Bonding plastic film at home. How to choose glue for polyethylene: tips and reviews

  • 12.06.2019

Polymer film is used for a variety of purposes. But, first of all, we are talking about the design of waterproofing screens for various structures.

How to connect the joints of oilcloth for a greenhouse?

And, since such a technological screen is not a “cast” part, many are interested in the question of how to glue the film so as not to lose the unique waterproofing properties of the finished polymer product at the junction?

Why is it necessary to weld and not glue the film?

The fact is that there is practically no absolutely reliable gluing of polyethylene - this material only needs to be welded! Moreover, to weld with the help of a special apparatus. And the most reliable welding method is the “hot wedge” method. Therefore, if the question arises of how to glue polyethylene to achieve maximum waterproofing, it should be remembered that such a design is much more reliable to cook than to glue!

How to solder film?

How to glue a polyethylene film is, of course, everyone decides for themselves, taking into account the specific requirements for the finished product and their own capabilities. But, if we are talking about reliable waterproofing screens - especially large industrial products - then, as a rule, there are no questions about how to glue pvc film Or how to glue polyethylene. Obviously, such screens only need to be welded using special welding machines that can be purchased on our website.

Polyethylene welding technology

Specialists are sure that in order to obtain a waterproofing screen with a reliable seam, it is necessary to use a special "hot" welding. When using it, the details of the cut made of polyethylene are literally soldered into a single canvas.

How to weld plastic film correctly?

Of course, you need to understand how to solder the film correctly - without flaws in the form of a loose seam or missed places. When asked how to weld a film in order to obtain a reliable waterproofing product, the managers working on our website will always recommend one of the welding units that will cope with the task as accurately as possible. But, before giving you recommendations on how to solder a plastic film or how to weld a plastic film, they will need to know all the conditions for the upcoming work, as well as technological and operational

How to glue plastic film? This seemingly simple question constantly puzzles many summer residents and garden lovers. After all, if you first decided to build a greenhouse for yourself, you will have two options - to purchase a ready-made one (the pleasure is not cheap) or to glue a film of the required width.

To facilitate your search, here is a quick guide on how to glue polyethylene film.

To begin with, you need to purchase polyethylene in the required quantity, while taking it with a margin, since you need to overlap. Do you have plastic wrap?

Welding of the film is carried out according to the following scheme: take the film and overlap the edges to be glued on top of each other (the width of the overlap should be equal to the width of the iron used with a margin of 5 centimeters).

Prepared paper (you can use a regular newspaper folded in half) is laid a little wider than the overlap.

We take two small segments and select the optimum temperature at which the polyethylene film will be welded using the “sticking” method

If this is not done, then when gluing large pieces of the film, it may become unusable, melting due to too high an iron temperature or an excessive exposure time.

After selecting the temperature on the table, we perform gluing, it is advisable to have two assistants at the same time, who will not only move the film to be glued evenly, but also level the finished overlap.

Note to everyone who will glue the plastic film - the paper cannot be immediately removed from the hot film, in order to avoid tears.

Let it cool down a bit and then take it off.

In conclusion, we note that the plastic film for greenhouses is glued together at home very easily.

However, if you need to cover the greenhouse big size, then look in hardware stores for a special apparatus for gluing polyethylene and it will become much easier for you to work.

More on the topic:

Welding of film panels can be done in two ways.

Film bonding method 1

Lay one sheet of film on top of the other, cover them with a newspaper or fluoroplastic film on top, then slowly run the edge of the iron, soldering iron tip or roller over the junction of the sheets, preheating it to 250 ° C.

Film gluing method 2

You can connect the edges of the panels as follows: clamp them between 2 smooth strips of metal so that the edges of the film protrude from under them by about 1 cm, and melt them with the flame of an alcohol lamp or blowtorch.

Xylene and trichlorethylene heated to 70-75°C can also be used for film bonding. At a temperature of 30 ° C, film panels can be glued together with 80% acetic acid. If you have chosen to bond the film parts with one of the above substances, use extreme caution when working with them.

