How to glue paper wallpaper end-to-end or overlap. How to glue paper wallpaper How to glue cheap paper wallpaper correctly

For more than 150 years, Russia has been producing wallpaper from paper. During this time we fell in love with them for created comfort and warmth in our homes. Previously, this coating was considered a sign of wealth, produced in small quantities, since there was only one manufacturing method - manual labor. Now rolls are produced in unprecedented quantities, every year complicating the structure and improving quality, and their choice is available to everyone. Range paper wallpaper very wide: this is children's wallpaper, for the hall, for the kitchen - you can pick up a picture in every room.

The advantages of paper wallpaper are environmental safety, a wide variety of colors and an affordable price. They are well suited for both home and garden. You can find drawings with rhombuses, flowers, etc. Paper wallpapers are associated with childhood, with comfort in the grandmother's house.

Consumers want more and more variety, the same type of drawings get bored. Often, in innovative production, only a paper base is used, and high-tech compounds are applied on top, and a the new kind wallpaper. Or vice versa, they take a base of more durable materials, and put a paper layer on top.

Paper covers are divided into two types.

  • Single-layer, in their composition one layer of paper. They are similar in thickness to tissue paper. Single-layer paper wallpapers are the cheapest, very light in weight, and do not differ in strength. They are easily torn when exposed to moisture, so in the process of gluing it is better to apply glue only to the wall. Such wallpapers are always smooth to the touch, they are called "simplex".
  • Multilayer, called "duplex". In their production, layers of paper are glued together to increase strength. Ordinary two-layer wallpaper is rarely produced only from paper, more often new structures are achieved. For example, with this technology, a water-repellent top layer is applied, and water-resistant surfaces are obtained. A relief pattern is obtained by gluing several layers and immediately, without waiting for drying, any pattern is squeezed out with a relief roller. Then they are painted over, from simple lines to painted patterns. This is how duplex embossed wallpapers are obtained. Such coatings are not at all smooth to the touch, more durable, have an excellent appearance and serve for years.
  • Duplex embossed
    In the production of multi-layer wallpapers, compressed textile and cellulose fibers can be used as a base, and a paper layer can be applied on top. Then they get non-woven paper wallpapers, which are so loved by housewives for their incredible strength and soft texture.

    Such wallpapers are subdivided into a restoration look (for painting) or with a finished pattern and color of the manufacturer. Due to their strong structure, they can withstand repeated painting. Often used in design ideas to indicate the transition of zones, applying a horizontal pattern to visually stretch the space of the room.

    How to paste wallpaper

    If you decide to update your home walls and choose paper wallpaper, the wide range of colors and quality will pleasantly surprise your customers. Belarusian manufacturers offer a wide choice. In order to avoid unforeseen difficulties during the repair process, we suggest that you study the recommendations below, stage by stage.

    Any repair should begin with the release of space. Furniture is moved or taken out, paintings and photographs hanging on the walls are moved away, creeping coverings on the floor are removed (or covered with a strong plastic film).

    Next comes the preparation of the walls themselves. To make it easier to remove old paper wallpaper, there are a few tricks.

    Alternative ways remove wallpaper
    stock up warm water, sponge and sharp spatula 8-10 cm.

    Before starting work, we will de-energize the room, and preferably the whole apartment. Wet the walls thoroughly with a sponge and warm water. We give it a little soak and begin to remove the wallpaper from the top edge, we hook the difficult places with a spatula. If the halos of old coatings remain on the wall, we will moisten them a couple more times.

    If before that they were glued, then to remove them, you first need to make holes, otherwise moisture will not get inside. To do this, the easiest way is to use a needle roller.

    If you iron the wallpaper with the sender, they will soften and be removed much easier.

    To no avail? Then we rub the walls with a metal brush, so even small residues will be removed.

    Calculation and purchase

    We measure the walls and calculate the number of rolls. It is important to consider the following: if paper covers with a large sweeping pattern are chosen, then a lot will be spent on cutting. In order not to glue the last corner with residues with joints, the purchase is made with a margin.

    For a convenient calculation, you can use this plate:

    The quality of paper wallpapers depends on their density:

    • thin types weigh less than 110 g / m²;
    • medium quality rolls weigh 110-140 g/m²;
    • heavy dense models can weigh more than 140 g/m².

