Compare penofol with mineral slabs characteristics. Unique characteristics of penofol

  • 20.06.2020

Penofol is a modern insulation made of foil-wrapped polyethylene foam. This is a reflective heat insulator, acting on the principle of a thermos. We will talk about the technical characteristics of the material, the advantages and its application later in the article.

Penofol - rules and features of production

Penofol was invented in the USA as one of the elements of a space suit, later it was used in everyday life. Today, foil penofol is roll material, combining the thermal insulation characteristics of polyethylene foam and foil. It can have a different structure and density, and its thickness varies between 2-10 mm. The foil layer of the material is created from aluminum foil, the purity of which must be more than 99.4%. The foil is applied to the base of polyethylene by means of heat sealing, the thickness of this layer is about 20 microns.

To understand the principles of functioning of modern heaters, it is necessary to understand the procedure for transferring heat between objects. There are three types of heat transfer:

  1. 1. Convection. Heating of thermal air, which transfers heat from one object to another.
  2. 2. Conduction. Direct transfer of heat between objects.
  3. 3. Thermal radiation. Heat transfer through electromagnetic infrared waves.

Almost all existing insulation materials are capable of preventing only one of the described heat transfer options. Unlike them, penofol works in combination, polyethylene foam in its composition prevents convection, while foil provides high-quality thermal reflection (up to 97%). Such a structure of the material provides it with a heat transfer resistance of 1.355 units with a thermal insulation thickness of 10 mm. For comparison, the same figure for the standard brick wall more than 50 cm thick is only 0.405.

Another important difference between penofol and other heaters is that it does not retain, but reflects heat. Due to its small thickness, it can be used to insulate any premises, as an independent heat insulator or paired with other heat-insulating materials.

The value of marking foil insulation

Penofol insulation is of several types. Each type of heat insulator has its own unique marking:

  1. 1. A. Standard foam with foil coating on one side. It is most often used for internal insulation along with other heat insulators, for example, with polystyrene foam or expanded polystyrene.
  2. 2. B. Material, coated with aluminum foil on both sides. It can be used as the only .
  3. 3. C. Self-adhesive insulation, on one side of which there is a foil layer, and on the other - foamed polyethylene coated with moisture-resistant glue. Differs in simplicity of installation.
  4. 4.ALP. Laminated penofol, the foil side of which is protected by a polyethylene film. Most often used in agriculture.
  5. 5. M and R. Embossed insulation material with one foil layer.
  6. 6. Super NET. A heat insulator that is used to isolate engineering systems and communications - heat supply networks, pipelines, air ducts.
  7. 7. AIR. It is applied to isolation of air ducts.

For adverse climatic conditions, it has a thickness of up to 4 cm

Penofol is also on the market, which is suitable for use in the most adverse climatic conditions. It is distinguished by increased thermal insulation characteristics and has a thickness of up to 4 cm. There are heaters marked "2000", these are the most available materials, which differ from standard heaters in reduced strength and lower functionality.

Characteristics of the insulator - what makes it popular?

Foil penofol is considered a universal insulating material, the advantages of which are provided by its excellent technical characteristics. It can be used for thermal insulation of various building structures in residential and non-residential premises, inside and outside buildings. The most important parameters of a heat insulator include its following properties:

  1. 1. Thickness. One of the most important advantages of penofol is its small thickness, which is much less than that of other heaters. Standard Thickness such thermal insulation does not exceed 10 mm. The thickness of the penofol directly affects its cost. For internal insulation it is best to use a material with a thickness of 5-6 mm.
  2. 2. Thermal conductivity. It is very difficult to calculate the thermal conductivity of a combined insulation material, therefore, for penofol, its heat transfer resistance is usually called. For a material foiled on both sides with a thickness of about 5 mm, this figure is 1.23 m 2 /C / watt. To ensure the same heat transfer resistance using mineral wool installation of an insulating layer with a thickness of about 80 mm is required.
  3. 3. Moisture resistance. The material does not absorb moisture, its moisture absorption is from 0.35 to 0.7% per m 3 .
  4. 4. Soundproofing. Proper installation of penofol provides high-quality sound insulation of rooms - up to 32 decibels. To increase the level of sound insulation, before installing the insulation, it is necessary to seal the seams of building structures.
  5. 5. Vapor permeability. The vapor permeability coefficient of penofol is 0.001 mg / m / h / Pa. Thus, this insulation can be installed without first installing a vapor barrier layer.

The popularity of the heat insulator is determined not only by its technical characteristics, but also by resistance to various external influences. This material can be used at temperatures from -60 to +100 ° C, withstands the effects of almost any chemicals, and is environmentally friendly for humans. Manufacturers assure that penofol can serve for 200 years, but it is not yet possible to verify the reality of such statements, since the material has been widely used relatively recently.

Can be mounted without first installing a vapor barrier

The insulation is a hardly flammable material, does not support combustion. It is fireproof, because it can be used in different buildings and premises. When burning, it releases water and carbon dioxide, if there is not enough oxygen in the surrounding space, it can release carbon monoxide. However, it is characterized by medium rigidity, bending and compressive strength is from 44 to 74 kg/m 3 . Thanks to these technical characteristics, penofol is used almost everywhere today. It perfectly protects the premises from low temperatures, from cold bridges and reduces the load on the heat supply systems installed in the rooms.

Advantages and disadvantages - what you need to know in advance?

Analyzing the technical characteristics and properties of penofol, to its positive qualities can be attributed to a small thickness and low weight. It is thinner and lighter than almost all known analogues and at the same time provides very good protection for insulated rooms. Due to the ease of installation, the material can be installed independently at home, without seeking help from professional specialists, whose services are quite expensive. The material is easy to cut with scissors and attach to the building double-sided tape. It simplifies installation even more because installation does not require additional hydro- and vapor barriers.

