Every woman and girl has a personal box in which she keeps jewelry, cosmetics or other things. You can buy a box in the store or create a unique item with your own hands. To do this is not so difficult. The main thing is to choose the most appropriate way of decorating.

casket handmade made in classic style

Shabby chic style is gaining more and more popularity every year.

You can decorate the boxes with anything. Buttons, paper flowers, beautiful napkins, lace fabric, clay, beads, beads, colored glass, coins and so on are useful for decoration. The uniqueness of the jewelry is limited only by the imagination of the master. Of course, the set of tools and materials will largely depend on the decoration technique.

In most cases, the caskets are made of wood. To get a well-executed creation, special attention will need to be paid initial stage preparation:

Light motifs of nature on a box in the style of Provence

Stylish box made from improvised means

The most popular is the decoupage technique, known to masters for several centuries. Napkins are useful for decoration, beautiful pictures, pieces of fabric. Both a professional and a novice master can decorate a box using decoupage technique.

You can create a relief cover of the box with your own hands. In this case, come in handy: relief paste or modeling gels, stones, shells, beads and other volumetric elements.

If you have at least minimal artistic skills, then the box can be painted. There are many styles: Khokhloma, Gzhel, Gorodets painting. You can draw your own unique composition.

Decoupage

To work, you will need the following materials:

  • napkins, magazine clippings or scraps of fabric;
  • PVA glue;
  • acrylic paint;
  • brushes;
  • scissors;
  • sandpaper.

At the first stage, the box is prepared for decoration. The surface must be perfectly smooth, as subsequently all defects may become more noticeable. When the product is prepared and dried, you can proceed to the design:

  1. Cut and try on elements of the composition from napkins or fabric.
  2. Attach the cutout to the surface and carefully apply the glue, smoothing the paper from the center to the edges. If fabric is used in the decoupage technique, then glue will not work, it is better to take a stapler and attach the fabric to the inner lining of the box.
  3. Dry the product.
  4. Coat with varnish (if using fabric, this step is not necessary).

Using the decoupage technique, the box can be decorated both outside and inside.

Advice! For decoupage, you can use various photos. But first it is better to remove the bottom layer so that the paper is thinner.

Stylish vintage never goes out of style

A box with mohair fabric will be both practical and a wonderful decor for the interior.

Vinyl wallpapers

Leftovers can be used to decorate boxes. vinyl wallpaper. Thanks to simple actions, you can make a unique item with a "metal" coating. For this you will need:

  • wallpaper;
  • PVA glue;
  • towel (preferably disposable paper ones);
  • acrylic paints of several colors (black, bronze, scarlet, silver, green, gold);

You can decorate both the entire box as a whole, and certain elements. To perform the work, take the following steps:

  1. Cut out pieces from the wallpaper, taking into account the allowances for the sides.
  2. To glue the surface in an even layer, glue is applied to the back of the paper. Glue can be slightly diluted with water. The base should be very well saturated with the resulting solution.
  3. The paper needs to lie down a little, and then it is pressed tightly against the box with a sponge.

Important! It is imperative to ensure that bubbles do not appear.

This handmade box will be an unusual gift for family and friends.

Classic box in vintage style

Vintage box made in the technique of craquelure

After the described actions, the product should dry out and then really give the box a metal look.

Attention! The paint is applied with wet towels, it should lie unevenly.

  1. Initially, black acrylic paint is applied as a base. Can be used dark color in a bottle.
  2. With the help of towels, the box is covered in red and dried.
  3. The next layer is silver, and then bronze.
  4. After that (in a small amount!) Black and red colors are repeated
  5. Now carefully, using a damp towel, cover the entire box in green.
  6. The last layer is gold.

After the box dries, it is varnished.

painting

To paint a product, it is not necessary to have the talent of an artist. In addition, stencils can be used to decorate the box. You can choose absolutely any image, it all depends on your imagination and preferences. For work you will need:

  • box or box;
  • primer;
  • acrylic paints;
  • brushes;
  • stencil (you can make it yourself or buy it in a specialized store);
  • masking tape;
  • sandpaper.

