How to stick ceiling ceilings from the center. How to learn how to glue ceiling tiles - step by step instructions

 • 27.06.2020

Among the numerous options for ceiling finishes, gluing foam tiles is simple and fast to implement. The decorative qualities of the finished coating can be assessed as average, which is suitable for most apartments.

Varieties of material

Ceiling tiles are commercially available in several varieties. The differences relate not only to the pattern or texture, but also to such characteristics of the material as density, resistance to mechanical stress, thickness, ability to color, etc.

Classification of products is carried out according to the method of manufacture:

 • extruded. It has a smooth, non-grained surface. The good density of the material makes it possible to reduce the thickness of individual elements to 2-3 mm. Extruded tiles other than traditional white color, can be decorated in various shades. Imitations of natural materials such as marble or wood look especially beautiful. The elements are painted in factory conditions: if you try to do it yourself, the paint starts to “roll off”. Foamed polystyrene is used as a manufacturing material. Thanks to light weight products of this type are easy to glue and maintain. The price of extruded products is quite high.
 • Foam or stamped. It has a looser structure with clearly visible grains. Due to the presence of pores on the surface, it becomes dirty rather quickly. In order to create an additional barrier to dirt, acrylic dispersion painting is used. Stamped plates have a thickness of 6-12 mm. For drawing a picture on a foam surface, a pressing method is used. The fragility of the products must be taken into account before gluing the ceiling tiles. Taking into account possible losses, it is recommended to make a stock of at least 10% when purchasing material. Stamped ceiling panels are considered the cheapest.
 • injection. During manufacture, polystyrene foam is baked in special matrices. The material of this type is distinguished by a well-defined pattern. The cost of injection products is average. It's easy to work with her.

For a beginner who does not have experience in construction work, it is better to choose extruded polystyrene products for gluing the ceiling with foam tiles. Next in terms of quality are injection panels. In the last place - stamped tiles.

The following can be said about the appearance: all ceiling tiles most often look like 50x50 cm squares. Rectangular elements are less common. According to the type of joining, products are divided into seamless and with seams. As for the decorative design of the elements, they are geometric, floral, without a pattern, with a variety of textures.

How to calculate the required amount of material

Before you paste over the ceiling with tiles, you need to accurately determine the right amount of material. The task is simple, given the fixed dimensions and the square configuration of the elements. A simple calculation shows that 4 tiles are required for pasting 1 m 2 of overlap. Knowing the total area of the ceiling, you can determine the number finishing material by simply multiplying the area by 4.

For example, you can calculate how many ceiling tiles you need for a room measuring 3.2 x2.8 m. By multiplying the width and length, we get an area indicator of 8.96 m 2. You need to round up: it turns out 9 m 2. Next, the number of ceiling elements is determined - 4 pcs x 9 m2 = 36 pcs. It is recommended to always take a little more material, taking into account undercutting and unplanned losses. The specific number of spare elements depends on the installation scheme, but usually it is 10-20% of the total.

To achieve the external aesthetics of foam ceilings, you need to pay attention not only to the external design. Another important point- product geometry. All elements must have the same size, thickness and even 90-degree angles. The drawing should have good clarity, without any layers on the side ends. When buying pressed boards, it is recommended to choose models with the smallest possible grains.

Adhesive selection

As a fixing agent for gluing the ceiling with tiles, the following means are used:

 • Glue. We are talking about compounds such as "Titan", "Naset", "Moment" or liquid nails. The holding capacity of these compounds is very good. The speed of gluing is limited by the need to maintain a pause after laying each element for 10-15 seconds before. The Moment “grasps” a little faster.
 • Adhesive mastics for ceiling tiles. They have a pasty consistency and are packaged in plastic buckets of small volume. These compositions are more convenient: they are odorless and provide instant sticking of the smeared element. As a result, the process of finishing the ceiling is implemented without any hitches.
 • Gypsum putty. This version of the mounting material is usually used in cases where the surface to be finished contains noticeable defects (for example, differences at the joints between ceiling tiles). If the irregularities are small (up to 5 mm) - finishing putty is used, if significant - starting material.

It should be understood that it will not be possible to smooth out too large differences with ceiling tiles. In such cases, it is better to carry out a full leveling of the ceiling, or to use suspension systems (plasterboard, tension, armstrong).

Preparatory activities

The quality of the implementation of the procedure, how to prepare the ceiling for gluing tiles, largely depends on the durability of the finish. Before pasting the ceiling with ceiling tiles, the floor surface must be completely cleaned of the previous finish - wallpaper, whitewash, paint, putty, etc. In order for it to lag behind better, pre-wetting the entire surface with water is used. In cases where old paint or the putty is holding tight, it can be left. It is also necessary to knock down all protruding sections, using a pickaxe or hatchet for this.

All cavities discovered during the preparation of the ceiling for the tile are sealed with a starting putty. To fill the joints between individual floor slabs, a special Perfix compound or glue for tiles. The cleaned surface must be impregnated with a primer: it washes away dust residues and helps to improve the adhesion of the base. Concrete plates it is recommended to treat with "concrete contact", gypsum bases - with any deep penetration impregnation. At this stage, a pause is made in the work for the complete drying of the primer.

Layout scheme

There are two ways of gluing ceiling tiles - regular and diagonal. Diagonal placement is more beautiful, but requires more material. The fact is that the remaining trimmings cannot be applied anywhere. However, the finish obtained in this way does not have pronounced seams.

It is most convenient to start sticking from the chandelier. This makes it possible to organically fit it into the skin: the holder is placed at the intersection of 4 elements that need only a little trimming. If the lighting in the room is organized without the main central chandelier, gluing starts from one of the walls of the room. It is recommended to choose the one that is opposite front door. This will make it possible to place the last cropped row above the head of a person entering the room, which will somewhat hide the discrepancy in size.

Sticking from a chandelier will require preliminary marking. Easiest with square room: the center is determined, and work begins from it. This is done with a masking cord stretched between opposite corners. The point of intersection of the broken lines will become the place of laying the first slab. If a parallel layout is used, two guides are also beaten off through the center to opposite walls.

