Note that the operation switching knob is very tight. 23 operations are switched sequentially. To move from the loop to the 23rd operation, you have to turn the regulator for a long time and monotonously, which is physically and mentally tiring.
All operations are adjusted in length and width by horizontal sliders. It will not be very convenient for girls with a "beautiful manicure" and long nails to pull such a slider. much more convenient disk controls.

The loop has an auto reset function. After the first buttonhole has been created, select stitch 1 on the operation indicator to sew a new buttonhole, then return to position BH.

Equipment

The complete set of the Janome My Excel W23U sewing machine can be safely called good. The standard package includes all the most necessary paws and accessories that you may need for the first time.

  2. Overlock foot
  3. Hemming foot
  4. Blind stitch / Blind hem foot
  5. Buttonhole foot
  6. Zipper foot
  7. Automatic buttonhole foot
  8. Bobbins 5 pcs
  9. Screwdriver narrow
  10. Screwdriver wide
  11. Large reel seat
  12. Reel seat small
  13. Steamer
  14. Cleaning brush
  15. Parallel stitch guide
  16. Rod for the second coil
  17. Felt lining under the coil
  18. A set of universal needles 5 pcs
  19. Case hard plastic
  20. Pedal
  21. Power cord
  22. Instruction in Russian
For dense fabrics, I recommend purchasing needles for jeans and leather, and for elastic fabrics, stretch or jersey needles. Now there are quite a few needle manufacturers, but I prefer Organ and Schmetz. If there is a need to work with stretchy fabrics, then the knit foot or the upper conveyor will be a must.
Contents may vary depending on delivery.

Reliability

All main parts are made of metal. The working surface (bed) is the same part of the body as the back wall.

The reliability of the shuttle design is also not suspicious. It is reinforced with a metal ring and firmly fixed to the frame. When parsing the Janome My Excel W23U, we could not find out the power of the motor, since there were no corresponding designations on the motor itself.

Based on the marking of the total power consumption on the back of the case - 85 W and the power of the halogen lamp 5W, we can conclude: 85 W - 5 W = 80 W. But this calculation raises a lot of doubts, since we have already proved in our reviews that such a calculation is not always correct.

The operation display system aroused suspicion. The cable pulls the red flag when the operation knob is turned. In my opinion, there are systems that are simpler, and therefore more reliable.

The convenience of use

Under the top cover there is a presser foot pressure regulator on the fabric. The regulator has three steps, which will not allow you to set the required press of the paws, but only in the proposed range.

A knife for trimming the thread protrudes from the body on the left. You can also cut the thread with a special slot on the presser foot holder rod.

With reverse side The sewing machine has a bottom feed cut-off lever, which is used for sewing on buttons, darning/embroidery operations, etc.

There is a needle threader that threads the thread manually. The thread enters the eye of the needle after the user puts the thread on the 2 hooks of the needle threader.

The lighting of the working area is quite bright - a halogen lamp of 5 W. The light bulb is located under the front cover of the machine.

The Janome W23U package includes an additional reel seat (vertical). It is installed in tandem with the main horizontal spool holder for sewing with a twin needle.

The black button on the universal foot A will secure the foot in a horizontal position if you press it down before lowering the foot.

This will help to evenly feed the material, both at the beginning of the seam and when working with several layers of fabric.

For example, when sewing over finishing seams on jeans. Once you reach the thickest spot, lower the needle and raise the presser foot. Press the black button, then lower the presser foot and continue sewing. The foot will release after a few stitches.
If you are not satisfied with the seams when sewing knitted fabrics, adjust the seams with the balancing wheel.

The sewing speed can be changed with the foot controller. The more you press the pedal, the faster the sewing speed.

The maximum sewing speed can be set using the sewing speed range dial.

The sewing speed changes smoothly from low to high, depending on the position of the slider.
The pedal itself is completely metal.

The Janome My Excel W23U has a needle up/down button.

When this button is pressed, the needle is set to its highest or lowest position, which eliminates the need to use the handwheel to raise or lower the needle.

Convenient enough accessory case expands working area. Accessory case flip-top lets you store additional accessories without removing the case.

Additional storage space for standard presser feet is provided under the top cover.

Few people look under the sewing machine. In this design, we see a large overhang of only one support under the arm platform.

