Painting a wooden floor. How to paint a wooden floor? How to paint an old wooden floor in a house

  • 17.06.2019

Floor painting should be taken responsibly, with special attention to choosing materials and tools for work. The floor is the most exploited surface in any room, so its coating must be especially durable and resistant to any external influences.

Wood floors, so loved by many for their naturalness, pleasant texture, luxurious appearance, are particularly vulnerable to pests and rot, and are also often deformed due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature in different time of the year. All these problems are a payment for the naturalness and environmental friendliness of the material.

However, you should not be afraid of problems and refuse wooden floors in any case. Proper staining and further care wooden floors are able to solve all difficulties, making the surface strong, durable and solid.

Technics

The technique of painting the floor itself is as follows:

  1. Floor cleaning from dirt, complete drying.
  2. Filling gaps between boards.
  3. Sanding, polishing the floor. After that, the surface is well wiped with a dry cloth.
  4. Applying antiseptics or other protective impregnation, or priming the surface. Drying wood.
  5. Application of the final paint finish.

Like any other surface, the floor must be prepared before painting. This means carrying out reconnaissance work to identify protruding elements (nail heads, knots, wood defects, etc.) and eliminate them. Irregularities are usually cut off or carefully cleaned with sandpaper. Another option is to cover them with varnish or drying oil.

In addition, the floor is cleaned of previous coatings using either hand scrapers or a special sanding machine, and additionally polished if desired.

Professional equipment for cleaning and polishing wood is an expensive pleasure, so it makes no sense to buy it for 1 time. You can either hire a craftsman or rent the equipment.

Protective mixtures, which must first be impregnated with wooden floors, can be of the following varieties:

  • flame retardant chemicals - used in public or industrial premises, reduce the fire hazard of wood;
  • antiseptic solutions that protect the floor from fungus, mold, insects, etc. household premises carry out surface impregnation with antiseptics, in industrial - deeper;
  • oil mixtures - allow not only to protect and strengthen the tree, but also to give the coating a luxurious shine and smoothness.

To finish the floor, paints and varnishes are used, which can be transparent (lacquer) or opaque, coloring the surface.

Varnishes for floors of residential premises must not contain caustic substances. Most often, alkyd, most durable varnishes are purchased, but even they do not fully protect the surface from frequent mechanical stress.

Paints used for painting the floor (see the appropriate indication on the jar):

  • alkyd;
  • acrylic;
  • polyurethane;
  • perchlorovinyl;
  • oil;
  • water-dispersion.

The first three names from the list are the most popular, as they are the easiest to use and give a high-quality result. The most environmentally friendly are water-dispersion paints, which also have excellent moisture resistance and the ability not to lose color brightness. This paint is suitable for any room in the apartment. In the case of parquet, it is better to choose alkyd paint, and when painting wooden floors in the bathroom or in the kitchen - acrylic.

Both varnish and paint are applied in several layers, each time giving several days for the floor to dry completely.

Instruments

The list of tools for painting the floor includes:

  • scraper machine or kit for preparatory work floor cleaning:
  • cycle;
    scrapers;
    sandpaper;
    solvents;

  • painting wide brushes for initial painting;
  • rollers for finishing works;
  • small brushes that allow you to carefully paint over “difficult” places near walls, baseboards, etc .;
  • special paint for the floor;
  • enamel or lacquer to give floors a gloss, smooth structure and extra durability.

The amount of paint is calculated based on the premise that per 1 sq. m. the surface will take about 220 g of material (plus - minus 50 g), if it is laid in 2 layers.

If you pre-treat the floor surface, remember that the paint must match the type of primer.

It is customary to paint over the floor, moving from the window to the door. Masters recommend laying thin rails as guides, especially if you are new to painting work.

After painting work, try not to damage the fresh coating. Often this happens when rearranging pieces of furniture. To keep the floor beautiful and unscathed, place sliding mats under the furniture or glue small cork pads to the installation sites of the headset.

When choosing paint for the floor in your apartment, consider the following factors:

  • type of wood;
  • the average intensity of external influences on the floor;
  • humidity in the room.

Knowing these parameters, you will not get lost in the store and will be able to choose the most suitable paint and varnish material.

Re-treatment of the floor about a few weeks after the final painting will help extend its life even more.

Paint your wood floor properly, maintain it regularly and it will serve you for a long time.

Wood has been one of the main building materials for hundreds of years. AT wooden house a special atmosphere is created, because wood is actually the only material that can “breathe”, as well as disinfect the air and maintain a favorable level of humidity.

