How to turn on WiFi on laptops. How to turn on WiFi on a laptop yourself: a detailed guide

  • 21.10.2019

It's hard to imagine today modern apartment or even more so an office that is not equipped with an appropriate set of office equipment: computers, laptops, tablets, mobile phones. And where all these devices are available, there should naturally be the Internet. He firmly entered our lives, taking one of the most prominent places there. On the Internet, we study, work, have fun, relax, communicate. Therefore, comfortable access to the World Wide Web for yourself and your loved ones is a problem that sooner or later every person has to solve. Fortunately, now we have a reliable assistant that allows us to implement the most effective and simple solution to this issue without any special additional intellectual and financial costs. We are talking, of course, about Wi-Fi technology.

But in order to use the "air" Internet, you need to know where to find and how to turn on Wi-Fi on your computer. We have tried to answer these questions in this article.

What is wifi?

Wireless Internet technology has become part of our everyday life. We habitually identify Wi-Fi with convenient, reliable and fast Internet access, which we encounter at home, at work, in public places - at airports, cafes, shopping centers.

Answer the question "what is Wi-Fi?" the easiest way is this: it is a network protocol, with the participation of which communication is carried out between the “access point” and the “client”, or the “access point” and several “clients”, packet data is exchanged on the local network or via the World Wide Web.

Currently, the abbreviation Wi-Fi does not mean anything and is not officially deciphered in any way, however, when creating this protocol, the developers “gave it a name” by analogy with Hi-Fi (High Accuracy). It stood for "Wireless Fidelity" - wireless precision.

Benefits of using

Of course, the “air” Internet is not an ideal technology. Several examples can be given at once of what difficulties may arise when using it. One of the most widely known is the so-called "noisy" connection. In the range used by this protocol, many household appliances emit (for example, microwave ovens), alternative connection devices work (for example, Bluetooth). Interference can also create walls and ceilings. All this negatively affects the speed and quality of access.

However, good points from its use in home and office conditions, no less. Here are just a few of the more obvious ones:

  1. Low cost of wireless networks and installation of several access points that will provide stable coverage throughout the territory. At the same time, there are no cables, extension cords and adapters that constantly get confused and clutter up the space. "Air" connection is indispensable in premises of historical value, as well as in premises with obstructive architectural features;

  2. This protocol provides full access to the Internet to any device - whether mobile phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer - without being tied to a specific location. Access to the global information space through this protocol is the ability to comfortably use the Internet while lying on your favorite sofa;

  3. Wi-Fi allows you to synchronously use a large number of active connections. By setting wireless connection, you don't have to worry about how many computers and mobile devices will go online at the same time.

What are the wifi modules for a computer?

All popular devices are now equipped with adapters by default. They can be connected to the Internet out of the box, but what about those who have a desktop computer? The answer to this question is obvious - you need to purchase an additional Wi-Fi receiver, install, connect and configure it.

We will talk more about how to install Wi-Fi on a computer below. Now we propose to decide what kind of receivers there are, what are their differences, specifics and advantages.

"Air" adapters are of two types: external and internal. External are the most commonly used and easier to operate. The external receiver is similar to a miniature USB drive (flash drive). It connects to the USB connector on the front or back of the computer, either directly or via a USB cable.

The internal adapter is slightly larger and you will need to open the computer case to install it. Therefore, buy an internal receiver only if you are sure that you will be able to figure out how to install it on the motherboard yourself. When installing an internal module, you must first disconnect the antenna from it, insert the board into the appropriate port on the motherboard (for this, the PCI interface is most often used) and return the antenna to its place.

Further manipulations for installing and turning on wireless adapters do not differ and do not depend on the modification and method of connecting to a computer.

How to install drivers?

Any Wi-Fi receiver is supplied by the manufacturer with a disk containing the necessary full-fledged work driver devices. In addition to drivers for a specific device, the disk may also contain drivers for other adapter models, so during installation you need to be careful not to skip the selection of the device for which drivers are being installed.

Otherwise, the procedure for installing drivers is standardized and provided with an intuitive interface with detailed tips from the Found New Hardware Wizard. Just carefully read the messages that will appear on the screen, and click the appropriate "Next", "OK" and "Finish" buttons.

Most adapters are automatically recognized by current computers and can work even without installing drivers from the bundled CD. It is enough to connect the device to the desired connector and wait a few seconds. As a rule, after that, a message will appear in the tray stating that new equipment has been found, identified and installed, which is ready for use. However, generic drivers cannot completely replace specialized software. Therefore, we advise you not to neglect the installation of drivers, even if everything seems to work flawlessly at first glance.

The driver disk for your Wi-Fi receiver model may also contain a special utility from the developers, which is designed to facilitate the process of setting up Internet access. Moreover, this utility will allow you to further control your Internet connection, monitor the speed and volume of data transfer.

How to set up wifi in WIN XP?

In this guide, we will assume that your home "Access Point" and the Internet distribution device are already configured.

So, to establish an “air” connection on a computer that has Win XP, you need to do the following:

Now, in order to connect to the Internet, it remains to enter the username and password known to you.

How to set up Wi-Fi in Win7?

There are two ways to set up an "air" connection in Win7 OS: in automatic mode and manually. The second option can be useful if the network you plan to connect to is hidden from the general list for security reasons, but you know the name and password to connect your computer to it. Let's consider both methods step by step.

Installing Wi-Fi in Win7 OS in automatic mode

When the operating system is loaded, you can see the Wireless Network Connection icon in the lower right corner of the screen. Click on it. This will open a list of air connections available to you. you need to select from the list the one that is configured in your modem or router.

Installing Wi-Fi in Win7 OS manually

To configure the connection manually, select "Network" in the system tray, then "Network and Sharing Center". Click "Set up a new connection or network". In the next step, check the option "Connect a wireless connection manually" and click the "Next" button.

In the next dialog, fill in all the relevant fields: specify the network name, encryption type and security level. In most cases, the default settings can be left unchanged - use AES and WPA2. In the "Security key" field, you must enter the password for the connection. For more security, check the "Hide characters" box so that the password cannot be read over your shoulder.

The final touch - if you plan to use this connection as the main one in the future, then check the box "Start this connection automatically". Then click the "OK" button.

