Floor skirting board what to choose by color. How to choose a floor plinth

  • 29.08.2019

When arranging floors with laminated products, any home craftsman is faced with the problem of which plinth to choose for the laminate. The beauty and practicality of the mounted one depends on the competent answer to this question. flooring.

The plinth, as many know, is a special strip. It is installed at the junction of the floor and walls in the room in order to hide the gap between the indicated surfaces. Such strips serve as a decorative function and, in addition, they protect the walls from dirt during cleaning.

Laminate skirting board

Modern manufacturers offer us a huge selection of all kinds of skirting boards. Such products are primarily subdivided into different types depending on the material of their manufacture. The slats to hide the gap are:

  • wooden;
  • polyurethane, plastic and foam;
  • from MDF;
  • ceramic;
  • veneered;
  • aluminum.

Laminate flooring matches perfectly with wooden skirting boards. Veneered strips and MDF products are suitable for the coating we are interested in. If you want to save on repair work, you can install it on laminate and plastic skirting boards. But experts in the field modern design do not advise doing this. In their opinion, plastic products do not go well with laminated boards.

If you want your flooring to have an attractive look and fulfill its practical tasks, purchase solid wood skirting boards for your laminate floors or cheaper ones made of MDF (wood fiber) or veneered. In this case, you will be able to create a truly harmonious interior. Solid wood planks are highly durable and completely environmentally friendly. For expensive types of repair, such products are ideal.

But here it is worth noting that the installation of wooden skirting boards is associated with certain difficulties. An inexperienced home craftsman is unlikely to be able to independently install such planks in rooms with rounded walls and in rooms with non-standard geometry, natural wood bends poorly. Solid wood products, among other things, have a high cost. For this reason, more affordable veneered skirting boards are often used instead. The inner layers of such products are usually made from inexpensive wood, and valuable species go exclusively to the upper part.

Wooden skirting board

It is easier to install veneered strips with your own hands, and their external characteristics are not much different from the properties of skirting boards made of natural wood.

If you plan to spend a minimum of money and still get a beautiful laminate floor, you need to choose products to hide the gaps, made from wood fibers using the vacuum pressing method. MDF skirting boards are inexpensive and have good performance. A special paper painted in one shade or another is glued to the surface of such strips. Top it is covered with a melamine-based mixture. The latter guarantees enough reliable protection products from mechanical damage.

MDF skirting boards are often called laminated. The technology of their production is identical to the methods by which the laminate itself is made. And one more nuance. Wood fiber planks are water resistant. When using them, attach increased importance to this feature of the material, otherwise the skirting boards will not last long for you.

Recently, when carrying out budget home repairs, polyvinyl chloride strips are increasingly used, in which the presence of a cable channel is initially provided (in which you can hide electrical wiring and other wires). Not everyone likes PVC skirting boards. The unnaturalness of their appearance is immediately noticeable. But on the other hand, such products are resistant to mechanical damage, they are not afraid of water. And most importantly, the installation of PVC strips is as simple as possible.

We think that you have already understood how to choose a plinth for a laminate, taking into account the material of manufacture of the products considered in the article. Now let's deal with the color of the planks.

Installation of skirting boards

When choosing the right shade of skirting boards, follow these tips:

  1. The color of the planks must not be discordant with the overall interior design of the entire room, as well as directly with the shade of laminated boards.
  2. A visual increase in the size of the room can be achieved by using skirting boards and laminate of the same color.
  3. It is undesirable to purchase planks that are darker (or lighter) than the color of the laminate flooring by more than one tone.
  4. Light strips (respectively, the laminate itself) are relevant for those decoration options when you want to make your room as light and filled with pleasant emotions as possible. It is worth considering important detail... Light-colored products are easily contaminated. Prepare to wash them often and thoroughly.
  5. Planks and are selected taking into account the peculiarities of the operation of these premises. Products with light shades are rarely used in such cases.
  6. Original interiors allow the use of dark planks for light laminate and vice versa. But in this case, you need to correctly design the interior. Sometimes the desire to make it original leads to not the best results.

Choose the right skirting board for laminated flooring, take into account our advice, as well as its manufacturers, and then you will be able to create a truly flawless interior in any room of your home!

The final stage of the repair in almost all cases is the laying of the floor covering, which comes after the finishing of the walls, ceiling and subfloor. When choosing a floor covering for your floor, it is recommended to choose a baseboard along with it. Of course, you can do this after laying the floor covering, but not always in this case it will be possible to choose the exact plinth that will be combined with the floor.

The main purpose of the skirting board is to close the gap that forms between the wall and the floor. In addition, it transforms the look of the entire room. If you pick it up incorrectly: the wrong color or ugly small repair, the impression of the renovation may fade away, it will look slightly unfinished. If you choose it correctly, then this will enhance and emphasize all the advantages of the design and decoration of the room. In addition, modern products have grooves for passing cables through them.