    Buy a couple more rolls of wallpaper. So it will be possible to update defective places if they move away or the child paints them. If you need to buy additional rolls later, most likely, the batch on them will be different and the color can be very different.

    Wall preparation

    Walls before gluing must be properly prepared. We look where there are strongly protruding bumps, knock them down. If the repair is not large-scale and major alignment is not included in the plans, then wallpaper with a chaotic pattern, but long straight lines will give out all the secrets.

    If the irregularities are not too large, leveling with ordinary putty is sufficient. Do not forget to treat the walls before and after puttying with a primer, so the finish will be stronger. The putty layer should be thin, if necessary, it is applied in several layers (after the previous one has dried). We also remind you about sanding putty. The finish layer is especially carefully polished.

    Large irregularities cannot be leveled with putty, it will simply crack after drying. To do this, use alabaster or gypsum-based plasters. To get a perfectly smooth surface, leveling is done by sheathing or gluing drywall to the walls. If drywall is not suitable, the walls can be leveled with plaster on beacons. However, this option is very labor intensive.

    Wallpapering

    It remains only to stick the finish coat. It is better to place wallpaper on the ceiling along the longitudinal line from the entrance, starting from the edge. Wallpaper is applied to the walls, first of all, where the entire strip will lie, and then pasted over near the window and other places with slopes, shelves, and the like. The gluing sequence is schematically shown in the photo:

    Before gluing and after 3 days, drafts should not be allowed in the room, otherwise all the wallpaper will move away from the walls. Therefore, at this time, do not ventilate the premises, do not open windows and vents.

    Sticking paper wallpaper is done as follows.

    When smoothing, the joints are very easy to damage. To avoid this, a thin rag or napkin is placed under the roller. They will also absorb excess adhesive protruding.

    In more detail, all the details are shown in this video:

    If paper wallpapers for painting are chosen for repair, they are painted only after the glued surface has dried permanently. In case of unsuccessful experiments with the pattern, they can be repainted many times.

    Wallpapering with applied glue

    Recently, types of wallpaper have appeared with dry glue already applied to reverse side. They can be recognized by the inscription "Prepasted" on the package. The process of gluing them is slightly different from the usual.

    Paper wallpapers are best suited for wall decoration in a bedroom or children's room due to their environmental friendliness. They have poor resistance to dirt, but are very cheap, so changing them after a couple of years is not a problem.

It would seem that it could be easier than sticking paper wallpaper. But even here there are subtleties and nuances. Today we will tell you how to choose the right wallpaper, prepare the surface and what you need to consider.

Features of paper wallpaper

Despite the popularity of non-woven, vinyl and liquid counterparts, paper wallpapers remain quite in demand. Relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly, they also have a large assortment - so everyone can choose exactly what they need.

Single layer. The simplest and inexpensive option, but also the least quality. Such wallpapers are only suitable for a rented apartment or as a solution for the first time.

Two-layer (duplex). Due to the second paper layer, the wallpaper gets wet less when glued, it better hides small wall irregularities, they are more durable and last longer.

Embossed. There are also two-layer wallpapers, but with a structural pattern that is repeated with paint - due to this, the wallpaper looks more voluminous, more interesting and more expensive than usual.

Moisture resistant. Due to impregnation special composition such wallpapers do not get wet when glued, and they can also be wiped with a damp cloth.

Structural. Another version of two-layer wallpaper, but with wood shavings in the middle, due to which a beautiful three-dimensional relief is created.

Foamed. As structural, only instead of wood chips between the layers they have an acrylic polymer, which gives the wallpaper strength.

For painting. Two-layer wallpaper - embossed or structured, which can be painted. True, after the second time, the wallpaper loses its presentation.

Advantages and disadvantages

In addition to the price and environmental friendliness, paper wallpapers are attractive because they are relatively easy to glue. Even a beginner can handle this task if they follow the instructions.

Paper freely passes moisture and thus allows it to go into the wall - which means that mushrooms and mold will not start behind such wallpaper. However, in rooms with high humidity, paper wallpapers cannot be used for obvious reasons.

But the next time you make repairs, you can easily remove the paper wallpaper. As a rule, they move well away from the walls just like that. And if difficulties arise, it is enough to wet them and scrape them off with a spatula.

Paper wallpapers serve no more than ten years. At the same time, it is better not to stick them in a room with windows on the sunny side, otherwise they will quickly burn out and lose their original appearance.

