Grinding glass with your own hands. Do-it-yourself glass cutting and straight edge processing

  • 12.06.2019

It happens that a completely new car, having already passed 2-3 thousand kilometers, frustrates with a richly scratched windshield. There can be quite a few factors that lead to this. This is road debris raised by the wheels of other cars, and the so-called "sandblast", stones.

Road debris, grit and rocks can scratch your windshield

Of particular danger, in particular, are the brushes of ordinary windshield wipers. As a result, the driver is faced with a choice: to replace the damaged part or figure out how and with what to polish the windshield at home. Based on the fact that the price of new glass sometimes goes off scale, we will dwell in more detail on the second option for solving the problem.

How and with what you can polish the windshield of a car

It is important to weigh your strengths right away, since glass is not at all a material that can be easily polished. At the same time, it is necessary to separate the concepts of polishing and polishing. The latter, by the way, is practically not used as a procedure for restoring automotive glass.

For polishing work, you will need an appropriate machine. To it on sale there are a large number of circles of various diameters (selected depending on the area of the damaged areas of the glass), as well as varying degrees of abrasive ability.

To polish the windshield, you will need an appropriate polishing machine.

"Polisher" is convenient in that it is possible to bring to it a channel for a constant supply of water to the treated area. It is difficult to overestimate the wetting of the contact zone, since it effectively levels out the large temperature drops on the treated surface, which arise as a result of the friction force.

But at the same time, it makes no sense to buy special electrical equipment for the sake of polishing the windshield, because in this case the budget of the venture will increase many times over. It is good if there is an opportunity to borrow tools for a few hours from friends, a neighbor in the garage, etc. In principle, you can get by with an ordinary drill, for which purchasing a special polishing nozzle will not be a serious investment.

Other materials needed for polishing should include:

  • abrasive paste;
  • masking tape;
  • film to protect other car surfaces;
  • a set of microfiber cloths;
  • special cleaner for glass;
  • hand sprayer for water;
  • colored marker.

Step by step windshield polishing at home

For the sake of polishing the windshield, you should not buy special electrical equipment, because the budget of the venture will increase many times

Always start with a thorough car wash. If even an ordinary grain of sand gets into the polishing zone, new, deeper grooves and other damage will immediately appear on the glass. Also, ideally, the body should be covered with a protective plastic wrap, on which a “window” is carefully cut out for working with glass. The edges of this window must be fixed with tape.

If the damage area is small, for example, a single scratch, then you can get by with the usual “frame” of masking tape with curved edges. The adhesive tape visually zones the windshield and does not allow splashes from the polishing wheel to scatter over a long distance. In any case, the place of damage on the glass from the passenger compartment is outlined with a marker. This will allow you not to lose sight of the scratched area even when polishing paste is applied to it.

We eliminate scuffs from the "wipers" with our own hands

Scuffs on the windshield from the "wipers" do not penetrate deeply, the thickness of the damaged layer is only a few microns

Two "arcs" from the wiper blades are a very common occurrence on the windshield. Usually such defects do not penetrate deeply and imply the presence of a damaged layer several microns thick. It is realistic to completely remove the haze with the help of a ready-made abrasive wheel for primary processing or a regular felt wheel with a polishing paste applied to it.

In the case of using a paste, it is necessary to evenly distribute the composition over the entire treated area, and then start polishing, constantly moving the polishing wheel. It is not recommended to hold the machine in one place, as overheating and cracking of the material may occur. You should also not allow the polish to dry out, if you feel that polishing has become more difficult, moisten the surface with water from a spray bottle. However, you should not overdo it with moisture, otherwise hydroplaning will begin and you will have to make more efforts.

How to bring the transparency of the glass to the ideal

When polishing, you need to periodically stop and wash off the remains of the paste from the treated area in order to inspect the results of the efforts. It is important to visually analyze the surface from different angles and make sure that further polishing is necessary.

When the goal is to polish a relatively large area, it will be appropriate to draw conditional borders on the back of the glass, dividing everything into squares. In this case, when moving from one cell to the second, it is necessary to do an “overlap” polishing so that there are no untreated stripes left and the restored glass has a uniform surface.