That is why the decoration of such a house is made from environmentally friendly materials. The floor in it in most cases is also wooden. Naturally, the question arises of what is in a wooden house, so that they not only have a beautiful appearance, but also retain their natural qualities as much as possible.

Function of decorative wood flooring

Wood in the interior always creates a special comfort, which primarily applies to the floor, whether it be board or parquet. In addition, such a floor is distinguished by reliability, strength, excellent thermal insulation and antistatic properties.

But, on the other hand, the wooden floor, due to its natural properties, has a number of disadvantages. These are low moisture resistance, flammability, susceptibility to decay and a soft structure, due to which the coating wears out during operation, scratches and dents appear on it, and under the influence of humidity and temperature changes, the tree is deformed.

In fact, all floors, regardless of the type of wood, have these disadvantages, and therefore, when determining what is in a wooden house, you need to think about how to choose a coating that will also protect them.

To date, for high-quality finishing of a wooden floor, protection from external influences and increasing its durability, there are several types of coatings. These are transparent - varnishes, oils and waxes, as well as opaque - enamels and paints.

When choosing a coating, you should know that wood has a different degree of softness, and when deciding what is the best way to paint a wooden floor in a house, you need to dwell on the one that best suits its characteristics.

Lacquer coating

Modern varnishes protect the wooden floor from mold, fungus, insects, give the surface a shine and effectively show the natural texture.

Varnishes based on polyurethane or organic solvents emphasize natural, dry quickly and gain the necessary strength, but over time the wood may darken and acquire a yellowish tint.

Water-dispersion varnishes, despite the fact that they perfectly show and maintain the natural color of wood, do not change its appearance at all during long-term operation. But they dry much longer, and gain strength not earlier than after 10 days.

When deciding how to paint the floors in a wooden house, you should be aware that varnishes are not used in cases where the floor board has been impregnated with drying oil or other oil-containing compounds. Also, they are not recommended to cover the floor in rooms with high humidity, and outside the house - a porch,

oil coating

Modern oil compositions for flooring contain natural oils (linseed, soybean) and which makes it possible to preserve wood well, increasing its wear resistance.

With the help of oils, you can both preserve the natural color of wood, and give it a variety of shades. Depending on the color scheme of the interior, it is also determined what color to paint the floor in a wooden house. So, with the help of oils, the floor can be made white and even black. Give it a yellowish, reddish, beige shade up to deep brown.

Compared to varnish, oil, penetrating through the pores of wood, impregnates it quite deeply. Despite the fact that protective film very thin, the floor covered with oil becomes wear-resistant and durable without losing its natural look.

But such a coating is not suitable for floors in rooms where humidity is high and temperature changes are observed, as well as finishing parquet or boards when arranging the "warm floor" system.

wax coating

The basis of the wax composition for the floor is beeswax and linseed oil. The floors covered with it not only perfectly preserve the natural color and texture of wood, but also acquire a silky-matt surface with a golden shimmer.

But when deciding how to paint the floors in a wooden house, it should be taken into account that, being moisture resistant, such floors are not resistant to abrasive and mechanical stress. In addition, they require constant care, which is an expensive pleasure. Therefore, in residential premises, wax is used to cover the floor quite rarely.

Wood floor paints

In addition to the transparent coatings listed above, opaque coatings are also widely used. These are paints that completely cover the surface of the wood, hide its texture and give it any color.

To decide what paint to paint the wooden floor in the house, you need to know that their range is quite large, and each type has certain properties.

These can be enamels - oil, alkyd, pentaphthalic and nitrocellulose, as well as paints - acrylic, water-dispersion and latex.

Enamels have a wide range of colors, and after covering and completely drying the floor on the surface, they form a durable film (glossy or matte), thanks to which it becomes resistant to moisture and temperature extremes. But the enamel dries, depending on the type, for a long time, up to 36 hours.

As for everyone, they are used very widely, because they create a wear-resistant coating, and the color range includes more than 2000 colors.

New wooden floor

The new floor, which has never been painted before, does not require preliminary preparation and cleaning of the old coating. There is room for fantasy here. When deciding how to paint a new wooden floor in a house, you should build on your tastes and interior features.

If you want to completely recreate the atmosphere wooden house and preserve the color and texture of wood, then preference should be given to transparent coatings.

If the interior design involves a certain color of the floor, then you can choose tint varnishes or opaque coatings.