Two other marking lines connect the installation start point with the nearest walls. Taking this parameter as a guideline, a drawing of squares is made. To get guides for gluing squares, you need to draw diagonal lines. It is on them that the side of the first row will be aligned. If you set the first strip of tiles as correctly as possible, further finishing will not encounter any obstacles.

Sticking technique

The main advantage of foam tiles is the speed of its installation, without the use of special crates or frames. Unlike a conventional ceiling screed, this type of finish can be completed in one working day. Smooth bases can be pasted over with a special glue, applying it in a thin layer.

If there are separate drops on the base, then ordinary mounting glue will not help here: the tile simply will not stick to the surface of uneven areas. There is not always time and effort to carry out labor-intensive leveling activities. Moreover, ceiling tiles are often used during cosmetic repairs in rented apartments or at various social facilities. Therefore, investing large resources in finishing is not very reasonable.

To stick ceiling tiles on an uneven ceiling, as a rule, putty or adhesive for drywall helps. These solutions have good adhesive characteristics. When starting to implement the procedure on how to properly glue the ceiling tiles, it is necessary to check all purchased products for the same color and size. The sags and defects found on the edges are cut off with a clerical knife.

Mounting on a flat base

The procedure for how to properly glue the foam ceiling tiles on a flat surface:

 1. Glue on the tile is smeared with a thin strip around the perimeter and diagonally. You don't need to brush too close to the edge.
 2. The detail is laid out according to the markup.
 3. The attached tile must be held a little on the weight, waiting for the glue to set.
 4. Mount the next panel in the same way. It must be attached to the side of the first element. If there is a drawing, it is combined. When docking, it is important to observe accuracy and accuracy, avoiding the formation of drops.
 5. The same algorithm is repeated when working with the rest of the details.
 6. If there is a need for adjustment, cutting the tiles is carried out on a stable table.

The whole procedure, how to glue tiles on the ceiling, is implemented very quickly and simply. The main thing is to achieve docking accuracy and immediately wipe the glue that comes out at the seams. To make the joints as tight as possible, it is recommended to use a wooden plank when moving the next tile. If you do this by hand, dents may remain on the surface of the squares.

Sticking foam tiles on a curved ceiling

Curved surfaces cannot be styled in the usual way. Sticking ceiling tiles, as a rule, in such cases, plasterboard glue or putty helps. It is prepared in such a way that a pasty mixture is obtained. For spreading on the ceiling, you will need a notched trowel that forms grooves. The amount of mortar to be applied depends on the degree of curvature, but it is best to use the smallest possible layer. It is recommended to spread no more than 1 m 2 of the ceiling at a time (for gluing 4 tiles).

This will make it possible to avoid premature setting of the solution: in this case, the alignment of the elements will not encounter any particular difficulties. Plates are mounted on top of the smeared mortar: they adhere quickly and can be easily moved. After combining the sides of the stacked fragments, they are aligned along the plane using the rule or building level. To do this, press the square in the right place.

After sealing the first section, spread the second, acting in the same way. Orienting the following plates along the plane, you need to take the first section as a basis. If you cannot achieve full horizontality, then you need to at least avoid sharp drops. If possible, it is better not to allow a rapid build-up of the adhesive layer: if its thickness exceeds 3-5 mm, there is a real threat of falling structure finish. If the adhesive gets on the surface of the tile, it must be immediately wiped with a soft sponge. Upon completion of the procedure, how to glue the tiles on the ceiling, separately pass through the seams, filling them with the same putty.

For people who make repairs in the apartment, the question arises of how to finish the ceiling. The most affordable and cheapest material is expanded polystyrene ceiling tiles, it is attached to any base and does not weigh down the ceiling. Although the job seems simple, finishing a ceiling requires experience and knowledge of laying techniques.

When making repairs, first of all, they choose and purchase quality material . Quality indicator - good condition, correct dimensions and clear drawing.

 • Material quality. You can check the quality of the material if you take the panel around the corner and gently shake it. If it does not break or deform, then the material is suitable. Each panel must be of identical dimensions with strong edges and a dense surface.
 • Correct form. Tiles with straight and even edges fit properly on the ceiling, creating a perfect finish. The corner of each panel corresponds to 90 gr., Rectangular or square shape.
 • Quality drawing. The drawing on the panel must be clear and even with the correct relief.

Types of tiles

Ceiling tiles are available in several types and different production method(pressed, extruded and injection).

Using ceiling tiles on walls

A wide range of ceiling tiles made of polystyrene allows you to use them on the ceiling and on the walls. Different in shape and texture imitating wood, metal or stone the tile will become a spectacular decoration, for example, at the head of the bed. There are several options for using the material on the walls, as a simple sticking, additional decoration, or creating a canopy effect.

 • Sticking in a simple way. Pasting material with a pattern at the head of the bed in this way will look interesting. Laminated, white or colored tiles will decorate any bedroom, highlighting the focal area of the room. To visually reduce the wall in a large bedroom, it is laid out across the width of the head of the bed and up to the ceiling. So that a small room does not visually break into pieces, the entire wall is decorated with panels. Using a seamless material gives the impression that the wall panel is solid.
 • Additional decoration. The texture and the desired shade of the wall will be given by painting the tiles. For this, paints of mother-of-pearl shades or with glitter content are suitable. Paints imitating wood, stone, silk will also look spectacular. The combination of panels of various sizes and textures will create a complex pattern that looks like a panel. A section of a wall with tiles will look solid if a decorative frame is made around it.

Not everyone likes to use polystyrene material in their bedroom. A similar decor is created from a material made plaster or polyurethane. The disadvantage of this finish is the complexity of the work and the high cost.

Ceiling tiles - how to glue in different ways, photo

To work, you will need a level, tape measure, a simple pencil, a construction knife and a paint cord. First, prepare the surface for work. The ceiling is completely cleaned and leveled. If the base is sheathed with plywood or chipboard, then they are carefully primed. Panels are glued to a flat, dry, fat-free ceiling surface.