Installing the device in Windows 8

To enable a wireless connection in Win8, do the following:

  1. Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the system tree on the taskbar or call the Settings Charm through the Charms Bar (similar to pressing the win + I combination). The Wi-Fi panel will appear with right side screen;

  1. you will see the entire list of wireless networks available for connection. Select the one that is configured for you and click the "Connect" button;

  1. The next step is to check the network connection conditions. The system will check the requirements of the selected network and prompt you to enter the necessary data;

  1. After checking the network requirements, the system will prompt you to enter a password. Enter the security key you know and click the "Next" button;

  1. If the password is entered correctly, you will see the message "Connection complete", which means that the Internet connection has been established.

How to turn off the device?

To turn off Wi-Fi or edit the previously entered data, select the icon for wireless networks in the tray (relevant for Win7 and Win8) and select the one that you configured earlier in the drop-down list of all available connections. To disable, use the "Disable" button, and to edit - right-click and select "Properties". In the "Connection" and "Security" tabs, you can either disconnect the device or make changes to the password, encryption type, or security level.

For Win XP, do the following:

  1. Start menu;

  2. Icon "Network Places";

  3. "Wireless connection";

  4. In the list that opens, select established connection and click the "Disable" button.

Adapter wireless network disabled what to do. Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop - TOP reasons.

When a user purchases a laptop, of course he wants to use all the features that it provides. The topic of today's article, how to enable WiFi on a laptop in Windows 7 or 8, I chose for a reason. It would seem that there is nothing complicated here, but if you do not know some of the nuances, then this procedure will not seem so trivial.

Problems can arise and fortunately they are quickly and easily solved, you just need to know how. Just in this article, let's talk about some of the pitfalls that may arise when you turn on Wi Fi.

Is there wifi at all

First of all, we need to find out if your computer or laptop has Wi-Fi. Modern portable computers, laptops, netbooks, phones and other devices have Wi FI. You can check whether your device has one on Google, but I can assure you right away that if you purchased it a long time ago, then the built-in receiver simply may not be there.

Go to the Start menu, right-click on Computer and select Properties.

In the window that opens, click "Device Manager" on the left.

From here you can see: which components in the laptop can be controlled - activate or disable the necessary device. We find the one in the name of which there is a word Wireless. Right-click on it and select "Enable".

By the way, if there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to the service icon, this means that the driver for this device is not installed on the laptop. In this situation, use another device (computer, laptop, netbook, tablet, etc.) through which you download the Wi-Fi drivers, transfer them to the laptop and install them.

Other nuances of enabling Wi-Fi

Above, I described in detail how to enable WiFi on a laptop. But in order for you to see the full picture of how to enable and how to connect to Wi-Fi, strongly follow the link below, as in this article I talk about other nuances that may arise in your case. The article "" was written on a "live" example, so it will be extremely useful for you.

If you are not familiar with installing drivers, then we read: "". To find a driver, go to the official website of your laptop manufacturer, enter the model in the search for the site. Then look for the driver for Wireless in the list.

I do not rule out that users who read this article do not know the Wi-Fi password. If you do not know it, then you will not be able to enter a secure network. To find out how to view the password for Wi-Fi, I recommend reading: "". I also assume that some will ask about hacking, yes, you can hack, but I will not write about it.

Situations are different and you should not exclude the possibility when none of the above tips will help you. How to proceed then? Luckily for you, there are third-party software that you can safely use. Its meaning is that after installation, this program will automatically turn on every time Windows starts and, by pressing a certain key combination, perform certain actions. For example, turn on Bluetooth or WiFi.

There are a huge number of such utilities, I can cite SoftSwitch as an example. In addition to the above functions, she also knows how to turn on the camera and TouchScreen. For each of these functions, there is a certain combination of keyboard buttons that you can familiarize yourself with if you decide to download this creation of programmers. Finding this program on Google will not be difficult for you, since it has a Free Soft license (free license). Download it, install it and enjoy!

And I have on this issue, perhaps, everything. Thanks for reading and I sincerely hope I helped you.

For clarity, watch the video:

WiFi broadband technology has become a part of people's lives. It allows you to solve routine tasks extremely quickly. That is why the question of why WiFi does not work on a laptop is very important. I would like to note right away that there are a lot of reasons why WiFi may not work on a laptop, and this article is not a panacea. However, in it you will find a solution to the most common problems, without calling a specialist.

Before blaming the laptop, you should check the access point itself, since it is the router that can cause the wireless network to fail.

First of all, you need to make sure that it is turned on so that other devices, such as a smartphone, tablet or other laptop, can connect to it. If everything is fine with the router, then go ahead.

Why WiFi doesn't work: Video

Checking and installing the network adapter driver

In the case when the router is turned on, the network works, but WiFi still does not turn on on the laptop, you need to check the driver for the wireless adapter and network card. You can do this in Device Manager. You can open it as follows. We find the shortcut "My Computer" (on the desktop, in the Start menu, or in the file manager) and right-click on it. Select "Properties". Next, in the left panel you need to find "Device Manager" and open it.

The menu that appears displays all the devices on the laptop, even if they do not have a driver installed. In this case, they will be marked with an exclamation point. We are interested in the section " Network adapters". Open by double clicking and see if there is a device with an exclamation mark.

If so, right-click on it and select "Delete". We confirm the action. After that, if you have a driver disk, then insert it into the drive and install the necessary software. If there is no such disk, then you will need to go to the official website of the laptop manufacturer and download the necessary software for your model.

It is quite possible that a driver for network equipment was installed earlier, but at some point it stopped working. Why could this happen? The most common cause is a virus attack. It can also be the result of improper shutdown of the device, for example, by long pressing the power button. Sometimes such consequences occur after freezes or hardware errors.

After installing the drivers, we again check the ability to connect to the wireless network. It is worth noting that the above steps are performed regardless of the version of the operating system.

Reinstalling WiFi Driver in Windows: Video

Keyboard drivers

The network module drivers are in order, but the Wi-Fi adapter does not turn on, what should I do? Here you need to understand what is done using the keyboard. As a rule, this is the Fn key combination + the WiFi enable button (marked with the corresponding icon). If the adapter does not turn on when you press these keys, then you should install the driver on the keyboard.