During processing, make sure that the polishing wheel is at an angle of approximately 5º relative to the glass. At the same time, it is advisable not to raise the revolutions above 2000, the optimal indicator is 1500-1700 rpm. The total amount of time spent on polishing is usually 2-5 hours. After completing the procedure, you need to wash the glass with water and a special cleaner, then wipe everything dry with a microfiber cloth.

Get rid of serious scratches

If the windshield has deep damage, you should not hope for a complete restoration of the original appearance of the part.

When we are dealing with deep damage to the windshield, such as scratches from sharp metal objects, you should not hope for a complete restoration of the original appearance of the part. In a desperate attempt to focus all your efforts on a hard-to-remove furrow, you run the risk of either causing overheating and destruction of the windshield, or getting a noticeable notch in this place.

When a significant layer of glass is removed, its geometry changes. Thus, the driver can observe the formation of diopters, a kind of lens that noticeably distorts the picture and negatively affects the perception of the road situation. Eyes from such glass quickly get tired.

Experts say that you can only partially eliminate the negative effect of a deep scratch by slightly smoothing its sharp edges with a polishing wheel. With good lighting, such defects still remain noticeable. Even the use of filling the scratch cavity with a photopolymer as an alternative will eliminate the problem by only 70-80%.

Sandpaper and other "classic" glass polishing products

Many in the old fashioned way prefer to use not modern pastes to remove haze, scratches, but the good old “sandpaper”. For such purposes, a fraction from 600 to 2500 is suitable - depending on the depth of damage (the more serious the defect, the larger the grain).

Work in this case is done manually, but it does not hurt to regularly moisten the contact surface with water. After roughing problem areas, it is recommended to polish the glass with a mild paste. As a rule, this is the so-called diamond paste, which actually contains diamond grains 2-3 microns in size. Polishing can be carried out both with the help of power tools and manually.

You can also pay attention to the well-known in Soviet times and the 90s, universal abrasive pastes like GOI (based on chromium oxide), Polarit (based on cerium oxide) or Crocus (based on iron oxide). They are still sold in auto parts and can be used effectively to polish damaged windshields.

Approximate price of polishing products

Below are the current price tags of some popular car windshield polishes:

  • CeriGlass paste (Car Pro) - 500 rubles. for 150 ml;
  • powder "Ftoropol" (InSafe) - 600 rubles. for 100 g;
  • pasta "GOI" - 130-160 rubles. for 100 g;

Glass, as one of the most expressive and beautiful materials, has always attracted designers and interior decorators. The glass surface has two serious drawbacks - high brittleness and hardness, so glass processing at home is always fraught with significant difficulties. However, the material is successfully cut, ground, polished and even drilled.

Glass surface treatment methods

Manual processing of glass requires the use of special techniques and technologies. Most often, a special tool is used for glass processing and precisely selected modes, overheating or uneven loading lead to cracking and destruction of the material.

For home conditions, glass processing is limited to several methods:

  • Cutting of sheet glass into rectilinear fragments;
  • Drilling holes and engraving reliefs in sheet material;
  • Matting and sandblasting of glass;
  • Glass edge processing;
  • Glass surface polishing.

For your information! In addition to mechanical, chemical polishing, grinding and engraving are also used. But the use of such methods requires the use of toxic and dangerous reagents, so it is practically not used for homework.

Manual glass cutting

At home, cutting and edge grinding operations are usually used. More sophisticated techniques are not used for two reasons. First, to obtain a high surface quality, it is required special equipment, machines for glass processing, and secondly, during mechanical peeling, grinding and drilling, a large amount of the smallest glass dust is formed, which is extremely harmful to health.

Cutting sheet glass using a diamond or a hard-alloy roller is performed for a material with a thickness of not more than 6 mm. Thicker sheets are cut to special devices and machine tools.

Cutting a glass sheet with a hand-held diamond is performed in the following sequence:

  1. The glass is laid out on a flat and clean surface, usually lined with soft wrapping paper used to collect glass fragments. The sheet should fit as closely as possible to the lining material;
  2. A steel ruler is applied to the cut line and gently, with minimal pressure, is carried out with a diamond tip in one movement, without tearing off the tool and without stopping its movement;
  3. The glass is lifted and the cut line is gently tapped on the reverse side with a rubber or wooden mallet. When tapped along the line, a large number of microscopic cracks are formed, greatly weakening the strength of the material, and as a result, the glass bursts exactly along the trajectory of the diamond.