Penofol consists of foil and polyethylene foam, which are completely harmless to humans, therefore it is considered to be completely safe and environmentally friendly. Even with emergency situations and fires, the material withstands very strong negative effects and can be used in buildings with high fire safety requirements. In addition, it has an affordable price and is one of the best, if not the most the best insulation in terms of price and quality ratio.

But do not think that penofol has no flaws at all, negative traits absolutely all construction and facing materials, and these features must be taken into account in order to perform the insulation as efficiently as possible, to provide the most favorable conditions for life in the interior of the dwelling. Firstly, the material is characterized by low rigidity and is not able to withstand significant physical exertion, it cannot be plastered, painted and pasted over, the only option exterior decoration- installation of drywall on the crate, on top of which any facing activities are already allowed.

Secondly, to ensure high-quality fixing of the material on the surface, it is necessary to use high-quality special glue or construction tape. Thirdly, the foil layer conducts well electricity, therefore, when installing the insulation, it is necessary to qualitatively protect it from contact with the wiring.

Prices and manufacturers - trust but verify

In order to qualitatively insulate the premises of a house or apartment, it is necessary to correctly select the most suitable type of penofol for this. Most often, for domestic use, experts recommend materials with a thickness of no more than 5 mm. They provide high-quality insulation and are inexpensive. Penofol is suitable for decorating any residential premises and wet areas in buildings, but its use for warming saunas and baths is not recommended. In such conditions, it is better to use heat-insulating materials based on polypropylene.

It is necessary to determine in advance the required amount of heat insulator so as not to overpay for unnecessary materials. For a purchase, you should calculate the exact area of \u200b\u200bthe insulated surfaces, and after that - the number of foam rolls. Rolls can contain different volumes of insulation, one roll can be enough to cover from 9 to 18 m 2 of wall area. Most foam insulation rolls are made using aluminum foil, however, such materials cannot always be used due to high electrical conductivity. Thermal insulators have lower thermal conductivity, the foil layer of which is made of lavsan metal film, but they are somewhat more expensive.

Always check the quality of penofol before buying. To do this, unroll the roll and look through the material into a bright light. In the light, the insulation should be uniform, without spots and stripes.

Penofol is a registered trademark, in our country it is produced by only one LIT plant. You can find on the market and analogues of such insulation material, sold under other names:

  • Tepofol;
  • Porilex;
  • Energoflex;
  • Izolon;
  • Magnoflex and others.

The price of insulation directly depends on its type, brand and thickness. The cheapest penofol-2000, its cost starts from 50 r per 1 m 2, it is also the lowest quality insulation of this type. Brand A insulation is a classic material, the cost of which is not less than 160 r per 1 m 2, penofol-B costs from 180 r per 1 m 2, and self-adhesive versions of the heat insulator cost at least 230 r per 1 m 2.

Examine the packaging of thermal insulation before purchasing it, as well as all accompanying documents. If the manufacturer is not indicated, or this is not the only plant in Russia that produces penofol, then you are dealing with analog material, which can be very inferior in quality to the original.

Sometimes expensive construction work suggests that you can do something yourself. For example, to insulate your house, loggia, balcony, garage or cottage. To save money, we, as experienced specialists, recommend using penofol. It is significantly cheaper than and more convenient than cheap foam plastic, but you can do the wall insulation with foam foam with your own hands much faster.

Heater Penofol foil

The combined material consists of a base layer, i.e. porous polyethylene with one or two-sided coating of a metal sheet (foil). Its uniqueness lies in the simultaneous performance of several functions at once: convection and heat reflection. Thus, with a small thickness of Penofol, it is possible to achieve amazing heat and sound insulation. The material is produced in rolls. Sheets can have a thickness of 3 to 10 mm.

V comparative table different types of building materials are presented, using which you can achieve the same result. Penofol type B 4 mm thick is equivalent to:

Dignity

  • Ecological cleanliness. The raw material for production is polyethylene and foil, which have been successfully used in the food and medical industries for many decades.
  • A thin layer of material guarantees high thermal resistance. A Penofol sheet 4 mm thick is equivalent to a wall masonry of 2.5 bricks;
  • High vapor permeability ensures free exit of excess moisture. The absorbency of the material is zero, so its use is possible in rooms with a high level of humidity. Also, foil polyethylene foam is used for outdoor work.
  • The material is characterized by excellent soundproofing properties. It will protect the structure from acoustic and structural noise.

  • The light weight of the sheets ensures quick installation. Due to its elasticity, the material fits perfectly on any surface. Lined can be done with an ordinary kitchen knife. Fastening is carried out by means of self-adhesive aluminum tapes, a furniture stapler.
  • Fire resistance. Fire-technical characteristics they say that the presented material belongs to low-combustible and hardly flammable groups (G1 and, accordingly, B1). When exposed to open fire for a long time, the sheets may smolder slightly (smoke-generating ability D2).
  • Ease of storage and transportation. Lightweight and flexible sheets are rolled into compact rolls that can even fit in the trunk of a car.

Flaws

  • The softness of foamed polyethylene has a positive effect during installation, but negatively manifests itself in the further finishing of a building or room. The surface is not intended for plastering or wallpapering.
  • Despite the high physical and technical characteristics of the material, it is used in most cases as an additional layer. To achieve an effective result in thermal insulation, it is recommended to use in combination with other types of heaters.