The film can be glued with BF-2 or BF-4 adhesives, having previously treated the surfaces to be joined with a 25% solution of chromic anhydride. PK-5 glue is best suited for joining polyamide film panels. Be sure to iron the seam obtained after gluing with a warm iron heated to a temperature of 50 - 60 ° C.

More recently, superglue has appeared on sale, which is designed specifically for plastic film. It gives a very strong, waterproof and elastic bond. In addition, it is absolutely odorless, and the compounds are transparent and almost invisible. With one bottle of glue with a capacity of 50 ml, it is possible to glue a seam 15 - 20 m long.

Since Super Glue contains household solvents, it is recommended that you follow the same precautions when handling it as when using household chemicals. When stored in sealed packaging, the shelf life of the adhesive is not limited. If it dries, it is enough to dilute it with acetone to restore its original properties.

Superglue is also useful for repairing the finished film coating. The method of its application in this case is as follows. Using a brush or stick, apply a thin layer of adhesive around the damaged area on the outside of the film cover.

Device for welding polyethylene film

Let it dry for 2 hours. Then cut out a patch of the required size from the film, attach it to the damaged area and smooth it well. Superglue can even glue old film. However, you should know that it is best to repair the film coating in sunny weather.

If you want to sew film panels with threads, overlap them on top of each other. Stitch infrequently. To increase the strength of the seam, make a paper lining. This method of connecting film sheets is most often used if it is necessary to patch the film coating before it is stretched onto the frame or when it is already torn. stretched film. Minor damage to the film can be sealed with adhesive tape.

Polyethylene films are used for roofing hydro and vapor barrier. During the installation process, it is often necessary to connect the pieces into one panel, but adhesive tape does not always help out. It is impossible to fix the connection with ordinary silicate glue or PVA. How to glue a plastic film at home in order to get a reliable and moisture-proof and steam-proof joint? There are several effective and simple ways that do not require sophisticated equipment.

Problems when gluing polyethylene is a fairly common situation. And it's all about the characteristics of the material. It is worth understanding them - and it will be easy to avoid difficulties.

High temperature sinter two layers

Things to remember from chemistry and physics

Polyethylene is the most widely used polymer in the world. Its extraordinary popularity is explained by the excellent properties of the material - impact resistance, plasticity, low gas and water permeability. For roofs, films reinforced with mesh or fabric are used, which increases the strength of the material.

Despite the advantages, polyethylene films are very rarely glued in the industry. To understand why the connection of parts is problematic, it is enough to recall school chemistry lessons. The molecule of this polymer is a long chain of similar units -CH2-. The charges inside such a molecule are distributed evenly, it is non-polar. And the higher the polarity, the more the polymer is suitable for bonding.

This device is suitable for small parts.

Connection methods without glue and solvent

The method of gluing with its own solution, which is common for many polymers, is also not suitable - polyethylene practically does not dissolve in organic solvents. The answer to the question: how to glue a plastic film is actually very simple: it is best to use welding.

Of the many methods for welding polyethylene film, two are worth highlighting:

  1. Welding with a heated object.
  2. Open flame welding.

Both methods are equally effective, but in non-industrial conditions it is still easier and safer to use the first one. However, everyone can choose for themselves the most acceptable option, given the availability necessary tools and own skills. In any case, these methods make it possible to firmly connect the parts to each other, creating reliable building elements, agrotechnical and protective structures.

When laying the film on the roof, you can do without soldering

Preparatory stages for work

Folk wisdom says: "Measure seven times, cut once." And before starting work with polyethylene, it is necessary not only to carefully take measurements, but also to think over every detail. First of all, answer the questions:

  • What loads will the finished structure be subjected to?
  • What is the expected lifespan of it?
  • Do you need 100% hydro stability?