How to glue ceiling tiles? There are several options for gluing: parallel, rhombus or diagonally. Parallel and diagonal masonry is the most common. You can create various combinations of laying using plain or colored tiles: snake, intersecting and alternating lines, in a checkerboard pattern, along the perimeter of the ceiling.

Parallel to the wall

Some apartment owners use the parallel laying method, as it is easier to do. So that the remaining gaps between the wall and the panels are not conspicuous, they begin to glue from the wall opposite the window or door.

Diagonally

Getting to work, the first thing to do is mark the ceiling.

 • To do this, two threads are pulled from the corners of the room. The point of intersection of the threads is the center of the ceiling, from here the laying begins. If a chandelier is located at this point, then the corners at the joints of the ceiling panels are cut off, and the figured glass from the chandelier will close these places.
 • Glue is applied immediately to four panels and allowed to dry. After that, one element is taken and applied with an angle to the center of the ceiling. Then the remaining three panels are glued, creating a central square. Glue is applied to the remaining parts and glued side by side.
 • If the panels on the ceiling lie unevenly, they are cut with a construction knife. The cut element is applied with a cut to the wall. It will not be noticeable when it closes with a ceiling plinth.

How to glue a rhombus ceiling tile

Laying out the panels with a rhombus, more material is consumed. The material is glued with a rhombus according to a special pattern. On the ceiling, from the central point, mark the squares. Then, diagonal lines are marked in each square. The panels are glued, fitting at an angle to the central point of the ceiling, while its sides correspond to the diagonal lines drawn.

How to glue the ceiling

Can ceiling tiles be used in the bathroom

When doing a major overhaul in the bathroom, the question arises of what material can be used to finish the ceiling. If you use ceiling tiles for the bathroom, then the room will look rich and original, and the tiles on the ceiling in the bathroom will be in perfect harmony with the tiled walls. The most reliable tile is extruded. She is issued different colors and drawings, suitable for any interior. Film-coated panels can be washed, other types can be vacuumed or wiped with a dry cloth.

How to glue ceiling tiles

When funds do not allow for a multi-level ceiling design or there are budget restrictions, ceiling tiles are used. This material is unique: with its simplicity, it allows you to update any interior without much effort and the involvement of repair teams.

You can make the ceiling tiling yourself: it will not take much time, and the result will look quite professional.

Peculiarities

Ceiling tiles are mainly square-shaped fragments of different sizes (about 50 x 50 cm) made of natural and synthetic material. If earlier they were exclusively white, today on store shelves you can find blue, beige, pinkish, milky tiles, as well as options with a color pattern. This material, folding into a monolithic canvas, forms different patterns that give the space of any room elegance and comfort.

Ceiling tiles and surface texture differ. It can be matte and glossy. The material is unique in that some of its varieties allow the surface to be painted. Thanks to this, there is no need to re-glue the lining if the surface is dirty. To update, it is enough to roll it with a roller with paint or spatula. So you can maintain a beautiful and fresh appearance of the ceiling for up to 10 years.

A distinctive feature of the material is sound insulation: ceiling tiles make the room warmer, reducing extraneous noise from neighboring apartments. It doesn't matter how thick it is. Depending on the type of material and its density, these raw materials need to be handled carefully and gently. It is necessary to glue such a tile carefully, otherwise, at the time of pasting the ceiling, a fragment can be deformed, leaving unsightly dents on its surface that are visible to the naked eye.

In working with tiles, the possibility of breakage is not ruled out so cutting should be done with a sharp tool. If there are nicks on the cutting blade at the time of cutting, the material may be chipped, which can lead to breaking off the corner. Dirty and rusty tools should not be used in the work: they can lead to contamination of the glued fragments, which is especially noticeable in the overall picture of the cladding. Even the cleanliness of the hands matters: they will constantly have to be washed, since the adhesive composition gets on them during the finishing process. It is unacceptable for it to get on the tile, this will be noticeable, since not every adhesive can be removed from the surface perfectly.

To finish the ceiling, you will have to buy material with a margin: this will eliminate the lack of panels in case of marriage or improper cutting when fitting.

Panel types

Ceiling panels are classified according to the method of production, type of surface, shape, material of manufacture and size. Thanks to these features, you can visually change the area of space, beat surface irregularities. Today, these panels are made from synthetics (polystyrene), wood, and even metal, although it is rarely used for decoration. The disadvantage of many varieties is low resistance to burning, although the manufacturing technology provides for the impregnation of the material special composition that prevent fire.

Manufacturing Method

According to the type of production, ceiling tiles are divided into 3 varieties:

 • stamped- material created by pressing foam blocks with a thickness of 6-8 mm (rather fragile material with no protective layer and instability to pollution, used due to its low cost);

 • injection- a variety formed by sintering in a mold with further processing at high temperature, having a thickness of 9-14 mm (polystyrene foam category with high relief and pattern clarity, capable of imitating stone, marble, wood, tile and ceramic tiles, which has a category for painting in the assortment);

 • extruded- a category, the creation process of which is associated with the pressure of an extruded polystyrene foam strip under pressure, it has high quality indicators compared to the two previous types of finishes (it is strong, reliable, durable, hygienic and able to restore its original shape if it is deformed, glue and cut it much easier).

Surface type

According to the type of surface, ceiling tiles can be:

 • laminated;
 • mirror;
 • seamless.

Laminated material is distinguished by the presence of a special film on the surface - lamination. This feature makes the finishing panels moisture resistant, durable, resistant to fading. Due to the laminated film, this ceiling tile has a different shade. The mirror variety is a design option: it is mainly a plastic tile, on the surface of which there is a mirror layer. This option, in addition to the square shape, is rectangular. The seamless type of raw materials is different in that no seams are visible during gluing, while the tile can have classic linear borders or curly lines. It is durable, thermally stable, resistant to moisture, practical and paintable.

Shape and dimensions

These criteria are especially important: it depends on the number consumable. The calculation formula is quite simple: measure the length and width of the ceiling, multiply and divide by the number of square meters of material, based on the number of fragments in one package. Usually a factory packed block of 50 x 50 cm consists of 8 blanks. It's basically 2 sq. m.