In addition, they cannot be cleaned or washed - the paper will get wet, rolled up or even torn - in any case it will not look the same. The exception is moisture-resistant wallpaper, but even they should not be rubbed with a rag with excessive enthusiasm.

Training

Before you glue paper wallpaper, it is important to prepare the walls. First you need to get rid of the old wallpaper. If they do not go away just like that, they need to be wetted and after a while removed with a spatula.

Some add to water ammonia or soda, and then iron the wallpaper with a hot iron through gauze or a cloth soaked in this solution. It is important to remove all irregularities and roughness, because paper wallpapers will not be able to hide these imperfections.

Therefore, after you remove the old wallpaper, you need to cover up all the cracks with putty, then sand them sandpaper and the last step is to prime the walls.

Before sticking, turn off the electricity, and remove the covers from the switches and sockets. When you stick the strip, just leave a cross cut in their place, then remove all unnecessary and put the covers in place.

To make the walls look perfect, it is better to remove the skirting boards and mount them back after you have pasted all the wallpaper - or replace them with new ones.

How to glue paper wallpaper

It is very important to choose the right glue for the wallpaper. For paper, universal glue, CMC or PVA is suitable. Read the details in our article.

You will need: paper knife, simple pencil, tape measure, brush and glue container, roller, damp sponge (to remove excess glue), dry cloth.

1. Roll out the roll with the wrong side up and mark the length - the height of the room plus 10 cm. If there is no pattern on the wallpaper, cut several strips at once. If there is a drawing, then the wallpaper must be cut so that the details match.

2. First, mark the surface of the walls: starting from the window, mark the width of the strip and draw a straight vertical line - for this you can use a plumb line with a cord or a laser level.

3. Dilute the glue exactly as written in the instructions. Apply it evenly on the strip, do not forget about the edges.

Useful advice. If you have a two-layer wallpaper, then fold the sheet inward on both sides and leave for 5 minutes to soak it. If the wallpaper is single-layer, then go to the next step - the strip will be saturated while you carry it to the wall.

4. Start gluing the wallpaper in the same way as you marked out the wall - from the window. If the wallpaper is patterned, remember to make sure it matches.

5. With a dry, clean piece of fabric, press the strip from the middle to the edges, from top to bottom. Cut off the excess with the same paper knife.

6. Iron the joints with a roller - so they will be less noticeable.

After finishing work, leave the windows closed for a day: the wallpaper should dry evenly at the same temperature. For the same reason, you should not use a fan to dry the wallpaper faster - it will only spoil all your efforts.

Wall murals began to win more and more fans among apartment owners. The idea of using them is not new, but modern technologies and design ideas allow you to create with this material unique, practical and beautiful interiors. A good result depends not only on right choice material, images on it. The most important thing is to avoid mistakes when gluing photo wallpapers on the wall. Let's take a closer look at how to glue photo wallpapers on paper basis with a vinyl covering, and also usual paper photowall-paper.

A feature of photo wallpapers is their division into small fragments, which can be simply glued to the wall separately, creating a common image.

Features of working with paper-based photo wallpapers

Wall murals can only be made of paper or have a paper backing on which a vinyl layer is applied.

  • The paper material can be single-layer or more durable two-layer, have different densities, but in any case requires very delicate handling.
  • It is much easier to work with paper-based vinyl wallpapers, since their outer layer is much stronger than paper.

Despite major differences performance characteristics paper wallpapers and vinyl sheets on a paper backing, the principle of their gluing is the same.

Preparatory activities

Preparatory work before sticking paper-based photo wallpapers on the wall will include the following steps:

  • Preparation of materials and tools. It is important to prepare everything at once necessary tools and materials. You will have to work at a fairly fast pace, there will be no time to run for the missing components.

Important! For photo wallpapers of any type, a special adhesive composition is used, which comes with finishing material, or ordinary wallpaper glue, corresponding to their type and density.

  • Wall surface preparation. Before sticking photo wallpapers on the wall, it is necessary to carefully level the surface. To do this, you will need (wallpaper, paint, etc.), if necessary, level the walls with plaster, and then putty, apply a primer. If the wall was originally perfectly flat, it just needs to be cleaned of dirt and dust, and then primed.

If the wallpaper will be glued to a painted wall, the paint on which holds very well, it can not be removed. The surface is washed with detergent, a very smooth base to improve adhesion is processed with sandpaper.