Varieties of skirting boards

Skirting boards by material of manufacture can be:

  • plastic (including rather flexible modifications);
  • wooden;
  • from MDF.

Wooden skirting boards

Wooden skirting board does not lose its popularity, even with other modern materials. Especially wooden skirting boards are preferable for expensive parquet flooring. In most cases, a plinth of the same type of wood is chosen when laying wooden floors. It is desirable to purchase it together with the coating itself. This will allow you to select products that are identical in color.

  • strength;
  • durability;
  • environmental friendliness.

Disadvantages of wood plinth:

  • susceptibility to fluctuations in the moisture-temperature balance;
  • relatively high price.

Installation

The installation of wooden skirting boards is most often performed on screws with dowels or on self-tapping screws that have flat heads. At the same time, the condition for the installation of such skirting boards is smooth wall, as otherwise there is a possibility that they can deform and crack. It is also not recommended to glue them to the wall with liquid nails - later it will be difficult to peel them off, and internal stresses may arise in the wood, which contribute to deformation.

MDF skirting board

MDF skirting board is produced on the basis of wood fibers using hot pressing. In order to imitate a woody structure as well as create different colors on the front side, paper is applied, which is impregnated with dyes. A special melamine coating is applied over the paper for protection.

Advantages of MDF skirting boards:

  • ease of installation;
  • low price;
  • antistatic;
  • resistance to moisture and ultraviolet light.

Disadvantages of MDF skirting boards:

  • lends itself to mechanical stress;
  • fragility.

Installation

To fasten the MDF skirting board, first fasteners are screwed to the wall, after which the skirting board is put on them. Thanks to this fastening, in the future, they can be quite simply dismantled. If there are slight bends, they can also be fixed to the wall, as they have a certain amount of flexibility.

Plastic skirting board

This type of skirting board is quite popular today. This is due to the fact that it is resistant to external influences, cheap enough and does not undergo deformation. The shape of a plastic skirting board can be embossed and straight. In addition, such skirting boards may have a flexible edge that fits snugly against the wall. In most cases, plastic skirting boards are disassembled into the front and the fixing parts. And the presence of a hollow structure makes it possible to hide various wires inside the baseboard.

Advantages of plastic skirting boards:

  • resistance to temperature changes;
  • moisture resistance;
  • the presence of cavities for cables;
  • tight fastening to the wall and floor.

  • fragility;
  • low strength.

Installation

Installation of plastic skirting boards to the wall is carried out on the fixing part using self-tapping screws or glue. Then a front strip is put on top, which is installed in the mount using clip-like grips.

Flexible skirting board

This type of skirting board has been on sale quite recently. It finds its main application if there are curved boundaries of the floor and walls. Due to its flexibility, it takes any shape, edging various decorative elements and smooth curves of the room. Flexible skirting boards are made from plastic with slight molecular changes. To preserve its properties, it is stored in special packaging.

Flexible skirting board can take any shape

Advantages of flexible skirting boards:

  • the ability to take the required form;
  • resistance to moisture.

Disadvantages of flexible skirting boards:

  • skill required during installation;
  • relatively high cost.

Installation

To install a flexible skirting board to the wall, the carrier profile is initially fastened with self-tapping screws. Then the front profile is heated with hot air or water so that it acquires a plastic state, after which the fastener segments are fastened. After that, the skirting board hardens, providing the desired shape.

Choosing a floor plinth

  1. In most cases, the choice of a plinth is made according to the following parameters:
    - based on the floor covering;
    - textures and colors of the walls;
    - textures and colors of the door.

    Sometimes, as a design solution, the skirting board can be chosen on the contrast of the color of the floor and walls, but in this case you need to have a subtle sense of taste.

  2. If the floor will be laid from parquet, solid board, parquet boards, the best solution would be to buy wooden skirting boards in the same place and from the same manufacturer as the wood itself. In this case, you will be sure that the shades and wood will match.
  3. If you decide to use other coatings: laminate, linoleum, ceramic tiles, carpet and so on, then it is advisable to choose the plinth after completing all work with the walls and floor.
  4. If you decide to choose a skirting board for the door, then you should consult with the designer, since this is a rather difficult option - you can make a mistake.
  5. A relative innovation is the use of white skirting boards. Although they will look quite sophisticated, in this case, many nuances should be taken into account: the combination of colors of furniture, floor and walls, and so on. In order for the choice to be successful, it is advisable to draw the interior of your future room in the design program and try to use different colors in order to figure out which tone will be the most optimal for you.
  6. If your room is rather small and has low overhanging ceilings, then it is better to use thin skirting boards, which should be chosen to match the walls. They will stretch the room in height.
  7. V standard rooms optimally apply standard sizes skirting boards with a height of 45-70 mm.
  8. If you are the owner of a large and high room, then small thin skirting boards are contraindicated, as they will visually disfigure and change the geometry of the room. Here it is better to take a closer look at a wide skirting board in white or contrasting colors.