This parameter is the most demanded, although in addition to it, there are other standards in production, for example:

 • 30 x 30 cm - for small spaces;
 • 16.5 x 100 cm - for lovers of non-standard techniques.

The inconvenience of calculating a rectangular tile is the need for a symmetrical fit of the pattern, otherwise, due to an incorrectly located pattern, the ceiling may look visually skewed. In this case, pasting with a shift makes sense.

Choosing glue

Properly selected glue is the basis of successful work. Often it is he who slows down the process. Some types of adhesives are enough to attach to the ceiling, they quickly set. Others will have to be fixed by pressing the surface for a while. To date, several varieties of tile adhesive have been proposed for ceiling tiles. It can be transparent, white and beige. The structure is also different. Let's consider a few:

"Titanium"

This glue is divided into 2 types: one of them is transparent, sold in bottles, has a specific smell. Its disadvantage is the viscosity of the structure. Application is inconvenient because the adhesive stretches, forming threads, which distracts from work.

This does not stop some masters: they believe that this glue is suitable for work and does not sag if the neighbors from above have a leak or a pipe breaks.

Liquid Nails

This material is sold in the form of a tube and a bottle for a construction gun. Produces the highest quality product trademark"Moment". This adhesive is characterized by excellent adhesion to the surface. It will take a few seconds to stick the tiles. However, it is precisely the fact that it sets instantly that can make it difficult to work: it can be problematic to correct a fragment glued to the surface, because the material has a particularly strong grip.

If a bottle for a gun is used in the work, you will have to work quickly so that at the time of hardening the tile is already on the ceiling. Another nuance is the color of the glue: it is a dirty beige. Such a minus calls into question the use of glue when processing the ceiling with thin fragments that do not involve painting. This glue is expensive, produced in a small volume, so facing the ceiling of a room can cost a lot. It will be difficult to remove it in case of dismantling.

"Quart"

Super white adhesive for ceiling tiles of this brand is available in different volumes in plastic cans. For work, it is optimal to choose a packaging with a volume of 3 kg. The color is similar to the white color of the tile, the consistency resembles sour cream. In work, the glue has proven itself from the best side. The tile applied to the ceiling lies in place, does not move out of it, does not lag behind the surface after it has been pressed down in the places of the applied glue. This glue is convenient in that it can be used to fill the joints, if suddenly there are voids. In terms of color and type of surface, it is similar to the main matte cladding, the processed seams will not be striking, while the surface of the finish will look monolithic.

Surface preparation

Before pasting, you must first prepare the base of the ceiling, otherwise the work risks being short-lived. This is especially true of places where the ceiling was whitewashed with lime. It must be removed from the walls, because the tile will not stick to the whitewashed surface. If for some reason dirt or greasy stains have got on the ceiling, they are cleaned off.

Not only whitewash is removed: it is necessary to cope with the plastered surface.

This also applies to wallpaper, if they pasted over the ceiling. To clean the horizontal plane from them, you can use a conventional spray gun for flowers and house plants. This will reduce the amount of dust when removing the old coating. Tile fits perfectly concrete base, although it is often impossible to reach it during purification. Do not ignore the preparation process before gluing: it is possible that the whitewash or old wallpaper will move away from the ceiling and the tile may sag against the background of others.

If the ceiling is uneven, has significant cracks, they should be covered with putty or gypsum-based rotband. Then it is necessary to prepare the surface for gluing with a deep penetration primer. This mark is indicated directly on the container, thanks to which the composition will provide reliable adhesion. ceiling panel with ceiling surface. You can prime with a roller and a flat brush. At the same time, the roller is used in the main space, with a brush they pass through the corners and protrusions in order to eliminate the excess consumption of liquid (if you use a roller, in the corners, when pressed down, the primer will flow along the walls). You need to process the ceiling of the room with high quality, then you should wait a day until the composition is completely dry.

Installation subtleties

Mounting the ceiling with ceiling tiles is quite exciting and fast, so many people stick with their own hands. However, the work has its own nuances. She does not tolerate hack-work and haste: a loosely connected tile can fall out of the common canvas over time. It is worth considering the features of the material used: plastic tiles (PVC) do not allow pressure to achieve the density of the web, the porous material can be compressed somewhat if necessary for alignment.

Gluing provides different ways of fixing fragments. Each of them depends on the skills of the master. Calibration must be performed before sticking the material. This is especially important if you plan to start work from the center of the room obliquely. This factor is one of the most important when buying a material and taking into account its stock: out of 50 pieces, 8 will definitely not fit in size. This is due to the packaging itself: often the fragments on the sides have smoothed and obtuse corners.

When buying, it is impossible to wrap packages with tape, squeezing them: side seams suffer from this.

The batch of goods also matters: often the blanks differ by 3-4 mm, which complicates the sticker. Taking the highest quality square (rectangle) as a basis, others are equal to it: so pasting will be flawless. Before gluing a new fragment, attach it to the previous one. This will allow you to choose the perfect joint. After fitting, the element is glued to the surface. It is important to constantly check the direction of the pattern. This will avoid marriage.

It is not necessary to apply glue to the ceiling: it is enough that it will be on the tile itself. It is applied pointwise, as the material is quite light. You can apply glue in the corners, in the center, in the center of each face. In general, 5-9 dots with a small amount of glue are sufficient. To make the tile look monolithic against the general background, and the glue does not give it bumpiness, use a rubber roller for rolling wallpaper: this way you can avoid pushing through the blocks and even out the level of the cladding, especially at the crosshairs of the fragments (if there is no large relief).

If, during the work, a fragment with a dirty area is found in the package, which is not enough for gluing in the corner, it should be used as a pattern for especially difficult places (for example, where pipes or protrusions are located). So you can save on marriage and fit the shape of the missing fragment as accurately as possible. If special coloring is planned (for example, one relief element of the pattern), this is done before gluing. In case the entire surface is to be painted, it is better to do this after the finishing cloth has dried.

Sticking schemes

You can glue the tiles beautifully in different ways.

