Making scabbards from leather. Walkthrough

  • 29.08.2019

Every self-respecting hunter keeps his knife in a sheath. And some even have several protective covers. Moreover, most people prefer to make a sheath for a knife with their own hands. After all, to perform this simple product is quite simple, and independent production will give you the opportunity to make it convenient and to your taste. Despite the fact that now you can choose any material for this, real hunters do not change traditions - they make scabbards from leather or wood.

Leather sheath: brief instructions

Do-it-yourself leather sheath for a knife begins to be made from a template.

  • Take a piece of paper, fold it in half and place a knife on it.
  • Circle it along the contour, leaving an allowance for a seam 8–10 cm wide on the side of the blade.
  • Cut out the drawn template in such a way as to duplicate only the outline of the blade, and leave the outline of the handle alone. The whole point is that in real life this circuit will play the role of a loop for fastening with a half ring. It is important to take into account that in the future the width of the “handle” coincides with the half ring that you prepare.
  • Now put the finished template on a piece of leather. Please note that at the junction of the belt and the scabbard, it should be about 3 cm narrower than the fastening length, and “ears” should be left along the edges of the scabbard. They will be the place for the button after the pattern is folded in half. Moreover, their size should be such that 2 mm of skin is left around the button.
  • Provide two holes for inside corners. Place them in the place where the wide part of the pattern (under the scabbard) is combined with the narrow part (under the handle). This is done so that during operation the skin does not tear at the corners.

How to make a knife sheath with your own hands from leather? At first glance, everything is clear. But, nevertheless, in this case there are subtleties that will help to do it as best as possible.

Those who are familiar with the manufacture of scabbards firsthand recommend:

  • Complete the leather scabbard with an insert. This is what plastic is for. To fold it in half, it is better to heat the fold line. After it is folded, both halves are made symmetrical with a file, repeating the shape of a knife blade.
  • In order for the sheath to take the shape of a knife, the cut skin is moistened for 20 minutes in warm water. After it softens, it is wrapped around a knife. It must first be wrapped in cellophane. The skin is fixed with clothespins and left for a day.
  • During this time, you can make a suspension loop, and after the clothespins are removed from the sheath, glue it to the right place and then flash it.
  • In order for the sheath for the knife to be stitched with high quality with your own hands, holes are marked along the seam line every 3-5 mm and drilled. It is necessary to sew the sheath with two needles, one of which is with a single thread, and the other with a double thread.
  • After everything is stitched, the sheath should be soaked again in warm water for 10 minutes, insert a knife wrapped in cellophane into them and leave for a day.
  • When the scabbard is dry, it should be treated with shoe wax or shoe polish.

Wooden scabbard

Some hunters find wooden scabbards to be more comfortable than leather ones. They are especially popular in Siberia and the Urals. Their simple and robust construction allows you to quickly remove and insert the knife without unfastening the clasps. And you can do it with gloves. Such scabbards cannot be pierced in a hurry with an unsuccessful knife hit.

Due to the fact that the selection is made in the form of a funnel, which evenly narrows from the mouth to the tip of the blade, the handle is tightly fixed in the sheath, actually wedging there. To get the knife, you just need to grab the handle tightly and squeeze your fingers tightly. From such an effort, he literally jumps out of the scabbard. Yes, and you can make a wooden sheath for a knife with your own hands very beautifully.

Making scabbards using Ural-Siberian technology

The process of manufacturing wooden scabbards takes place in several stages:

  • pick up small boards (2 pcs.), The vertical size of which will correspond to the length of the knife, and the horizontal size is equal to two thicknesses of its handle;
  • carefully process the boards, achieving a tight fit to each other;
  • place a knife on each of them and circle its outline;
  • on the end part from the side of the handle, mark the sampling depth for it;
  • wood should be selected along the contour, the finished sample should take the form of a funnel, evenly tapering from the mouth of the scabbard to the tip of the blade;
  • provide a small gap between the sheath and the blade (3-4 mm).

If you were unable to perfectly fit the mouth to the handle, do not despair. From the inside, on the mouth, glue a strip of fabric, after soaking it with epoxy. Wrap the knife with polyethylene and press the fabric well against the mouth of the sheath.