For your information! When cutting thick sheets, do not use carbide rollers or tips, such a tool gives a large amount of rejects.

At the same time, a diamond glass cutter mounted on a ballerina can easily cut arcs, circles and even round holes in glass.

Manual grinding of glass

Cut fragments, as a rule, have sharp edges and edges that can easily injure your hand or fingers. Therefore it is necessary to process the glass edges with a machine or by smoothing on the edge circles. Most often, the device for wiping the edges is a low-speed engine with a special abrasive wheel or a wooden block on which fine sandpaper is glued.

Processing is carried out with periodic wetting of the edges with water and abrasive paste. The result is a smooth, slightly rough surface. By using diamond paste or a glass edging machine instead of an abrasive mass, absolutely smooth edges can be achieved. In a similar way, using high-speed precision rollers and diamond suspension on polishing equipment, glass and mirrors are processed.

Non-standard glass processing methods

Drilling is one of the most complex glass processing operations. For these purposes, drills with diamond and carbide tips are used. The high hardness and poor thermal conductivity of the glass surface leads to the fact that under the load of the cutting edge of the carbide tool, the drilling point instantly overheats and the glass cracks.

Drilling holes in glass sheets

Drilling at home is possible only with the help of a guide at a rotation speed of not more than 200 rpm, with drip cooling with an oil-in-water emulsion. When passing through 90% of the sheet thickness, the load on the drill and the rotational speed are reduced to a minimum so that when the tool “exits” from the hole, the glass does not break. It works on the same principle drilling equipment for glass processing.

At home, the glass surface of glass can be treated with a copper rod and an abrasive suspension prepared from the finest powder of carborundum emery for processing hard materials. If drilling with dry powder is performed, the glass sheet can be heated on a sand cushion up to 200 ° C.

In the old days, glass was successfully drilled, ground and polished using ordinary bog oak bars and rods with the addition of burnt and ground lean clay powder. Of course, such processing took a lot of time, but the percentage of marriage was minimal.

Industrial machines process and drill glass with abrasive wheels made of copper-aluminum bronzes with diamond powder deposited on the working edge. Most of the heat is efficiently removed to the coolant, so processing performance is an order of magnitude higher than homemade options.

Sandblasting and glass engraving

Often the glass surface is subjected to relief processing and matting. To remove the shine and make the material translucent, with a uniform matte surface, sandblasting of glass is used. In this case, the plane is blown with a high-speed air stream containing 10% rounded quartz sand. Ordinary washed sand is not used, as risks and scratches appear on the treated surface.

The device for sandblasting resembles a paint spray gun and is easy to make even at home. But if in the industrial version the quality of the surface to be treated is automatically controlled, then at home a certain skill and practice will be required before the glass acquires a uniform surface texture.

One of the most complex and interesting processing methods is engraving a pattern on a glass surface. Manual relief can be reproduced using an engraving machine and diamond drills. After such processing, a pattern of matte strokes appears on a transparent basis.

Conclusion

Engraving works in solid glass or thick tiles using a thermal laser look most impressive. The high energy density and the ability to penetrate to a given depth make it possible to create very beautiful spatial patterns, which are almost impossible to make in any other way. In addition, the laser beam allows you to drill, mill and even weld sheets of material, so that glass furniture and interiors will become commonplace in the near future.

If glass is cut out for doors, windows, or simply inserted into a frame with a portrait, then there is no need to process the edges of the glass. But, if they are used as shelves, doors, countertops for coffee table, as the walls of an aquarium, etc., then processing of the edges is obligatory.

Firstly, it is necessary for security, because. you can easily get hurt on sharp edges, secondly, to give the product an aesthetically attractive appearance, and thirdly, such glass processing will reduce the likelihood of cracks and chips.

The processing of glass and mirror edges is divided into two stages - grinding and polishing.