There are several options for gluing, for example:

 • parallel to the walls (along the perimeter);
 • diagonally (obliquely with alternation and intersection);
 • in a checkerboard pattern.

To avoid distortion of the picture, make a center mark. To do this, find the middle of each wall near the ceiling, stick the thread on the adhesive tape and form a crosshair. If you plan to work with tiles diagonally, a crosshair is formed from the corners of the room. The central lamp serves as a reference point.

If it is not located in the center, make an adjustment.

It is necessary to start gluing from the center, where there is a place for a chandelier (it is removed before work). At the same time, markings are made for the location of the lamp in one square, cutting a small hole in its center. This square will be a guideline for the main process. Symmetry will depend on how it is pasted. If it is located parallel to the wall, the gluing of the same name is performed, if the corners of the fragment are turned to the centers of the walls, then a rhombus is pasted.

Sometimes the center consists of 4 squares: in this case, for perfect alignment, they are folded together and a circle is drawn with a compass. This will allow, if it is necessary to replace the fragment, not to remove the chandelier. If the work starts from the corner (parallel method No 2), it is important to consider that there will be cut off fragments along the edges, otherwise the drawing will be skewed. It is unacceptable that there is a whole square on one side of the wall, and only half of it on the opposite side.

In the interior of the kitchen

Together with various options ceiling finishes, which require a lot of investment, time and the involvement of qualified specialists, there is an equally common, and well-proven, method.

In a relatively short time, choosing a tile suitable for the room and preparing the ceiling for work, it is easy to figure out this simple matter. Also in the article you will find information on how to stick products diagonally.

Finishing

Ceiling tile sticker starts with right choice quality polystyrene products.

Choice

So:

 • Geometry square tiles must comply geometric parameters, that is, all angles must be 90 degrees, and the sides, of course, must have equal lengths. Without this, it is impossible to achieve high-quality docking - however, the cracks can be sealed with putty or acrylic sealant, but, we think, no one needs extra dances with a tambourine.
 • The quality of the feedstock and the structure of polystyrene are evaluated, the relief of the product must be evenly clear and even.
 • Homogeneous polystyrene grains of fine fraction, without voids, are an indicator of quality

 • A tile made in violation of technology is characterized by the presence of defects (irregularities, shells, sagging or depressions) on the surface of the relief, as well as rounded or crumpled corners, crumbling edges. Qualitatively, without gaps, it is not possible to lay and join such tiles.
 • The sticker of products with flaws is used to fill in small areas along the walls and in inconspicuous places, if it is possible to cut out the defective part.

Features and types

Modern polystyrene foam tiles are a universal material for finishing the ceiling in different rooms:

 • It is especially popular in the living room, bedroom and office. Here, this design looks very advantageous thanks to visual magnification ceiling height.
 • Styrofoam products are used when finishing the ceiling in the kitchen, however, a protective laminated coating is applied to it.
 • When planning the decoration of a children's room, the material is selected with a special sound-absorbing layer.
 • For the bathroom or toilet, smooth white or slightly corrugated tiles are used.

Such foam products are made in one of three ways that determine its properties.

May be:

 • Pressed foam. For its manufacture, blocks of polystyrene are taken and the necessary parts are obtained by stamping. It differs:
 1. low density;
 2. small weight;
 3. thickness ranging from 6 to 8 millimeters.
 • extruded(cm. ). Pressed from polystyrene strip. In this type, the density is higher, the surface is quite smooth and shiny, it imitates the surface of marble, wood and other material in appearance.
 • Injection. In this case, sintering of raw materials is performed in special molds, without destroying the granules. Its surface acquires beautiful and clear relief patterns, the thickness of the tiles is from 9 to 14 millimeters. It is carried out with straight shapes around the perimeter, and after gluing to the ceiling, the seams are practically invisible.

Calculation and purchase of necessary materials

 • The calculation of the number of tiles for a particular room can be made by dividing the area of the room (length * width) by the area of one product. This manipulation is usually promptly foreseen by the seller, so you can only stock up on the size of the room before buying.
 • The most common ceiling tile size is 50 x50 cm. (4 pieces), or 2 sq.m. (8 pcs.).
 • Given the possibility of manufacturing or installation defects, especially if the ceiling tiles are installed diagonally, depending on the area of the room and the method of installation, you should purchase 5-10% more material.
 • It is preferable to purchase tiles from one batch of production - the batch number, the number of meters and the date of manufacture must be indicated, instructions are attached for this.

Tip: When purchasing a tile, it is logical to purchase a ceiling plinth made of the same material, similar in design, suitable in width and color, in the required quantity.

In the photo - special glue

Ceiling tile sticker also requires the purchase of an optimally suitable adhesive.

How to choose the right glue

Ceiling tiles can be glued to concrete, gypsum, brick, wood, metal, plasterboard and other substrates. produced for facade adhesives, tile adhesive mixtures, liquid nails, mastics, silicone sealants, etc.

Attention. Adhesives containing organic solvents (acetone, gasoline, ethers, etc.) dissolve polystyrene.

Especially for polystyrene, high-tech mounting adhesives (Titan, Moment, etc.) on a polymer basis have been developed. They are well combined with any surfaces of the ceilings, securely hold the tiles.

 • When choosing glue, first of all, you need to focus on the material from which the tile you bought is made. Probably the most universal composition there will be liquid nails glue.
 • The price of polymer adhesives is quite affordable.
 • Ceiling tiles are glued on a dry, clean, even, solid and primed base.

Tool

Before gluing ceiling tiles, you should stock up on everything you need:

 • Chopping cord for marking the surface. It is sold in hardware stores, chalk is also purchased in the kit, which is poured into a container and stains the thread for beating landmarks on any grounds;
 • construction knife cuts tiles perfectly, it is better to have an option with a blade width of 25 mm on hand, it is much tougher and more convenient to use. Get spare blades in the kit, as they become dull during operation;
 • Adjustable elbow- an indispensable tool if diagonal tiling is performed. This device is fixed at any angle, which greatly simplifies the marking of tiles and eliminates errors during the cutting process;
 • Sealant gun. With it, liquid nails are applied, which will be used when gluing. The tool costs a little, but greatly simplifies and speeds up the workflow;
 • Tape measure and pencil used for measuring and marking. You can use a long ruler, but a tape measure is more convenient;
 • Since you will have to work on the ceiling, you need a ladder or table. The height of the device should be comfortable so that you do not rest your head on the surface and do not stand with outstretched arms.