There are cases when the driver is installed, most of the additional keys work, but you still cannot turn on the wireless adapter. In this case, it is recommended to install a special utility to manage the WiFi module. You can download it from the same source as the software.

Checking the status of a wireless connection

Related Articles

If everything is in order with the drivers, but WiFi still does not work, then you should check the status of the network connection. To do this, open the network and sharing control panel by clicking on the network icon in the tray with the right mouse button, and enter the "Change adapter settings" item. Here we find a shortcut to the wireless network (depending on the version of Windows, the name may differ).

If the label is gray, it means that the connection is disabled. You can enable it by right-clicking on the connection and selecting "Enable". After that, the computer will automatically start searching for available networks.

You can also click Diagnostics. Thus, the system will automatically start troubleshooting and troubleshooting related to network adapters. It is worth noting that this procedure can be performed several times in a row, as it can help the second or even third time.

What to do if Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop: Video

A few more reasons why the WiFi adapter may not work

Above were the main reasons why the wireless adapter may fail. Now you know what to do first if WiFi does not work on a laptop. However, it is worth noting that all these are software reasons, which can be eliminated by simply installing new drivers, utilities, as well as performing certain operations in Windows.

Sometimes there are also hardware errors. What does this mean. Hardware failures occur directly with the board itself. In other words, these are physical damage to the network card. To fix such problems, you will have to disassemble the laptop. It is worth noting that some models are extremely easy to disassemble, however, there are also those that are quite difficult to disassemble on their own. It must be warned that without certain knowledge in this area, it is not recommended to disassemble the laptop.

But still in this article we will consider what physical damage can be. For example, if the device was being repaired or you took it apart yourself to clean the cooling system, it is quite possible that the antenna wires are not connected to the WiFi adapter. You can simply forget about them. In this case, the adapter works, but the signal does not catch, even when it is close to the source. The problem is solved by simply connecting the antenna.

Also, the answer to the question why the Wi-Fi module does not work is the banal overheating of the card and its failure. This can happen if the laptop is used in bed, or placed on soft surfaces. The fact is that there are special holes on the bottom cover of the device through which cold air enters the system, cooling the boards.

It is not difficult to guess what will happen if these holes are blocked on long time. Another reason for overheating can be banal dust, which is drawn in by the fan and settles inside the laptop on absolutely all modules and elements of the laptop. For this reason, it is recommended to clean the device from dust at least once a year. Such cleaning will cost many times cheaper than repair.

If the WiFi adapter burned out, it cannot be repaired. It remains only to be replaced. You can check this in the device manager, since when burned, one or another element ceases to be displayed. In addition, if the module is displayed, but does not work, here you can see the error on which it does not function. This, in turn, will allow you to find a solution to the problem.

Above, we have analyzed the most common reasons why the Wi-Fi adapter does not work. They can be solved independently, without the help of specialists. However, if after trying all these methods, you still did not manage to eliminate the cause of the problem, then it is recommended to contact the service center.

The router does not distribute wifi: Video

WiFi is a unique wireless technology that is incredibly popular all over the world. Now there are very few people who prefer regular wired Internet. Connecting and setting up Wi-Fi is not difficult. But even in such a perfect system, sometimes errors occur due to which the Wi-Fi stops working. The most common is a problem with connecting a Wi-Fi router.

Some people are faced with a situation where the router is connected to the network and works, but does not distribute: the computer cannot “see” available network. Why is it so? There may be several reasons for the occurrence:

lack of installed network drivers;

hardware type errors;

arbitrary shutdown of the connection to the computer - it is obvious why in this case the device does not work as it should;

malfunction of the wi-fi module;

WiFi router failure.

There are other problems, but those listed above are the most common reasons why the device does not work. Therefore, we will focus on them.

Problem with network device drivers

Testing the WiFi module driver is carried out in the "Device Manager". This section is located in the Start menu. You can also get to the section through the "My Computer" shortcut by pressing the right mouse button.

In the "Dispatcher" you can see all the devices connected to the computer. We will be interested in network equipment. You need to switch to the branch from . If the branch is missing, it means that the drivers for the wifi adapter have not been installed on the computer.

If there is a branch, one of the network devices may have a “!” sign. This means either the absence or incorrect functioning of one of the drivers. Each of the problems is easily solved with a simple reinstallation of the software. Usually, the software is located on a disk attached to the computer. The wifi adapter for device manager might be called Wireless Network Adapter. Also, everything you need can be downloaded from the Internet using a mobile connection (if another is not available at the moment).

How to check the status of a wireless connection

If everything is in order with the drivers, then the next step is to check the wireless connection. It can simply be disabled. Testing is carried out differently on different operating systems. But it all comes down to one thing: you need to get into the "Network Control Center".

There is a universal way. You need to press Win + R, after which a window with a line will appear. In the line you need to type the command control panel and press Enter. This will open the Control Panel. Here we go to "Network and Internet", then to the "Network and Sharing Center". In the "Center" we will be interested in the section "Change adapter settings", located on the left. Clicking there will allow you to see the status of all connections that are available on the computer.

"Wireless connection" - that's what will be important to us. If the label is not colored, but gray, this means that there is no signal. You can start the connection by double-clicking the left mouse button. After starting, the computer starts searching for all available connections.

If they do not appear, then you can try to perform system diagnostics. It is carried out through the "Network Control Center" and the item "Change adapter settings". On the label " Wireless connection"You must right-click already. In the window that opens, click the "Diagnostics" field. The computer conducts the test itself. Based on the result of the check, the user receives advice on what to do next.

What to do if a hardware error occurs

A hardware error would indicate a problem directly within the network card. In a word, if the computer does not see the adapter for connecting to Wi-Fi, it means that this Wi-Fi device is not functioning. There are two main reasons:

the device is broken;

there was a problem with wifi drivers.

The second option has already been described by us. However, if Wi-Fi drivers are available, and the computer continues to not see the adapter, this means a breakdown. One of the most common causes of failure is the combustion of the device.

The cause of combustion may be overheating if the computer has been operating at its maximum capacity for a long time. If we are dealing with a laptop, then this happens even more often here, since many users forget the device on a soft surface that blocks access to the hole through which cooling air enters. This problem is solved by simply replacing components with similar ones.