  • Applying markup. The evenness of the final image on the wall will depend on this stage. Marking is applied using a level or plumb line. It is necessary to apply so many lines to get a markup for attaching each piece of wallpaper with a photo image.

Gluing methods

Wallpaper can be glued in two ways:

  1. Overlap, when the edge of one piece is pasted over the edge of the previous piece. This is possible due to the presence of a technological strip on the edges of the fragments, which is available on all types of wallpaper.
  2. Butt to butt, when this strip is simply cut off.

We glue the wallpaper correctly

  • In order to correctly carry out the overlapping of photo wallpapers, first lay them out on the floor and check the location of the technological strips. If they are on all sides of the fragments, it is necessary to cut off those stripes that are located on the left. It is most convenient to stick fragments along the right edge.
  • With a wide brush, glue is applied to the wall. If the paper for photo wallpaper is thick enough, the adhesive composition should be applied to the fragments in turn, soaking them for 2-3 minutes (depending on the manufacturer's recommendations). Thin photo wallpapers should be glued to the wall immediately after applying the glue, otherwise they will get wet and spread.

Important! For thin wallpapers, the glue should be more liquid than for thick and dense ones.

  • The first fragment is applied to the wall, starting from the top, then leveled along the vertical markings. Bubbles and wrinkles are expelled from under the paper with gentle movements of the roller from the center to the edges of the fragment. When ironing the wallpaper with a roller or spatula, excess glue is squeezed out from under them and then erased with a soft sponge.

It is very important that the first part of the photo wallpaper is glued perfectly evenly, since the first fragments will serve as a guide for placing all other parts of the image.

If the fragments are overlapped, care must be taken to ensure that the technological strip does not show through at the joints. At the same time, it is important to carefully combine the pattern at the junction of the edges of the photo wallpaper, since after drying such a defect can no longer be corrected. First of all, the image is combined, and only after that the fragment is smoothed. It is necessary to act very carefully, but at the same time quickly enough so that the fragment does not have time to get wet from the glue.

While fragments of a drawing made on paper dry out, bumps form again on their surface, and the image is slightly deformed - this natural process, to be frightened and try to fix something at this stage is not worth it. If the photo wallpapers on the wall were glued correctly, then their surface will level out again after complete drying, and the pattern will take on the correct shape.

Take out the furniture and cover with a film those items that cannot be removed. Remove shelves and decorations, sockets and switches from the walls, as well as, if possible, door trims and skirting boards.

Wallpapering is a wet job. Therefore, be sure to turn off the electricity.

If this cannot be done in only one room, insulate the ends of the wires and close them with plugs.

For a dark room, you can make temporary lighting. For example, stretch extension cords from another room and put desktop ones.

If the floors are finished with a material that is afraid of moisture, cover them with plastic wrap.

How to remove old wallpaper

If you stick new wallpaper on the old one, the result is unlikely to suit you. Upper layer old paper wallpaper may peel off after contact with water-based glue, and when everything dries, a bubble will probably form in this place. And if there is a convex pattern on the previous wallpaper, then the new coating will turn out to be uneven.

In addition, due to poor ventilation of the walls under the wallpaper, it can form.

You can remove the old paper coating with a spatula. Pry off the wallpaper with them, pull the bent part and tear it off the walls.

To facilitate the process, soften the glue that holds the old wallpaper. To do this, you will need a container of water, a scraper and a sponge. Dampen the canvases with water using a roller or spray them with a spray bottle. Scrape off the wallpaper with a scraper and wash off the residue with a wet sponge.

Anton Toskuev, head of the construction department of the service of ready repair solutions "Tnomer"

For greater efficiency, you can dissolve a little in water. It will definitely help if there are wallpapers on the walls that could not be removed with ordinary water.

Thus, you can easily and fairly quickly remove paper wallpapers. But on non-woven or vinyl, you must first walk with a needle roller in order to violate the integrity of the cover.

Sometimes the wallpaper is treated with hot steam, carried out on them with a spiked roller, and only then moistened. Through the holes, water will penetrate better.

If water does not help, it can be replaced by special means to remove wallpaper. Such compositions dissolve the adhesive.

How to remove paint

On the smooth surface wallpaper will not last long, so the paint layer must be disposed of. You can clean it off with the same spatula, but it will take a lot of time.