Penofol application

The manufacturer presents several modifications, the letter designation of which indicates its features.

a type Thickness (mm) Length (mm) Width (mm) specifications scope
A 3,4,5, 8 and 10 1200 polyethylene foam with one foil side It is mainly used for insulation of walls, attics and mansards in conjunction with other types of insulation. This material is widely used for insulation of engineering systems.
V 3,4,5, 8 and 10 With a thickness of up to 5 mm - 3000 mm; 8 and 10 mm - 1500 mm 1200 Polyethylene foam base with double-sided foil Effective as an independent insulation for interfloor ceilings and internal walls, partitions
WITH 3,4,5, 8 and 10 600 One side of the polyethylene foam is covered with aluminum foil, the other with a self-adhesive layer. Installation is carried out without the use of additional fasteners Used for insulation of complex structures, optimal for hard-to-reach places
ALP 3 3000 mm 600 The base is covered with foil on one side. Foil side laminated with PE film This product provides reliable protection against corrosion processes. Ideal for use in underfloor heating systems

Today, products of other modifications are produced, for example, with a reinforced base (fiberglass) or additional perforation, which are intended for external insulation of building structures.

How to insulate with Penofol

  • Mounting the canvas is quite simple, fastening to the surface is done using stapler staples or adhesives. The sheets have a butt joint, however, overlapping up to 10 cm is allowed. The foil side should face the inside of the room, house, pipe, etc.

  • Particular attention should be paid to insulating the wiring, as aluminum is a good conductor of electricity. Plastic channels or corrugated pipes can be used here.
  • The basic rule that must be observed without fail is the presence of a ventilation gap of 1.5-2 cm on both sides of the material. This is due to the fact that the polyethylene base is absolutely waterproof, therefore, the moisture that inevitably arises during the operation of the building will accumulate and moisten other structural elements.
  • Mounting joints or accidental cuts in the canvases are glued with self-adhesive aluminum tape (LAS or LAMS). Mounting tape provides complete vapor and waterproofing of the system.

Insulation of walls with Penofol from the inside of the room

Internal wall insulation will prevent the formation of moisture, and hence the development of mold and fungus. Work is carried out in the following order.

  • Rails 1.5-2 cm thick are mounted on the surface in a vertical position, this characteristic will provide the required ventilation gap. The step between the bars should be equal to 600 mm. Since the width of the web is 1200 mm, this indicator is optimal for the installation of insulation.
  • Laying is carried out with the foil side inside the room. The edges should be located in the middle of the rail. The next sheet is located end-to-end to the previous one. The best fastener is a construction or furniture stapler; small nails can be used.
  • Cutting the canvases along the length is carried out using a ruler and a sharp knife or blade.
  • All connecting seams are glued with special adhesive tape, which will ensure complete sealing between the canvases.
  • The next step is to re-mount the rails. Their location is selected depending on the characteristics of subsequent finishing materials. A wooden frame can serve as the basis for fastening panels made of plastic or wood, as well as plasterboard sheets, which are puttied and then painted or wallpapered.

Installation of Penofol outside the building

Experts say that the most effective way to insulate is to install thermal insulation material outside. The perforated modification of Penofol contributes to the free removal of steam and moisture emanating from the building. In addition, the material protects the walls from wind and precipitation, provides a high level of sound insulation. An important advantage of outdoor installation of insulation can be attributed to saving usable area of the room.

  • Warming is recommended in dry, warm weather. The surface is cleaned of previous coatings, dust and dirt. Then it is subjected to antiseptic treatment. Particular attention should be paid to the corners and lower parts of the walls, they are more prone to freezing.
  • As with internal insulation, slats are mounted on the surface. Fasteners are selected depending on the material of the walls.
  • The canvases are spread butt-to-butt. Fastening is carried out with a stapler. The seams between the sheets, as well as the junctions of their upper and lower parts to the walls, are glued with mounting aluminum tape.

  • Next, the outer frame is equipped, which is lined with profiled sheets, vinyl siding and other materials. If a brick acts as a cladding, then there is no need for a re-frame. In this case, the masonry is erected at a distance of 30-40 mm from the bearing walls, providing the necessary bond, taking into account the features and nature of the structure being built.

Cement floor insulation with Penofol

  • Grade A material can be used as a substrate for parquet, laminate, linoleum. It will show high performance in thermal and waterproofing, as well as sound absorption.
  • To insulate concrete floors, first a screed is made with a mortar with the addition of expanded clay. However, dirty and labor-intensive work can be avoided if this layer is replaced with sheets of foam plastic 5-10 cm thick, on top of which sheets are laid with the foil side up.
  • The edges should go on all the walls by 10 cm. The canvases themselves are laid without overlap. The connecting seams are glued with aluminum tape.

  • For the ventilation gap between the insulation and the finishing material, slats or logs are stuffed. wooden elements treated with antiseptics to prevent premature decay.
  • 1-2 cm are indented from the wall and slats are mounted along the entire length of the room in increments of 40 cm. Horizontalness is checked building level or laser, if necessary, an adjustment is made by placing chips.
  • The edges of the insulation that protrude onto the walls are carefully cut off.
  • Sheets of plywood (12 mm), fiberboard or chipboard are laid on top of the frame. Self-tapping screws are screwed in every 15-20 cm. The rough floor is covered with any facing material.

Installation of Penofol in the "Warm floor" system

  • The presented material provides not only hydro- and sound insulation, but also guarantees excellent heat transfer due to the reflective foil layer.
  • Cloths of grade A or C are spread with foil on top on the base butt-to-butt with a mandatory step on the walls (10 cm each). The joints of the material and accidental cuts are glued with mounting tape (LAMS).
  • Next, the heating elements are laid. Bars are laid between them, which will serve as the basis for laying parquet, laminate or other piece products.

  • In the case when the heating system is filled with a sand-cement screed (under ceramic tiles), a modification of Penofol - ALP is used. This type of material does not respond to adverse environments.
  • Laying is carried out with a spade on the walls and a butt joint, the seams are glued without fail.
  • After the installation of the heating elements, the system performance is checked. Then the reinforcing mesh is lined and the concrete solution is poured. When the screed dries, the protruding edges of Penofol are cut off.