Advice! It is better to pre-treat the box sandpaper and varnish.

One of the features of the shabby chic style is floral motifs.

Standard mustard-colored box with ribbons - simple and beautiful

Stylish box made using decoupage technique

The work includes several stages:

  1. Primer coating.
  2. Sanding.
  3. Tape the bottom corners.
  4. Product coating light acrylic paint.

Important! Acrylic is applied evenly.

  1. After drying, the surface is treated with sandpaper and a layer of paint is applied a tone darker. This layer should be liquid so that you can then wet it with a sponge, giving the surface a texture.
  2. Fix the base with varnish.
  3. Masking tape covers the parts of the box that will not be decorated.
  4. The selected stencil is fixed.
  5. The drawing is carefully painted over. The paint should be thick, water is used in a minimal amount.

Perhaps, after drying, the drawing will have to be repainted, since the first time the color is likely to be pale. If the stencil is a small element of the composition, then the action will have to be repeated several times. After the painting has dried, the box is varnished.

This master class allows you to create a product whose surface looks like fabric. This is achieved due to the fact that between the main layers the box is varnished, and the paint does not impregnate the wood.

The box decorated with beads and leaves looks very beautiful

This type of decoration of the box will be an excellent addition to the interior or an original gift.

Volumetric decor

The next master class is devoted to creating volumetric decor with your own hands. Here again the decoupage technique will be used. For work you will need:

  • casket;
  • printout of the picture in two copies (on glossy and matte photo paper);
  • acrylic paints (it is better to choose glossy);
  • putty;
  • palette knife;
  • sandpaper;
  • acrylic paints of different colors;
  • brushes of different numbers (No. 1 - a must!);
  • felt on an adhesive basis;
  • lace, ribbons;
  • thick glue;
  • scissors;
  • primer;
  • masking tape;
  • transparent, quick-drying and reliable glue (you can use "Moment").

The surface is pre-prepared with sandpaper. At this stage, it is worth considering that the paint will give a certain thickness to the walls and the lid may not close tightly. Therefore, at the junction, it is necessary to sand the tree especially carefully. After that, the surface is primed.

Shabby chic style combines a large number of details

Decorating the box with beads will make it brighter and more presentable.

Provence blue box

Registration is carried out in several stages:

Advice! If folds cannot be avoided, then you can drive them away to different leaves or flower petals, and then “hide” them behind the drawing.

  1. The dried surface is fixed with varnish.
  2. To create volume, putty or structural paste is applied to certain elements of the pattern. The layer should not exceed three millimeters. Leave an indent from the edge.
  3. The bulges are treated with sandpaper.
  4. From the second drawing, images are cut out along the contour, which should be three-dimensional and glued to the lid.
  5. After drying, the contours are drawn with acrylic paints.
  6. The rest of the product is decorated and varnished.

Thanks to the master class, you can easily make an original box with a three-dimensional pattern with your own hands.

Plywood sheets of various thicknesses are an almost ideal material for the manufacture of a variety of decorative elements. Having mastered the skills of working with this material, you will be able to make different shelves, frames, boxes for storing small items, etc. with your own hands. At the same time, each product can be given a unique appearance, since plywood is processed simply and without the use of complex tools.
In this article, we will show you how you can make a small plywood box, but the technique used for this operation can be applied to other home decor items.

What will be needed for work

Choosing materials

Naturally, for manufacturing:

  • The quality of the veneer should be maximum (first or second grade). Blisters, knots, resin drips, etc. are not allowed on the sheet surface.

  • It is very important that the veneer sheets are glued over the entire area of the workpiece, especially if the walls of our box are carved.
  • Before work, plywood should be dried, as raw material often leads to tool breakage.
  • The color of the veneer will play a role only if we leave all surfaces without painting and varnishing. If any processing will be applied, then it is better to focus on the selection of plywood for quality, and achieve the desired color through the use of pigments.
  • The thickness depends on the dimensions of the product. As a rule, plywood 4-6 mm thick is used for decorative desktop drawers.

Advice! Plywood thinner than 4 mm should not be used: this will cause difficulties in processing the ends, since thin sheets veneers are stratified when sawing.