Perhaps, after such questions, the need to glue many parts will disappear. For example, to isolate transported goods or preserve equipment, some parts of the polyethylene film can be fixed with metal staples or twine. And to protect the building structure from moisture, it is recommended to overlap the polymer, covering individual parts.

But when there is a question of how to glue a film for a greenhouse, reliability should not be neglected. After all, such a design, as a rule, should serve for a long time, perfectly protecting plants from all kinds of weather surprises. Connection with staples and strong ropes in this case will not work, and welding (any of its proposed types) will ideal option.

Hot Welding Instructions

This method can be called the most simple, effective and safe at the same time, especially when it comes to welding at home. An ordinary iron can be found in every home, and the seams created with the help of heated objects are usually the most even and accurate.

Universal roller for gluing polyethylene

The most convenient tool for this method can be a roller with a built-in electric heater. This tool is ideal when you need to do a lot of work - for example, in large agro-industrial enterprises. As a rule, such devices have to be made independently. And in order for them to work well, you must at least be qualified as an electrician.

However, when it comes to how to glue plastic film for a greenhouse at home, the roller method is not very suitable. After all, not everyone has the time, patience and necessary skills to create such a device, especially when the need for welding rarely arises. Then it is worth resorting to the help of improvised means. And in everyday life appliances that can be heated up to desired temperature- approximately 250 ° C - a lot.

How to work with an electric iron and analogues

To glue polyethylene with an iron, you just need to lay out the edges of the material on a wooden lath, and then iron the parts through a newspaper or fluoroplastic film folded in half. By the way, these same safety elements will not be superfluous when gluing with other hot objects. Depending on the area of the surface to be joined, a narrow edge, spout or flat iron can be used. BUT wooden lath will help create a smooth and neat connection.

What temperature should the iron be heated to? Unfortunately, there are no clear recommendations on this issue, and 250 ° C is rather a relative indicator. The melting temperature depends primarily on the brand of polyethylene. Therefore, in the process of work, you need to be very careful. If the material does not connect and does not change at all, it means that the iron needs to be heated more strongly. If the seam is barely noticeable, and the film near it has lost strength, the temperature is already too high.

There is always a risk of burning through the film. To avoid this, you need to reduce the contact of the iron and the parts to be glued to one second. To prevent polyethylene from sticking to the iron, instead of a newspaper, you can cover the surface of the polymer with thin cellophane before work. To check how effective polyethylene soldering is, you need to pull the connected parts in different directions. If the seam has come apart, the process will have to be started again.

Soldering iron with a special nozzle

If the iron method is not suitable for some reason, other tools can be used. For example, a hot knife and a soldering iron tip will make it possible to create even and thin seam lines. Some craftsmen manage to connect polyethylene parts with a red-hot needle. However, you can use other improvised means. Auxiliary tools are the same as when connecting with an iron - a wooden frame, newspaper or cellophane.

Homemade soldering iron for gluing polyethylene

Film welding with an open flame

You will need:

  • one of the possible devices with an open fire: a gas burner, a spirit lamp, blowtorch, match, torch;
  • bars made of ceramic or metal.

First, the edges of the film are fixed with bars so that a narrow strip of polyethylene a few millimeters thick is visible at the welding site. The bars should be made of metal or ceramic, but in no case of wood - after all, their function is not only to keep the polyethylene immobile, but also to remove some of the heat so that the connected parts do not burn out.

After that, with the tool chosen for welding, you need to draw a conditional line along the edge of the polyethylene parts. As a result, at the place of contact of the films with an open fire, a dense connecting roller should form. In order for the welding process to be successful, it is advisable to first, empirically, select the optimal speed of the tool. It depends on the device used, and on the brand of polyethylene.

On the roof it is better to work with the device

Is it possible to glue the film with glue

Some craftsmen tried to use BF-4 or BF-2 tools to glue plastic wrap at home. After processing the parts with a 25% solution of chromic anhydride, they applied glue to the surface, but subsequently the seams on the polyethylene film still had to be treated with an iron heated to 50-60 ° C. As a result, this method differed little from the connection with hot objects, even if the temperature was much lower.