The choice of wall decoration and flooring is often a difficult decision, doubts arise both in the matter of the practicality of the material and in the style accents. Often, only after long family discussions, a long-awaited design project arises. In addition to large objects and key decisions - the choice of the color palette, the degree of illumination of the room, individual zones, style and places for furniture, less important but noticeable interior elements are also needed. In the course of their planning, you will surely face the problem of how to choose a plinth. It can be designed for both the floor and the ceiling, of course, the floor is more in demand, since it is more a necessity than a decor.

The importance of making the right choice

The skirting board has been known for a long time. The word itself most likely comes from the Latin word “tile”. This element was originally more of a decoration. At the moment, the skirting board performs the function of protecting and strengthening the junction of the wall and the floor, as a decorative and design role, and also perfectly hides the cables that need to be routed around the room. Its size should be in harmony with the area of the wall, and its material and color should be combined with the interior.

You need to choose a plinth at the final stage of repair or construction. During the work, new details always appear, the color of the wallpaper can play in the light in a completely different way, the door after varnishing can become darker, and the floor will unexpectedly visually expand the space. If you purchase skirting boards in advance, there is a risk that the color of the skirting board one tone darker or lighter would be preferable in the finished interior. Since no preparatory work this element does not require, it is quite possible to go to the store for it after finishing work on the installation of walls and floors, with a photo of the room or samples of materials. Keep in mind that if you look at the skirting board before varnishing or waxing it will be slightly darker in the case of wood.

Dimensions and color

The skirting board is measured in centimeters in height. The higher the ceiling and the larger the room, the more noticeable the plinth should be, which means that you can safely take a massive model. If the room is small, it is better to run the plinth along the edge of the floor with a very thin tape, which will help visual increase the total height of the wall. However, everything is individual and the difference of 1-2 cm in the samples should not confuse you, the main thing is that the skirting board is of high quality and matches the style of the rest of the room.

You should think about how to choose the color of the skirting board in advance. For a wooden floor, it is better to choose a tone or darker. This will allow for a harmonious transition to the wall. This solution is especially important if you are developing the project yourself, it is impossible to make a mistake, you just need to take the plank from the floor to the store as a sample. A more daring option is a plinth that turns into the door slopes. This is a beautiful solution that will bring the classic to life and support modern interior... The lines should smoothly merge into door slopes and keep the same thickness.

If the interior combines bright and contrasting colors, you can also highlight the floor line with a plinth. The color should not match any wall, floor or door. This can be the shade of a central light, a sofa or shelving, paintings or photo frames. Such an interior in finished form can be safely called a designer one, because the concept is one and everything is thought out to the smallest detail. There are no restrictions on color, of course, more often people choose basic, classic colors - black, white, beige, brown, but you can also experiment.

Types of skirting boards

Reflecting on the question of which plinth to choose, remember what the requirements are for your premises. For floors that are delicate, only skirting boards with wall fasteners are suitable. In case you have semicircular wall bends, you will need a flexible skirting board. When it comes to the bathroom, then there are no other alternatives besides tiles.

There are models of skirting boards with a place for cable routing, which is also important in office premises, and in apartments. There are a lot of materials for the skirting board, they are first of all sorted by price, as always, natural wood is the most expensive.

Wooden skirting board

Such products are made from solid wood. They can be easily mounted and removed, filed and adjusted to fit required size... Properties natural wood allow such a plinth to please the eye for a long time. Wood, even after varnishing or special impregnation, still does not like moisture. This means that you should refrain from such a plinth in the bathroom, toilet and kitchen. There are models that are more affordable, which is due to the gluing inside the canvas, because it is not made from a solid mass, but from separate fragments. It is unlikely that this detail will somehow affect the operation and external data of the skirting board model. The most expensive wood specimens are those made to order. They can include special curves, small areas for corner decoration. Painstaking work on the implementation of calculations makes itself felt and is reflected in the price.

The wood used for the skirting board is the same as for the production of doors. It would be quite advisable to buy a skirting board from the same company or workshop where you ordered the floor or doors. Leaders among materials are pine, linden and oak. They are durable and durable. Decorative trees, ash, walnut and other species are used less often and rather on individual projects.

Most budget model- wood base, most often pine or spruce, and veneer covering. This thin film is a cut from more expensive wood species, such as cherries, pears. Decorative material can be anything. Such a skirting board allows you to choose the exact shade to the door or floor, but not to spend money on an array.