It should be borne in mind that the lack of experience in independent manipulations with computers can lead to even more harmful effects. This is especially true for laptops that have more complex structure. the best way out from the situation there will be an appeal to the service center, they will accurately determine the reason why the device does not work.
Hardware-type connection errors also include a disconnected antenna. Most often, this problem occurs in laptops or desktop computers that have been cleaned or repaired in some way. The specialist who carried out the procedure could simply forget to connect the device, or he connected it incorrectly. This makes it impossible for the adapter to function normally, which does not work normally and cannot normally catch the signal distributed by the router, even when it is near the source.

A rather rare case is the clogging of the antenna terminals with dust. This breaks the internal contact. The solution to the problem is cleaning.

Why Wi-Fi router does not distribute the Internet

The connection problems described above refer to malfunctions in the computers themselves. But often there are problems that are related to how the router works (or rather does not work) and does not distribute the Internet.

There are two main problems:

inability to establish a wireless connection;

no access when connected.

These failures can be easily solved on your own, without resorting to the services of specialists.

How to solve a problem with connecting to a wireless connection

Testing how the router works begins with checking the status of the indicators that are located on the external panel of the router. During normal operation, the LED next to the antenna pattern will be either solid or flashing. If there is no glow at all, it means that the wireless module is not running on the router. On certain models, there is a separate button that one of the family members can accidentally turn off.

The lack of a button makes it a little more difficult to solve the problem. You need to go to the "Wireless Network" section located in the web interface of the router. In the English menu, this section is called "Wireless". There is a checkmark next to the "Enable" box (in English - "Enable"). A mouse click may solve the problem.

It is possible that when the device does not distribute the Internet, the malfunction is related to the radio channel used. Most router models have an automatic configuration function. If it is missing, you can try installing the 1st or 6th channel. They should be suitable for our country.

It happens that it becomes impossible to connect to a wireless network, as the network displays a message about an incorrectly typed password. It is worth checking the security settings in the web interface. The set encryption type must be AES. The general security standard is WPA2-PSK.

How to solve the problem if there is no access while connected

Quite often it happens that the connection starts, but the process itself takes a long time. The status shows the message "Obtaining IP". After a while, the connection is dropped.

This means that network clients cannot obtain an address due to a disabled DHCP server. You can check this through the settings in the local network. You will need a LAN section, where there should be a checkmark next to the DCHP parameter.

Access problems may occur due to incorrect operation of DNS servers. Incorrectly assigning them to network clients or not assigning them at all, as well as unstable servers, are the three main reasons.

The solution to the elimination problem is as follows. You need to use public DNS. They are provided by Yandex and Google. In the first case, you need to set 77.88.8.8 in the settings, and for Google this value is 8.8.8.8. Data is entered on the computer in the properties of the Internet protocol of any version of TCP/IP.

Conclusion

All of the above are troubles that you can get rid of on your own. In any other situations, it would be better to contact the provider's technical support or professional craftsmen.

What to do if Wifi does not work on a laptop? If you are faced with such a problem, do not despair. She is solvable. But first you need to find out for what reasons wifi does not work in a laptop. It can be both software problems and hardware failures. If there are software problems, the situation can be resolved quickly and free of charge. If the Wi-Fi module burned out, only its replacement will help. Now a little more about how to solve the problem.

What to do if Wifi does not work on a laptop?

Troubleshooting with built-in Windows tools

Any laptop has dedicated key combinations to enable or disable the Wi-Fi module. Usually it's CTRL+F2, but in different models laptops use various combinations, such as Fn + F2. Check if wifi is turned off with these combinations. If for some reason this method does not work, check the status of the adapter through the control panel:

  1. Go to control panel.
  2. Open Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> change adapter settings.
  3. In the window that opens, find "Wireless Network". If it is inactive (gray icon), then double-clicking on it will activate it and Wi-Fi on the laptop will work.

If this did not help and wifi on your laptop still does not work, then you should go to the device manager and check the relevance of the drivers and the status of the module. For this you need:

  1. Go back to the control panel.
  2. Open System and Security -> System -> Device Manager. A list of hardware installed on the laptop will open.
  3. Find the section "network adapters" in the list. By opening it, you can see all installed laptop communication modules.

If wi-fi does not work properly, then to the left of its name you can see an icon with a yellow exclamation point. This is sure sign that you need to reinstall the drivers. If you did not find your wi-fi module in this list, but the dispatcher identified an "unknown device", in this case you also need to install the driver. They can be found on the laptop manufacturer's website in the "downloads" or "support" section. After downloading, just start the installation and follow the instructions of the installation wizard. You may need to restart your laptop.

Troubleshooting laptop hardware

Some laptop models have hardware buttons or toggle switches to enable / disable wireless modules. Before interfering with the operation of the laptop, check if they are in the "off" position.

If wifi does not work on the laptop due to a hardware malfunction, then a visit to the service center will help. Of course, the Wi-Fi module can be replaced at home, but if you do not have experience in the field of laptop repairs, it is better not to go into it. In case the masters have asked for a very round sum for repairs, you can use external Wi-Fi network cards.

For a long time, manufacturers such as Asus and TP-Link have been releasing miniature “USB whistles” with nano receivers. For example, TP-LINK TL-WN725N and ASUS USB-N10 Nano work in the N150 standard and resemble a wireless mouse receiver in size and shape. They are completely invisible and very easy to use. Their price does not exceed 15 dollars. Yes, one USB port will be constantly busy, but this is the easiest and cheapest way to solve the problem. Otherwise, you will have to fork out for an expensive replacement of the native module and be patient.

An interesting incident happened the other day, which prompted me to write this article. I got a completely new, just bought Hewlett Packard HP 15-AC052UR laptop with the G8 already preinstalled. The owner is a modern person and really wanted to try out the new Windows 10 operating system, so he asked me to upgrade. No sooner said than done. The update procedure went without a hitch, but then trouble began. The first thing that caught my eye after logging in was that the laptop does not see the WiFi network. In the list of connections, there was a red cross on the adapter icon. There was no reaction to any attempts to somehow turn on the adapter. Well, let's fix it. Looking ahead, I will say that I solved the problem and it was very specific. But I want to use this case as an example to make a small guide on what to do if Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop.

Step 1: Is the WiFi adapter enabled?