The wooden floor is environmentally friendly and is able to maintain an optimal microclimate in the room. Compared to other coatings, it is stronger and more durable. But it needs special protection. If you do not carry out special processing, then the material will begin to rot very quickly, deform and fill with harmful microorganisms.

The advantage of wooden floors

Such an element in the house has many positive qualities, but the main ones are:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • low thermal conductivity comfortable temperature held regardless of the time of year);
  • ease of installation;
  • long service life and the possibility of repair.

In private houses, when installing the floor, it is recommended to use boards made of oak and ash. They are the most durable, so they will last a long time. The only downside is their high cost. As a worthy alternative, you can choose materials such as cedar, larch or pine.

It is important to choose properly dried boards, the moisture content of which will not exceed 12%.

Training

Painting wooden floors is considered an easy task, but before that it is necessary to perform some procedures:

  • Remove all foreign objects from the room, remove furniture, remove curtains.
  • Remove dirt, debris, and it is better to wash the floor thoroughly hot water with added soap.
  • If there are remnants of the old coating, then it must be removed, for this it is recommended to use a grinder, spatulas or a metal brush.
  • Carry out a complete inspection of the workroom, whether there are any mold damage on the surfaces, and then treat everything with antiseptic and antifungal solutions. If there are areas affected by rot, then you need to replace them with new material.
  • It is good to drown the heads of nails and self-tapping screws, and sand the boards that have dried out.
  • If there are traces of fat and wax, you need to get rid of it, this is done with white spirit or garden mortar.
  • Before using paint for a wooden floor, you need to treat the coating with a primer or drying oil, in the future this will protect against the process of decay and mold formation.

putty

This procedure must be done before applying any paintwork material. You can buy ready-made mixes or make them yourself:

  1. PVA (polyvinyl acetate) and chalk are mixed together, if necessary, sawdust can be added to the mixture. As a result, a thick creamy solution should come out, after complete drying of which a reliable coating will be obtained, allowing you to fill large gaps and bevels.
  2. Another option is a mixture of chalk and acrylic lacquer.
  3. Nitrolacquer, it contains sawdust and lime.

Before choosing how to paint the floors in a wooden house, you need to putty according to the following scheme:

  1. You need to select the material only in the color of the composition for staining.
  2. The voids are filled between the boards with tow or ropes (they must first be soaked with oxol or glue water). If the gaps are large, then you can use sawdust putty (mix in proportions - 2: 5: 5: 14 wood glue, sawdust cement and water).
  3. The irregularities that remain are sanded with an abrasive or sandpaper.
  4. If some irregularities, cracks, roughness or flaws are visible on the plank surface, then they can be opened with a double layer of putty.
  5. The surface is then cleaned and primed again. Particular attention is paid to the treated areas.

Types of coatings

If you need to paint wooden floors, then it is initially recommended to decide on the tasks that will be assigned to them. Most often, a person needs them to:

  • served as long as possible;
  • looked quite aesthetically pleasing;
  • didn't cost a lot of money.

As the saying goes general classification coatings, they are divided into categories:

  1. Transparent - used to form the color and structure of the tree, while they remarkably protect the structure of the coating, these include varnishes of various textures.
  2. Opaque is various types paints that completely sketch the wood.

What paint is better to paint wooden floors

There are a huge number of different coatings that have an opaque structure. Used quite often due to the variety color solutions and quality features. The main compositions that are the most popular are distinguished:

  • Oil paint for a wooden floor is suitable for use in a country house or country house and has practically no competitors. The cover becomes firm and even. If we consider durability, then this composition will not last very long. Cracks will appear and the shine will soon be lost.
  • Alkyd composition is used on external and internal coatings. The main disadvantage is the unbearable smell, which disappears for a long time.
  • Acrylic substances - good decision for flooring. The main advantage is frost resistance and water resistance. A huge variety of shades allows fantasy to play out properly.
  • If the question arose of how to paint the floors in a wooden house and strength and durability are required from this coating, then it is best to choose polyurethane. The only downside is that it is toxic on the job, so it needs to be handled with care.