The half of the sewing machine rests on only one point, which does not add stability to this model. Supports are not adjustable in height.

The hard case fits snugly to the body of the machine, which saves storage space.

Stitchability of materials

The toothed rack is divided into 7 segments for improved advancement of both thin and elastic, as well as dense and heavy materials.

The test was carried out on a universal foot and without additional materials and devices.

Noise

The Janome My Excel W23U sewing machine is very noisy compared to similar models. The sound pressure value of 75.8 dBA indicates uncomfortable use at home!
Measurements were taken at home. The sewing machine was located on wooden table. The sound level meter MS 6708 is installed at a distance of 40 cm from the sewing machine. Sound level meter error ± 1.5 dbA. Our measurement should not be compared with tables of average values, as measurements were made exclusively according to our specifications.

This is an electronic sewing machine, which, due to its qualities, should appeal to both a beginner and a professional. Let's take a closer look at it.

The sewing machine has a rigid casing. In it, the car can be stored and transported without fear of accidental impacts at all (tested by a two-year-old child). There is also enough space in the casing to fit the power cable and foot control with signal cord along with the sewing machine itself.

The machine in working position looks like this:

The main sewing patterns are shown on the cover of the upper compartment. In the compartment itself there are (from left to right): upper thread tension regulator; presser foot pressure regulator; horizontal spool holder, slot for vertical spool holder; set of paws; place to wind the thread on the bobbin. In addition, a set of needles and a ruler-guide are located in the same compartment.

By the way, the thread tension and presser foot pressure regulators allow you to adjust the machine to any thickness of fabric - from thin air to thick multilayer. True, in order to understand how to use them, you still have to read the attached instructions.

Machine top

Cover with sewing patterns

As it turned out, this arrangement, when part of the adjustments, thread and bobbin holders are hidden under the cover, is a very convenient solution. The horizontal arrangement of the spool provides a smoother unwinding of the thread, and in free time, the upper elements of the machine are reliably protected from accidental influences. The very appearance of the machine becomes more pleasing to the eye, and from a practical point of view, there is an excellent place to store accessories.

Other accessories are in the lower compartment. The complete list of them is:

  • foot standard;
  • foot for decorative stitches;
  • foot for overcasting lines;
  • foot for invisible hem;
  • zipper foot;
  • hem foot (2 mm);
  • buttonhole foot;
  • ripper;
  • a set of needles;
  • rod for the second coil;
  • felt pad and plates for the coil;
  • ruler-guide;
  • tassel;
  • screwdrivers;
  • bobbins.

There was a nuisance with the zipper foot - in the working position, the needle rests on it, which makes it unsuitable for work. Most likely, the problem can be solved if you work a little with a needle file or buy a new foot in a store. However, I did not do either one or the other, since the need for this foot did not arise for me yet. The rest of the legs don't have this problem. In addition to the standard foot, I most often used the invisible hem foot. With it, I easily and efficiently hemmed trousers.

The front panel of the machine is made of plastic, the frame (the main supporting frame) is made of metal.

On the front panel are:

  • needle up/down button;
  • selected stitch indicator;
  • stitch width adjuster;
  • stitch length regulator;
  • maximum sewing speed regulator;
  • Reverse key for sewing in reverse.

Let's take a closer look at some of these elements.

Needle up/down button. The needle will always stop in the up position or always down, depending on the position of this button. It is not necessary to turn the flywheel by hand.

Selected stitch indicator. The selected position is highlighted by a red LED. The stitch selection itself is carried out by a switch on the right side of the machine. Below I have posted a photo of the display panel itself and the corresponding list of lines (taken from the instruction manual).