To connect individual parts to each other, small nails with hidden heads, self-tapping screws, or furniture glue.
We also need paint or varnish for final processing.

Instruments

Working with plywood does not require powerful and bulky tools. Here, rather, devices for “fine” work will be appropriate:

  • Jigsaw (manual or electric, but necessarily designed for curly carving).
  • A stock of jigsaw files.
  • Wood saw for rough processing of blanks and cutting plywood sheets.
  • Screwdriver (if self-tapping screws are used).
  • A hammer.
  • A set of files for wood (round, flat and triangular).
  • Sandpaper for grinding.
  • Paints, rollers and swabs for finishing products.

When all the materials and tools are purchased and prepared for work, you can start making our plywood box.

Making a decorative box

Drawing and cutting

To make a beautiful box, first of all, we need fairly detailed drawings: we will describe below how to make a plywood box, but you will have to decide on your own with its appearance and dimensions:

  • First, we select a design, which we then transfer to a piece of paper in the form of a sketch.
  • We put down the estimated dimensions on the sketch. To avoid unpleasant surprises, experts recommend folding a simple paper layout. So you will know for sure that the product will “become” in the place allotted to it, and will not be either too big or too small.
  • If the dimensions satisfy us, we draw a plywood box on graph paper.

  • Based on the drawing, we form a cutting sheet, placing the details of our future box on the workpiece as compactly as possible. This can be done using paper templates, but it will be easier to use a special computer program.
  • According to the cutting sheet, we cut out the walls, bottom and lid of the box from the workpiece. This can be done both independently and in a company that deals with cutting fiberboard, chipboard and similar materials. True, not all companies will undertake such a small job, and the price of the product will increase in this case.

Product processing and assembly

After we have at our disposal the required number of blanks cut to size, we can begin to create the box itself:

  • We process the cut plywood strips with sandpaper. We pay special attention to cleaning the edges.
  • We apply the templates printed on the printer to the blanks and transfer the drawings to the plywood base for cutting.
  • For through cuts, we drill the starting holes with a drill, after which we cut out the pattern with a jigsaw.

  • We additionally process the openwork parts with files and sandpaper, removing splinters and chamfering.

Note! These recommendations should be taken into account only if the drawings of plywood boxes used suggest the presence of openwork elements. If the walls and the lid remain intact, you can immediately proceed to the assembly.

When the preparatory processing is over, we begin to assemble the box:

  • First we fasten the side walls together. The most reliable will be an adhesive bond reinforced with furniture nails or stapler staples.
  • Then we attach the bottom to the frame.
  • In the upper part, with the help of self-tapping screws, we fix metal loops. We hang a lid on them (flat or assembled in the form of a box).

Finishing

Before us is an almost finished box, which, however, needs to be slightly modified. Here the instruction largely depends on what we want to end up with:

  • We re-process all surfaces and corners with sandpaper, removing all burrs formed during the installation process.
  • We putty the joints of plywood sheets and the places of fasteners, hiding all the irregularities. We grind the dried putty, achieving perfect flat surface.
  • We apply a primer layer on all external planes, which will ensure reliable adhesion of the wood to the varnish coating.
  • We carry out varnishing, applying varnish in several layers. If a varnish mixture with pigments is used, then a darker varnish is laid on the base layers, and the surface is covered with an almost transparent one.
  • An alternative to varnishing can be painting the box with special paints for wood.

Advice! For improvement appearance sometimes a decorative component is added to the paint - craquelure. Drying, it creates a network of microcracks on the painted layer, thereby simulating the effect of aging.

  • Another way to traditionally decorate plywood boxes is decoupage. This technology consists in pasting the workpiece with decorative napkins, followed by varnishing.
  • At the end of all the work, we fix accessories on the surfaces: handles, latches, etc.

Separately, it is necessary to process and inner surface. The easiest way is to sand all the bumps and varnish the plywood. But you can work hard, finishing the “insides” with a cloth: of course, this task is not an easy one, but the box will look much more attractive!