The physical and technical characteristics of this material make it possible to use it for insulation and simultaneous protection from cold, dampness and noise. At the same time, the small thickness of Penofol allows rational use of the internal and external space of buildings and other structures without loss of functional properties.

As of today, it is known a large number of insulating building materials. Every day, the market for thermal insulation materials is expanding, and manufacturers are striving to improve their quality indicators.

Among the various types of insulation, it is worth highlighting the reflective thermal insulation - foil penofol, produced in rolls. Let's find out what this material consists of and what characteristics it has.

Material structure

Foil penofol - refers to the type of reflective insulation. Such a material was created, solely for the purpose of protecting various structures from factors such as: draft, cold, wind, moisture and fumes. It went through several stages of improvement, as a result of which it combined such qualities as: sound, heat, steam and waterproofing.

Consists of several main layers:

  1. The first layer is polyethylene , foamy consistency with closed pores. The pores are 90% filled with air, so the material prevents heat transfer. The first layer - may vary in material thickness, density and structure.
  2. The second layer is aluminum foil, which reflects heat. Foil - penofol can be covered both on one side and on both sides, which is reflected - in the technical characteristics of the product, as well as its features. It is worth noting that the connection of the foil with polyethylene is carried out by thermal welding.

The thickness is available: from 2 to 40 mm. The thickness of the foil ranges from 12 to 30 microns. The principle of operation of foil penofol is based on the functioning of a thermos. Thanks to the air cushion, which is covered with a reflective element in the form of aluminum foil, it is possible to keep warm for a long time. The use of such a heat-insulating material in the construction of a house makes it possible not only to significantly save on heating, but also to slow down the process of warming up the house in the summer.

Pros and cons

Penofol, like any other building material, has its advantages and disadvantages. Thanks to these important factors, it is possible to choose the best option for warming the house.

The benefits include:

Despite such a complex of advantages of penofol, it also has some disadvantages:

  • The material has excessive softness, so it cannot be plastered like foam;
  • To fix on the surface - you will need to additionally use glue. Production produces self-adhesive penofol, which is devoid of such a disadvantage;
  • Use penofol as an independent insulating layer for external walls buildings are not recommended. It can be used as an additional insulating layer.

Main technical characteristics

Having learned about the advantages and disadvantages, it is worth finding out what basic technical parameters this material has:

Kinds

Depending on the destination of the material, manufacturers produce the following types:

  • Type A foil coated on one side only. It is also called one-sided;
  • Type B, presented in the form of double-sided foil coating. Applicable for stand-alone insulation type;
  • Type C, self-adhesive penofol, which at its base consists of foil, polyethylene and a layer of moisture-resistant glue. This option is convenient for installation and does not require additional installation tools.

In addition to the three main types, manufacturers also produce the following options:

  • ALP type, which is additionally covered with a polyethylene film. This film is designed to protect the material from aggressive environments;
  • type M and R, presented in the form of a one-sided insulation with a relief base;
  • AIR type, special materials, with the help of which the arrangement of air outlets is carried out.

Application

1) As a heat insulator:

2) As an additional element of the structure:

Installation rules

Depending on the scope of penofol, the methods of its installation differ. For installation work on laying material on the balcony, you should be guided by the following technology:

We insulate the walls of the house with penofol from the inside

To insulate walls from the inside, it is recommended to use penofol up to 5 mm thick. Should be used - material with a one-sided foil element. If 5 mm of insulation is not enough, then it is better to additionally insulate the walls with polystyrene.

The principle of installation is as follows:

  • First you need to measure required size insulation and cut it off;
  • Using a stapler, you need to attach the material to the wall. For a concrete wall, you can use glue or staples;
  • The material should cover the entire surface of the wall;
  • The joints of the sheets should be glued with adhesive tape;
  • On top of the penofol, a frame made of slats or plywood is mounted;
  • Then, drywall or chipboard is mounted.

After the entire room is sheathed with drywall, you can additionally insulate the house from the outside using foam.

With the help of penofol, it is possible to insulate the walls of the house from the outside, but after installation, it will be necessary to protect it by lining the walls with plastic or corrugated board.

Using this material as a heater for the house, you can significantly reduce your heating costs, as the material does an excellent job with its main purpose - to save heat.

What is penofol, what is its structure, varieties, technical characteristics, pros and cons of a heat insulator, selection rules and installation features of foil material.

Description and features of the production of penofol

For the first time, reflective thermal insulation began to be used in the United States as one of the elements for the manufacture of space suits. Later, this technology was adopted by builders around the world.

Foil penofol is a rolled material that combines the excellent thermal insulation qualities of foil and polyethylene foam. Polyethylene foam can have a different structure and density. His pores are closed. The thickness ranges from 2 to 10 millimeters.

The thickness of the foil layer is about 20 µm. Aluminum foil with a purity of at least 99.4% is applied to the polyethylene base by heat welding.

To understand the principle of operation of this insulation, you should remember how heat is transferred from object to object. This happens in three ways: convection (moving warm air), conduction (thermal conduction of the objects themselves), thermal radiation (transfer of heat through electromagnetic infrared waves).

Most modern heaters are able to prevent only one type of heat transfer. Penofol acts in combination: polyethylene foam prevents convection, and foil increases the thermal reflection rate up to 97%. Thus, the total coefficient of resistance to heat transfer for a ten-millimeter thick penofol reaches 1.355. For example, the same indicator for a brick wall 54 centimeters thick is 0.405.

Unlike other types of insulation, penofol does not retain heat, but reflects it. The material is used both independently and in combination with other heat insulators.