MDF

This material is often used both in the manufacture of furniture and in construction. It consists of pressed and glued wood. The technology provides good moisture resistance and color consistency. Such modern material it is quite universal, and its economical component manifests itself only next to the valuable rock mass. It is good to combine such a plinth with linoleum, carpet. MDF gives room for creativity, allowing you to perform various reliefs, playing with light and shadows. When making a custom-made skirting board, you can play with the floral motif of the wallpaper or the geometry of the lamps.

Pvc

Plastic has long been the cheapest and available material... Here the question of how to choose the color of the skirting board arises most acutely, because PVC has no shade restrictions. For a floor covered with laminate or linoleum, this is the most successful option. The plastic can be easily mounted using self-tapping screws and fasteners; if necessary, it can be removed. It is cheap and can be replaced with a new one if you wish. But there is also back side- PVC does not count environmentally friendly material, it is not very durable and breaks easily, and the plugs that attach one section to another do not always merge with the plinth in shade. In any case, plastic is a convenient material that can be washed, fixed and changed as needed.

Ceramics for bathroom and kitchen

Tile - the best solution for zone with high humidity... It can be easily washed with both water and special means without fear of damaging the surface. The choice is richer every year, and even the basic collections of manufacturers allow you to creatively and originally design a sanitary room. For finishing the joints here it is also better to use tiles, but specially created for this. In each collection, in addition to the basic square and rectangular slabs, there are decorative elements and borders for the formation of a ceramic skirting board. It is these elements that are best used, matching them in color with the rest of the tile.

Skirting boards for offices and government offices

You always want to put a piece of your soul into a living space in order to see a special, aesthetic world around you every day. When it comes to the premises of checkpoints, warehouses, office, most often in the first place - functionality. In this case, the requirements for the plinth are minimal - small size, reliable fastening, the possibility of safe cable laying. In all respects, an aluminum skirting board is suitable for such premises. It is resistant to moisture and overheating, not afraid of temperature changes. The fastening is also metal, it allows you to easily remove and hang back individual segments of the skirting board. The aluminum forms a rectangular channel through which wires can be routed. Outwardly, such a plinth is quite modern, it can even be used in an apartment with an abundance of metal in furniture or decoration. This model is contraindicated. classic interiors, rooms with wooden floors.

Polyurethane for special projects

There is another modern material that allows you to work wonders and is not afraid of an aggressive external environment - this is polyurethane. His specifications very stable, its solid state is the result chemical reaction... Polyurethane can also act as a flexible skirting board. It is colored, which can be produced at the request of the customer. Skirting boards made of this material can be used both on the floor and near the ceiling. Their main design role is stucco imitation. This material is perfect for antique style, it will decorate columns and sections of walls covered with tiles.

Now, knowing how to choose a skirting board for the floor, you can go to the store and feel free to place an order. If you intend to choose material from a photo via the Internet, please note that any camera can give a color error when taking photos, it is better to first touch the material live. If you choose wood, inquire about its origin, if it is a veneered skirting board, check the quality of the gluing of the upper decorative layer. In order to understand exactly how many meters of plinth you need, you should measure at home. Please note that at corners and joints you will have to shorten the skirting board yourself. Only a skirting board, completely custom-made and designed specifically for your apartment or house, can save you from calculations and additional work during installation.

If you don't have enough money for an array - limit yourself to veneer, if you are doing temporary repairs and will soon move - choose MDF. When purchasing plastic, do not forget to choose the matching plugs. It is better if there are more of them than necessary, then you can replace this part as needed. An aluminum skirting board is more of a necessity. It will firmly fix all wires, protecting them from damage. Always opt for large hardware stores, even if you need a little material. There is always a wide selection and experienced consultants who will tell you about the properties of a particular product and its benefits.

Renovation ... renovation ... We have already finished finishing the walls, ceiling and floor. It's time to start installing the skirting boards. This final touch is so important that it is impossible to take it "for nothing." The skirting board not only closes the gap between the floor and the wall, but also transforms the look of the entire room. If it is chosen incorrectly: too small or the wrong color, the whole impression of a beautiful modern renovation can "come to naught". But a correctly selected plinth can emphasize and enhance all the advantages of decoration and design of the room. How to choose the right plinth, what to look for, how much they cost different kinds skirting boards - this is our article.

The choice of skirting boards for the floor can be tied to three different parameters: the flooring, the color and texture of the walls, the color and texture of the door. As an exception, some design solutions allow or even suggest choosing a skirting board that contrasts with the color of the walls and floor. To get really beautiful, you need to have a subtle sense of taste.