Finishing and assembling boxes

1. Inspect all surfaces and re-sand if necessary. Apply a finishing coat.

2. Shorten the handle fixing screws (fig. 1) and reinstall all handles. Insert the boxes into the bases so that they rest on the rails E.

MASTER'S ADVICE

How to make perfect rounded corners caskets

Choosing in the walls of the tongues for the bottom with a slotted cutter, you get rid of the need to fill the holes at the corners of the box, which will inevitably appear if you make the tongues with a slotted disc or a straight cutter.

But at the same time, it is necessary to round the corners of the bottom in accordance with the radius of the slot cutter. Here's a simple and sure-fire way to get around this quickly: Install a rounding cutter in the router table that has a radius equal to the radius of the spline cutter (in our case 8 mm).

Lock the rip fence of the router table flush with the cutter bearing and parallel to the groove for the cross fence. Then fix a wooden plate on the head of the cross stop, the end of which should almost touch the longitudinal stop. Now, pressing the bottom blank B against the longitudinal stop and backing it with a pad, form the roundings at the corners as shown.

DIY boxes - drawings

The box is a very useful item in everyday life. Buying an author's jewelry box is an expensive pleasure. If you want to become the owner of an exclusive item or give close person handmade jewelry box, it is quite simple to realize the idea. How? Make your own box. If you have never worked with wood before, choose plywood as the material. Even a novice master will make a plywood thing with his own hands, when he adheres to simple and understandable rules.

Peculiarities

This is how plywood is characterized by those who like to make the little things necessary for a comfortable life on their own. It doesn't take long to master the skills of working with plywood. Having made a box from plywood, you can easily make shelves, frames and other items from this material that will become an exclusive decoration of the house and the pride of its owners.

The choice of material affects the quality of the product, so it is better to choose grades 1 and 2 of plywood.

The right choice of material for such a necessary thing is the main issue that must be resolved before starting work. The veneer comes in 4 grades. For the box, only 1 and 2 grades of plywood are suitable. When buying material, you must definitely pay attention to how well its sheets are glued.

Plywood must be dried before work. If this rule is circumvented, the tool can be broken during the manufacture of the box. Does veneer color matter? It all depends on how the finished product is presented. If the plywood box is not subsequently varnished or painted, the color of the veneer should be given attention. Are you going to paint or varnish a thing - then the color of the base material does not matter.

The thickness of the plywood is an important issue that usually confuses beginners. The thickness of plywood and the dimensions of the box are closely related. The larger the thing, the wider the plywood is needed. Such products are usually made of plywood, whose thickness is from 4 to 6 mm. Why is thinner plywood not recommended? Because the ends of the box will be more difficult to process. Thin plywood can delaminate under the mechanical action exerted on it.

Tools and drawings

To make the box, you will need the following tools and materials:

Drawing of the box with dimensions.

  • plywood;
  • jigsaw with a supply of files;
  • screwdriver;
  • a hammer;
  • a set of files;
  • sandpaper;
  • rollers;
  • pompoms;
  • brushes.

To make such an exclusive product, you will need a jigsaw and a supply of files for it. A wood saw cuts plywood and rough handling blanks for the future thing. If the box is made using self-tapping screws, you need a screwdriver. A set of files for woodworking, a hammer, sandpaper will also be required. If the finished product is to be painted or varnished, you must first take care of the presence of varnish, dyes, rollers, brushes, pompons and other devices with which operations are carried out.
To make the product look aesthetically pleasing, you need a drawing and a drawing.

The first step is to draw a sketch of the thing, where the estimated dimensions of the plywood box are indicated. If you are making a box for the first time, there is a high probability that an inaccuracy will be made somewhere in the calculations. To avoid wasting time, it is best to first make the box (its layout) out of paper. If you like the paper box and its dimensions are found to be suitable, the drawing of the thing is transferred to graph paper.

Schematic of the details of a polyhedral casket.

Plywood is cut based on this drawing. The parts that will make up the box are placed closer to each other. This will make cutting much easier. Plywood can also be cut using paper templates. To speed up and simplify the manufacture of the box, it is better to draw templates using a computer, and print the drawings on a printer. As soon as the wall, bottom, lid of the future thing are cut out, they begin to assemble it.