Stitch selector display panel

  1. Diamond-shaped satin stitching for a decorative finish.
  2. Scalloped seam. For decorative finishing and edging.
  3. Diamond-shaped satin stitching for decorative finishing (differs from point 1 in pattern).
  4. Triangular satin stitching for a decorative finish.
  5. Decorative stitch. Often used for sewing on cord or decorative threads.
  6. Edge seam. Is used for decorative processing fabric edges.
  7. Bridge stitch. It is used to sew together two sheets of fabric so that there is a gap between them.
  8. Blind stitch for stretchy fabrics. Used for hemming the hems of garments, such as trousers, where the stitching should not be visible.
  9. Elastic crotch. It is used for stitching two canvases, such as patchwork.
  10. Edge seam. It is used for decorative processing of edges of thin fabrics.
  11. Three step zigzag. It can be used, for example, for sewing on an elastic band.
  12. Zigzag.
  13. Straight line.
  14. Knitted stitch. Used as a straight stitch when sewing medium thickness jerseys.
  15. Reinforced straight stitch. Recommended for sewing stretch fabrics or thick knitwear. Also, this stitch is used where strength and reliability of the seam are needed. Use it to reinforce details such as hooks and armholes, for sewing backpacks, etc. The stitch is sewn two stitches forward and one stitch back to form a seam that is not easily torn.
  16. Reinforced zigzag. Can be used for sewing heavy stretch fabrics and all types of work for which a zigzag is used. It can also be used as a decorative stitch.
  17. "Feather" line. Used as a decorative stitch and for butt stitching.
  18. Overlock line. It is used for simultaneous stitching and overcasting of the edge of materials that are not very prone to shedding.
  19. Closed overlock seam. It is used when processing fabrics such as jersey, sewing on cuffs and knitted collars.
  20. Pullover stitch with reinforced edge. Elastic and finishing and overcasting seams on knitted details, stitching of details.
  21. Decorative stitch.
  22. Decorative stitch.
  23. Decorative stitch.

It is worth noting that the overlock stitch (No. 18) has the same pattern on the front and back sides, which is different from the stitches that can be obtained on a real overlock.

Reverse key. With its help, you can easily and naturally fix the line. Moreover, the size and location of this button almost always allow you to accurately find it by touch.

The lower compartment can be removed if you need to process sleeves, legs and similar objects

Threading is easy and simple, and the needle threader threads the needle in seconds.

The presser foot can be raised so that the gap under the presser foot increases to 11 mm. This is very convenient if you want to put a thick "pie" under the foot, for example, from a couple of layers of coat fabric, insulation and lining. The foot itself can be changed at any time. It is enough to press the red button on the back, disconnect the old foot, place the new foot under the presser foot holder and lower it.

The built-in needle threader is able to impress any seamstress who has never worked on a sewing machine made outside the USSR.

There is an automatic buttonhole function. To do this, insert a button in measuring device foot and set the width and density of the buttonhole. The machine will do the rest.

The electronic unit, regardless of the sewing speed, ensures a constant needle piercing force. This is one of the advantages of machines with an electronic unit, which allows you to comfortably work with even the most dense and thick fabrics.

The maximum sewing speed of this machine is quite enough for any household tasks, but it is worth remembering that the machine is not professional and such tasks as sheathing curtains and sewing covers for upholstered furniture can seem tedious.

Back view

At the rear end of the sewing machine are: a handwheel with a main drive switch (it can also be called a bobbin winding switch), a stitch selector, a main switch, a power cord and a connected pedal. In the photo you can also see the presser foot raise/lower lever, the needle threader and the previously mentioned red button for quick foot change.

Perfect for everyday needs of both beginners and experienced seamstresses. In addition, this is a great option to replace the old Soviet sewing machine.

In conclusion, I will tell you about one interesting episode. When I chose this machine, I consulted a sewing machine mechanic at the factory upholstered furniture. Among other things, I asked him about the warranty for this model. The answer finally convinced me of the correctness of the choice: "Forget about the warranty, with this machine you will never need it."

The warranty really did not come in handy for me, since breakdowns most often occur after the end of the warranty period.

Partially disassembled car

You are probably wondering why I dismantled the car. No, this is not to add such a spectacular photo to the article. The fact is that when this article was almost ready to be sent to the editor, the needle up / down button on the machine suddenly failed and the LED - the indicator of the selected line - went out.

Since the car is already four years old and the warranty is over, I had to disassemble it myself and try to fix it. I repaired the LED, but the reason for the failure of the button to raise / lower the needle could not be established. On the one hand, this is clearly not a primary function and its loss is not at all terrible, but on the other hand, the very fact of a breakdown and the need for repairs after only four years from the date of purchase is a very alarming signal. You never know what else can glitch in the near future.

I have a basic knowledge of electronics, so I managed to fix the LED (a very important thing, by the way - switching lines by touch is hardly a pleasant pleasure), and the average housewife would obviously have incurred a car repair - and certain losses in this regard. Although, it may be a pure coincidence that only happened to my car. To make sure of this, you need to familiarize yourself with the experience of other users on the relevant forums on the Internet. However, if you still decide to buy a sewing machine, then in any case, I advise you to study the forums.

