The cost of the designer's work is influenced by the style of the space being developed. Creating an interior in a historical style requires more effort than in a modern one. For example, classic interior will cost the customer more than a loft-style interior.

3. The services of a well-established designer with an impressive portfolio are obviously more expensive than those of an aspiring designer, who must offer a competitive price for his work.

Extra income for a designer

Assistance in selection and purchase building materials with customer accompaniment in stores. Such trips are negotiated and paid separately.

Partner discounts and bonuses from suppliers of materials, components, furniture and fittings. The designer works with clients according to catalogs and agrees on terms of delivery and terms of work with suppliers.

It must be said that the opportunities and incomes of interior designers in different countries vary. For example, in Europe, almost all new buildings are rented with a fine finish, but very schematic. About 70% of the owners of such apartments immediately after the purchase seek to make repairs and, accordingly, will turn to the help of a designer to create an interior.

However, for Europeans there is no concept of a "repair team" or "a company that performs the entire range of construction and finishing works." For every direction, be it electrical, plumbing, tiling or plastering work, there are narrow specialists with the necessary licenses or certificates for the relevant type of activity. The customer concludes a contract with them, which is covered by a guarantee of the quality of the work performed.

In North America, not the metric, but the empirical system of measures is more common. The calculation of the projected area does not take place in square meters, and in square feet. In addition to the usual calculation of the project cost based on the floor area, designers in America also work according to the following schemes:

The "cost plus" system, when the payment for the designer's services is formed only from a percentage of the total cost of materials, furniture and accessories that he purchased for the client. The designer is entitled to about 20%.

The fixed cost of the project is the case when the designer, having studied all the initial data and compiled offer, agrees on a fixed price for the project.

It is worth noting that in order to conduct design activities in America, membership in a professional design association is required, that is, obtaining a certificate or license to work as a designer. The initial conditions for obtaining such a license is the availability of specialized education. The participation of the designer in seminars, additional courses and other educational events that increase the level of his professionalism is also welcome.

Note that in Russia, to work as a designer, you do not need to be a member of the Union of Designers of Russia. It is enough to master the skills and gain knowledge of the profession of an interior designer in any art university where there is a specialization in the following areas:

Design of Architectural Environment.

Theatrical and decorative art.

Design for various areas applications.

Upon completion of the training, a freshly baked designer begins to gain experience in practical activities. Additional training courses, master classes, trainings in various areas of design are a good help for a novice designer. Experience and continuous self-improvement in the profession are fertile ground for generation interesting ideas and creating bright design projects.

An interior designer is a profession in demand today with decent pay. Such specialists are needed both in companies providing interior design services and in stores selling equipment and finishing materials for home. Self-employed designers will always find clients in the face of apartment owners, country houses and commercial premises.

How well will this pay? prestigious job will depend on the designer himself, his experience, professionalism, ability to timely complete design projects, solve current problems and communicate with customers and partners. Due to the fact that there are no restrictions on the growth of professional skills and experience in the profession, the salary of an interior designer is a vector value.

Many wealthy people appreciate exclusive clothes and individual interiors. In this regard, creative professions are in high demand. And it is important for novice specialists to get an answer to the question about how much you can earn by choosing the specialty of an interior or clothing designer?

interior designer income

The salary of an interior designer is rarely fixed. It depends on several factors:

  • reputation
  • experience;
  • skill;
  • creativity;
  • productivity.

A professional designer at least needs a higher education in the specialty. Customers' trust in such an employee is initially higher than in people who have completed intensive training courses.

Interior designers who do not have much experience will not immediately be able to claim decent fees. First of all, you need to understand the specifics of the profession, while at the same time earning a decent reputation for yourself.

The salary in Russia for those wishing to start activities in the field of interior design is 20,000 rubles. In turn, designers with a good portfolio are especially in demand in the labor market. The level of their remuneration is set from 40,000 rubles.

Young professionals who have recently come to work in this area are offered at least 25,000 rubles in Moscow. Designers with experience can get a salary of over 50,000 rubles. BUT large companies and they promise more than 80,000 rubles to a worthy applicant.

It is better to start a career in a respectable company. This will provide stable income and provide permanent employment. But do not forget that the designer in such cases receives no more than 30% of the cost of orders.

In addition, you can provide services for the design of premises on your own by organizing individual entrepreneurship. How much the designer earns in the end depends only on the efforts made by him, professionalism and the number of orders.

clothing designer salary

The remuneration of the fashion designer is unstable and depends on:

  • product positioning;
  • quality characteristics of materials;
  • brand;
  • performance.

Specialists have to compete with more affordable ordinary people shops where prices are much lower. Clothing designers are not in demand in all regions of Russia. In cities with a small population, there is practically no decent income. For example, in the Vladimir region, fashion industry specialists are not required at all. You can only get a job as a seamstress, which is unlikely to satisfy a creative person.

Any fashion designer at the start of his career should participate in competitions and shows, try to be remembered by his potential clients for his unique style and quality of work. This will help you find regular customers and ensure good earnings.

It is better to start your way in fashion design in a team of professionals. Well-known fashion designers offer to graduate from their own schools and laboratories. For example, Vyacheslav Zaitsev provides an opportunity to be trained in his studio. After such a school, a fashion designer can easily find a well-paid job.