You can use a puncher with a wide spatula or a grinder with a grinding nozzle. Please note that there will be a lot of dust in the process. So don't forget to wear a mask.

There are also special solutions designed to remove paint. They are applied to the surface with a roller or a wide brush, moving in one direction. After the time indicated on the package, the paint will soften, and then it will be much easier to remove it.

Keep in mind that such products are very toxic and disappear for a long time. It is necessary to work with gloves, goggles and a respirator and with open windows.

A building hair dryer can also come to the rescue. Under its influence, the paint melts and is easily removed with a scraper or spatula. In this case, you can’t do without a respirator either: there will be a pungent smell in the room.

This video shows the process of removing paint with a building dryer:

How to prepare the walls

After getting rid of the old finishing coatings, the walls must be primed. This will prevent the appearance of mold and prevent the putty and new wallpaper from falling off.

The primer must be applied from the bottom up. It is most convenient to do this with a roller, and in the corners with a brush.

Then you need to wait until the liquid dries. It takes about 10-15 hours, but exact time must be indicated on the packaging.

After small irregularities, holes or chips on the walls are hidden with a layer of putty. It is applied with a wide spatula and leveled with even pressure.

The drying time of the putty is also indicated on the packaging.

After the putty has dried, level the surface of the walls with a grater with an abrasive mesh fixed on it. Then clean the walls with a brush and a damp cloth to remove any dust that has formed.

Yulia Soldatova, expert of the decor department of the company " Leroy Merlin»

After that, the walls need to be treated again with a regular shop primer.

You can also use a weak solution of wallpaper paste: about 300 g per 10-12 liters of water. A primer made of PVA construction glue will cost much less: it is enough to dilute 2 cups in a 10-liter bucket of water. These methods are effective, but they will not protect the walls from the reproduction of microorganisms, since the adhesive does not have antiseptic properties.

After the final coat of primer has dried, wallpaper can be glued.

How to measure and cut wallpaper

If the wallpaper does not require matching the pattern, you can simply measure the height of the wall with a tape measure and cut off the required amount from the wallpaper rolled out on the floor. To make the strip even, the wallpaper is folded in half and cut along the fold.

If the walls in the apartment are not very even, you will have to measure the length of each strip.

If the wallpaper needs to be customized according to the pattern, you will have to act a little differently. It is necessary to cut the strips from two rolls at once. Wallpaper consumption in this case will be less than if you customize the pattern using only one roll.

First, cut one strip, lay it face up on the floor, roll out the second roll and attach it to the strip so that the pattern matches. After that, you can cut a new strip.

Lifehacker spoke in great detail about the calculation of the required number of wallpapers in this article:

And yes, don't throw away the scraps. They can be used near windows or above a door.

Wallpaper should be glued in a circle, that is, one strip after another. The starting point of pasting is actually not so important. However, for many, the usual starting point is the edge of the window.

First, the front page needs a level reference point, and windows, especially in older houses, are often flatter than corners or doorways.

Secondly, a few decades ago, most often used paper wallpaper, which is glued with an overlap. And if the light falls from the side of the window, during the day the seams are less conspicuous.

thewalls.ru

But if the wallpaper strips are glued back to back, then you can start from the door or corner.

Wallpaper with a pattern is better to start gluing in an inconspicuous place. For example, where it will stand. The fact is that the space between the first and penultimate bands can be quite narrow. Because of this, the last stripe may not match the drawing with the first.

It is very important to glue the first strip evenly.

Via building level or a plumb line, draw a strictly vertical line on the wall. It will serve as a beacon to which you should navigate when gluing. This will avoid distortion.

How to stick stripes

Be sure to close all windows and doors tightly before wallpapering. If there is a draft in the room, the wallpaper will simply fall off the walls.

On the inserts in the rolls it is written where the glue is applied: on the wallpaper or directly on the wall. In addition, the time of impregnation of the canvas with glue should be indicated there. In this article, Lifehacker explained what the signs on the roll mean:

And on the packaging with glue should be indicated how to properly dilute it.

It is good if the adhesive contains substances that prevent the appearance of mold. In addition, the adhesive must be environmentally friendly.

Anton Toskuev, head of the construction department of the service of ready repair solutions "Tnomer"

If glue is applied to the wallpaper, then for the best impregnation fold the ends of the strip to the middle with glue inside, and then a few more times, without pressing the folds. Do not overexpose, consider the time indicated in the instructions.