As practice shows, the cause of more than half of the problems with the wireless network on laptops, netbooks and ultrabooks is that the network card is turned off. How to check it? Let's start with the Wi-Fi power button - there is one on almost every laptop. It can be in the form of a separate button or slider, like this:

Or combined with one of the F1-F12 keys:

In the latter case, to turn it on, you must press this button in tandem with the function key fn. If the adapter turned on successfully, then the indicator on the case should light up. It can be made separately and marked with an antenna icon, or located on the power button:

If the laptop does not respond to pressing this button, then most likely you do not have a driver installed for function keys. In order to download it, we go to the official website of the manufacturer, open the "Support" or "Downloads" section and enter the laptop model in the search bar. In the results found, we are looking for software for function keys, download, install.
We check.

Note: If you have a modern laptop, then it may have such a button "On the plane":

It was made by analogy with smartphones and tablets to disable the radio module. When it is enabled, instead of the network icon, an icon in the form of an airplane appears on the system tray:

It must be turned off, otherwise the laptop will not see the wireless network and will not be able to connect to it by itself.

OK, hardware network card turned on, but Wi-Fi does not work! Have you enabled it in software? Let's check.
Look at the tray icon. If it has an asterisk:

Then skip step 1 and step 2 and go straight to step 3. When it has a red cross:

This means that the network is turned off. To enable in Windows 10, there is a separate switch located in the “Settings”->”Network and Internet” section:

By the way, it didn’t move for me, or rather, when I tried to move it to the “On” position, it returned to the “Off” position itself. and I clicked on the "Configure adapter settings" link.
In Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, this is not the case, and therefore you have to go to Windows connections. Press the key combination Win + R, enter the command ncpa.cpl:

We find the "Wireless Network" icon in the list of connections. It's gray? Then right-click on it and select "Enable".

If the WiFi adapter icon is not there at all, most likely the driver is not installed.
Everything was much sadder for me - the Wi-Fi adapter was active, but there was a red cross on it.
Let's move on to the next step.

Step 2. Is the Wi-Fi driver installed?

Very often, after reinstalling Windows, users forget to install some drivers or install, but not those. Of course, the network card will not work in this situation. Fixing.
We go into the Device Manager, find the section "Network Adapters" and see what is there. There must be at least two items. The first is a regular Ethernet network card, the second is wireless.
If there is only a regular network, then look - Above in the Manager there should be an unknown device with an exclamation point. This is your adapter, for which you now need to download the laptop WiFi adapter driver from the manufacturer's website and install it.
I had the driver installed, so I decided to look at its status: I right-clicked and selected the "Properties" menu item:

If everything is in order, then on the “General” tab in the “Device Status” field there should be a line “The device is working normally”.
If some error is displayed there, then first you need to try reinstalling the driver. To do this, right-click on the adapter again and select "Delete". After that, you need to restart your computer, go to the Device Manager again and see if the driver is installed.
It did not help me and I decided to update it. I downloaded the latest version from the Hewlett Packard website, in the Device Manager, right-click on the device and select "Update drivers":

The version has been updated, the device works fine, but WiFi still does not work on the laptop. What to do?
In the end, this is what helped me. On the official website, in the list available for download, I saw that for my laptop model there is a BIOS update that fixes compatibility issues with Windows 10. Download the utility, run it and wait for it to work and reboot the system:

After that, the wireless network of the laptop earned.
Note: You can install updates either manually or through a special utility. Each manufacturer has its own application for this. For example, for Hewlett Packard, this is HP Support Assistant. The application will connect to the server and check for driver updates. If there are, you will be prompted to install them.

Step 3. Does the laptop see the WiFi network?

The hardware part is checked - let's take on the software. Very often, users complain that the laptop does not see the WiFi network. The reason for such a malfunction can be both in the laptop and in the router that distributes Wi-Fi. There is no third option. How to determine the culprit? Very simple, left-click on the network icon in the tray and see what is in the drop-down menu.

If the laptop sees other people's networks, but does not see its own, you need to check the router.
If it does not see any network at all, we return to Steps 1 and 2, since the problem is most likely hardware.
For the purity of the experiment, you can use any mobile gadget - tablet or smartphone and see if it connects normally. It will immediately be clear where to "Dig".

As a special case, you can consider the option when the computer cannot connect to the wireless network due to an authorization error. If you have connected to it before, then in this case you should try to remove it from the list of known ones and reconnect:

In Windows 10, this is done in the "Manage Settings", in Windows 8 you need to right-click on your network in the list of networks and select the "Forget" menu item. If you connect to this WiFi network for the first time, enter a 100% correct password and still reject authorization by mistake, then the problem is in the router and you should first try to make a purely digital key. If that doesn't help, try resetting it. In 90% of cases, this allows you to successfully solve the problem.

Step 4. Wi-Fi is, the Internet is not.

A very common problem for novice users. It is usually caused by incorrect Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) settings. You can check this as follows. In Windows, right-click on "Wireless Network" and select the menu item "Status":

In the "Connection Status" window, click the "Details" button. Another window will open, in which we first look at the line "Default gateway" - there should be the IP address of the router. It is also usually listed as the primary DNS server.
Now look above, in the line "IPv4 Address". The IP from the subnet of the router should be registered there (you can see an example in the screenshot). But if there is nothing at all in these lines, or an IP from the 169.254.X.X subnet is registered, then this means that it was not automatically assigned from the router and is not manually registered.
Click on the "Properties" button and open the item "IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4)":

Here you need to enter the address of the router in the fields "Main gateway" and "Preferred DNS server". You can see it on a sticker on the bottom of the device case (unless, of course, it has been changed). The mask is usually 255.255.255.0, and in the "IP address" field, specify any address from the subnet of the router. Click on OK and reconnect.
If after that a message appears that “network without Internet access”, then in this case we go here.

Instruction

To connect to a wireless network, you must activate and correctly configure the Wi-Fi adapter of the mobile computer. Open the "Start" menu and go to "Computer" properties. Find and open the Device Manager menu.

Expand the "Network adapters" submenu and find the device designed to work with the Wi-Fi channel. If this equipment is disabled, then right-click on its name and select "Enable". Make sure there is no Wi-Fi adapter next to the name exclamation mark. This means that all required drivers are installed for this device.