The final stage of processing the scabbard

After the selection is made and the mouth is fitted to the handle, the manufacture of the sheath for the knife with your own hands enters the final stage:

  • chop off the outside of the scabbard, leaving a wall thickness of about 5 mm;
  • next to the mouth, leave a side with a section of 5x5 mm in order to further fix the suspension loops on it;
  • to increase the strength of the scabbard, wrap the place under the side with several layers of nylon thread, then impregnating it with epoxy;
  • in the lower part of the scabbard (near the tip), make several holes and pull the same thread through them to reinforce the product;
  • at your discretion, make a ventilation hole at the bottom (it may not be);
  • now glue the prepared parts of the scabbard;
  • after the glue dries, sand the surface in a way convenient for you and saturate with drying oil.

Additional elements and scabbard design

So, do-it-yourself knife sheaths are completely made and can be used for their intended purpose. In addition to them, a suspension or belt loop is sewn from leather. Some for greater strength fit such a wooden case with leather, but this, so to speak, is not for everyone.

The scabbard can be left as it is, or you can use different finishes - burning, wood carving or inlay. It all depends on your taste.

Now that you have become familiar with the manufacturing technology, how to make a sheath for a knife with your own hands is no longer a question for you, but a reason to get down to business.

If you are the proud owner of a license to carry a knife, a sheath is a must for you. If you don't have them, you can make them yourself.

    Show all

    How to make a sheath for a hunting knife?

    Usually Hunter knives make out damascus steel, so the scabbard must be reliable and strong.

    First you need to make a sketch on paper. To do this, lay the knife on paper and outline its contours with a pencil.

    Then bend the sheet along the back side of the drawing and cut out the layout along the contour. This is what the end result will be.

    Now take a piece of leather and attach a knife blank to it, while the sheath will fit exactly in size. On the skin, draw the same product, only with a margin of one centimeter on each side. What kind of leather can be used? In this example, a chrome-tanned saddle cloth three millimeters thick was used.

    Don't forget that you must also cut out a two and a half centimeter wide hanger and a one centimeter wide insert.

    The suspension must be made seamless. With any available tool, make holes in it as shown in the figure below.

    Cut off the excess and thread the straps through the holes.

    In a piece of a knife pattern, the sheath must be equipped with a suspension. To do this, mark and punch three holes.

    The width of the straps should be slightly larger than the size of the holes by about two millimeters.

    Thread the hangers through the holes.

    Thus, you managed to make a suspension without seams.

    To continue working on the craft for the knife, you scrape the sheath at the place where the skin is bent. After such processing, you can easily fold the workpiece in the center.

    Now the product needs to be glued.

    You can use any kind of glue that sticks to the skin.

    You can fasten the edges with stationery clothespins. Wait a while for the glue to set. To continue to make products for the knife, the sheath must be completely dry.

    After complete drying, cut off the irregularities along the edges with a knife.

    Using grinding machine, smooth uneven ends.

    Now you need to make a mixture with which you will impregnate the product. To do this, you need to take two measures of vodka and one measure of PVA glue. Stir them together so that the vodka and glue are completely mixed together.

    Using a brush, apply the mixture to the craft in several layers.

    This impregnation dries in fifteen minutes.

    While the craft is not yet dry, mark the seam lines. This can be done using a fork.

    She also marks the step of the seams.

    Using a one-millimeter drill bit and a drill, drill holes for the seams with front side. In this case, the drill must be kept exclusively in a vertical position.

    Now cut a groove, connecting all the holes. In this case, this was done using a special Chinese tool.

    Now you can paint the craft for the knife. The scabbard can, for example, be stained.

    Cover with stain several times to make the color darker.

    Once the scabbard is dry, sand it down. sandpaper, increasing the size. First, use one hundred and eightieth size, then two hundred and fortieth and then three hundred and twentieth. At the end, polish with a six hundredth.

    Sew the product along the holes using a waxed thread in two needles, the type of seam is saddle.

    Now you need to soak the knife sheath with shoe wax.

    Everything is ready!

    Sheath for camping knife

    When you go out into nature or for a longer vacation, for example, by the sea, you always take with you such a necessary and indispensable item as a knife. So that he does not tear the fabric or the walls of the bag, his blade is wrapped with a rag or newspaper. However, you can do it easier - make a sheath for it, and then you will no longer have such a problem. Below we will describe and show how to make a scabbard.