The main types of penofol

This heat insulator comes in several varieties. They are indicated by a special marking in the name of penofol. Consider the main types:
  • A. The material has an aluminum foil coating on one side only. Usually this penofol is used in combination with other heaters (for example, styrodur or polystyrene).
  • V. The foil covers the polyethylene foam layer on both sides. This type of heat insulator can be used as an independent heater.
  • WITH. This is self-adhesive foam. On the one hand, such material is covered with foil, on the other hand, it has foamed polyethylene with a moisture-resistant adhesive composition. Installation of such a heat insulator is simple and does not require additional funds.
  • ALP. This is a heater, on the foil part of which a polyethylene film is applied. It is also called laminated penofol. It is used in agriculture and in slightly aggressive environments.
  • R&M. Varieties of embossed material with one-sided foil coating.
  • Super NET. Penofol of a special structure, which is suitable for insulating various networks, for example, pipelines, air outlets, and thermal networks.
  • AIR. This is a heater that is used to create structures for air venting.
There is also a special insulation for use in particularly harsh climatic conditions. The total thickness of the penofol of this variety reaches 40 millimeters.

On sale you can sometimes find material marked "2000". It is a cheap analogue of this heat insulator with reduced strength characteristics.

Technical characteristics of penofol

This heat insulator is considered universal, since it can be insulated various designs, residential and non-residential facilities, use from the inside and outside with the same efficiency.

Consider the main technical characteristics of penofol, which explain its high demand:

  1. Thickness. According to this indicator, this insulation compares favorably with other heat insulators. The standard thickness of penofol ranges from 2 to 10 millimeters. The thicker the material, the more expensive it is. The most popular and optimal for domestic use is a 5 mm thick insulation.
  2. Thermal conductivity of penofol. Since we are talking about a combined heat insulator, its thermal conductivity is difficult to derive and compare with other types of heaters. The material provides comprehensive insulation by reducing convection and reflecting heat rays. Therefore, it is customary to talk about the heat transfer resistance of penofol. If we calculate this indicator for a material of average thickness of 4-5 millimeters with double-sided foiling, then it will be equal to 1.2-1.23 m 2 / C / watt. To achieve the same results, you will need a layer of mineral wool of at least 85 millimeters.
  3. Moisture resistance. Penofol practically does not absorb water. It does not matter the humidity of the ambient air in the street or in the room. The moisture absorption index for this insulator is 0.35-0.7% per cubic meter.
  4. Vapor permeability. When using penofol, it is not necessary to lay an additional layer of vapor barrier. The vapor permeability coefficient of the material is less than 0.001 mg/m/h/Pa.
  5. Soundproofing. With proper installation, penofol provides a decent level of sound absorption - 32 decibels and above. For good sound insulation, the material should be installed on top of the frame of the building structure with no seams. In this way, the penetration of acoustic and structural noises can be avoided.
  6. combustibility. Penofol belongs to the class of materials that are difficult to ignite and do not support the combustion process. According to the licenses and certificates assigned to this heat insulator, it is not a fire hazard. When ignited, it releases carbon dioxide and water. However, with an insufficient amount of oxygen in the surrounding air, penofol begins to produce carbon monoxide.
  7. Mechanical resistance. The material is non-rigid and has compressive and bending strength in the range of 44-74 kg per cubic meter.
  8. Operating temperature range. Penofol can be operated at temperatures from -60 to +100 degrees Celsius.
  9. Chemical resistance. The material is resistant to almost all chemicals.
  10. Environmental friendliness. Penofol is considered an environmentally friendly material, since its basis is polyethylene foam, which does not emit any toxic substances and volatile compounds into the environment. In addition, this insulation allows you to protect yourself to a large extent from the influence of electromagnetic waves.
  11. Lifetime. Manufacturers guarantee that penofol is able to serve without losing its qualities for about two hundred years. So far, there is no way to verify this statement in practice, since the material is relatively young.

Advantages of penofol

The main advantages of penofol include the following qualities:
  1. small thickness. Compared to many heat insulators, foam foam is very thin. At the same time, it is not inferior in terms of thermal insulation. They can insulate the walls from the inside, and he will not "steal" the free space.
  2. Light weight. The material is very light. Therefore, it is convenient to transport and install it alone.
  3. Ease of installation. Penofol does not crumble, does not break, does not require the use of personal protective equipment and special tools. It is easily cut with an ordinary knife or scissors, and is attached to tape, staples or small nails.
  4. Environmental Safety. Foil and polyethylene foam, which are components of the foam insulation, are absolutely harmless. They are also used in the field of food packaging. The toxicity of these substances is reduced to zero.
  5. High resistance to fire. The material is difficult to ignite, so it can even be used to isolate places with high fire safety requirements.
  6. No need for vapor barrier. Penofol has a low vapor permeability, so it does not require any additional insulating layers.
  7. low price. This is a fairly economical material. In addition, there are no costs for its installation work.

Disadvantages of penofol

Like other thermal insulation materials, foil penofol has a number of disadvantages. Let's consider them:
  • Insufficient rigidity. The softness of the material does not allow for plastering, painting or wallpapering over foam foam. A slight pressure can temporarily deform the material.
  • Poor adhesion. Penofol is weakly glued to the walls, since its adhesive properties are quite low. It is necessary to purchase special glue or use fasteners. However, in the case of the latter, care must be taken not to reduce the insulating qualities of the material. Self-adhesive foil insulation can also be a way out of the situation.
  • Aluminum conducts electricity well. When installing penofol, it is necessary to reliably protect the electrical wiring and prevent breakdowns.