Using Super Glue: A State of the Art Approach

The roughness of the surface contributes to the successful connection of parts with glue. But the properties of the polymer in question are the opposite - it is distinguished by its ideal smoothness. And yet, how to glue a plastic film for a greenhouse using only one of the ordinary factory adhesives? Until recently, it was believed that this was impossible.

Recently, however, varieties of superglues specifically designed to work with plastic film have appeared on the market. Among the advantages of such products:

  • lack of smell;
  • water resistance;
  • elasticity;
  • connection strength.

When dry, they can be thinned with acetone. However, they must be used with caution, avoid contact with the skin and household surfaces, because the composition contains potent solvents.

Noteworthy are products based on ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate, which were developed by chemist Harry Coover during military experiments in the United States back in the middle of the last century. Such types of glue are now available due to mass production, create fairly strong bonds, and are also suitable for working with rubber and metal.

Is the choice of glue for joining parts justified?

Is it worth using glue for polyethylene at home, including for roofing? One of the main problems when used in everyday life can be its toxicity. In addition, not all products on the market are of sufficient quality. And it is simply impossible to check the effectiveness of the glue when buying. At the same time, when using one of the types of welding, there are more chances to get an excellent result.

Using glue for polyethylene

As you can see, there are many ways to glue a plastic film at home, and everyone can choose the most acceptable for themselves. In addition, there is always the opportunity to turn to professionals who will not only give useful advice but can also be of practical help.

You will need

  • - double sided tape;
  • - soldering iron or iron;
  • - two metal plates;
  • - cotton fabric;
  • - chromic anhydride or chromium peak;
  • - BF-2 glue (phenolic butyral);
  • - glue for polyethylene;
  • - facilities personal protection.

Instruction

Connect the joints of the plastic film with double-sided tape. This is the simplest and fast way attach parts from this material to each other. However, do not rely on the glued parts to withstand a large load.

Weld polyethylene - perhaps this is the most common way to connect parts from a film. It requires caution, because during heat treatment you risk ruining the material. Three proven methods can be recommended: - Place both sides of the polyethylene to be glued between two metal plates so that the edges of both parts protrude slightly. Run a soldering iron over them - the metal will not curl. Also, if necessary, you can make a polyethylene patch by thermally treating the edges of the parts to be welded; - use an iron heated to the hottest temperature. In this case, the parts should be overlapped (at least 1-1.5 cm). Lay even stripes under the wrong layer of the film and on top and iron them; - You can connect polyethylene parts by dripping melted plastic onto their joint. So you can repair not only the film, but also other plastic items.

Find the right adhesive for plastics. The vast majority of adhesives will not work for you. Some mixtures can be used, but only after the surface of the plastic has been prepared - it should become more active. For this you will have to "mini". So, after applying a solution of chromic anhydride (25%) on polyethylene, you can use BF-2 glue. You can get the specified chromium preparation in stores chemicals or from familiar chemists. You can replace it with a chrome peak.

Try a special adhesive for polyethylene, such as DP 8005 (structural adhesive for plastics) or WEICON Easy-Mix PE-PP (structural adhesive for polyethylene and ). The peculiarity of such compositions is that no pre-treatment of the material is needed. The mixture changes the structure of the polyethylene surface, after which it sticks together normally.

note

It is necessary to work with chemicals when repairing polyethylene extremely carefully - on outdoors and with personal protective equipment (gloves, overalls, mask and goggles). Chromium preparations are poisonous, they leave indelible stains on clothes. If you do not have conditions for working with chemicals, it is better not to risk it and get by with more gentle methods.

To pack a gift in an original way, it is absolutely not necessary to buy a standard gift box. package. It is better to make a pretty container for a gift yourself. Such packaging will not only be unique, but will also inform the hero of the occasion about how much he is appreciated.