Ceiling preparation

When carrying out repairs in old premises, the ceiling base, using a hard metal spatula, (if it is fragile and peels off). There should be no flaking, loose areas, as well as crumbling seams and potholes.

 • The cleaned ceiling of both the old and the new premises is swept with a broom (vacuum cleaner) and treated with a primer.
 • A dry, primed ceiling is inspected to identify the largest defects (displacement of floor slabs, cracks, potholes, concrete sagging and other pronounced troubles).

 • All irregularities more than 3-5 mm, with the help of liquid mixtures, are leveled (read more). Potholes and smaller sinks are able to hide ceiling tiles.
 • During installation, more careful leveling of the base is required.
 • After the mixtures have hardened, the repaired areas are again subject to priming. Wood, plywood, plasterboard and other ceilings are also subject to soil treatment.
 • The primed ceiling base provides more reliable interaction with any adhesives.

Before sticking tiles to the ceiling, its location is determined.

Ceiling markings

How can you position

In old-style rooms, it is very rare to find a room with regular geometric shapes, so in such rooms it is more rational to use the diagonal gluing method, in which the tile sticker starts from the center of the ceiling or from the installation point of the central chandelier.

How to tile diagonally? Everything is quite simple!

 • The first thing is the center of the room. This point is located at the intersection of two building cords stretched from diagonally opposite angles.

Advice! There are cases when the center of the ceiling and the location of the main chandelier do not match. In this case, you should be guided by the lamp, although exceptions are possible.

 • Next, we determine what we will have in the center - a solid tile or a butt joint. The first option without cutting the tiles is possible only with the chandelier removed.
 • Next, two lines are drawn strictly perpendicular to the walls and to each other, drawn through the center of the ceiling. It is they who will guide us at the beginning of the work.

How to glue diagonally

 • In the installation option from a chandelier, the corners of four tiles are cut off for fasteners and power supply of the lighting fixture. At the next stage of work, this place is covered with a decorative overlay of the chandelier.

How to glue the ceiling tiles correctly - make the cutout so that it is sure to hide under the decorative trim of the chandelier

In fact, the main difference between diagonal installation is the trimming of all extreme elements, while the next option allows you to install whole tiles at least two walls.

Faster and easier installation of plates - parallel to the walls. It is produced from the wall, which is the most visible in the room. This method of laying is practical and convenient in small areas.

Mounting

How to paste

If installation is carried out in winter time, then the tile should lie in room conditions at least two hours.

So:

 • Before sticking tiles on the ceiling, you should carefully read the instructions for using the adhesive composition. Processes for sticking to adhesives from different manufacturers may vary slightly.
 • Some manufacturers of adhesive compositions recommend that within a few minutes after applying the composition to the surface, withstand the glue for partial swelling for a while, and only then combine the parts with the ceiling. The technologies of other adhesive manufacturers do not require this time.
 • Recommended for each individual type of polystyrene tiles, the adhesive composition is applied to the tiles and the ceiling dotted, dotted or completely. Some types of tiles have special areas for applying glue on the mounting side.
 • With the help of a napkin or a foam rubber sponge, the tile with applied glue is pressed tightly along the entire perimeter to the ceiling so that there are no signs of punching on the front surface.
 • Protruding adhesive is removed immediately with a dry and clean cloth.

Sticking sequence

Exactly according to the markup, in the center of the ceiling or the location of the chandelier, the first tile is fixed. Following the markup, subsequent products are mounted tightly to the first plate.

Perfectly inscribed in country style

In order to comply with the technology, during the installation process it is necessary to control the alignment of the sides and monitor compliance with the pattern, if any.

On the mounting side of some types of tiles there is a special marking in the form of arrows. When installing such a tile, the arrows should have the same direction, as in the video.

So:

 • Neighboring, in order to avoid displacement before the polymerization of the glue, it is convenient to temporarily fix them together using masking (paper) tape.
 • The rows of slabs adjacent to the walls are cut in most cases. In such cases, preliminary, with the help of a tape measure, measurements are taken on the ceiling, and transferred to the tile with a pencil. After cutting with a construction knife, the desired fragment is tried on to the designated place, and fixed with glue.
 • At the next stage painting works, at the junction of the ceiling and walls, a plinth is mounted. It is possible to attach the plinth with the same glue on which the ceiling tiles are glued, but it is more efficient to use a special adhesive putty that can hide all the gaps between the plinth and the relief.

Skirting board installation

 • The joints between the plates are filled, if necessary, with white acrylic sealants. The use of silicone sealant is not recommended.

Care is carried out with a vacuum cleaner with a soft nozzle, grease marks are removed with alcohol, other dirt is wiped off with a clerical washing gum. Water ingress on some types of products is undesirable.

Knowing how to stick ceiling tiles, you can quite efficiently do all the work with your own hands. You should first familiarize yourself with the work of professionals using the thematic video.

A beautifully designed ceiling is sure to catch every eye. The general perception of the room as a whole depends on its type. Ceiling tiles are one of the most popular materials for interior decoration, which is able to transform any room, making it unique and interesting. The types of material, the rules for choosing it, and how to properly glue ceiling tiles are described in detail in this article.

Today, manufacturers produce several options for ceiling tiles. According to the manufacturing technology, there are:

 • extruded;

 • injection;
 • stamped.

The surface of ceiling tiles can be laminated, seamless or mirrored. Laminated products are covered with a special film, which gives the tiles increased moisture resistance. It is available in a wide range of colors and does not lose its rich color for a long time. On the front side a special layer is applied, thanks to which it is possible to achieve a visual expansion of the space.

Seamless tiles on the ceiling have smooth edges, thanks to which the joints are invisible. On the back side of the products there is a marking in the form of triangular arrows. They must be directed in the same direction. This must be taken into account before gluing the ceiling tiles.