In mass production, furniture manufacturing, or commercial equipment, glass processing is carried out on special vertical machines. But, at home, you can also do these operations yourself, using available tools.

Let's take a closer look - how to do the grinding and polishing of glass with your own hands?

To do this, we need the following tools and devices: a drill or a grinder with a rotation speed regulator (we need low speed so as not to overheat the glass, 1200-1700 rpm), a special attachment with Velcro for attaching grinding wheels, the grinding wheels themselves with waterproof sandpaper of different grits.

We fix the nozzle in the drill, put the disk, first larger (100 - 200 grit) and do the grinding. First, we remove all the bumps and notches, and after that we form the edge of the profile we need.

Grinding can also be done on emery by attaching a special diamond-coated grinding wheel with a specific profile, or simply flat.

The edge of the stele is made different shapes: semicircular (pencil), trapezoidal (euro-edge), trapezoidal asymmetrical, or any other. After such processing, the side faces of the glass become slightly rough and matte. But, this is not the end.

Having processed the surface with a large disk, we put a disk with a grain size of 300 - 600 grit, and at the end we process the edges with the smallest one - 1000 - 2000 grit.

For better grinding, the surface must be wetted, it is better, of course, to do it under a thin stream of water. But, experienced craftsmen know how to do grinding well and without water.

After such processing, the side faces of the glass must be polished, after which the edges become smooth and transparent. Although, in some cases, the edges are still left unpolished, but this is individual.

The difference between polishing and glass grinding is that it is done not with abrasive discs, but with a soft felt wheel with a special paste. You can use regular GOI polishing paste.

We apply the paste on a felt circle and polish the glass edges to a shine, also using a drill with a nozzle, a grinder, or putting a felt circle on emery.

Glass is a very fragile material and is afraid of overheating, so all work must be done carefully, without haste, and preferably with gloves.

This glass grinding and polishing technology can also be used in car repairs to eliminate scratches and small chips on the glass. The requirements for transparency are higher there, so special polishing pastes are used. First, the scratch is polished with a grinding wheel, and then polished with a felt disc with paste.

The molecular structure of glass allows it cut, saw, drill, grind, glue, engrave, bend and even draw into threads!

A glass cutter is required to cut glass. More often use roller glass cutters.

A - glass cutters with such a handle were produced forty years ago. Their advantage is a heavy head, which is convenient for tapping the cut line. B and C are cheap Chinese glass cutters. Sold under the brands Jobo, Kraftool, Stayer. They are difficult to use for cutting glass due to the poor quality of the rollers and the glass cutter head. On Kraftool, the damaged teeth of the head after breaking off the glass are clearly visible. D - professional roller glass cutter Silberschnitt ("Silbershnit"). My favorite model. Versatile and reliable tool.

Professional oil glass cutter Touo TS-17 is good for curved cuts. If you need to regularly cut glass, you should not save on a glass cutter. Although professional glass cutters are not cheap, it will cost more to ruin the glass. And the most expensive part in a professional glass cutter is a roller.

The rollers are made of alloyed stainless steel. They differ in the angle of sharpening, usually 130-165 degrees. Rollers with a sharpening angle of 130 degrees are used for cutting glass with a thickness of 1 to 3 mm, and sharpened at an angle of 1 to 150 degrees - for cutting glass with a thickness of 4-10 mm. For glass thicker than 10 mm, use a glass cutter with a roller of 155-165 degrees.

Glass is cut like this

The cutting table must be level and stable. The surface is covered with a thin isol, but ideally, a thin carpet or felt is glued onto the table. It is more convenient to cut in this way, and the underside of the glass will not be scratched by the fragments that inevitably form during cutting. The glass is laid on the surface of the table, marked out, and a ruler is pressed against it.

Faithful friends of the glazier - a ruler, kerosene and a hammer

A glass cutting ruler is a ruler with a strip of thin rubber glued on the bottom so that the ruler does not move when cutting. Or is it a special ruler with suction cups embedded in it. You can also make this one yourself.

So, we draw a cutting line with a glass cutter.

Important! This line cannot be interrupted and re-drawn. It must be drawn in one pass.