If you focus on the walls in your choice, then it is better to buy skirting boards after they are finished, then the resulting shade will be best seen. It will be easier to choose the necessary tone and not be mistaken.

When planning the installation of solid wood, parquet or parquet flooring, good decision will order wooden skirting boards from the same manufacturer as the timber for the floor. This way you can be sure that the wood species and shade will match, and the differences will be minimal.

For edging floors made of other coatings: linoleum, laminate, ceramic tiles, carpet and other skirting boards are selected after all work on the floor and walls is completed.

The selection of a plinth to match the doors is the most difficult option, as it presupposes an individual design solution in advance. In this case, the skirting board should highlight, like edging, the door frame and the floor.

How to choose the color of the skirting board

According to the generally accepted rule, skirting boards are selected to match the flooring... This eliminates the possibility of making mistakes and spoiling the interior. Sometimes it is allowed to use a tone slightly darker or lighter. A plinth of the same tone as the floor merges with it and does not visually stand out in any way.

Modern design solutions allow you to choose a skirting board to match the color of the walls... Such innovation looks very organic and even chic if the walls are painted or plastered in a uniform color. If the walls are covered with variegated wallpaper, this option will not work.

Select a plinth the color of the doors worth it only if they are wooden. The skirting board should match the door trims and have the same thickness.

In very rare cases, skirting boards are chosen the color of the furniture or interior details.

A relative innovation has become use of white skirting boards... It really may look gorgeous, but at the same time it is necessary to take into account a lot of moments in which the combination of colors of walls, floor and furniture does not take the last place. To make the choice successful, you should draw the interior of the future room in a design or architectural program and play with colors.

Skirting boards in contrasting colors- bold decision. Here, too, one cannot do without preliminary sketching.

Please note that for a wooden floor, it is better to choose a plinth that is also wooden to match or darker than the floor. Other options will just look ugly.

How to choose the size of the skirting board

The size for the skirting board dictates the height of the ceilings of the room, its volume and the color scheme of the floor and walls.

It is categorically not worth using small thin skirting boards in large high rooms, they will disfigure and visually change the geometry of the room. A wide and thin skirting board is more suitable here, attached exclusively to the wall and preferably in a contrasting or white color.

If the room is too small with low overhanging ceilings, thin skirting boards to match the walls will do. As if continuing them, they will visually stretch the room in height.

In standard rooms, you can use more or less standard baseboard sizes, with a height of 45 to 70 mm.

How to choose the material of the skirting board

The choice of material for the skirting board is completely tied to the type of flooring.

Solid board, parquet, parquet board and expensive laminate are combined with solid wood skirting boards.

For a laminate of average and not very high quality, MDF skirting boards or veneered wood are suitable.

For floors covered with linoleum, laminate, jute, carpet, you can use MDF and PVC skirting board (plastic). You can purchase a plastic skirting board with a special insert, into which you can mount a piece of carpet or linoleum so that the skirting board does not differ in color from the floor.

Ceramic tiles only work well with properly selected plastic and ceramic skirting boards.

Types of skirting boards from various materials

Gone are the days when the choice of a plinth was reduced to only one single option - wood, standard shape, color and size. Today's market allows you to choose this item from different materials, shapes, colors, and even it is possible to order an individual curved skirting board that repeats the contours of any decorative element in the room.

Wooden plinth

Wooden skirting boards are made from solid wood. They are absolutely natural and environmentally friendly, they are easy to fix, cut to the required size, can be repaired and dismantled. Among the disadvantages, only sensitivity to high humidity can be distinguished, which imposes certain restrictions on the premises in which they can be used. To exclude is the bathroom, toilet and kitchen.

The most common and cheapest material for wooden skirting boards is Pine... You can buy even the highest class pine plinth for $ 2.25 - $ 3.25. And more economical options will cost 0.75 USD. for 1 m.

More expensive breeds for skirting boards are Linden and oak... Linden will cost at least 2.5 cu. But the price for a massive oak plinth can reach 5 - 8 USD and more.

Slightly less often they use cherry, ash, alder, maple, teak, beech, pear, walnut, birch and others.

Lovers of the exotic can turn their eyes to products from mahogany and ebony, acacia, merbau, dusia and others.

When buying a wooden skirting board, pay attention to the class of wood and other characteristics of the product. Sometimes you can find a plinth made of pine or oak for absolutely ridiculous money - 0.18 - 0.2 cu. for 1 m. Such a low price is due to the fact that the product is not made of solid wood, but has one, two or more glues along the canvas. Sometimes the reason may be marriage or simply a large number of knots.

The most expensive pleasure will be to order a custom-made skirting board that will follow the contours and curves of an element in the interior. Its cost will be around $ 50. for 1 m.