Grade 5

Pros: Powerful, can be adjusted to any fabric. Works well with hard synthetics (I sew a sail, dense synthetics + straps + zig-zag). At the same time, if you reconfigure, it sews tulle and other small things just as well. With a walking foot, it copes well with curtains.

Cons: None

Comment: Great model. Sewing everything! From thin curtains, to leather and synthetic belts. Record - 4 layers of belt + 2 layers of synthetics.

Pasha N. September 15, 2015, Arkhangelsk

Grade 5

Advantages: high-quality lines on different types of fabrics, not noisy, hard case

Disadvantages: for 4 years of active operation did not find

Comment: I am very satisfied with the machine, I sew a lot and there were no problems. Copes with completely different fabrics and suits, and chiffon, and a cooler with lycra (the carpet did not want to tune in, but it was necessary to urgently sew a T-shirt - Dzhanomochka miraculously sewed everything). The car is great! The only thing I want to make a reservation is that I do not save on needles and threads, I put only high-quality ones.

Grade 5

Pros: love this one sewing machine. Tried to sew different materials: from leather to knitwear. Everything suits me. Easy to manage, you can understand without difficulty. Of course, by modern standards, it is already obsolete, but for an undemanding consumer it is 100% suitable. It is clearly necessary to observe the ratio of needle-thread-fabric, then all the lines will be even. Thick sections pass without problems. I bought a bunch of paws - for models of this company they are very cheap.

Disadvantages: It is inconvenient that you have to hold the button continuously to reverse. There is no way to hold the fabric with your hands at this moment. But this may be due to my inexperience.

Comment: At first I wanted a more expensive model, but after reading a lot positive feedback about this hard worker, I bought it. And never regretted it.

Olga i. June 23, 2013, Tomsk \ Experience: several months

Grade 5

Advantages: Workhorse, I have had it for 10 years, sews silk, chiffon, drape, jeans, leather. 3 years served me in the repair of clothes. It paid for itself 20 times. I love it. I like that you can choose a quiet move - very convenient for sewing thick materials (when you sew jeans or leather, for example). It is also convenient to fix the needle in the fabric, for example, at the corner when you need to turn)

Cons: The automatic buttonhole is not the best, I do the buttonhole by hand.

Comment: Regarding skipped stitches, I can only say one thing - different fabrics need different needles and threads and you will be happy, you can read more about the settings on the sewing forums (aspen or season for example). Some users also criticize the overlock stitch, overlock stitch and processing the edge with an overlock is a big difference and you must immediately understand that not a single household machine will process, much less cut the edge like an overlock.
Regarding the extra 5 embroidery pseudo-overlock lines, 3 of them I constantly use, especially the last 23 - I use it as a finishing line on jeans, for example, friends and customers are delighted.

Raisa b. July 16, 2012 Moscow and Moscow region \ Experience: more than a year

Grade 4

Pros: Excellent value for money ratio. A very good car. I've been using it for 4 years now. It takes both chiffon, and drape, and knitwear. The stitching is satisfactory, it can withstand comparison with the industrial one. I read a comment about an automatic loop (they say that it is not possible to adjust the uniform covering of the left and right edges), so this happens quite often in industrial machines. In a word, this machine is suitable for both simple housewives and a small studio with a small area (power) and traffic. A very good feature is the "knit stitch" (semi-zigzag). good selection paws and accessories. And most importantly, any more or less capable dressmaker or seamstress will be able to set it up and make minor repairs.

Weaknesses: Unregulated length of knit and some finishing stitches. But in my opinion, it is not regulated in other sewing machines, and different brands. And yet it's inconvenient. Of course, slow speed (at the maximum selected). But most importantly, I can’t buy good quality needles for knitwear! The "native" (included) needle takes any kind of knitwear, but the purchased one - NO!

Valentina K. March 29, 2012, Moscow and Moscow region \ Experience: more than a year

Grade 5

Pros: Ease of use. Takes thin, thick, knitted fabrics. Works quietly, does not vibrate, powerful.