Extruded tiles are obtained from a painted or film-coated polystyrene strip created by pressing. As a result, a smooth or embossed product without graininess is formed, 2.5-3 mm thick. This is the most reliable, durable and expensive tile. Thanks to the water and dust-repellent coating, the product washes well and is easily restored at the slightest deformation. Having a dense structure, the tile is easy to cut, which creates smooth edges.

Very often, tiles are produced with a surface painted like wood, stone or marble. It can contain different patterns and be of different colors. The material is ideal for bathrooms.

Important! The extruded type of tile cannot be painted.

A distinctive feature of extruded tiles is their appearance. Its edges are slightly bent on the back side down, which allows it to be used for an uneven ceiling, where it will be possible to hide its imperfections. However, when exposed to sunlight for a long time, the tiles turn yellow. The price of a ceiling tile averages 220-270 rubles. for packing.

Budget options for ceiling tiles

Injection tiles, obtained as a result of sintering raw materials of polystyrene composition. After such processing at high temperature, a product with a clearly defined pattern and regular geometric shape is obtained, the thickness of which is 9-14 mm. Using this material, you can make a ceiling without seams. Ceiling tiles of this type are an environmentally friendly, durable, non-combustible material that has good sound and heat insulation characteristics, and is not afraid of moisture.

It is only available in white. The finished surface can be painted. The price of a package is on average 80-150 rubles.

When the main question is, how much does a ceiling tile cost, the most budget option is a pressed product with a thickness of 6-8 mm, the price of which does not exceed 60 rubles. for packing. The tile is made of polystyrene foam blocks by stamping. The material has a loose, porous surface that quickly absorbs dirt that is difficult to remove. Washing such tiles is strongly not recommended. It's better to color it water-based paint. Due to the fact that the product is too brittle and fragile and it is difficult to achieve a smooth edge during cutting, it is recommended to purchase tiles with some margin.

Advantages and disadvantages of ceiling tiles

Styrofoam ceiling boards are suitable for almost all surfaces, including plaster, wood, brick, concrete and even plaster. With the help of this material, you can create a beautiful and aesthetic ceiling cladding, which is able to hide all surface flaws. Depending on the chosen type of product and the option of gluing tiles to the ceiling, you can visually increase the size of the room, reduce the curvature of the walls.

The material has high heat and sound insulation properties, which is especially important for apartments in high-rise buildings. Gluing ceiling tiles is not a time-consuming process and does not require special skills. In case of deformation of one or more products, they can be easily replaced with new ones without repairing the entire ceiling.

Ceiling tiles are easy to care for without the use of special tools. The surface is cleaned with a dry cloth or vacuum cleaner. For a laminated coating, it is possible to carry out wet cleaning using conventional detergents, which will not lead to deformation of the products.

Among the disadvantages of ceiling tiles, it can be distinguished that the material burns out over time under the influence of direct sunlight. Certain types of products may lose their shape when exposed to moisture. Also, when using this facing material, lighting devices should not be placed close to it, which can lead to deformation of the product.

Determination of the amount of material depending on the area of the ceiling

In order to find out the required number of tiles, you should calculate the area of the ceiling. If the room resembles the shape of a rectangle, then it is enough to multiply its width and length, the values of which are previously measured with a tape measure. If the room has a complex non-standard shape, then it is necessary to measure the length of all sides and depict them on the plan. Next, the drawing should be divided into even rectangles or squares. By determining the area of each section, and adding the obtained values, it will be possible to calculate the total area of the ceiling.

Next, you should calculate the area of one product, which is produced mainly standard size 50 × 50 cm. So, the area of one product will be equal to 0.25 m². Now the resulting ceiling area must be divided by the area of one tile and get their total number. However, today manufacturers have begun to produce other sizes of ceiling tiles, such as 40x40, 60x60, 40x70, 30x70 and 30x60 cm.

However, it should be remembered that when gluing products, errors are possible that will lead to deformation, damage or breakage of the tile. It is also worth considering the dimensions of the gaps that form on the ceiling after gluing whole tiles. If half a tile is needed to fill them, then the whole product will fill two gaps. And if the size of the space takes up more than half, then a whole tile is consumed. Therefore, the material should be purchased with some margin of about 10% of the total.

How to glue tiles on the ceiling: product placement options

There are many options for placing ceiling tiles. Photos of beautifully designed ceilings using this material clearly demonstrate this. Here you can create different geometric shapes, combine products using tiles of different colors. However, each option requires precise markup.

Installation of tiles is carried out mainly from the middle of the ceiling. To determine it, you need to draw two diagonal lines. Further, for easy installation of tiles, perpendicular straight lines should be drawn to each side that pass through the center. Such marking is mandatory and universal, regardless of the method of laying the tiles.

Helpful advice! Laying ceiling tiles small room it is better to carry out from the corner, which will allow you to create a continuous surface without increasing material consumption.

The main options for laying the product on the ceiling:

 • classical;
 • diagonal;
 • chess order;
 • snake.

The classic laying of tiles is carried out in rows parallel to the walls, starting from the center. This is ideal for seamless ceiling tiles, which create a complete cladding surface. Also, products can be glued in rows with a shift of half a tile. This will give lightness and airiness to the room.

The second option involves gluing products along diagonal lines, with the help of which the correct tile laying will be monitored. The result is a smooth and beautiful ceiling coating.

For laying tiles in a checkerboard pattern, products of two colors are used, with the help of which the necessary checkerboard effect is created by the alternation method. Start laying tiles from the center of the ceiling, placing the edges of the products parallel to the walls. This option allows you to hide the flaws of the ceiling surface.

For last version you will need a tile of two contrasting shades. The stacking of products starts from the center, where a graphic display of a snake twisted in a spiral is created.

How to glue ceiling tiles?

Before gluing the tiles to the ceiling, it is necessary to prepare the surface for finishing. It must be completely free of old finish. In the presence of depressions, dents, cracks, significant irregularities, defects should be eliminated with putty. After the material has completely dried, it is necessary to prime the surface in order to improve the adhesion of the ceiling and future tiles.