Most the right decision will order and purchase wooden skirting boards from the same manufacturer from whom the floor or wood flooring was ordered. This way you can be sure that the color is perfect.

Choosing a skirting board separately in a store, it is difficult to navigate by color. The fact is that they are sold without paint and varnish and, after applying varnish or wax, will change their shade. In this case, you can draw a wet sponge over the surface of the untreated baseboard, the resulting shade will be as close as possible to the opened varnish.

Veneered skirting board

The veneered skirting board also belongs to wood, but it is not made of solid wood. The base is pine or spruce, and the top is covered (veneered) with more expensive wood species: oak, pear, bamboo, walnut, acacia and others. Shades can be very diverse, so you can pick up for every taste.

The price of veneered skirting boards depends on the veneer material and ranges from 4.5 to 5.5 USD.

Previously, it was impossible to stretch a cable in a wooden skirting board, today skirting boards from solid wood or veneer with a cable channel are successfully produced.

MDF skirting board

Such skirting boards are most often used for edging floors covered with laminate, linoleum or carpet, while the walls are also trimmed with MDF panels. They are made of pressed wood fibers with the addition of binders

MDF skirting boards do not fade in the sun, they are not afraid of moisture and dirt. Prices range from 2 to 3 USD.

You can fix MDF skirting boards with glue to the wall, just like wooden ones. Or you can use liquid nails or special clips. Hooks-staples are attached to the wall, the plinth is tightly fitted onto them. End cuts and corner joints are closed with plastic plugs to match the baseboard. The clip-on attachment allows the skirting board to be removed and reused without damaging it.

Plastic skirting board

This skirting board is made of foamed PVC and is not environmentally friendly. Therefore, it is also used in combination with non-natural floor coverings: linoleum, laminate and carpet. Less commonly - with ceramic tiles.

Plastic skirting boards are very popular now, as they are practical and cheap. The product can have various shapes, colors and shades, which allows you to choose a skirting board for every taste.

Such skirting boards are not afraid of moisture and dirt, they are not susceptible to decay and corrosion, but they are less strong and durable than wooden ones.

At the end faces and corner joints special plastic plugs and elements are used. A significant drawback is the inaccurate coincidence of the shade of the baseboard itself and the caps.

Plastic skirting boards are fixed to the wall with self-tapping screws. Moreover, on front side nothing is visible, since the inner sash is fixed, which is then covered by the front sash. PVC dimensions skirting boards can be very different and, accordingly, the cable channels that are made in them are of different sizes: sometimes only for one television cable, and sometimes a whole bundle of wires can be inserted into them, and even separated by partitions.

The price for plastic skirting boards is from 0.9 - 1 USD, plus additional elements - 0.37 USD each.

Ceramic skirting board

Until recently, there was no such thing at all. If a ceramic tile floor edging was required, it was made from the same tile, only cut into the required pieces. At the same time, the cut edge was always not very smooth and aesthetic.

Today, ceramic skirting boards most often come with tiles, you must definitely ask the manager about this before buying. It is always tailored to the size of the tile and matches it in color. You can choose a skirting board separately, in a different size and shade.

The ceramic skirting board for the bathroom is an indispensable accessory. They frame the space between the tiled wall and the bathroom. This plinth has an unusual concave hemisphere shape and looks very aesthetically pleasing.

The price for ceramic skirting boards starts from 4 - 5 USD. for 1 m running.

Styrofoam skirting board

Such skirting boards are ceiling-mounted. They may have different shape, sometimes even very intricate and embossed, as required by the design of the room. Made of polyvinyl chloride. The simplest option is a strip that must be glued to the corner of the joint between the wall and the ceiling. The planks are easy to cut, but it is still worth purchasing it with a margin.

It is not possible to use foam plinths for the floor due to their fragility, yet they perform a purely decorative function.

The price range is very large: from $ 0.3. up to 4 USD for 1 m.

Polyurethane skirting board

Polyurethane skirting boards are more decorative than practical items. This material allows you to create a variety of decorative elements that resemble real stucco or other material.

Such a skirting board is light in weight, is not afraid of moisture, fungus, household chemicals and mechanical damage, durable and easy to install. It can be painted in any color, and it is fixed with glue.

The price for a polyurethane skirting board "bites": starts from 18 - 22 USD. for 1 m.

Aluminum skirting board

Such skirting boards are mainly used due to the fact that they are all manufactured with cable channels. At the same time, they are made of anodized aluminum, which provides unique strength and durability. Aluminum cable skirting board is installed in medical institutions, railway stations, factories and other public premises, as well as in household premises, for example, in the kitchen.

The material is not afraid of water and aggressive environments, including detergents, which means it is able to protect power cables laid in it. Also, the aluminum skirting board is durable and extremely beautiful. Used in high-tech interiors. Special plugs are used at the ends and corner joints. The plinth itself is attached to the wall with dowels.