In the regions, the work of a specialist is estimated at 15,000 - 20,000 rubles. If you have experience, the salary increases to 35,000 - 40,000 rubles. In Moscow, the fees are much higher. Young specialists are offered from 40,000 rubles. Fashion designers who have long been engaged in the design and tailoring of clothes can get a good job. Large fashion houses sometimes require chief designers. Salary starts from 160,000 rubles.

You can work for yourself. To do this, you need to interest customers in your services. Because the number of orders directly depends on how much the specialist will receive for the work done.

The remuneration for the work of domestic couturiers is significantly inferior to the fees of Western colleagues. Purchasing power in Russia is falling, few can afford expensive clothes. Specialists have to find a balance between materials and income of the audience of potential customers. Even top fashion designers are seeing declines in sales.

How much a clothing or interior designer will receive for his work depends on him. In order for customers to give expensive work, it is necessary to create a good reputation, and the specifics of the profession require constant study fashion trends and following them. At the same time, the chance of finding a well-paid job in Moscow is higher than in the regions.

The salary of designers varies depending on the direction, skills and education, location. For example, an expert in landscape design receives 120,000, and an interior designer - 100,000. A beginner can receive about 15,000, and the job will become profitable only if you have experience, in this case, the salary can be 150,000 rubles and even more, it already depends on specialization.

For this specialist, the following knowledge and skills are important:

  • fundamentals of ecology and botany;
  • principles of geodesy, construction;
  • Knowledge of Corel Draw, Photoshop and others.

The starting salary in some regions ranges from 20 to 30,000 rubles per project. Closer to Moscow, you can take 60,000.

But, sadly, not everyone manages to find a job with a high salary, first of all, this is due to the high competition in the labor market. A freshman with a recent college or college graduate shouldn't expect to earn more than $30,000 a month.

To earn good money you need experience starting from 3 years.

Interior designer

Interior design work is in demand and well paid, no less than the work of an architect, for example. The work of interior designers usually consists of:

  • project development;
  • drawing up drawings;
  • sketching;
  • online consultations;
  • decoration;
  • control over the entire process of creating an interior;
  • calculation of the material and its cost.

Again, work experience is of great importance, so a less experienced designer has an income of no more than 25,000, in Moscow the amount reaches 38,000.

Those who have completed more than a dozen successful projects can earn up to 100,000 per month. Payment by region is shown below:

Game designer

Since games have become popular, there has been a growing need for people who can create a game world, fantastic animals and creatures. You need to have knowledge of computer graphics and understand the motion industry. Pay will depend on experience and region.

The average salary in Russia is 45,000, for a senior specialist - 80,000.

Also, the specifics of the game designer's actions will affect the income. For example, an illustrator receives from 60,000 to 120,000, and a layout designer from 40,000 to 80,000. While a 3D designer's salary ranges from 50,000 to 150,000.

Salary of game designers in 2018:

The profession is in demand, but not so relevant for some regions. For example, in the Vladimir region, such specialists are not required at all. Education and knowledge will not be enough, talent and taste are needed here.

If the designer works in a small studio, then the earnings will be no more than 30,000 rubles per month.

In larger firms, according to average statistics, the salary reaches 100,000.

Now let’s take a closer look at how much fashion designers earn:

Web designers

This includes graphic designers who do not have to go to the office, so most professionals in this field work remotely.

Web designers develop websites, accounts for various companies and even large firms. Their earnings will depend on the client base, experience, education and portfolio.

Advantage for graphic designers will be the ability to create miui.

The salary will vary from 20,000 to 70,000 rubles, depending on the complexity of the order. For example, you can make an avatar for 500 rubles, and a larger project, a landing page, already costs 1,500-3,000.

Portfolio

This is the calling card of any designer. Here is what information is placed in the portfolio:

  • illustrations of previously completed projects;
  • mandatory job description;
  • resume, where experience, education, reviews are indicated;
  • personal information about yourself.

Almost all designers can go freelancing, vacancies can be found on special exchanges or in social networks, on job search sites via the Internet. But we advise you to remember that it is better for beginners to take less paid jobs in order to gain the necessary experience.

Depending on the request of the customer, the amount of payment can be from 500 to 3,000 per project.

For many, it will be preferable to work in an office, with a fixed schedule and rest 2 times a year. Which, of course, will be different from freelancing, where the designer works on a free schedule remotely. In the office, payment can reach from 40,000 to 100,000 per month.

Payment abroad

If a designer knows a foreign language like a native one, he can try himself on foreign exchange sites. In the US, design specialists are more valuable, and earnings are an order of magnitude higher.

The salary of a designer abroad is $300-600 per hour.

Knowing all the basics and understanding what industry the designer works in, you can plan your income, which will depend on some factors:

  • availability of higher education;
  • knowledge of the principles of work;
  • design skill;
  • freehand drawing;
  • knowledge of programs and the ability to work with them.

Recall that the earnings of any designer will depend on experience, talent, education. A young specialist in this sense will not be so lucky, since he has not developed a client base, has not thought out his own style. If a beginner works in an office, then he is unlikely to be entrusted with a large project, again, due to lack of experience.

The main task of an interior designer is not only the rational design of space and zoning, but also the creation of an exclusive environment, beauty and comfort, satisfaction of the aesthetic tastes of the customer. Workers in this profession are mostly creative individuals.

Consider how much an interior designer earns in different places.