You will need

  • -paper;
  • -pencil;
  • -stationery knife;
  • - stationery glue;
  • -rope.

Instruction

First, choose the color and pattern that will be on. This will depend on the occasion for which the present is presented. For example, a drawing of flowers is suitable, you can choose an image and rings, for Defender of the Fatherland Day - and stars. Decorate the sheet from which you will make the package with a pattern using or stick an appliqué. On the other hand, products are drawn.

Draw the diagram as follows: mark the width of the package, its length, bottom, fold lines. Cut the corners of the bottom on both sides, then to fold the craft. A detailed diagram can be seen in the picture.

Take a special clerical knife and cut off the future product along the edges. Place something hard underneath to avoid scratching the table. Where the fold lines are indicated on the diagram, push with the other side of the knife to make it easier to bend. Carefully fold the craft along all these lines.

Glue the cut out layout with any clerical glue. When the bag is dry, punch holes with a knife or hole punch. On each side, you need to punch two holes, adhering to symmetry. To make the holes stronger, glue with inside products pieces thick paper.

Take ropes that match in color to the main range. Tie a knot on the rope, thread it into the hole so that the end of the lace enters from front side inside and then make a second knot to secure the rope. Insert the handles into the rest of the holes in the same way. The package is complete. Decorate it further own discretion- Glue foil appliqués, sprinkle with glitter or attach other details for decoration. You can also color the package or write on it the name of the person to whom it is intended, or a wish for the hero of the occasion.

During the construction of greenhouses, waterproofing and production of other construction works the craftsman may need a reliable polyethylene adhesive that will create a strong and airtight seam. Designs and operating conditions are different, and each case has its own connection requirements. Pipes and fittings for them are made of polymer. Usually, when installing sanitary ware, you can not glue the parts together, but use special connecting parts. When installing waterproofing and many other works, it is necessary to firmly and hermetically fix the materials together.

Technical characteristics and requirements for the adhesive composition

Polyethylene fell in love with builders for its unique properties: the polymer is completely impervious to moisture and can be used for waterproofing, resistant to chemical attack, aggressive moisture will not disturb its structure. Sometimes this material is used for electrical insulation and even for protection against certain types of radioactive radiation.

Polyethylene is good for everyone, only one of its drawbacks is not liked by the craftsmen - it is very difficult to glue the film to another surface. To understand how to choose the right bonding composition, you need to understand what happens to the materials during the bonding process. Sometimes substances are used for this work that destroy the structure of the material. The surface becomes sticky and firmly connected to the other structure. Approximately the same thing happens when welding 2 pieces of polymer, sealing packages. But sometimes it is necessary that the material does not collapse, remains in its original form. In this case, the adhesive molecules, due to the potential difference, must firmly attach to the molecules of the film and material of a different design.

Bonding requirements may vary depending on the polymer application. Strength and durability are essential for any job. Environmental performance are not of great importance for street structures, but are important for decoration internal surfaces premises. If waterproofing a shower or bath is carried out, it is necessary that the composition does not collapse and does not emit harmful substances under the influence of hot steam. The connection in places subject to sudden changes in temperature must be flexible enough so that the thermal expansion of the materials does not violate the tightness.

Which method is better?

Polyethylene molecules do not have a high electrical potential, so it is very difficult to find a substance that adheres well to the polymer. For the connection, not only chemical compositions are used, depending on the type and purpose of the structures, other methods can be used.

Masters have found several ways to create strong connection.

  • Welding is used when gluing 2 polymer structures, especially for polyethylene foam.
  • Double-sided tape will help fasten the plastic film together or attach it to structures made of some other materials, but such a connection does not withstand heavy loads.
  • Special glue.

In stores, you can see many ready-made materials, on the packaging of which it is written that they are suitable for gluing polyethylene. Please note that the composition must necessarily include methyl acrylate. This component softens the polymer, which is especially important when working with a thick film. It may also contain xylene and chromic anhydride. It is convenient to work with such glue, it is ready for use and does not require additional surface treatment. The only negative is that the vapors are very toxic, you need to work with good ventilation or in a respirator.