Then we move the glass off the table and gently tap the cutting line with a small hammer - this is another true friend of the glazier. Next, we lay the glass with a cut line on the edge of the table and break it off by pressing it with a board using clamps. Clamps are especially important if the glass is thick.

With some skill, you can stretch the cut line with your fingers, especially if the glass is thin.

So, we have learned how to cut straight lines. And the curves? To do this, first, instead of a ruler, cut out a pattern - for example, from thick linoleum. The rest of the operations are similar.

You can even cut a circle out of glass. This will require a circular glass cutter or a round template of a suitable diameter. If there is a compass, then we fix the suction cup on the glass and draw a circle. Of course, without interrupting the cut line.

Then we draw rays from the circle to the edges of the glass.

We turn the glass over, with the handle of the glass cutter, carefully push through the cut line and the rays. If everything is done correctly, then the workpiece itself will fall apart into a circle and side fragments.

If at hand - only a pattern-pancake, then you can fix it on the glass with double-sided tape from displacement, and then also draw a cut line around it.

You can cut not only flat glass

For example, you can cut bottles. They make interesting vases or shades for lamps. To do this, they usually assemble an impromptu workbench from the base and three bars. The bottle is placed between the bars and rotated with the left hand while the glass cutter right hand draw a cutting line.

Then the cut line is tapped from the inside with a hairpin with a weighting agent and the cut off part is separated from the bottle.

If it is impossible to tap the cut line from the inside, gently warm it up with a portable gas burner. The main condition is that the bottle must be with smooth surface preferably cylindrical. Bottles of complex shape, angular for example, are more difficult to cut.

We have learned how to cut, now we need to process the cut line. Those who are engaged in stained glass work use Inland or Kristall 2000 portable diamond machines, which quickly turn even an uneven cut line.

If necessary, blunt the edges window glass, you can use a sponge with a diamond coating or a whetstone for sharpening knives, after moistening it.

If more grinding is required, then a grinding nozzle on a drill with a waterproof sandpaper.

We drill glass with our own hands

Glass often has to be drilled. For example, to fix the handle on a glass door or hang a mirror.

Drills for glass are tubular diamond-coated or carbide spear-shaped.

It is advisable to use drilling machine, because the drill is difficult to install strictly vertically, because of which the glass can burst when pressed. Place the glass on a soft lining - for example, on rubber or carpet. Drilled in a water bath. To do this, a plastic or rubber ring is attached around the drilling zone, then water is poured into it and carefully drilled. Do not press hard on the glass. First, they drill halfway on one side, then the glass is turned over, the drill and the drilling point are combined and drilled from the back side.

Engraving on glass

Drills can be used to apply a pattern to glass, trim small parts, or mark.

They are produced by Dremel, Proxhop, Bort, Caliber, Energomash and other manufacturers.

Glass bonding rules

Before gluing the glass surfaces are thoroughly degreased. Technical acetone is not suitable for this purpose, as it leaves an oily film. Use high purity acetone 04 or analytical grade, as well as special formulations Bohle for glass degreasing. Before gluing, it is recommended to heat the glass to remove traces of moisture.

Most types of glass adhesive are light-curing, that is, setting occurs under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. When gluing with superfluid compositions, the surfaces to be glued are tightly fixed to each other, then the glue is applied on the side of the joint: it will flow into the seam itself - after which the product is illuminated with ultraviolet light.

In workshops, UV lamps are used for this, and home master can get by with the sun - for example, by moving the curtains aside after fixing the parts to be glued. It usually takes one minute to complete the process. After the first ultraviolet rays hit the product, it will be impossible to fix the junction.

If the composition is not superfluid, then the surfaces to be bonded are wetted with adhesive prior to bonding. Then illuminated with ultraviolet light.

Two-component epoxy compounds are pre-mixed, and then applied to the surfaces to be bonded and tightly fixed to long time half an hour to a day. This bonding method is used for inconspicuous places.

glass coloring

The industry produces paints with good adhesion to glass.

But in the manufacture of vases or shades, it is easier to matte the surface of the glass - and then any paint from an aerosol can adheres well to it.

DIY glass polishing

But miniature surfaces are polished with drills with polishing nozzles and polishing pastes based on crocus, polyrite or zirconium oxide.