Penofol selection criteria

When choosing foil polyethylene foam for thermal insulation purposes, you must follow these recommendations:
  1. From the point of view of the ratio of price and quality, the material with a thickness of 4-5 millimeters is optimal.
  2. Penofol can be used in any residential premises. But for saunas, baths, it is recommended to use reflective heat insulators based on polypropylene, which is more resistant to high temperatures than penofol.
  3. To calculate the required amount of heat insulator, keep in mind that the size of the penofol is usually determined by square meters. One roll contains 9 to 18 squares.
  4. The reflectivity of the insulation depends on the material from which the foil is made. The aluminum layer is optimal. However, sometimes there may be restrictions on the use of this metal due to the fact that it is a good electrical conductor. Then you should give preference to a material with a lavsan metallized film.
  5. Pay attention to whether the penofol is sewn or not. If so, how. It can be chemical and physical method. It is preferable to choose a non-crosslinked material or one that is chemically crosslinked.
When buying penofol, you can easily check its quality. To do this, you need to unfold the roll and look through it at a bright light source. So you can see the uniformity of the material, the presence of spots, stripes.

Price and manufacturers of penofol

Penofol is a registered trademark. In Russia, the plant that has the official rights to produce this material is LIT. On the market you can also find analogues of penofol, which are produced under other names: Energoflex, Magnoflex, Tepofol, Izolon, Porileks, Maksizol and others.

It is worth noting that penofol-2000 is distinguished by a lower price. Its cost starts from 50 rubles per square meter. However, this material is based on cross-linked polyethylene foam, which has poorer technical characteristics.

The price of penofol varies depending on its brand, thickness and density. Grade A is the cheapest among classic penofols (from 155 rubles per square). The cost of brand B material starts from 180 rubles per square meter. The price of self-adhesive penofol starts at 230 rubles per square.

Carefully study the packaging and documents provided by the seller of the goods. Remember, if the manufacturer of penofol is not indicated, then you are not dealing with this material at all, but with its analogue.

Brief instructions for installing penofol

As a rule, this heat insulator is used to insulate the walls of the room from the inside. For these purposes, it is ideal.

Consider the instructions for installing penofol with your own hands:

  • We are preparing a frame of wooden beams on the wall. It is necessary to provide an air gap of about 20 millimeters.
  • We fasten the bars with dowels in increments of 1 meter from each other.
  • Checking the quality electrical wiring. We carry out its isolation if necessary.
  • We cut the strips of penofol with a knife and apply end-to-end (without overlaps).
  • We fasten the material to the frame with the reflective side facing us, using a furniture stapler or special glue.
  • We glue the seams with metal tape.
  • We mount the wooden frame again with an indent of about two centimeters.
  • On top of the second frame, you can lay drywall sheets, panels that are puttied, painted and wallpapered.
In exactly the same way, the floor is insulated with penofol. Only wooden logs will act as a frame.

Watch the video review of penofol:

Penofol is a relatively new heat insulator. It differs from most heaters in that it is able not only to act as an obstacle to the cold, but also to reflect heat into the room. Its cost is relatively low, and installation does not require special skills.

Penofol, which has no competitors, has excellent characteristics. Its flexibility allows it to lay down perfectly on any surface. Among all the variety modern materials penofol gained the highest popularity. Penofol, like any construction material, has its pros and cons. In this article, we will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of penofol and its scope.

When repairing or building a house, almost all surfaces are finished: ceilings, floors, internal and external walls. This, as a rule, is the insulation of surfaces, as well as their vapor, sound and waterproofing. But, if the “sound” and “steam” do not particularly bother developers, then everyone thinks about heat.

Construction markets offer a huge range of thermal insulation materials, the use of which is determined by their technical characteristics. new material- penofol appeared relatively recently. Let's try to understand whether it makes sense to give preference to this particular material.

Penofol - what is it?

Penofol is a multilayer material based on polyethylene foam. The base is covered with a thin layer of aluminum foil. Penofol is a type of reflective insulation. It is unlikely that an ordinary buyer will become interested in the modulus of elasticity or other technical details of this material. Therefore, we will consider the types, scope, installation basics, expediency of use, advantages and disadvantages of penofol.

What types of penofol do manufacturers offer?

Penofol is offered by manufacturers of the following types:

  • Type "A" - the base is covered with foil on one side.
  • Type "B" - double-sided coating with a protective layer.
  • Type "C" - foil on one side, self-adhesive layer on the other.

In the first option, to preserve heat, the foil side of the penofol should be facing the room. The use of penofol type "B" allows you to prevent excessive heating of the room in summer, and to keep warm in winter. The third option is used for thermal insulation of surfaces in hard-to-reach places.

Manufacturers also offer other types of penofol: with reinforcement, perforation and a number of other features. In any case, the principle of action of penofol creates the effect of a thermos. In a room insulated with this material, you will not have to “drive” the air conditioner in the summer, and the heating boiler in the winter.

Where is penofol used?

  • The material is perfect for insulating walls (external and internal), floors and roofs of buildings.
  • Indispensable for thermal insulation of ventilation systems and air ducts.
  • It is applied to isolation of cars and mechanisms.
  • It is an ideal insulation for balconies and loggias.
  • Installed behind radiators.
  • It serves as a heat insulator for pipes and pipelines, but on top of mineral wool insulation.
  • This material is very convenient for arranging thermal insulation of temporary huts, modules for trade, stalls.

It should be noted that for the thermal insulation of the external walls of buildings, penofol is used as an additional insulation, which, first of all, protects the walls from moisture and reflects thermal energy.

What are the rules for installing penofol?
  • Before starting the installation of insulation, any surface is cleaned, its irregularities and cracks are eliminated.

  • This material is absolutely waterproof. Therefore, between the penofol and additional structural elements there must be a free air space of at least 20 mm. To do this, a frame of wooden slats is installed on the insulated surface, to which penofol is subsequently attached.
  • Aluminum is a good conductor of electricity. So contact of penofol with uninsulated or low-quality electrical wires is unacceptable. Before the beginning installation works the quality of the wiring is carefully checked.