There are preparations in the form of a thick paste, which must first be mixed with the solvent included in the kit. It is more difficult to use such glue, the working solution dries very quickly. If you are inexperienced, prepare the glue in small batches. Epoxy resin has similar qualities, which can be used to stick foamed and ordinary polyethylene.

Reliable manufacturers and brands

In order for the connection to be reliable and durable, you need to use a good adhesive. Firms that value their reputation do everything possible to make it convenient for the master to work with their products. If you do not know what to prefer, pay attention to appearance goods. A self-respecting manufacturer will never pack material in a box that breaks at the first touch, will not stick a nondescript quickly fading label with blurry text and an incomprehensible pattern on the container. Look at the instructions. It should be detailed and written in understandable language.

For gluing polyethylene, there is a special adhesive Easy-Mix PE-PP from Weicon. It contains microscopic glass balls, giving additional strength to the seam. The composition hardens very quickly, you should have time to do all the work in 3 minutes. If you do not find such a brand, you can use standard glue for plastic, but test it on a small area first. In order for the surface to enter into a strong bond with the adhesive, treat it with chromic anhydride. It is recommended to work at room temperature, the seam will gain full strength after 6 hours.

If you didn’t pick up anything suitable in the store, you can glue polyethylene epoxy resin. With this option, the surface needs careful preparation. Rub the film fine sandpaper to make the surface smooth. Degrease, cover with an oxidizing agent and dry the gluing area. Spread both surfaces, firmly press them together and leave to harden for a day.

Application of glue

Each brand of glue requires its own approach, all the intricacies of the work are described in the instructions for use. good manufacturer will describe in detail how to prepare the surfaces, apply the composition and make a good seam.

Please read the manual carefully before purchasing a polyethylene adhesive. There should be the following information:

  • how to prepare the gluing site;
  • whether it is necessary to withstand some time after applying the composition;
  • holding time - how long the seam should be in a tightly pressed state;
  • drying time - after how many hours the product will acquire the desired strength and will be ready for use.

If the store does not have the right product, the builder faces the question: how to glue the polyethylene? Masters adapted to use other compositions. Sometimes surfaces need to be roughened or treated with chemicals. Crushed chalk or cement is added to acrylate glue, which increases the strength of the joint.

Manufacturer's recommendations vary. Sometimes surfaces need to be specially prepared. Some compositions after application must be kept for several minutes, then combined. When using other grades, the materials must be firmly pressed immediately after applying the composition. Read the instructions, everything is written there.

So, polymer film is an excellent material for the construction of greenhouses or insulation work. The polymer has one drawback: it is very difficult to choose a composition for gluing it. If you get down to work, think: do you definitely need glue for polyethylene? Sometimes it is more convenient to use welding or double-sided tape. If you want to do such a difficult task as gluing polyethylene, first practice in small areas that do not require special strength and tightness. It is impossible to learn to do anything solely from books and articles, get to work, do not be afraid to experiment. It will not take long, you will get acquainted with the new material, learn its features, and very soon share with us your secrets of processing a capricious polymer.

Polyethylene is an unpretentious and inexpensive material, therefore it is actively used in everyday life and in some cases is indispensable. Sometimes there are situations in which it is necessary to glue the material, for example, when building a greenhouse. Not all formulations are effective in this case, you will need to use a special adhesive for polyethylene, which has excellent adhesive properties.

Technical characteristics of polyethylene

Polyethylene film is used as a heater, packaging material, electrical insulator. It can reliably protect against moisture and absorb neutrons, which are a kind of radioactive radiation. Foamed polyethylene, which is otherwise called isolon or polyfol, is used to insulate a home - they paste over the walls.

The question of how to glue polyethylene arises quite often. The usual composition for these purposes is not suitable, since the material has a chemical inertness. You need a special adhesive for polyethylene.