    What materials will be needed

    • Cotton fabric, which must first be impregnated with resin.
    • A piece of hard leather of good quality.
    • Strong needle and thread made of nylon.
    • Clothespins stationery.
    • Awl.
    • Pliers.
    • Drill.
    • Thin drill.
    • Calipers.
    • Well sharpened knife.
    • Well sharpened cutter.
    • A piece of strong wire.
    • Shoe cream for polishing crafts.

    How to do?

    First you need to make a solid tab, using cotton fabric for this. Cover the tip of the knife with paraffin and form a tab on it.

    Now cut out a piece of skin right size and wet it thoroughly. Then put the tab on the knife and place it in the center of the cut piece of leather.

    Wrap the knife around this piece and fix the ends with stationery clothespins along the seam. Wait until the skin is completely dry.

    After complete drying, remove the clothespins.

    Now the product can begin to flash. To do this, use an awl to make two holes where the bend begins. Thread the thread from both sides into the holes, as a result you will get one stitch.

    Push the thread into the same holes in reverse order, you get the second stitch.

    With an awl, mark the places where the rest of the holes will be. Make sure they are evenly spaced.

    Using a drill and a thin drill, drill holes.

    Continue to flash the product. If the needle comes out tight, help it out with pliers.

    Cut off the ends of the threads and melt them over the fire. The hardest part is over.

    With a knife, cut off the excess skin, leaving a little for the stock.

    Using an abrasive skin, process the cut line.

    Now make a pendant for the scabbard. Take a piece of leather and cut out a U-shaped figure from it. Cut small holes in the top of the workpiece with a knife.

    Thread the ponytails through the holes at the top.

    Now you pull out the knife from the craft, and instead of it you insert a wooden stick of the same size. Now mark the places where the mounting holes will be.

    Using cutters, make holes according to the marks.

    Thread the ends of the suspension into the holes as in the photo below.

    Almost everything is ready, there are a couple of steps left.

    Customize the size of the scabbard. To do this, moisten the knife well and insert it into the craft. Using wire, tighten tightly.

    Wait until the skin is completely dry and remove the wire.

    Now it remains only to cover the craft with shoe cream. In this case, the knife must be inserted into the sheath, and its handle must be wrapped in a bag.

    Third option

    In order to make a case of this type, you will need the following materials and tools:

    • Soft skin of the required size.
    • Sheet of cardboard.
    • Simple pencil.
    • Scissors.
    • Cutter.
    • Scotch tape.
    • Food film.
    • Kitchen towel.
    • Hot water in a pot.
    • Clamps.
    • Strong needle.
    • Waxed thread.

    How to do?

    First, draw a template.

    To do this, lay the knife on the cardboard and circle its contours using a pencil. It is not necessary to circle butt, indent the contours by five millimeters. This will come in handy if the skin is thick. Now draw the other half mirror to the first. Draw the edge of one drawn half, it will be equal to the length of the handle. This is necessary so that later you can form a loop for closing the scabbard.

    Now cut out the template along the drawn contours.

    With the reverse side of the blade, you determine the exact line for bending the workpiece.

    Fold the layout, glue it with adhesive tape and try on the knife. This is necessary in order to be able to adjust the dimensions. Do not forget that the cardboard is much thinner than the thin look skin. Make sure that the knife easily enters the workpiece.

    Expand the craft and transfer its contours to a piece of leather on the side where the suede is. For this purpose, you can use a pencil. Using a cutter, cut out the shape we need.

    Wrap the knife with cling film.

    Heat water in a saucepan and lower part of the skin into it as shown in the figure. This will make the skin soft.

    Dry a piece of wet leather using a towel, and then wrap it around the blade and fasten the ends with clothespins. Wait for the piece to dry. While the skin dries, periodically checking that it is in the desired shape. If anything, adjust the product with your fingers, stretching where necessary.

    Once everything is completely dry, remove the clothespins.

    Cut off excess or protruding pieces of skin using a cutter. Then you cut out a thin recess with it where the seam will pass.