  • Using a knife, penofol is cut into strips of the desired length. Further, with the help of a furniture stapler, the insulation is attached to a wooden frame. The stripes are overlapped. Penofol overlap fastening is unacceptable. In the event of steam formation, the accumulated condensate will drain along the overlap lines. The joints of the insulation are glued with aluminum tape.
  • Because an air space of 2 cm should be on both sides of the foam, then again set wooden frame. The slats of the second frame are aligned with special care, because the finishing material will be attached to this structure.

Unfortunately, it is not entirely advisable to use penetrating devices for fixing penofol. Careless work can degrade the thermal insulation qualities of this insulation. For this reason, penofol began to be produced with a self-adhesive surface.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of penofol?

The advantages of penofol are determined by the following qualities:

  • the small thickness of the material provides, however, decent thermal insulation of the premises;
  • ease of installation, professional tools are not required when installing penofol, the material does not crumble or break;
  • environmental friendliness, penofol components are used even for food storage;
  • waterproofness;
  • fire safety;
  • is an excellent noise and water insulator;
  • ease of transportation, thin material rolls up into compact rolls;
  • affordable price.

TO shortcomings penofol can only be attributed to its softness. It is enough to press a little on the material, and it will bend, so it is impossible to finish the penofol with wallpaper or plaster.

Having studied the main characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of penofol, we can conclude that the insulation of buildings and structures with the most modern heat insulator is an excellent option. Penofol protects not only from the cold, but also from extraneous noise and moisture. At the same time, the loss of free space in the room and the consumption of heat-insulating materials is minimized. This fact will please any owner.

Today, a large number of insulating building materials are known. Every day, the market for thermal insulation materials is expanding, and manufacturers are striving to improve their quality indicators.

Among different types heaters, it is worth highlighting the reflective thermal insulation - foil penofol, produced in rolls. Let's find out what this material consists of and what characteristics it has.

Material structure

Foil penofol - refers to the type of reflective insulation. Such a material was created, solely for the purpose of protecting various structures from factors such as: draft, cold, wind, moisture and fumes. It went through several stages of improvement, as a result of which, combined such qualities as: sound, heat, steam and waterproofing.

Consists of several main layers:

  1. The first layer is polyethylene , foamy consistency with closed pores. The pores are 90% filled with air, so the material prevents heat transfer. The first layer - may vary in material thickness, density and structure.
  2. The second layer is aluminum foil which reflects heat. Foil - penofol can be covered on one or both sides, which is reflected - on the technical characteristics of the product, as well as its features.

  • The material has excessive softness, so it cannot be plastered like foam;
  • To fix on the surface - you will need to additionally use glue. Production produces self-adhesive penofol, which is devoid of such a disadvantage;
  • It is not recommended to use penofol as an independent insulating layer for the external walls of buildings. It can be used as an additional insulating layer.

Main technical characteristics

Having learned about the advantages and disadvantages, it is worth finding out what basic technical parameters this material has:

Kinds

Depending on the destination of the material, manufacturers produce the following types:

  • type A foil coated on one side only. It is also called one-sided;
  • type B, presented in the form of double-sided foil coating. Applicable for stand-alone insulation type;
  • type C, self-adhesive penofol, which at its base consists of foil, polyethylene and a layer of moisture-resistant glue. This option is convenient for installation and does not require additional installation tools.

In addition to the three main types, manufacturers also produce the following options.

Penofol is a reflective insulating multilayer material consisting of a main body and polished aluminum foil. Depending on the required properties, polyethylene foam materials are used as the basis for penofol, which have different physical characteristics depending on the thickness and structure. There are two main types - foil and non-foil.

Non-foil penofol has found fewer uses, since when using only a gas-foam base, its main property, thermal insulation, is lost. Foams in this form are used for civilian purposes - all kinds of camping mats, pet bedding, etc.

If you do not need reflective properties for insulation, you can use a non-foil base as a layer for insulating floors, walls, ceilings and pipes, since its application temperature varies from -40 to +100 ° C, which meets the basic operating conditions. This type is considered an outdated insulating material, it was replaced by a more advanced technology - applying a thin metal coating.

A reflective material is applied to the foil using thermal welding technology. The polished web with a reflectance of 96-98% has a thickness of up to 0.1 mm, while the thickness of the main foam material ranges from 1 to 25 mm, in the case of individual orders it can be up to 50 mm (this option is usually used in especially cold climates).

Classification of foil penofol

Depending on the application and the required operational properties The modern building materials market offers the following types of penofol:

  • Marking "A"– has a reflective aluminum coating on one side only. Most often, this type is used in conjunction with other heaters, such as polystyrene foam or polystyrene foam. The most common, used as insulation in residential premises, has vapor-reflecting properties.
  • Marking "B"- the foil coating is applied on both sides, which allows its use as an independent insulation. With a sufficient thickness of the base layer, it is possible to insulate the floor or walls only with it. The upper part of the reflector will keep the heat inside the room, reflecting it back into the room, and the lower part will protect you from the cold penetrating through the walls from environment.
  • "C" marking- this modification has a reflective coating on one side only, moisture- and heat-resistant glue is applied on the other side. This type allows you to use it in hard-to-reach places, as well as insulate walls and ceilings without any installation difficulties.
  • Modifications "R" and "M" have one-sided aluminum coating with a thickness of 0.14 mm, deposited on a relief structure, while the other side is flat. Such indicators, different from the standard ones, provide increased sound, heat, and moisture insulation. These modifications are used for outdoor structures, as the relief structure provides maximum sound insulation. They are recommended for use in multilayer structures.
  • "SuperNet" marking means that this type of penofol has increased resistance to aggressive environmental conditions due to the increased thickness and density of the gas-foam base. It is used to isolate communication networks, water pipes and heating mains - in places that require maximum insulation performance.
  • Laminated (modification "ALP")- has a one-sided foil coating, on which a polymer film is applied. It is used as a reflective element in the “ ” system, laid directly under the heating elements with the foil side up. Thus, the heat released by pipes or heating elements is reflected upwards, without being wasted on heating the lower part of the floor. Lamination increases the resistance of the aluminum coating to the heat that is released from the heating elements.
  • Marked "AIR" perforated penofol is indicated - a material that has in its structure through holes. It is used for external insulation of structures, the perforated structure allows steam emissions to pass from the structure to the outside. This type is recommended to insulate cold walls frame houses in multi-storey buildings.