Glass processing is a very important type of operation, which occupies a significant place in the entire production of products from this material. This is due to the following.

After the cutting of the glass has been completed, its edge does not look neat. It is very sharp and may cause injury when using the product. In this regard, grinding and polishing of glass is necessary. These two operations are very significant and mandatory.

But if the glass is cut out for windows, doors, or simply inserted into a frame with a photograph, then such processing is not needed. It's just a waste of time and extra cost.

But for a glass product that will be used as doors, countertops, partitions, shelves, etc., edge processing is a mandatory operation.

Stages of grinding and polishing glass edges

The first step in edge processing is glass grinding. With its help, large irregularities, as well as sharp edges, are eliminated.

Glass edge grinding can be carried out at home. To do this, you will need a drill, a poppet nozzle and sanding paper, which can be of different grain size. This method refers only to the private processing of glass, when only a few details were cut.

In the large-scale production of glass products, special grinding machines. With their help, it is possible to process curly and straight glass edges.

Glass edge grinding on such equipment occurs with the use of special abrasive wheels or tapes of different grain sizes. Depending on which initial edge and which product you need to get at the output, the grain size of these tools is selected.

Grinding machines can be made in various configurations. Grinding can be carried out, for example, on a vertical type washer. Glass is placed on the rotating disk, during rough processing edges. With the help of a jet of water, sand or an abrasive powder specially designed for such work is supplied.

With the help of these ingredients, polishing is carried out. The edge becomes silky. And polishing on such equipment occurs with the help of special rotating brushes or ultrasound.

The edge can be of several types: semicircular (“pencil”), trapezoidal (Euro edge), asymmetrical, etc.

Grinding glass allows you to solve the most basic problem - this is the improvement of the surface of this material. This contributes not only to the growth of the “decorativeness” of the resulting product, but also to its safety for humans.

After this type of operation, the surface of the edge is matte, slightly rough and acquires a greenish tint. Small scratches and microcracks may remain on it. Yes and appearance such an edge is not very attractive.

Although in some cases this type of processing is quite enough. To eliminate all the irregularities of grinding, the second stage of edge processing is applied - polishing.

This process differs from grinding in that the edge is processed with soft fibers, and not with abrasive materials. After polishing, the edges become smoother and more transparent. And the glass itself acquires an aesthetic and unsurpassed appearance.

This operation is performed on special equipment, which performs a finer surface treatment. Such machines, depending on the thickness of the processed glass, are able to guarantee various characteristics such processing. After polishing, the edge may remain faceted or take on a more rounded shape.

whole glass products always have a polished edge, as this makes their design even brighter. Also, polishing is carried out if the glass has to undergo a tempering procedure. After all, after this, it will be impossible to carry out any actions with this material.

It is worth remembering that glass is a fragile material that is very sensitive to overheating. In this regard, all work with it must be done very carefully, without any haste.

Also, polishing should be started only when grinding has been carried out with the finest abrasive. Due to such technological process the fact that the polishing tape, due to its low abrasive characteristics, is not capable of removing large defects from the glass edge.

Thanks to the processing of the edges of the glass, it is possible to minimize the residual stress on the surface of this material. This reduces the likelihood of cracks and chips during transportation and operation of glass products. The finished product becomes much more attractive.

Grinding and polishing glass is necessary in the manufacture of furniture, the manufacture of various types of commercial equipment, stands, shop windows, racks and counters. And also in all those cases when this material is used with its visible edge.

Sanding the edges of car windshields

Nothing in this world can last forever, just like the windshield of a car. After years of operation, it becomes not so transparent. During the movement of the car, in addition to air, the smallest particles of dust, sand and even insects hit the windshield.

All this makes the glass opaque and leads to a decrease in its transparency. But these are indirect reasons. The main problem is damage to the outer surface of the windshield (scratches) wipers. Due to the wear of the wiper blades, different kinds mechanical damage.

Between them and the glass constantly gets:

  • dust;
  • sand;
  • pieces of ice (in winter period);
  • any other small particles.

They are the ones that scratch the surface of the glass. This kind of damage is very dangerous at night driving. vehicle. Light from oncoming cars is refracted in these micro-scratches. This leads to the appearance of "glare" and "flare". In addition, the stripes from the wipers make it difficult to see the road.