The price for aluminum skirting boards and sills starts at $ 5. for 1 m.

To make the right choice of skirting boards, please be patient. It is better to go to the store several times, double-check everything: both the color and the size, than then regret that you were in a hurry with the purchase. A good option, if in doubt, would be to purchase several different samples of skirting boards and try them on in the room. In this way, mistakes can be avoided.

Wondering how to choose the right skirting board for your floor? Tired of going shopping and arguing with your other half, how can you close this hole between the floor and the wall, from where the concrete and the substrate under the laminate are peeping out? I understand you perfectly, I myself have recently encountered this. And as an altruist, I want to tell you how I made the choice, to devote, so to speak, to all the subtleties of the process. And absolutely free of charge, as she said wise Owl from the cartoon.

The agony of choice

In the photo - I am at the time of choosing a skirting board.

As my experience shows, every repair, no matter how much money you put into it and no matter how carefully you plan, does not go according to a pre-planned plan. But sooner or later, the skirting board will still have to be installed. Otherwise, your wife will saw you in half, referring to the "aesthetic incompleteness of your beloved bedroom"

Therefore, do not underestimate the importance of choosing the right baseboard. It is this piece of wood (a plastic contraption or a piece of ceramics), according to most, indicates the completion of the repair.

And they are right. Right choice skirting boards can radically change the appearance of a room, emphasize all its advantages, and also enhance the impression of the completed renovation.

Let's start with how to choose the right color for your skirting board. And the rest, less important (from the point of view of the wife) parameters will be determined in the course of the presentation.

Color

You have probably already read on the Internet or in a magazine about repairs that the color of the skirting board should be matched to the tone of the floor covering. I saw nice design solutions when the color of the skirting board was a little lighter or darker, but this did not stand out visually, but you should not take them as dogma.

Many designers (not Patricia Urquiola, of course, but still) advise to choose the color of the baseboard to match the color wall decoration... In my opinion, such an innovative solution is quite justified. But if your walls are covered with colorful, cheerful floral wallpaper, then what?

Other "super specialists" suggest choosing skirting boards in the same color as the interior doors. And how to choose the color of the skirting board for the floor if your doors are painted with "gouge out" paint? Personally, I will say that this option is more or less acceptable, only with wooden doors. And even then, the thickness of the plinth must match the thickness of the door trims. You didn't think about it beforehand, did you?

I also met with another option for choosing a plinth - this is when it is chosen directly to the color of the interior details. As, in my opinion, it is a deeply amateur and extravagant approach, but still has a right to exist. I will not envy you when you decide to change the furniture in the room. What then, rip off the skirting board and rivet it again?

All markers are different in taste and color, so there will be no talk about color for a long time. I can only note that, before choosing a floor plinth by color, I painted the interior of the future room in a special computer program... And you know what you found? White skirting board looks the best in our family bedroom.

It turned out chic option, but once again I note that this solution is not suitable for everyone. Think, dare.

And the best thing is to watch the cartoon "Tom and Jerry". They often show the entrance to Jerry's hole. And a lot of innovative ideas can be gleaned. You will know exactly how to choose the color of your skirting board.

All the rest

Color is, of course, good.

But when choosing the appropriate option, I would advise you to pay attention to a few more points:

  • the size of the royal chambers where you make repairs;
  • the material of the floor covering on which the master's foot steps.

Room area

So, the choice of plinth by color is made, now you need to decide which plinth to choose by size (width). This parameter directly depends on the area of the bedroom (in my case). I will say that the size of the plinth is directly influenced by the height of the ceilings and color scheme... The length and width of the walls is not such an important parameter.

For large and bright apartments(I am the owner of one of them), I recommend using wide skirting boards, which are best fixed to the wall. They should be either completely invisible, or be contrasting with respect to the chosen color scheme for the room.

If the room where you live cannot be called large, and a low overhanging ceiling presses on the scalp from above, it is better to use thin skirting boards. This is how it will be possible to achieve the effect of visually stretching the room in height. Although this will not help basketball players: there is a lot of visually space, and the crown clings to the chandelier. But this has nothing to do with skirting boards.

For rooms of medium size, it is better to use, guess what, skirting boards, which can be categorized as " golden mean". Not in the sense that gold is hidden inside them, but in terms of size: approximately 4.5 to 7 cm.

Cover type

As you yourself probably know (after all, there are exactly as many specialists among us as there are readers of this opus), the choice of material that was used to make the skirting board directly depends on the type of floor covering.

Solid wood board, parquet or parquet board, high quality laminate will look good with wood baseboards. If you have saved on the laminate flooring, then it is better to buy inexpensive veneered wooden skirting boards or MDF products for it.