    Mark the places where there will be holes for the stitches. There should be a distance of no more than five millimeters between the points. Make indentations at each point using an awl or other sharp object.

    Sew the other end of the strap to the opposite side of the scabbard using a needle and waxed thread. Then sew the last seam.

    Everything is ready!

A knife is an indispensable attribute for every hunter, fisherman, tourist and mushroom picker. Therefore, many are interested in how to make a sheath for a knife - the tool must be securely fixed in order to reduce the risk of losing it, but at the same time, it should take a few moments to remove it. Experienced craftsmen can make scabbards from birch bark, leather, plastic, wood and other materials. We will tell you in more detail how to make a sheath for a knife with your own hands.

Leather is one of the most sought-after materials in the manufacture of classic scabbards. It is the easiest to work with, so even beginners usually have no problems making leather sheaths with their own hands. You can easily adjust the sheath to a specific tool, providing a secure fit.

Before starting work, you need to make sure that the following tools and materials are at hand:

  • a sheet of A4 paper;
  • high-quality, well-dressed leather;
  • strong threads or thin cord;
  • glue for genuine leather, retaining elasticity after drying;
  • stationery cutter and scissors;
  • scotch;
  • awl for sewing (with a hook);
  • ruler;
  • pencil;
  • medium grit sandpaper.

Now, let's get to work:

  1. Attach the knife blade to the paper and circle with a pencil - with a margin of 2-3 millimeters on each side (adjustment for the thickness of the knife).
  2. Re-attach the knife to the paper and now circle the entire knife, and not just the blade.
  3. Cut out both "blanks" and glue with tape - check if the knife fits into the paper sheath. If yes, go to the next paragraph. If not, do the previous steps again, making the necessary adjustments.
  4. Separate the "blanks" and attach them to the skin, then circle and cut.
  5. Drop the short form into hot water(not boiling!) and hold for 5-7 minutes - the skin will become soft and supple. Press it to the blade of the knife and part of the handle, then fix it with a cord or clothespins. It must dry and take on a suitable shape - this usually takes several hours or even all night.
  6. Make holes in the finished workpiece with an awl.
  7. Attach the workpiece to the second one and use a pencil to mark points through the holes - make holes here as well.
  8. Fold the protruding part on a long blank in half, under the belt, and sew to form a loop. You can make it wide or narrow - to your taste.
  9. Carefully sew two blanks.
  10. Sand the outer seam with sandpaper to eliminate any roughness and burrs.

The simplest leather sheath is ready! You can rightfully be proud of them, as well as the fact that you are able to make a sheath for a knife with your own hands.

You will need the following tools and materials:

  • two planks of a suitable size for a knife;
  • high-quality glue (suitable "Moment");
  • jigsaw;
  • small chisel;
  • clothespins;
  • thin leather or suede.

Stock up on everything you need, start working:

  1. Attach the knife to the boards and circle with an indent of about 5-7 mm on each side.
  2. Saw off the excess, process the outer part.
  3. Attach the blade to the boards from the inside and circle with an indent of 1-1.5 mm on each side.
  4. Using a chisel, remove the wood to a depth of 2/3 of the thickness of the knife.
  5. Cut out pieces of leather or suede to fit the shape and glue into the recesses on the scabbard.
  6. Lubricate both parts of the scabbard with Moment glue around the perimeter. Let the glue set for 5-7 minutes, then tightly, but carefully so that the tree does not crack, press against each other and fix with clothespins or a cord for a day.

The wooden sheath for the knife is ready! If desired, they can be sheathed on the outside with leather - as described in the paragraph on the manufacture of leather scabbards - in order to be able to wear them on a belt. In addition, you can apply a pattern to the wooden scabbard - carving or a regular marker, oil paints. The only thing that can limit you here is your own fantasy.

How to make a plastic scabbard

It is relatively easy to make a plastic sheath for a knife with your own hands - it is easier than wooden ones. But for this you need to have certain tools. For work you need:

  • drill;
  • saw;
  • plastic pipe;
  • riveter with rivets;
  • sandpaper;
  • fasteners for a belt (you can use just a narrow strip of leather);
  • construction dryer.

Such a set is not in every household. But if everything you need is at hand, you can start making a sheath for a knife.