Of course, you can go to the service station and replace the old glass. But it is worth thinking about saving. In this case, polishing or grinding the windshield will help you. The first option is used in cases where it is necessary to eliminate minor scratches or carry out light preventive treatment.

Windshield grinding is, in principle, not hard work but it requires certain knowledge, skills and practice. During this operation, a special abrasive material, which removes the minimum layer of glass. Pieces from it can fall on a soft disk, which performs grinding and cause new damage. Therefore, grinding the windshield of a car should be carried out by specialists and at special service stations. At home, this work is not recommended, as it can damage the surface.

Car glass grinding First of all, it refers to the increase in safety while driving, and only secondarily is the appearance of the vehicle.

It is worth remembering and knowing that this type of work is not able to remove cracks on the windshield. For this, there is special equipment and its own technological process. Grinding car windows is only the final stage of eliminating chips and cracks that have arisen.

The basis of all manipulations related to the elimination of scuffs is the chemical treatment of the glass surface. There are special pastes designed for this, which almost completely eliminate these errors. After that, the windshield regains its original appearance.

Windshield grinding is based on the following basic operations:

  • Diagnostics. At this stage, the degree of damage to the windshield of the car is determined. If there are such scratches that a nail easily catches on them, then it is worth repairing them initially. It is necessary to do this, since grinding occurs with an increase in glass temperature, which can lead to the formation of a new crack from an existing one. All detected defects are indicated by a marker from the passenger compartment. This is done in order not to lose sight of them during all the work.

  • Preparatory stage. Initially, it is necessary to separate the treated area of glass with a special masking tape. Then, with the help of a special liquid, the glass is cleaned. It is necessary to remove all foreign elements that can get on the wheel during grinding and damage it and the glass surface itself. Next, the polishing paste is diluted in the proportions indicated by its manufacturer.

  • Car windshield grinding. The paste is applied to the felt circle in a small amount. Also, it is rubbed into a section of about 30 centimeters. Then, with progressive light movements, without pressure on the glass, the grinding itself is carried out. Periodically treated surface is sprayed with water. This is necessary so that the paste does not dry out, and the glass is constantly cooled. After all, this process is accompanied by heating the surface of the windshield. The grinding device tilts at a slight angle of 5 degrees to the processed plane. When moving to the next grinding area, a special overlap is made with an already polished area of 5 centimeters. This will completely cover the entire damaged area in need of polishing.

Grinding windshields lasts about 3-4 hours. It's not a fast process. After completion of all processes, the glass is carefully wiped with a special napkin and examined for the presence of matte areas. They shouldn't be. Well, if they are present, then the grinding process is repeated again.

Glass grinding under the lens

Grinding is not only windshields car. Modernization also lends itself to reflex-type headlights. This is necessary for further installation of lenses.

The corrugations on the glass of the headlights are necessary in order for the light beam to form correctly, for the light to scatter in certain directions. If you install a lens module, then the glass in front must be absolutely transparent and plane-parallel and not lead to optical distortion.

It is not always possible to purchase new clear glass for headlights for a specific car model. There is no need to despair here. Glass grinding under the lens will allow you to realize your plans.

Grinding does not lend itself to the entire surface of the glass, but only its central part with a small margin.

The following equipment is used to perform this operation:

  • grinding machine and circles to it;
  • water supply;
  • special paste;
  • felt wheel for polishing.

Grinding glass under the lens is completed by its subsequent polishing. The surface must be absolutely transparent, otherwise the installed lens module will not function correctly.

It is also worth remembering that grinding is best done on new headlights. This is due to the fact that on the old headlights there are scuffs and microdamages caused by the time of its operation. Given machining they can lead to cracking.

You can learn more about the technology of grinding and polishing car glass at the glass industry exhibition, which will be held at the beginning of this summer at the Expocentre Fairgrounds. There will also be presented high-quality equipment for the manufacture, cutting and subsequent processing of glass.

The exhibition will be located in a huge pavilion with an area of about ten thousand square meters. It will be attended by foreign companies involved in the production of glass products.