Sometimes you need to press certain keys to activate the Wi-Fi adapter. Take this action. Click on the LAN icon located in the system tray. In the drop-down menu, select the desired network and click the "Connection" button.

If the network is protected by a password, enter it in the window that appears and press the Enter key. Wait until the connection with the wireless access point is established.

If you need to connect to a network that operates in covert broadcasting mode, then set its parameters yourself. Open the Network and Sharing Center. Select the Manage Wireless Networks menu.

Click the "Add" button and select the "Create a network profile manually" option. Complete the table provided. Specify exactly the parameters with which the access point you need is currently working. Click "Next".

In the new window, click the "Connection" button and wait for the connection to the network equipment to be established. Check network activity. Try opening shared files or other network PC operations.

Creating your own wireless network is carried out using various devices. At home, as a rule, Wi-Fi routers are used. But sometimes it makes more sense to connect equipment of a different type.

You will need

  • - Wi-Fi module;
  • - access to the Internet.

Instruction

If you already have a desktop computer connected to the Internet, use a Wi-Fi adapter to create a wireless network. Such equipment is divided into two types: external adapters operating via a USB channel, and internal modules connected to the PC motherboard via a PCI port.

Select the desired type of device. Please note that in order to connect two or more mobile devices, you will need an adapter that supports hotspot mode. A striking example of such a device is the Asus PCI-G31 Wi-Fi module.

Turn off the computer and plug the adapter into the motherboard's PCI slot. Install the antenna into the adapter's existing port. Turn on the PC and wait for the operating system to load.

When working in Windows XP, install the drivers from the special disk supplied with the module. For Windows Seven or Vista systems, please use the Ralink Wireless Utility.

After installing the appropriate software, proceed to configure the wireless communication module settings. Run the utility and open the Soft+AP (STA+AP) tab.

Change the parameters of the future access point. Enter its name in the SSID field. Fill in the Authentication field. To do this, select the authentication mode and specify the key type.

Now enter the password you need to secure your wireless network. When using WEP encryption, it must be six characters long, and for WPA (WPA2) eight characters.

Fill in the Max numbers of peers field. Specify the number of mobile devices that will be connected to the hotspot at the same time. Click the Apply button. Now right-click on the utility icon and select Soft+AP Mode.

After waiting for the new menu to load, specify an active Internet connection that mobile devices will have access to. Connect laptops to hotspot. Check if the connection is working.

Instruction

We turn on the computer, open any installed browser and enter the IP address of the router in the address bar. Most often, this is 192.168.1.1, although there may be other options. What is the address of our router, as well as the “login-password” pair for accessing the settings - we learn from the instructions for its operation.

Once on the settings page, we find the "Wireless Network" tab. The main settings are networks, authentication method (most commonly WPA), and WPA passkey. We set the values \u200b\u200bthat we need and enter the access key - it will be the password for connecting other Wi-Fi to our wireless network. We also enter an identification string (SSID). It will be displayed as the name of our wireless network when it is discovered by other devices.

Go to the "Internet connection" or "WAN" tab. We enter the login and password for accessing the Internet, as well as the connection settings: its type (PPTP, L2TP or others) and the corresponding IP address. These network settings are best obtained from your ISP in advance.

We confirm all the settings by clicking "OK" or "Apply", and reboot the router.
To check the performance of the wireless network, we try to connect to it using either a PDA / smartphone. Through the search we find our network by SSID. When connected, the device will ask for a passkey. We enter the corresponding WPA key. Home wireless network installed!

With the widespread use of laptops, the era of network cables began to gradually end. Now many cannot imagine their life without such banal things as wi-fi. Create such network It’s not difficult at all, and there are more than enough options.

We will show how to create a wireless network using the Asus PCI-G31 wifi adapter as an example. Working with him is easy and pleasant, and will take no more than ten minutes. Install the adapter in the PCI slot in your , and turn on the latter. Further, the situation will develop differently for the operating systems Windows XP + Vista and Windows 7.

Windows XP. Everything is simple here. After installing the software, run the program displayed in the tray. Select the Config item and go to the Soft AP tab. Put near the item Soft AP_mode. If you want wireless network users to have in , then in the Internet column, select the required network. Now go to Config - Access Control, and one by one enter the MAC addresses of the network adapters of the laptops you need. Note: The MAC address is found like this: win + r - cmd - ipconfig / all.

Unfortunately, adequately working software for windows 7 has not yet been written. But there is a way out of this situation due to the fact that Ralink wifi adapters are made on the same chip as Asus. Download and install the Ralink Wireless Utility. Note: when working in Windows 7, the original software is not required - only drivers are needed. Right-click on the tray icon and select Switch to Soft AP mode. Run the program and go to the AP tab. Here you can name your access point (SSID) and password (Key Material). As usual, if you plan to distribute the Internet to other devices, then in the properties of your device, allow access to the wireless network using this adapter. You don't need to configure anything else, because. network access is provided with a password entry.

Helpful advice

For Windows Vista, it's worth trying native software, and in case of failure, install Ralink.

note

The described method of creating a wireless network is applicable to Windows Seven.

Technologies such as infrared, Bluetooth are becoming less and less popular, because they are being replaced by modern wireless networks. Wi-Fi is used more and more often, as there are a large number of free points in cities.

Instruction

To wireless compound certain key combination. Usually it's Fn + F2. To connect to the Internet, you need to look for specific access points. On a personal computer, you can connect to Wi-Fi only if you have a special removable device. Ask a Peripherals consultant about Wi-Fi devices for personal computers. Prices may be different, but mainly depends on the radius of signal reception.

Once the device is purchased, unpack it and insert it into a USB drive. If you have USB 3.0 technology in your computer, then insert Wi-Fi there. The computer system will automatically detect the new device. Also included is a CD with drivers. Insert it into the drive and install all drivers. Next, restart your computer so that all saves in the system are committed. After the reboot, an icon will appear in the tray that will show the Wi-Fi status.

Go to "Control Panel". This can be done using the "My Computer" shortcut. Next, click on the shortcut called "Wireless Networks". Here are all the settings that relate to W-Fi technologies, as well as Bluetooth. Click the "Turn Wi-Fi" button.