In order to choose the right composition for desired type coverage, it is necessary to take into account certain factors:

  • type of wood;
  • signs of surface operation;
  • coating and dye compatibility.

varnish

If you want to preserve the texture and beauty of the coating from natural material, then you can use a wear-resistant varnish for a wooden floor. After applying such a substance, the flooring turns out to be especially spectacular. The component performs a protective function, and also helps to stop the decay of the boards. The most practical options that are commonly used are the following compositions:

  • Alkyd - produced on the basis of resins and organic components. The substance helps to make the structure waterproof and durable.
  • Oil - made only from natural substances. The main advantage is the change in the colors of the coating. Provides good strength and durability.
  • Nitrolac - is quick-drying, but its composition, which contains substances harmful to the body, is considered a huge minus.
  • Acrylic - its main component is water. The product is completely odorless. It perfectly preserves the natural color and texture of wood. Most often used to add shine and improve the strength of the coating.
  • Epoxy is considered the most versatile, as it can protect any surface. If you need to choose how to paint the floors in a wooden house, then this tool is the best. Since it forms a solid layer that is not susceptible to external damage. It is great for outdoor work.
  • The varnish, which contains alcohol, dries almost immediately and is included in the group of environmentally friendly substances.
  • Yacht - widely used for wooden decking. Differs in availability in the price and the maximum wear resistance. Good elastic material, forms a neat design of floor structures.

Coating instructions

In order to spend decorative works, you need the following tools:

  • brush;
  • roller;
  • putty;
  • sandpaper;
  • putty knife;
  • masking tape;
  • primer;
  • paint or varnish.

How to paint the floors in a wooden house is already known, now you need to figure out how to do it right:

  1. The surface is thoroughly washed warm water with added soap. Next, all flaws are removed with a spatula, and all roughness is processed with sandpaper.
  2. Then the surface needs to be primed. The mixture is applied to all existing pits to completely level the coating.
  3. When the previous ball has dried, several layers of putty are applied. After it dries completely, re-treatment with sandpaper is required.
  4. When all adjacent surfaces are isolated with masking tape, you can proceed to applying the coloring matter.
  5. Skirting boards are immediately processed, and then you can proceed to direct staining.
  6. For coating, it is better to choose a roller and apply the composition in two layers, the latter being formed only after the first has completely dried.
  7. After a few days, the boards are washed with warm water. If paint was chosen for a wooden floor, then after that you can open the coating once with varnish, which will help protect the surface from premature wiping.

decoration

For applying any elements for decoration, it is best to use quick dry paint for wooden floor:

  • The effect of the striped print looks very nice - when applied, the brush moves in different directions.
  • The formation of a rhombic pattern is a monochrome combination of warm and cold tones.
  • Hexagons - best used for decorating kitchens, hallways and toilets.
  • Painting - includes the application of a genre painting or carpet, as well as the formation of a floral or abstract ornament.

Care

In order for the coating not to fade, in the first days after the end of the drying process, it is required to wash it well with hot water, but without adding soap. And then the same procedure is repeated every day using a damp cloth.

To remove the smell of the coating, you need to bring several small containers filled with salt water into the room and leave them there for 3-4 days.

In order to achieve high-quality results, the following recommendations should be considered:

  • Paint for a wooden floor needs to be selected only with high quality, so it is better to give your preference to trusted and well-known companies.
  • To work in living rooms, you need to buy odorless wood floor paint. The price of such a product, of course, is higher than that of the usual one (about 500 rubles per liter of imported product), but you can immediately move to such a room after the coating has completely dried.
  • When choosing materials, you should always take into account the structure of the floor, the operational purpose and the type of wood.
  • For painting, it is recommended to use oil or special thickened paints or varnishes, as they have high wear resistance.
  • If water often affects the surface, then it is better to buy acrylic compounds.

Painting a wooden floor or varnishing can be carried out independently, even if you do not have experience in finishing work. You need to carefully consider the choice of paint, the necessary tools and the observance of the technology for painting wood surfaces.

floor painting

Preparing a previously painted floor

Before you paint your wood floor, you need to prepare it. Required Tools and materials:

  • putty knife;
  • White Spirit;
  • soda ash;
  • chisel;
  • hammer and nails;
  • sawdust, glue, tow or rope;
  • drying oil or primer on wood;
  • putty (floor colors);

  10. Apply a second layer of putty with a wide spatula.
  11. Sand the surface after drying.
  12. Clean the floor from the dust left after grinding and apply drying oil. Dry 48-72 hours.

Floor putty

Types of materials for painting wood floors

Before painting a wooden floor, you need to choose the right coating. Factors to consider when choosing paint:

  • Old floor or new. Paint has already been applied to the old floor. To paint over it, you need to select dark colors of paint or other means that provide a dense coating. You can try to remove the layer old paint and paint the floor with a transparent coloring compound. But this is not always possible. The old painted floor is so deformed that it is difficult to sand, and the old coating does not want to be cleaned off. A new wooden surface does not need to be painted over, but it is enough to cover it with one of the transparent materials.