  1. Saw off a piece plastic pipe- the length should be 1-2 centimeters longer than the knife blade and the part of the handle that you plan to “drown” in the sheath.
  2. Cut the pipe lengthwise.
  3. Warm up the workpiece thoroughly with a building hair dryer set to 400 degrees. Don't forget to use protective gloves to avoid serious burns.
  4. When the plastic warms up, becomes soft and pliable, insert a knife into it, exactly as far as it should go when carrying, and crimp the pipe, giving it a suitable shape.
  5. Let the plastic cool and harden.
  6. Cut off the excess - in length and width. With a pencil, mark the places where the rivets will be inserted - the optimal distance is 1-2 centimeters.
  7. Carefully drill the marked places with a thin drill. If you want a carrying loop on your belt, fold a piece of leather in half and also poke a couple of holes in it to attach to the scabbard with rivets.
  8. Insert bartacks into the holes and use a riveter to secure them.
  9. It remains only to paint the scabbard in the appropriate color. Of course, black looks the most elegant and strict. But bright colors - red, orange, blue - are more noticeable. If suddenly you lose a knife with a sheath in the thick grass, it will be much easier to find them.

That's all. Now you know the whole procedure and, if you wish, you can easily make exactly the kind of scabbard that you need.

Every outdoor enthusiast or just a supporter will certainly have a favorite camping knife. And everyone, probably, is familiar with wrapping it in paper, a newspaper, a towel, etc., from which it will certainly jump out on the way and ruin your favorite bag.

Well, if you have a special branded knife, which always comes with a sheath, even if you got it without a sheath, you can pick it up in stores for the expedition. But what if you have the most ordinary, simple, but favorite knife? The way out in this situation will be to make a sheath for a knife with your own hands.

How to sew a knife sheath with your own hands?

Before proceeding with the manufacture of a knife sheath, let's pay attention to one point - the handle of the knife must certainly be impregnated with water-repellent substances.

So, in order to make a scabbard with your own hands, here's what we need:

  • cotton dense fabric impregnated with resin;
  • a piece of hard dense quality leather;
  • kapron thread with a strong needle;
  • stationery clips;
  • an awl and pliers, if possible a drill with a thin drill;
  • calipers;
  • sharp working knife;
  • sharp cutters;
  • strong wire;
  • high-quality shoe polish for polishing scabbards.

Now we can get to work.

DIY leather sheath:

  1. First of all, we will make a hard liner from cotton fabric. We form it on the blade of the knife itself, after covering it with paraffin.
  2. Next, we cut out a suitable piece of leather, moisten it well, then put the insert on the knife and place it in the center of the cut.
  3. Then we wrap the knife with a piece of skin and fix it with clips along the contour of the future seam, leave the product until the skin is completely dry.
  4. Returning to work, we remove our clamps.
  5. Now we begin to sew homemade scabbards. Using an awl, make a couple of holes at the beginning of the fold line. We pass the thread on both sides and get the first stitch.
  6. In the opposite direction through the same holes we make the second stitch.
  7. Using the awl, we make markings for the following holes, strictly monitoring the uniformity of their location.
  8. Next, take a drill with a thin drill and make holes.
  9. And we continue to sew the sheath into two needles, removing the needles with pliers.
  10. Thus we sew to the end of the line. Now we tightly tighten the nylon thread in the way as shown in the figures.
  11. Next, cut the ends of the threads and melt them over a candle or match. The most difficult part of making a knife sheath with your own hands is over.
  12. Now take a sharp knife and cut off the excess skin, leaving a small margin.
  13. Then, with the help of an abrasive skin, we process the cut.
  14. Now let's look at how to make a hanger for a scabbard with your own hands. Cut out a U-shaped blank from a skin flap, cut small holes at the top with a knife.
  15. We pass the "tails" through the upper holes.
  16. For further work it is better to remove the knife from the sheath and insert a wooden stick of a suitable size. Mark the holes for mounting the suspension.
  17. Using cutters, we make holes along the outlined contours.
  18. And, finally, we will pass the finished suspension into the holes made, focusing on the images.
  19. Now our do-it-yourself leather scabbard is ready. In conclusion, let's do a couple more strokes.
  20. Next, we need to fit the scabbard to the exact size of the scabbard. So, we insert the knife into the sheath, after wetting them well, and tighten it tightly with wire.
  21. We are waiting for the complete drying of the skin and remove the wire.
  22. In conclusion, we will process our homemade sheaths with shoe cream, so that they will become softer and transform. At the same time, we insert the knife into the sheath, wrapping it with polyethylene.