Helpful advice! Before sticking ceiling tiles, leave them for two to three days in a warm and dry place so that excess moisture evaporates from them. Otherwise, products on the ceiling may shrink, which will cause cracks to form.

To complete the work, you will need a clerical knife, a ruler, a pencil, and glue. After the preparatory work, the ceiling is marked with the definition of its center point. All windows and doors in the room should be closed to eliminate the possibility of a draft. Next is the direct installation of products.

Important! Before installing tiles at the location of the chandelier, it is necessary to de-energize the room.

Before gluing the tiles to the ceiling, you should apply a special adhesive. Depending on the selected material, it can be distributed around the perimeter of the product and in the center, or in a thin layer over its entire surface. Particular attention should be paid to the middle and corners of the product. The first tile is attached to the middle of the ceiling and pressed tightly against it. If a chandelier is located here, then a hole for the wires must first be made in the product. All subsequent tiles are laid according to the selected option.

All ceiling tiles should be in close contact with each other, leaving no visible gaps. In the case of an uneven ceiling between products, the formation of cracks is inevitable. In this case, they can be sealed with white acrylic sealant. It is squeezed out into the formed cracks, filling them, and thereby strengthening the tiles on the ceiling. Excess adhesive must be removed immediately.

Helpful advice! If the tile is very soft, it should be pressed with a wooden beam so as not to damage the surface of the product with your fingers.

When it is necessary to cut the tiles at the edge of the ceiling, you should first try on. The product should be cut in such a way as to create a minimum gap between the wall and the tile, which will subsequently be hidden behind the baseboard.

After complete drying of the cladding, you can paint it with water-based paint based on latex or acrylic. For uniform application of the layer, use a roller with a foam surface. At least two coats must be applied. It is recommended to prime the surface before painting.

How to glue ceiling tiles diagonally and rhombus

When laying polystyrene foam ceiling tiles diagonally, you can get an unusual facing coating that will not only add originality to the interior, but also skillfully allow you to hide the slight curvature of the walls.

Before sticking the tiles on the ceiling, a universal marking of the surface is performed. The first tile is glued in the center so that its corners are located at 45 degrees. relative to the walls of the room and crossed the diagonals of the ceiling. Further, the next tile is closely glued to each of the four sides. Then, all subsequent products are carefully joined until the ceiling is completely filled.

The extreme rows are laid last, when the main central part of the surface is pasted over.

Before you glue the ceiling tiles with a rhombus, you should familiarize yourself with the features of this finishing technology. First of all, the center of the ceiling is determined and its marking is performed. The first tile should be glued so that one of its corners touches the center, and two adjacent sides coincide with the diagonal lines. The second tile is located symmetrically on the other side of the center. The third and fourth fit into places between the first two, thereby forming an even rhombus. From it, the rest of the tiles are laid, moving to the edges of the ceiling. Here you should carefully join the products to prevent visible seams.

This method is ideal for an expanded polystyrene ceiling with a pronounced pattern, which gives free rein to the embodiment of design fantasy. However, it should be borne in mind that in order to create a perfect pattern on the ceiling, material consumption increases significantly.

What to glue the ceiling tiles on?

When the important question arises of how to glue ceiling tiles, it is worth considering all the available compositions, evaluating their distinctive features. Here it is necessary to take into account heat resistance, stickiness, setting and drying time.

The water-based adhesive is durable, reliable and eco-friendly material. It contains natural ingredients such as bone glue and cellulose. However, this is what contributes to the growth of bacteria under the product. Therefore, the surface of the ceiling before laying tiles using this composition must be treated with a special antibacterial agent. The disadvantage of the glue is that it dries for a long time and has little adhesion compared to synthetic compounds.

Solvent based ceiling tile adhesive is made from volatile liquids where various polymers dissolve. It dries quickly, which makes it difficult to install products.

Hot melt adhesive is formulated exclusively with thermoplastic polymers, making it the best polyurethane based material. It has high adhesion. However, it must be warmed up before use. certain temperature, which creates difficulties for a beginner who is tiling for the first time.

Glue "liquid nails", the instruction of which suggests its use for polystyrene foam ceiling tiles, is the best option for uneven coatings. The composition creates a strong and reliable connection. The disadvantage of the composition is its high price and the need to purchase a special tool.

When the question arises, how to glue the tiles to ensure maximum term operation of the facing surface, preference should be given to the adhesive compound. It is made on the basis of epoxy or polyester resins. It is very easy to use and creates maximum adhesion. However, it is worth considering that the glue sets quickly, so it is recommended to cook it in small portions. The main disadvantage of this composition is the high cost.

Ceiling tile care

In order for the ceiling to always have an attractive appearance, it is enough not only to decorate it beautifully, but also to maintain the coating in good condition. Ceiling tiles do not require special care. It is enough just to regularly clean it from the accumulated dust. This will extend the life of the material and maintain the original appearance of the ceiling for a long period.

To keep the tiles looking well-groomed, it is necessary to dry-clean them once a month with a fluffy brush or vacuum cleaner. Wet cleaning for laminated surfaces should be performed at least once every two months. Here you can use the usual detergents, which do not contain caustic components that can damage the surface of products.

Helpful advice! Small dirt can be easily removed from the tile with a regular eraser or alcohol.

If traces of sudden flooding by neighbors appear on the ceiling, they should be eliminated immediately. Otherwise, after the tiles have dried, rust spots will remain on the surface that cannot be removed.

Tiles with a pronounced textured pattern should be cleaned with a soft sponge dipped in a cleaning solution. After wet cleaning, it is necessary to wipe the tiles dry using paper towels, as the remaining wet stains will spoil the appearance of the ceiling.

Gluing tiles to the ceiling is an easy enough task that even a beginner can easily handle. The main task is a thorough cleaning of the surface, the correct marking of the ceiling, the choice quality glue and finishing material. Further, having studied the question of how to properly glue tiles on the ceiling, you can create a unique surface that will harmoniously fit into the overall design of the room.