Polyethylene bonding is an electrical and chemical based process. The adhesive composition must adhere well to the surface of the film, and after hardening, securely adhere the surfaces to each other.

There are two ways to firmly glue polyethylene:

  1. High temperature welding (iron).
  2. The use of adhesives.

Types of glue and their manufacturers

The vast majority of adhesive compositions practically do not stick to polyethylene, simply squeezing out from the contact area of the surfaces. But still there are materials that can cope with such a difficult task.

The most popular types of adhesive that can be used for polyethylene are:

  • BF-2, BF-4;
  • two-component acrylate;
  • epoxy.

Butyralphenol glue (abbreviated as BF) is produced in Russia, the manufacturer is CJSC "Petrohim" in the city of St. Petersburg. The adhesive is a viscous, thick brown or reddish-brown liquid that does not rot or corrode.

Suitable for bonding metal, plastic, ceramics and wood, used in restoration work. Glue cannot be used for dishes, as it contains toxic aldehydes and phenol. BF-2 is universal, chemically inert and moisture resistant.

In terms of chemical resistance, it practically does not differ from BF-2, but its scope is slightly different. BF-4 is commonly used for bonding elastic materials that are subject to vibration and bending. For example, leather, wood, plexiglass, textolite, metals and alloys.

The two-component acrylate adhesive is highly durable, transparent and does not harden very quickly (in 4 minutes), which allows you not to rush too much when working. Excellent adhesion to metal and plexiglass.

Epoxy adhesive "Contact" transparent produced by OOO "ROSEL", St. Petersburg based on polyepoxy resin and hardener. It is used for the repair of products made of fiberglass, porcelain, wood, faience, glass, metal and various alloys. The composition perfectly fills cracks, voids and gaps, restores the shape and volume of objects. The seam is characterized by resistance to gasoline, oil, water.

Which is better

Among all the compounds that can glue a plastic film, the leading position is occupied by gluedesigned specifically for materials with poor adhesion. This is an acrylate adhesive with filler. It contains very small glass beads that do not allow the composition to slip out of the place of gluing, they form a gap of optimal thickness.

For foamed polyethylene, ruler glue is perfect KLEYBERG 152-1 due to its unique composition and wide range of uses.

Application

Before using the composition, thoroughly degrease and dry the surfaces. You can apply glue only from the mixer, which is included in the package. The maximum mechanical strength of the seam for polyethylene occurs after 4 or 5 hours. Optimal for operation is the air temperature from +21 to +23˚ С.

Advice
In a liquid state, the adhesive is valid for no longer than three minutes, so join the surfaces immediately after applying the composition.

It is not intended for gluing polyethylene surfaces, but the phenol-formaldehyde resin included in its composition has excellent adhesion to such material.

Application of epoxy glue:

  1. Rub the areas to be glued sandpaper, degrease and dry.
  2. Treat surfaces with chromic anhydride (15-20% concentration solution) or potassium bichromate (20-30%). It is necessary to work with them with extreme caution, since these substances are very caustic and are dangerous carcinogens.
  3. Dry surfaces after treatment.
  4. Prepare the epoxy according to package instructions.
  5. Apply the adhesive composition on both surfaces in the thinnest layer and immediately dock them.
  6. Leave for several hours, and preferably for a whole day at a temperature of +30 to +45˚ C, so that the seam finally hardens.

Advice
Chromic anhydride and potassium dichromate can be replaced with a strong solution of potassium permanganate, which is also a strong oxidizing agent. It is no less effective, but it is safer, although it can also leave a chemical burn.

  1. If very high requirements are imposed on the strength of the formed seam, then the best way to glue polyethylene is welding. The seam will be strong if it is not allowed to cool abruptly.

Advice

The best option for gluing polyethylene is welding, as the result is a strong, reliable seam. It is not always advisable to use adhesive compositions, this is due to the fact that polyethylene is a chemically inert material with weak adhesive properties.