Varnishing
  • Type of wood. beautiful drawing on the surface of a tree of many species does not require painting, but looks attractive under a layer of varnish: transparent or suitable color. The properties of wood (porosity, density, etc.) require the selection of a coloring composition with the necessary characteristics. Each material penetrates the wood to different depths and affects it differently.

wood with clear coating
  • The nature of the room. In public areas, the load on the floor is much higher. And the coating must be durable. For comparison, the service life of oil paint is 3 years, enamel - up to 6 years. Another indicator is the fire resistance of the coating. On sale there are special impregnations that increase it.
  • Temperature and humidity in the room. Different coloring compositions react differently to exposure high humidity and temperature fluctuations in the room. Therefore, choosing a product for painting the floor in the kitchen or on outdoors, it is necessary to carefully study the characteristics of the selected material.

Wooden floor in the bathroom

How to paint a wooden floor in a private house? Types of wood surface coating materials:

  • opaque - paints, enamels;
  • translucent - some types of varnishes;
  • transparent - varnishes, impregnations, oils, waxes.

Paints, enamels, varnishes

Paints, enamels and varnishes are divided into two types according to the type of solvent:

  • organic-soluble - based on drying oil, oil, solvents, latex;
  • water soluble.

Water-based formulations are characterized by the absence of a pungent odor, relatively low toxicity.

According to the type of resins, paints and varnishes are distinguished:

  • acrylic - are water-soluble, acrylic varnish is not very resistant to abrasion;
  • alkyd - dry quickly, have average indicators for the necessary characteristics;
  • polyurethane - create a durable coating, environmentally friendly, but more expensive than others;
  • polyurethane-acrylic - have worse characteristics compared to polyurethane due to the addition of acrylic resins to reduce the cost;
  • urethane - have an average resistance to abrasion, otherwise they are not inferior to polyurethane;
  • urethane-alkyd - similar in characteristics to urethane, but thanks to alkyd resins, they are resistant to mechanical stress;
  • epoxy - have excellent mechanical properties, but are very toxic; alcohol - create a mechanically strong coating, with good gloss, but unstable in relation to high humidity;
  • oil - at the base of drying oil, vegetable oils, dry for a long time, have bad smell an affordable option.

Important! Paint, like any other material, must be purchased from the same batch.

Painting

How to paint a wooden floor? The number of coats of primer, putty and paint to be applied depends on the condition of the floor:

in perfect condition - one coat of primer (or drying oil),

two coats of paint (if the floor has been previously painted, sometimes one coat is enough);

with damage - a layer of primer, a thick layer of putty, sanding, several layers of primer (so that the putty becomes invisible), two layers of paint;

heavily damaged - primer layer, several layers of putty (each sanded after drying), primer layer, three layers of paint;

numerous cracks and other defects - a layer of primer, two layers of putty, a layer of gauze (recessed in putty), a layer of putty, a layer of primer, three layers of paint.

Required tools:

  • flat paint brushes of different sizes;
  • paint rollers;
  • masking tape;
  • tray or other container for the coloring composition.

The main part of the work on painting a wooden floor is more convenient to carry out with a short pile roller. The silicone roller will provide the least paint consumption. Brushes paint the floor in narrow and hard-to-reach places. Masking tape protects surfaces that should not be painted. It is more convenient to use a tray as a container for paint. On the one hand, it has a raised edge, on which you can remove excess coloring composition from brushes and rollers.

Coloring of prepared wooden floors is carried out in the following order:

  1. Pour the paint from the can into a tray or other container and mix.
  2. Stick painter's tape on the wallpaper, skirting boards.
  3. Apply the coloring composition with a roller. Press against the embossed surface of the paint tray. The layer must be thin, otherwise the paint will peel off quickly. Move the roller away from you, along the wood fibers, without lifting it from the floor.
  4. Use brushes to paint areas inaccessible to the roller. Hold the brush at an angle, slightly pressing to the floor.
  5. After the first layer has dried (up to 72 hours), apply the second, and then (if necessary) the third. Each subsequent layer dries longer.
  6. After complete drying, in order to remove the remnants of drying oil or oil, the painted floor is wiped with warm water for several days in a row (you can add vinegar). Soap, powders or soda should not be used.

Important! Each coat of primer, putty, paint must be completely dry before applying the next.

Alternatively, you can paint the wooden floor not with one paint, but with several, creating a stencil pattern.