In the case when ceramic tiles are used as the flooring, an excellent solution would be the edging of the room with plastic or ceramic baseboards.

For floors covered with carpet, laminate or linoleum, it is recommended to buy MDF and PVC skirting boards.

If you are a meticulous person and your head is an analogue of Wikipedia, then especially for you I collected in short form all the significant characteristics of skirting boards from different materials. After reading everything to the end, you can plug any consultant in the building supermarket into the belt.

Classification and characteristics of types of skirting boards

  1. Wooden skirting board.

Such skirting boards offer numerous advantages.

For me personally, the following are important:

  • naturalness of the material;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • ease of processing.

The catch is that wood is highly sensitive to moisture, and therefore it is not recommended to use a wooden plinth in rooms with high humidity. That is, they are suitable for a family bedchamber, but it is better not to install them in the bathroom and toilet.

If you decide to buy such skirting boards, pay attention to the type of wood from which they are made. Otherwise, buy skirting boards made of bog oak or Siberian larch, and you will guard with a gun so that no one scratches them (remember Jerry's mouse?). After all, the price of such a skirting board is hoo.

If the purchase of a solid wood floor, parquet board was carried out in private company, I recommend ordering skirting boards in the same place. So they will match in color, texture, and finish. And in which case it will be necessary to file a claim in the same place.

  1. Veneer skirting board... If you have already begun repairs, then you probably heard out of your ears that veneer is also kind of like wood. Why did I separate the veneer skirting boards into a separate group?

The bottom line is that here you get a pretty look, but not a very good quality.

The base of the plinth is made of pine or spruce (there are many of them), and the surface is decorated (veneered) with more expensive wood species:

  • oak;
  • nuts;
  • pear, etc.

It turns out beautifully, but only Jerry knows what is inside. But he will not say, because with the money saved during the purchase, you will buy him some cheese.

  1. MDF skirting boards.
    Skirting boards of this variety are excellent for use with flooring materials such as:
  • laminate;
  • linoleum;
  • carpet.

Such skirting boards look especially harmonious when the walls of the room are also trimmed with MDF panels.

The skirting boards themselves are made from pre-pressed wood fibers with special additives and additives. Of the advantages of this type of skirting boards, I want to highlight their strength and the fact that they absolutely do not fade when exposed to direct sunlight and perfectly tolerate moisture.

  1. Plastic skirting board... I note right away that PVC is used in the manufacture of such skirting boards, so if you are for a healthy lifestyle, be on the lookout, as they say.

These skirting boards are very common and are often used for renovations.

In principle, they have a lot of advantages:

  • low price;
  • practicality
  • a variety of different shapes, colors;
  • moisture resistance;
  • non-susceptibility to decay processes;
  • increased anti-corrosion properties.

Well, and most importantly, when making PVC skirting boards, not a single tree suffers. I haven't checked it myself, but that's what they say.

  1. Ceramic skirting board... When I was doing repairs in the bathroom and toilet a few years ago, no one knew about any ceramic skirting boards. The edging near the ceramic flooring was made from the same, cut into pieces the right sizes... Then there were craftsmen who could make the cut edge smooth and aesthetic.

Modern tilers (not all, I’ll say right away), of course, have golden hands, but they are inserted in the wrong end and in the wrong direction. Ceramic skirting boards that come with the tiles were invented specially for them. Of course, for a surcharge, and not like crackers for beer - for free.

I don't see any downsides here. The skirting board is ideally suited to the dimensions of the ceramic tile, and, of course, exactly matches its pattern. If you wish, you can purchase a skirting board of a different color for a set of ceramic tiles. And make such a funny contrast that will delight you in the bathroom.

The interesting thing about this skirting board is that it has a concave shape like a hemisphere, which, in my opinion, looks so beautiful and modern that I would definitely use it. Probably, my wife will soon force me to redo the repairs in the bathroom, so I will not show her this essay about skirting boards. Or delete this piece altogether?

In general, I'm tired of sitting at the computer. You need to go to attach the purchased skirting boards.

I did not talk about all the types of floor skirting boards that can be easily purchased in the store today. Yes, this and that was the purpose of my story. The main thing is that you can choose the right plinth for yourself and not be disappointed in such an acquisition.

Yes, I almost forgot, this story is not an instruction that must be strictly followed, but simply personal experience, confirmed by many years of practice.

Attach the skirting boards to the liquid nails with your own hands.
Then there is no way to take them off (well, what if your wife or Jerry doesn't like your choice).

If you are a risky guy, buy special fastening clips. Using hooks and staples, you can easily dismantle the skirting boards and proceed to reading this article again. And who does not like to read, watch the video in this article.