After that, the wireless technology will be active, but it is not yet possible to connect to the Internet, since you need to look for special access points that can be password-protected so that unauthorized persons cannot enter the system and automatically connect to the connection. To do this, click the "Find new compound". The system will automatically start scanning access points that are in action.

If no such systems are found, try scanning elsewhere. Once compound found, try to connect. As practice shows, some cafes and educational institutions use free access points that allow you to connect to the Internet. You can find a list of such establishments on the Internet using search engines.

A large number of modern Internet providers provide Internet access services over a wireless channel. This system is especially convenient for those people who have at their disposal several stationary and mobile computers.

You will need

  • WiFi module.

Instruction

To connect to any wireless access point, a properly working Wi-Fi module is required. This can be a device built into a laptop, a PCI adapter connected to the motherboard, or a USB device that works with network WiFi. Choose the right equipment.

mode

To boot your computer in safe mode, press F8 when starting the system. It is best to press the button several times at a frequency of about once per second - this will allow you not to miss the moment. A window will appear with options for starting the operating system. First try the "Load Last Known Good Configuration" option, in many cases this option will solve all problems.

If the computer refuses to boot in this option, you should try safe mode. Its selection lines are at the top of the window. You will have three options: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Line Support, and Safe Mode with Network Driver Loading. Choose the first one: in this case, you will get the Windows interface that is quite familiar to you. Only the screen will be black, in its corners you will see the inscription "Safe Mode".

If you select the "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" option, the console (command prompt) will be launched instead of Windows Explorer. This mode can also be useful, but you need to be able to work with the command line. If you have a console open, type HELP and press Enter to display a list of commands.

How can you use safe mode? If you can boot only in it, try running the rollback procedure to an earlier state of the computer: "Start" - "All Programs" - "Accessories" - "Utilities" - "System Restore". If the rollback succeeds, after the reboot you will get a restored system. Restoration is possible if restore points were previously created on the computer. When working in the console, the start of recovery can be called with the command: %systemroot%system32
estore
strui.exe.

Safe mode is useful if several people work on the computer, each has its own accounts, and one of the workers to log in. In a safe mode you will be logged in as an administrator and you can easily change your forgotten password. To do this, open the "Control Panel", find the "User Accounts" section, select the desired account and change the password.

One of the advantages of Asus laptops is the presence of the Bluetooth function. However, it may not always be available. Even if it is installed by default on the computer. Knowing the nuances will help you avoid many troubles.

But this is only at first glance. You will need drivers to enable Bluetooth, especially if the operating system was installed by yourself, and not by the manufacturer.

Drivers to enable Bluetooth

As mentioned above, in order to activate the Bluetooth connection, you need to download the drivers. But if the manufacturer has relied on a 64-bit system, then there may not be drivers for an 86-bit system.

Windows has two bit depths: 32-bit and 64-bit. And 86-bit is the second designation of 32-bit bitness.
Therefore, Bluetooth cannot be enabled. In this case, you need to reinstall the operating system from 86-bit to 64-bit.

In order to check the bit depth in the operating system, you need to right-click on the "My Computer" shortcut. In the window that opens, select "Properties".
If everything is in order here, then you need to start looking for Asus drivers. They are all on the official website of the manufacturer, sorted by model. Downloading from other sites is undesirable, since the file itself may contain viruses.

If your personal (computer) is running Windows 7 or Windows 8, then you can install Bluetooth drivers from Windows XP or Windows Vista on them. In some cases, a driver disk may be sold with a laptop. Check if you have it somewhere.

Even in cases where the operating system was originally installed by the manufacturer, there may not be drivers for Bluetooth. After you download and install them, try to connect.

Enable Bluetooth

The most common way to activate a Bluetooth connection is to press the fn and f2 keys together. Depending on the modification of the laptop, the second button may be different. It usually has an antenna on it. For faster turning on the bluetooth, a special button is provided on the side of the case.

If the above methods fail to connect, you can try the following algorithm of actions:
1. Click Start.
2. Select All Programs.
3. Open the "Standard" folder.
4. Locate the Bluetooth icon.

You can download the program to turn on Bluetooth yourself if none of the above methods has worked.

When all the components for connecting to the Internet have already been purchased, you can begin to connect. So, setting up a wireless wi-fi network depends on the main device, represented by a personal computer, laptop. Setting up the World Wide Web directly depends on the operating system of a personal computer.

Any wi-fi camera for Windows is also launched, after taking into account the features of the equipment provided. The system selected by the user must have a window in which a special network connection management item is displayed.

If you need to establish a wireless connection in Windows xp, then you should consider the difference between the current product of the computer companies and previous versions.

Setting up a wireless wi-fi network in Windows xp is considered more complicated than in windows 7.

windows xp. First, the user must select the "Network Connections" option from the "Start" menu of the control panel. Then find "wireless connection" and click on it. After enabling this command, communication is established, but you should view the available wireless networks by selecting the appropriate item.

In order for the main device to work in a given direction, "Change network preference order" is required. When a new window appears, you can already put a marker next to "Use Windows to configure the network" and click on "Advanced". Next, you will again have to return to "Change network preference order" and uncheck "Key provided automatically". Then the network details are entered, and OK is pressed to confirm.

Wireless network access for Windows 7

Setting up a wireless wi-fi network in Windows 7 begins with the "Control Panel", in which "Advanced system settings" are selected.

Then go to the "Computer Name" tab and click the "Change" option.
After this action, a window appears on the monitor with the names of the computer or domain. The personal work device itself must have a unique name. If this name had to be changed, a restart of the computer is required.

Setting options for Internet connection in Windows 7

Next, click on the wired connection icon, which is located on the lower right side of the monitor. This is where the "Network and Sharing Center" appears. It must be selected by pressing the confirmation key. From the list that appears, select the "Add" option and create a "Computer-computer" network. To continue click "Next".

In the fields with names and network parameters, enter data if necessary. Then confirm the action and turn on Internet connection sharing. The windows 7 wi-fi wireless network will start working immediately after clicking "Close".

Connecting Windows 8 to WiFi

Initially installed settings on personal computers or laptops do not always allow you to connect to a wireless network without problems. After all, the windows 8 operating system may not see the wireless adapter, although it is always present.