Drawings on the wooden floor

Varnishing

Painting a wooden floor with a clear or colored varnish has some peculiarities. 4-5 thin layers are applied with a roller, in one direction, drying each one thoroughly. Starting with the second layer, before applying the next, the floor surface is polished with sandpaper. If air bubbles have formed on the varnished surface, then immediately after applying the next layer of varnish, it is enough to brush over them with the tip of the brush.

Is it possible to paint a wooden floor with varnish without a primer? In this case, a solution is prepared for the first layer: one or two parts of varnish are added to one part of water. The remaining layers are applied with varnish of the usual concentration.

Colored varnishes for wood

Impregnation

Impregnations are used to treat wooden surfaces, including floors. They additionally perform protective functions - they prevent decay, the appearance of insects (antiseptics) and increase the fire resistance of wood (flame retardants). There are two types of impregnation - superficial and deep. At home, apply superficial. Impregnations may have various colors and applied, like paint, with a roller or brush.

Floor under tinted impregnation

Oils and waxes

The floor covered with oil becomes warm, less slippery, acquires antistatic properties. The oil penetrates deep into the wood and reliably protects the board from moisture and mold. Wherein wooden surface remains “breathable”, unlike lacquered. Oil coating is used where varnish cannot be used. Most often it is used for floors made of exotic woods, as well as oak and ash. Wooden floor coverings, laid on a “warm floor”, it is also recommended to treat with oil compositions, and not with varnishes or paint. Plank floor oil can be hard or soft wax based. It enhances the protective properties of this material. As well as impregnations, oils can give the tree different colors.

Floor preparation for oil application is carried out in the same way as for paint. When grinding, do not use fine-grained sandpaper, otherwise you can close the pores of the wood. The oil composition is applied to the wooden floor in two ways: hot and cold. Hot provides deep penetration of oil into wood. Necessary tools: single-disc polisher, and to it a beige and white pad.

The procedure for applying oil with a hot method:

  1. Preheat the floor (you can use a building hair dryer).
  2. Heat the oil in a water bath to 80°C.
  3. Apply the hot oil compound to the floor surface with a spatula and rub in thoroughly with a beige pad.
  4. If the floor is in a room where an increased load is expected, then after two hours apply a second layer of oil.
  5. Two days after the floor treatment, apply a layer of heated wax, rubbing into the surface.
  6. After three hours, polish the surface with a white pad.

Important! The oil-painted floor is ready for use in seven days. It is not recommended to wash or carpet during the first month of service. Subsequently, wipe with a dry cloth or mop. Wet cleaning can be carried out using special means. Then the surface is polished with a woolen cloth.

Oil on wood floor

Conclusion

Do-it-yourself painting of a wooden floor is not only an easy way to save on the cost of professional finishers, but also an opportunity to decorate the rooms in the house in an original way.

What color to paint the floor will depend on the design of the room. But here the main point will be the material of manufacture and the external environment. It is on these grounds that it is necessary to decide what paint to paint the floor.

Today we will consider this issue and give recommendations on application materials. You can also see the video and photo in this article where there will be a lot of useful and necessary information on this issue.

It is quite possible to apply any coating with your own hands, from this the price will not be high. The main thing is to decide what to apply correctly. Many materials are offered on the sales market, but this does not mean at all that any can be used.

It is necessary to look at which and where before choosing better fit. Below is an instruction on the characteristics of different types of dyes.

Impenetrable paints

Usually, wood floors are painted with impervious paint or coatings that have no color. Various pigments step into the structure of these, which show the natural texture of the tree during the application period.

You will be able to meet the following types of impervious paints on the market:

  • Acrylic
  • Polyurethane
  • Alkyd
  • Perchlorovinyl
  • Oil.

We will analyze the pros and cons (if they exist) of any type of material.

PVC paints

They are used for the purpose of coloring wood planes, both inside and out. They have great weather resistance characteristics, a rich color palette with bright colors and are quite inexpensive. However, along with these advantages, there are also disadvantages, the factor of which perchlorovinyl colors "retire".

It is possible to include them:

  • Virulence, since an unstable organic solvent enters the color structure, evaporating from the plane of the tree, it has a negative effect on human health, and such volatile elements are quite fire hazardous;
  • Coating cracking I;
  • Significant level of fading.

Oil dyes

Oil paints almost 10 years ago were used with wild triumph among buyers. However, not because they were excellent, but because there was no other selection. Despite today, some people prefer to purchase oil paints directly in order to improve the floor in their own buildings and apartments.