Now do-it-yourself leather scabbard is ready! Have a fun active holiday.

Every survivalist, outdoor enthusiast, fishing, hunting or just tourism has a favorite working knife. It's good if the knife comes with a good shop sheath that meets the requirements for them. And what about those who either bought it, but without a sheath, or the sheath turned out to be a "Chinese" fiction ... Of course - to make a sheath for your favorite knife with your own hands. How to make a scabbard from or from I already wrote, it's time to tell you how to make simple handmade leather scabbard.

Let me point out right away that step-by-step instruction belongs to Viktor Vlasenko. (vlasenko.ru)
Notes or before proceeding with the manufacture of the scabbard:
1. The handle of the knife must be impregnated with a water-repellent compound (the handle must not be afraid of moisture).
2. To make a leather scabbard with your own hands, you need a hard liner. As an option, it can be made from cotton fabric impregnated with epoxy resin, molded directly on a knife blade, coated with molten stearin or paraffin with a brush. To protect the wooden handle from epoxy resin you can wrap it all, including the bolster, with masking tape (painting tape is impregnated with wax). We cut off the protruding masking tape along the outer edge of the bolster ... We check that the adhesive tape fits snugly on the bolster (without gaps that epoxy could get into). Next, we cover the blade and the area of masking tape near the bolster melted in a "water bath" with paraffin or stearin. Next, we wrap it with a cotton cloth soaked in epoxy resin ... The material is “soaked” in epoxy in strips and wound around the knife blade. Instead of cotton fabric, you can use a medical bandage, gauze, but in this case the liner will turn out to be more fragile. After the polymerization of the epoxy resin, the liner blank is boiled in boiling water to free it from stearin and mechanically processed to the required outer dimension. In the liner, a hole is made at the end to drain moisture and, if desired, several holes on the sides to facilitate drying of the skin ...

We believe that we have already made the insert, selected a suitable piece of leather and are ready to start making the scabbard ...

Soak the skin blank for 1 - 2 minutes in warm water. After we place the knife with the insert on the center of the workpiece. (If you feel sorry for a piece of wood or a blade, you can wrap them in polyethylene).

We wrap a knife with an insert with wet skin and, using clerical clips, fix the skin from the side of the future seam.

We leave our design in a warm place until the skin is completely dry ...

After the skin dries, we get a molded leather sheath blank with which you can already work comfortably ...

Let's start sewing! We will sew with two needles. For sewing, we need an awl, a pair of needles, pliers and threads.

We make a couple of holes at the end of the future scabbard. We thread the thread into the second hole and make the first tie towards the end of the scabbard ...

We make the second screed into the old hole, but in the opposite direction ...

We do the markings for the screeds slowly with the help of an ordinary ballpoint pen and any "measurement standard" ...

After marking with an awl, we outline the exact position of the future hole ...

For ease of stitching, the holes marked with an awl are additionally drilled with a drill ...

The seam is performed using two needles ... First, insert one needle with the end of the thread into the prepared hole ...

Using pliers, we pull the needle through the hole ...

Now we insert a second needle into the same hole, but on the other side ...

Continuing in this way we reach the last hole in our seam.

Here, before tightening the threads, we make several turns of one thread relative to the other.

After tightening, this "coil" will be inside the hole ...

We make one or two screeds with "layers" in the opposite direction ...

We bring the threads to the "back side" of our scabbard, cut them with a small margin and melt ...
We did the most laborious part and as a result we got an almost finished scabbard ...

We take a sharp knife in our hands and cut off everything superfluous ...

armed abrasive paper we bring the edge of the scabbard to the final dimensions ...

Now it is the turn of making a suspension of homemade leather sheaths.

Cut out a U-shaped suspension blank from a strip of leather

We thread two "tails" of the suspension into pre-prepared holes at its end ...

We take out the knife from the sheath, insert a technological wooden insert instead of it, and on the back of the sheath we mark the places for the holes for attaching the suspension ...