Setting up a wireless wi-fi network in Windows 8 usually starts by clicking the division icon with an asterisk. After that, a list of suggested wireless networks appears on the monitor. One of them should be selected by typing the required security code. The above action is confirmed with the "Next" button.

When it comes to your home network, it's best to choose shared. When connected normally, the asterisk next to the division icon disappears and the reception level begins to be displayed.

Implementation of Wireless Reception by the Tenth Version

operating room Windows system 10 differs from previous versions in additional settings that include the use of touch screens. It also automatically updates the necessary drivers. Because of this additional feature, setting up a wireless wi-fi network in Windows 10 is not too difficult. The user just needs to click on the icon in the lower right corner of the monitor and decide on the available network.

WiFi connection on Windows 10

It is also possible to automatically select a connection by checking the box next to the corresponding item. If the wi-fi adapter is not connected, then on the considered marker with divisions, instead of an asterisk, a cross is displayed. This is easy to fix by pressing a specific button.

Most often, the wireless network is protected by a password, which must be entered in the window that appears upon connection and confirmed.

On modern computers and laptops, there is already a built-in special radio receiver responsible for sending and receiving information at a distance without the use of wires. For this reason, wi-fi connection settings occur without much difficulty.

Hey! Since I myself use an ASUS laptop, I decided to write a separate article about enabling Wi-Fi on an ASUS laptop and connecting to a wireless network. This is a very popular topic. As a rule, when it first becomes necessary to connect a laptop to WiFi networks, users have a lot of questions: "where to turn on this Wi-Fi", "where to find it on an Asus laptop", "how to connect to a wireless network", etc. In addition, many problems and errors can arise. Both in the process of turning on the wireless module, and in the process of connecting to the network.

We have a task: to connect an ASUS laptop to a Wi-Fi network. And here it is important to understand that the decision depends to a greater extent not on the laptop itself. (manufacturer's company), or a specific model, but from the operating system installed on the laptop. Now the most popular are Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7. I think that it makes no sense to consider Windows XP anymore. Yes, this system is still being used, but everything has been set up there for a long time. And I don't have XP installed either.

We will do everything according to this scheme:

  • First, I'll show you how to connect your laptop to Wi-Fi. Most likely, you already have everything turned on and configured there. And it is unnecessary to load yourself with some buttons and settings.
  • Next, I'll show you how to turn on Wi-Fi on an ASUS laptop. This step will come in handy when you can't connect in the usual way. We will include a keyboard shortcut, and without using the Fn key.

I will try to show everything using the example of Windows 10 and Windows 7. Most of the settings and actions will be similar. My laptop is ASUS K56CM (not the newest). But the article should be suitable for all models, including: X553M, X55a, X54H, N61VG, X751M and others.

Connect Asus laptop to Wi-Fi network

Ideally, the internet connection status should be like this (provided that the network cable is not connected to the laptop):

This star icon here indicates that the laptop sees available wireless networks for connection, and is ready to connect to them. If you have a different status, see the article below. To connect, just click on this icon, select the desired network, click the connect button, enter the password (if the network is secure) and you're done.

This is how the connection goes when everything is configured and enabled. Of course, there may be errors like , but that's another story. Ideally, everything goes as I showed above. Very cool if you can do it. Next, I will show you what to do if the Wi-Fi adapter in your laptop is working, the driver is installed on it, but for some reason it is disabled.

There may also be a connection icon in the form of an antenna with a red cross (no connections available):

In this case, see the solutions in the following articles:

  • For Windows 7 -
  • For Windows 10 -

Turn on the Wi-Fi adapter on your ASUS laptop

If the connection icon on the notification panel does not in any way resemble a wireless network, but looks like a computer with a cross, then most likely the wireless module on the laptop is disabled, or does not work at all (most often due to an uninstalled driver). Now let's figure it out.

I immediately advise you to go to the "Device Manager", and see if there is a "Wireless" adapter. If it is not there, then there is no point in torturing the laptop and yourself. You need to install drivers. If the adapter is not in the device manager, then there is no way to enable it. And it doesn’t matter what kind of laptop you have, Asus, or some other.

It's very easy to check. In Windows 7, open Start and start typing "manager..." in the search bar. Launch "Device Manager". On Windows 10, it's exactly the same, only there is a search button next to the Start button.

Open the "Network Adapters" tab in Device Manager and look. If you have an adapter there in the name of which is "Wi-Fi", "Wireless" "802.11 b / g / n", then everything is Ok. We look at the article further and try to enable it. Since you are already in the device manager, then try right-clicking on the adapter. If there is an item "Enable" in the menu, then click on it. Perhaps after that Wi-Fi will work. You will understand this by the icon on the notification bar (if the network cable is not connected to the laptop!).

If there is no such adapter., there is only one (network card), then this most likely indicates that the Wireless adapter driver is not installed. Previously, I have already prepared an article in which I showed how to install the Wi-Fi driver on ASUS laptops:. The instructions are very detailed. After installing the driver, everything should work.

And we continue. What to do if there is an adapter, but there is no possibility to connect to a wireless network.

Turn on Wi-Fi with a switch, or a combination of buttons on the keyboard

It seems to me that ASUS no longer makes separate mechanical switches to enable / disable wireless modules. But on older laptops they can be. If you have an older model, then look for such a switch on the laptop case.

Typically, keyboard shortcuts are used for these tasks. Key fn with a key from a row "F". But ASUS laptops, most often this Fn+F2. An antenna is drawn on the F2 key. Here's what it looks like on my laptop:

If after pressing the key combination there is no result, then I advise you to press once and restart the laptop.

Trying to turn on Wi-Fi on an ASUS laptop without the Fn key

It doesn't matter what Windows you have installed. Right-click on the Internet connection icon and select "Network and Sharing Center". Next, go to "Change adapter settings".

There should be "Wireless Network Connection". Or "Wireless Network" - in Windows 10. If this connection is with the status "Disabled", then right-click on it and select "Enable".

In Windows 10, the wireless network can also be disabled with the "Wi-Fi" button:

All these tips should definitely help you. If you encounter a situation that is not described in this article, or the solutions described above do not help, then write in detail about your case in the comments. Write the ASUS laptop model, and what problem you encountered in the process of connecting to a Wi-Fi network.