  • They have a bright deep tone, an even homogeneous texture, significant stability to changes in temperature systems and, most importantly, low cost.
  • The disadvantage can be considered a long drying time, it will take about a day when this paint dries, which is extremely, extremely sad. In our time period, no one prefers a long wait. After a few years, you will no longer be pleased with a smooth and shiny floor. And you will begin to see a rough and periodically even cracked plane.
  • If you think about how to paint plywood on the floor, then an oil dye is completely suitable. After all, plywood has a thickness limit and oil paint will perfectly protect it.

Polyurethane paints

They are characterized by great signs of wear resistance and stability to external influences, excellent safety qualities and durability, however, along with this, they also have disadvantages (as without their absence).

  • Polyurethane paints have significant toxicity due to organic solvents entering their structure.
  • The price of such materials is quite high.

Alkyd paints

They are used to protect wood planes from inside the rooms and externally. They are characterized by significant resistance to precipitation and various fluctuations in temperature and colorful colors. However, the disadvantages of such paints will force you to think 100 times rather than take risks in acquiring them.

  • During the dyeing period, a very powerful special aroma is carried, it remains even after drying. Of course, do not think that it will be necessary for you to breathe paint for a lifetime, of course not. It is better for everyone, without exception, to be in a different place during this period, so breathing such air is risky for well-being, and after a few days, maybe a few weeks, the “smell” disappears.
  • The organic solvents that enter the structure are quite flammable, for this reason the paint quickly and simply catches fire. Acrylic dispersion paints have been used in great demand in the past years and not in vain!

They have a number of positive aspects:

  • great weather resistance
  • moisture resistance
  • cold resistance
  • burnout resistance
  • large color palette (more than two thousand different colors)
  • reliability (up to ten years of service in the absence of the smallest wrangling).

Of course, the only gloomy circumstance upsets good view- the cost of acrylic paints is quite high, of course, and the selection of manufacturers is not already huge in this way. Therefore, in Russian Federation no such product is currently being produced. In this case, everything that comes to us "over the hill" is not always of good quality.

For this reason, when choosing acrylic paints, be careful, drawing your attention to the label and the state of the manufacturer. For a wooden floor from Spain or Germany, the paint is no worse than the widely advertised Finnish one.

Their structure is almost identical, of course, and the properties are similar. Why pay more, if it is possible to purchase the exact same, but with the most attractive cost.

Colorless coatings for wooden surfaces

Transparent varnishes and impregnating agents belong to this type of paints and varnishes. We will analyze each type separately.

Impregnations can also be attributed to colorless dyes:

  • Acrylic differ in significant absorbency into wood. This makes it possible to save the floor plane to the maximum. Such impregnations have every chance of having different colors, with the help of which it is possible to form an unusual and magnificent design. An ordinary bunch or roller, the composition is applied. Spraying is also provided, since not everyone is able to spend two hours of their own required period in smearing the impregnation on the floor.
  • Oil impregnations are used to protect, maintain and tint logs. They are perfectly impregnated, which is why the plane of the wood becomes strong, sparkling, even the most moisture resistant. For impregnation, the oil is made from natural modified resins, usually linseed or wood oils.
  • The area of \u200b\u200bits use is quite sweeping: living rooms, guest rooms, kitchens, bathrooms (see), a village, a pool, in total, almost everywhere, including in a place where there is no heating. It is easy to renew the oil impregnation, if you add specialized products to the water for mopping.
  • Lacquers own the weight of the positive sides. They leave the natural beauty of wood, protect the floor plane from the harmful effects of external conditions, but in no way represent the absolute verge of enjoying the varnished floor, since a thin varnish film is in no way able to protect the flooring from chipping, impact, or any loads.
  • Including when the varnish has completely dried up, without exception, it also remains quite flexible, mobile and moves with each defect simultaneously with wood fibers. In general, there is no sacrifice, for the sake of charm, to move on the lacquered floor only in slippers with delicate soles.

Aspects of floor paint selection

There are several criteria according to which you need to choose the color for the floor.

Here they are:

  • Type of flooring(wood (see) or concreted);
  • Floor loads;
  • Wood texture (log origin);
  • Where will the painting be done? a: inside a ventilated or non-ventilated building, outdoors, this implies a continuous accumulation of weather precipitation on the plane, in circumstances of high atmospheric moisture, and so on;
  • Certain paints call for specific circumstances, and this: epoxy paints, to the sample, must be done only in well-ventilated rooms, in which case latex-acrylic paints are excellent for non-ventilated rooms;

Attention: For paint and varnish compositions of concreted placement, it is necessary to take into account in which place the repair and construction activities will be laid: if the room is of an apartment type, then it is necessary to select a paint that has less toxicity.