Then attach the wallpaper to the line drawn on the wall. The canvas is glued from top to bottom, while a few centimeters must be brought to the ceiling and floor or baseboard.

Smooth the wallpaper with a roller or dry brush from the middle to the edges and from top to bottom.

There should be no air bubbles between the wall and the canvas. If they do appear, pierce them with a needle and gently smooth the surface.

Cut off excess wallpaper from the top and bottom. To do this, press them well against the edges so that a fold is formed, which will serve as a cutting line. You can also press the wallpaper with a spatula and cut off the excess with a clerical knife.

The following strips are glued according to the same principle, only the edge of the previous canvas will serve as a guide.

Please note that thin paper wallpapers are glued slightly overlapped, and wallpapers made of denser materials are butted.

The joints between the strips need to be ironed with a small rubber roller. Excess adhesive can be removed with a soft damp sponge.

How to glue wallpaper in inner corners

Glue the first strip, leading it around the corner by 1–2 cm. In this case, it must first be cut to the required width. Glue the next strip straight from the corner, overlapping.

If the wallpaper is thick, then a double strip of wallpaper will be visible. In this case, firmly press the wallpaper with a spatula in the place where the canvases are glued to each other, and draw a line with a clerical knife. Then remove the two narrow strips left over from both strips and smooth the seam.

How to glue wallpaper in outer corners

The technique is almost the same as the previous one. The first strip should be led around the corner by a few centimeters, and the second should be glued with an overlap.

Then attach a ruler to the corner and run a clerical knife so as to cut off the edges of both strips. Remove excess parts and tighten the canvases if necessary. Iron the seam between the stripes with a roller.

How to glue wallpaper behind pipes

Start gluing the canvas, and make an incision at the beginning of the pipe. Having led the strip behind the pipe, cut off excess wallpaper around it and level the canvas.

Here are the detailed instructions:

Mark their edges on the canvas with four diagonal lines. Then carefully cut out the window in the right place and smooth the wallpaper with a roller.

How to fix defects after gluing

Directly in the process of work, until the glue has dried, the strips can be slightly pulled towards each other right on the wall. After that, it can no longer be repeated. Therefore, be extremely careful.

Defects in the form of air bubbles that appear on the wallpaper after drying can be corrected.

To do this, draw glue into the syringe, pierce the bubble and inject a little glue from top to bottom. Then smooth the surface with a roller or cloth.

If the edges of the wallpaper are lagging behind, they can be glued either with a brush or using the same syringe with glue. Flatten the canvas and, for reliability, press with a dry cloth for a few minutes.

If a wide gap has formed between the strips of wallpaper, cut out a strip of the required thickness from the remnants of the wallpaper and glue it end-to-end at the gap.

If the gap is very narrow, you can dip the edge of the spatula or ruler into the paint of the same color as the wallpaper, and paint over the gap. You can also use an ordinary felt-tip pen for these purposes.

Do not forget that after pasting the room, it cannot be ventilated until the wallpaper is dry.

As a rule, paper wallpapers dry for at least 12 hours, non-woven - about a day, and vinyl - about two days. The time may increase if indoors high humidity and low temperature. To check for sure, touch the pasted walls with your hand: they must be dry.

Specialization: facade finishing, interior decoration, construction of dachas, garages. The experience of an amateur gardener and horticulturist. He also has experience repairing cars and motorcycles. Hobbies: playing the guitar and much more, for which there is not enough time :)

Many people have experienced sticking paper wallpapers, but few people glue them correctly. The fact is that this procedure contains quite a lot of small nuances. Therefore, I want to tell you in detail how to glue paper wallpaper correctly.

Gluing process

Pasting paper wallpaper includes several stages:

Preparation of materials

First of all, you need to choose the right wallpaper paste. It must be said that in Soviet times paper trellises were often glued with PVA glue. On the one hand, the adhesive ensures high-quality adhesion of the material to the walls. However, when removing canvases glued in this way, some problems usually arise.

In addition, PVA slips worse and sets quickly, which somewhat complicates the gluing process. Therefore, I will definitely say that wallpaper glue is better than PVA.

The only thing to keep in mind is that there are many different wallpaper adhesives. Therefore, when buying, make sure that the composition is intended specifically for paper sheets. Of course, paper tapestries will also adhere perfectly to glue intended, for example, for vinyl wallpaper, but the price of the latter is much higher.