Internal and external insulation of premises

For domestic needs, it is sufficient to use the first three modifications of penofol - A, B and C. The scope of this material as a heater is very extensive: floors, walls, ceilings, insulation of balconies, terraces and loggias, insulation of wooden and frame houses. Below are the insulation technologies.

Floor insulation

Before laying the insulating layer, you first need to level the initial surface of the thin concrete screed. To do this, a liquid solution of cement is kneaded and poured, then it is allowed to dry completely. It is not recommended to lay penofol immediately - a layer of foam plastic with a thickness of 7-15 cm is usually used.

Further actions are related to the selected type of penofol:

  • If modification "A" is used, then a moisture-resistant adhesive-fixer is evenly applied to the foam, on which the insulating material is tightly laid.
  • In the case of material marked "C", the adhesive is not needed, as it is already applied on the opposite side of the reflector. In the manufacture of this modification, the waterproof adhesive is immediately covered with a layer of polyethylene to prevent premature drying. To start laying foam foam, the polyethylene layer is carefully removed, then the material is carefully rolled out over the surface of the foam.

The material is laid with a five-centimeter overlap on the walls, all joints must be glued with aluminum insulating tape. This will achieve maximum steam and moisture insulation effect and protect the floor from impact noise. After the floor is laid, the protruding parts of the insulating material are carefully cut with a mounting blade.

When designing a "warm floor" system, there are two main types of subsequent installation - the use of a log and a concrete screed. Logs are recommended to use if you want to make a wooden floor on top of the insulated layer. To do this, it is necessary to lay wooden logs along the entire floor over the heating elements (it is first recommended to treat them with antiseptic preparations or soak them with special hydrophobic oils).

The horizontal installation of the bars should be controlled using a level. Then, boards or other variants of wooden floors are stuffed over the laid bars. Thus, the heat coming from the heating elements will be reflected upwards by the foil covering, warming up the wooden floor.

The second option is to install the "warm floor" system under tiles or natural stone. To do this, the heating elements are covered with a thin reinforced mesh and poured with a concrete screed, or they are placed in a layer of tile adhesive retainer. It should be noted that in this case it is necessary to use penofol marked "ALP". A layer of polymer film-laminate will protect the thin aluminum foil, since the action cement mortar or glue-fixative has a destructive effect on it.

Wall insulation

When insulating the internal walls of the room, it is recommended to use penofol marked "B". Its installation is more complex and time-consuming than modifications "A" and "C", but it is able to provide more serious insulation protection. For better sound and heat insulation, ventilation gaps are created between the wall and the penofol.

If the material with one-sided foil can be glued directly to the wall or to a heavier insulation (thick layer of foam), then double-sided installation metal coated takes place according to the following technology:

  • With the help of dowels, wooden blocks 1-2 cm thick are attached to the wall;
  • A layer of penofol marked “B” is screwed onto them with screws or nailed with mounting brackets;
  • Drywall is applied to the surface of the insulating material, which is attached to the rail with self-tapping screws. If you decide to leave cavities for ventilation on the other side of the penofol, then first the slats with a thickness similar to the previous ones are screwed onto it again, and only then the drywall is fixed. You will lose 2-3 centimeters of space in the room, but provide very good insulation due to two air cushions.

The joints of the penofol must be carefully glued with aluminum insulating tape to avoid drafts.

Ceiling insulation

Indoors, it follows from gluing a thin layer of penofol to the original coating. It will serve as the primary insulating barrier, onto which wooden slats are then screwed, which act as a frame for the main layer of insulation.

After mounting the rails, a second, already thick layer is attached to them, which is attached to the frame with construction stapler or self-tapping screws. If another layer of insulation is needed, then the previous layer of insulation is also fastened with wooden laths, on which the third layer is mounted in the above way.

To create conditions for decorating the room, drywall is glued or screwed to the last level.
The formation of one or more air cushions provides the highest insulation performance, while the condensate accumulated in them will be removed through ventilation. Do not forget to process the foam foam joints with construction tape or silicone glue.

Warming of balconies, loggias, terraces

If you carefully study, then the isolation of these premises will not cause difficulties for you. However, when insulating balconies, one should not forget about the need for maximum lightening of the structure in order to avoid an accident.

Warming of a wooden house

The technology for installing penofol is no different from the technology in brick, cinder block or other houses. But it is worth noting that due to the high waterproofing feature of penofol, its installation on wooden walls both outside and inside, should be carried out exclusively in summer, at least after several hot days.

In no case should you insulate the house if the tree is swollen after the rains and saturated with moisture. After sheathing the house, it will forever remain inside, and the tree will simply rot, destroying your house.

When insulating walls and ceilings, we must not forget that the aluminum coating has a very high rate conductivity. In no case should it be placed next to poorly insulated wiring, this can lead to instantaneous ignition of a large area of the room! Before assembling the structure, it is necessary to carefully check the wires and insulate them well!

Flaws

Despite the amazing physical performance and relative ease of use, this material has several disadvantages:

  • It is somewhat more expensive than traditional insulating materials, but much more efficient - so this can be called a justified disadvantage.
  • Penofol cannot be used as an independent element, it must be combined with heavier and more massive heaters like polystyrene or expanded polystyrene.
  • Care must be taken during installation, because the gas-foam base is very fragile, and unnecessary damage to the material is useless.