In a similar way, by understanding several options, you will be able to provide a detailed representation of the desired coloration to the merchant - the expert of the mall. The trader - an expert should simply after that advise you on which paint to choose for painting the flooring.

Wood flooring

Wood flooring should be coated with a paint and varnish composition. It is considered low wear resistance of this type of material used.

Thus, if the wood is left and not covered with anything, it is unlikely that it will last for you more than two, 3 years. After a little time, moldiness, decay can occur on it, it will begin to swell, dry out and change shape, for this reason it is not unimportant to choose a more optimal type of color for the log.

Without exception, paint and varnish coatings for logs can be divided into 2 types: colorless and impenetrable. Colorless coatings are specialized varnishes for parquet, where this type makes it possible to highlight the natural beauty of the tree. However, this topic is for another note.

However, we are interested in covering the flooring with this or that paint, and if we touch on multi-colored ones, in this case, in the period of our grandparents, oil paint from natural goods was definitely used. In most situations, the paint was made from ocher, and the most common color was blood-chestnut (red).

The problem is that directly this kind of tone, according to the judgment of the paint manufacturers of these times, was able to perfectly hide the dirt in the floor.

  • Dispersion acrylic paints allow wood flooring to “breathe”.
  • Until now, there are on store shelves oil paints, are sold at an affordable price, the staining procedure is quite simple. A strong coating that is formed as a result of applying color to wood flooring. It is guaranteed to serve you for about five years.
  • Dispersive acrylic paint has several positive aspects above others: high coefficient of vapor permeability (ability to “breathe”), solvents are not included in the composition in any way (thus the least type of fire hazard, no toxicity), the greatest adhesion to wood, lightness and practicality of the floor covering, optimal protection against ultraviolet radiation, with proper care, the period of operation reaches twenty years.

Attention: If after an indefinite period of time you wish to repaint the flooring with a different type of paintwork material, in this case, try a water-acrylic solution. This mixture will give the minimum "opposition" from among absolutely any paint and varnish materials!

  • Opaque enamels have every chance of being used due to their low cost and simplicity, but in addition to this, they perfectly overcome moisture, possessing a powerful waterproof quality.
  • Enamel paint generally dries faster on wood decking.
  • The enamel adheres well to the plane of the log, without breaking through into its texture. As a result, the period of operation of the wood coating is significantly increased. Another advantage of this type of paintwork material is the rapid drying period.

Concrete flooring

Let's try to figure out how to choose a color for concrete slab flooring (see), because this kind of plane needs to be painted over according to most circumstances. In this case, do not forget that dust formation will regularly form in the unpainted concrete coating.

Do not forget, apart from this, that concrete slabs not provided with paints and varnishes have every chance of being a factor in injuries (it is possible to stumble).

Attention: Here you will find the answer to how to paint the self-leveling floor. In the matter of concrete, the main factor will be the peeling of the dye. Therefore, before painting, it will be necessary to carry out a primer of the plane, only then the coating will hold.

  • In general, paint from epoxy resin, which is thus referred to as "epoxy". Applying an already delicate coating to a concrete coating provides you with an increase in wear resistance many times over (it is more correct to apply paint in 2 layers in general: first, a thin layer is applied, which must be allowed to dry for about a day, then covered with a 2nd layer of huge thickness) .
  • Epoxy paint owns a waterproof result, increases the degree of overload. The most resistant to the influence of chemical elements, in addition, it has excellent adhesion to the concrete surface.
  • Epoxy paints are suitable in exposed areas for concrete floors.
  • Suppose you need to cover the flooring in an open area, in which case you can directly select this type of paintwork material.
  • It should be noted separately the innovative concreted paint coatings, which are presented from European manufacturers. They are capable of withstanding heavy loads. Such colors are more suitable for industrial areas, but it should be noted that Europeans paint floors in stadiums, where one of the drawbacks is the high price of the product.

If you decide how to paint the floor in the steam room, then there is only one question, nothing is better, because here, in addition to the humid environment, the high temperature also affects and therefore any dye will not be safe. What paint to paint the floor in other materials of manufacture, you can easily find in the article. The main thing is not the price of the dye, the main thing is that it be safe and durable.