With sharp cutters we cut out the marked holes for attaching the suspension ...

Wood cutters are sold in many hardware stores, you can make your own ...

We insert the "tails" of the suspension into the extreme holes ...

We stretch "to the stop" the "tails" of the suspension ...

We make a wire loop and with its help we capture the "tail" of the suspension ...

With a wire we pull out the "tail" of the suspension into the central hole ...

We do the same with the second "tail" of the suspension ...

We cut the "tails" of the suspension to the size we need and insert them into the remaining free holes ...

As a result, we got the gimbal mount only on the skin without the use of all kinds of rivets and other "foreign" parts...

Our scabbard has acquired a completely finished look ...

Although the sheaths made by us can already be used for storing and carrying a knife, but now we need to do a number of additional operations to more accurately "fit" their size to a specific knife. First of all, this applies to the mouth of the scabbard. So let's get started ... Stock up on scraps of thick copper or aluminum wire.
We will soak the sheath sewn by us in warm water for several minutes ... Insert a knife into the wet sheath and use a wire to pull the skin at the edge of the mouth. In order not to deform the edge of the skin in the area of the seam along the latter, we will lay solid protective pads from improvised material. If you want to give the sheath some "artistic" they can be pulled together with wire in several more places ...

Leave the sheath in this state until the skin is completely dry. When the skin dries, it stretches and inner surface the scabbard will exactly repeat the shape of the knife handle ...

After the skin dries and the wire ties are removed, we get a finished, but not yet impregnated sheath ... If desired, before impregnation, home-made leather sheaths can be decorated with artistic ornaments using various technologies from surface carving to embossing with painting ...

Let's stop at simple version scabbard without additional decorations. For a water-repellent impregnation of the scabbard, we need a wax-based shoe polish. It is better to use "KIWI" in a suitable color, but you can soak the skin with any product containing wax or paraffin, although in the case of the latter, the sheath will turn out to be hard ... Using shoe cream will not only protect the sheath from moisture, but also make the skin soft, which contributes to a more tender and dense fit of the scabbard in the area of the knife handle. To exclude staining of the wood of the knife handle during the impregnation of the skin, the knife is placed in a plastic bag ...

We insert the knife in polyethylene into the sheath and begin to apply the cream on the skin of the sheath ...

After applying a layer of cream on the surface of the skin, let it absorb, then apply again, let it absorb again ... After a while, rub the sheath with a cloth to a shine ...
If, when wiping the surface of the skin with a clean cloth, it does not stain, then we consider that the entire cream has been absorbed and can be removed. protective film from the knife ... It is also useful to additionally impregnate the skin of the sheath from the inside in the area of \u200b\u200btheir mouth ...

The treatment of the sheath suspension with cream also helps to increase its elasticity ...

It remains only to be happy for us, as we made comfortable, reliable and beautiful scabbards for our favorite camping knife with our own hands.

PySy:
1. After piercing the holes, a groove can be cut along the entire seam so that the thread is recessed into the skin, but this is most likely for aesthetes. Firstly, this seam in such a sheath lies in a recess and access to it is limited (that is, if you run your finger along the seam, you simply won’t feel it, and secondly, when stitching with a nylon thread with a good tension in unwaxed leather, the thread itself cuts quite well into the skin and does not require additional protection ... Then, when soaking, the skin swells and finally hides the seam ...
2. To protect the threads from cutting, you can use an additional leather spacer along the seam. If you put a normal insert under the blade, then there is no need for a strip of leather under the seam - this is superfluous, because. the threads are cut mainly in the area of the cutting edge of the blade in the sheath, and cutting the threads in the area of \u200b\u200bthe hilt - this still needs to be tried ...
If you make a scabbard without an insert, then a strip of leather saves the thread from cutting through and its use is justified, but with long blades and soft skin, the skin itself is often cut from the side in the area of the blade, when the knife is sharp and it is inserted into the sheath with some turn of the RK relative to the seam ... Conclusion it is unambiguous - a soft sheath must have a hard liner ... Well, as for a leather spacer - this is optional ... If the sheath is made without an liner, then the use of a leather spacer to protect the seam from cutting is a necessary attribute.