In addition to glue, you will also need the following inventory:

  • clean bucket;
  • Acrylic pigmented primer;
  • Paint roller;
  • rubber roller;
  • Soft spatula;
  • Paint brush;
  • Building level;
  • Roulette and pencil;
  • Sharp knife.

Surface preparation

Since paper wallpapers are thin, the base needs high-quality preparation. I must say that improper wall preparation is the most common mistake when gluing paper tapestries.

The instructions for preparing the base look like this:

Illustrations Actions

Removal of old coating. Often, beginners glue paper wallpapers on paper canvases. But, such a decision is a violation of technology.

Often, after such gluing, paper wallpapers are peeled off along with old canvases. Therefore, take the time and effort to remove the old coating, and prepare the base as expected.

After removing the old coating, be sure to wash the walls to remove adhesive residue and all sorts of dirt.

Padding:
  • Dry the walls;
  • Treat the surface with a pigmented primer, which will not only improve adhesion between materials and strengthen the base surface, but also provide it with an almost perfect white color;
  • For best results, apply a second coat of primer after the surface has dried.

To get rid of old wallpaper, pre-soak it with water.

I must say that in case the base is uneven, it is necessary not only to prime the surface, but also to putty at least the starting putty. Otherwise, all the irregularities under the paper sheets will be clearly visible. The wall puttying technology has been repeatedly described on the pages of our portal, so I will not repeat it.

Preparing wallpaper and glue

Before gluing paper wallpaper, you need to prepare the materials by doing the following:

Illustrations Actions

Coating preparation:
  • Measure the height of the room;
  • Cut the canvases according to the height of the room, the only thing if the tapestries have a pattern, add a pattern step, which will allow you to adjust the strips relative to each other;
  • If you are going to glue photo wallpapers, first lay them out on the floor and number them.

    Do not use scissors to cut the canvases, as the cut edges will turn out uneven. Better use a sharp knife.

Applying markup. To align the first canvas when gluing, draw a vertical line with a plumb line or level.

Since the first strip should be glued from the corner with a slight twist, the line should be located from the corner at a distance equal to the width of the canvas minus 5 cm.

Glue preparation:
  • Pour water at room temperature into a clean bucket;
  • Swirl the water so that a funnel forms;
  • Gradually pour glue into the funnel and mix until a homogeneous jelly-like mass is formed;
  • Leave the glue on for 15 minutes and then stir again.

Sticking

Now that everything preparatory stages behind, consider how to properly glue paper wallpaper . The work is carried out as follows:

Illustrations Actions

Glue processing:
  • Apply glue to the canvas with a wide brush in a uniform thin layer. A common mistake newbies make is applying too much a large number glue or its uneven distribution (most often the edges are poorly smeared);
  • To glue the wallpaper to one person, you should fold the canvas with an accordion, with the back side out, so as not to stain front side glue.
Bonding:
  • Start gluing the strip from top to bottom, while aligning the edge along the intended line;
  • Using a rubber roller, soft spatula or rag, smooth the canvas from the center to the edges to squeeze out air bubbles and excess glue;
  • Using a soft spatula, push the corner so that the canvas fits snugly against the wall, and does not hang in the air;
  • If the corner is uneven, make a few cuts in the canvas so that it lies flat and without wrinkles;
  • Align the second canvas end-to-end with the first and smooth it on the wall in the same way;
  • Paint the entire wall in this manner.

Pruning:
  • Cut off the excess canvases from above and below with a sharp knife, as shown in the photo;
  • Cut holes for sockets and switches. They do not have to be perfectly even, as they will later be hidden under decorative overlays.

This completes the wall covering. Ceilings are glued according to the same principle, with the only difference being that the work is done in a horizontal plane.

Push the joints with a narrow roller

  • Immediately remove the front side from the adhesive. If glue gets on the front surface, immediately wipe it off with a damp cloth or sponge;
  • Give the canvases time to soak up the glue.. Ordinary thin tapestries can be glued immediately after applying glue to them. If the wallpaper is dense, for example, the so-called American, after applying glue to them, you need to wait 10-20 minutes until the glue is absorbed;
  • Do not ventilate the room. Until the glue dries, exclude any drafts in the room.

By following these recommendations, you can avoid a number of problems that beginners often face when wallpapering.