Disadvantages: I don’t get a very beautiful loop, the density of the covering is different, there is a balance, but I didn’t manage to adjust it. Communicated on specialized forums - many have such a problem.
For knitted stitches, when setting the stitch width, the step is set automatically, sometimes it is not very convenient.

Comment: Today it happened to sew on a simple Brother and I fell in love with my machine with tripled strength. Everything that seemed self-evident - a smooth line without breakage and looping, the presence of decorative and knitted lines, low volume during operation, ease of threading the bobbin, ease when passing through thick sections, smooth speed adjustment, etc. - everything turned into undoubted advantages.
I sew on my machine and knitwear, without an overlocker, and thin and thick fabrics.

Characteristics

Specifications Janome My Excel W23U (ME W 23U)

Automatic bobbin winder

For winding the bobbin, each machine has a special device. For sewing machines with a horizontal hook, the bobbin is inserted into the bobbin case. For machines with a vertical hook, the bobbin is inserted from above, directly into the shuttle. The bobbin thread is threaded under the bobbin spring plate or bobbin case in any case. Such a "trifle" as winding thread on a bobbin often creates a lot of inconvenience when sewing. Actually, any, even a novice seamstress, knows how to wind a thread on a bobbin, especially since there is a visual instruction and this operation itself is very elementary.

The weight of a sewing machine is made up of the materials from which it is made. If the old high-performance models, the body of which is made of metal, then their weight will be much more than the weight of modern computerized and simple household machines, the body material of which is plastic.

Types of loops:

A standard linen loop can be made on all electromechanical sewing machines, with the exception of the most primitive models. However, electromechanical sewing machines cannot sew other kinds of buttonholes.

A straight slotted linen loop is performed in semi-automatic mode without turning the fabric in four steps. To perform a buttonhole, four switches must be made: when basting the left side of the buttonhole, the far bartack, the right side and when basting the near bartack. Depending on the size of the button, most electromechanical sewing machines can sew the buttonhole automatically. To carry out this operation, place the button in the buttonhole measuring device of the foot to set the density and width of the buttonhole, the machine will do all other operations automatically.

The buttonhole in the automatic mode depends entirely on the quality of the sewing machine, and the buttonhole in the semi-automatic mode depends on the user's skill. Computerized sewing machines sew buttonholes automatically, and most models can sew buttonholes according to button sizes. And in the most expensive models of sewing machines, you can even set the desired buttonhole sizes. Types of sewing lines:

Working lines:

In addition to the traditional straight stitch and zigzag, it is customary to include loops, overlock stitches, stitches for invisible hemming of the bottom of the product, stitches for processing and sewing elastic fabrics, stitches for quilting, as well as various other stitches.

Decorative stitches:

Computerized sewing machines perform various decorative stitches, including: openwork stitches, hemstitches, cross stitches, satin stitches, scalloped hems and various ornaments. A complex model of a sewing machine can contain several alphabets in memory, and some models boast not only the Latin alphabet, but also the Cyrillic alphabet, while others even have hieroglyphs.
Modification of any line of a computerized sewing machine occurs by changing the width and length of the stitch. Some models feature vertical or horizontal mirroring, and can also rotate stitches.
Computerized sewing machines have a built-in memory into which certain combinations of letters or a sequence of various interesting elements can be entered, with which you can embroider a beautiful border.

Model Year:

The year in which the manufacturer's engineers developed this model for serial assembly. The more conservative models, which were produced from 1990 to 2000, have ambiguous design decisions in the design, such as pushers and reversers when choosing an operation on rubber bands, which does not allow you to often switch between operations. This disables the operation switching mechanism. Outdated motors are used, which can overheat and, as a result, melt body parts. Slow sewing speed. Due to the high weight, there is practically no possibility of transportation, bulky dimensions.

Equipment from the new model range after 2010 is devoid of such difficulties, since they are used in production Newest technologies - stepper motors, lightweight heat-resistant alloys in the manufacture of parts, the use of electronics, which allows the technique to be as functional and in demand as possible. Reliability characteristics in the latest models are several times higher than in conservative ones.

Number of loops performed:

Computerized sewing machines can sew up to ten types of buttonholes, such as buttonholes with rounded edges, knitwear buttonholes, eyelet suiting buttonholes, and others. The traditional linen loop is also included in their quantity. The machine allows you to make a loop yourself, and then enter it into the memory of the sewing machine in order to quickly and accurately perform several more identical loops for a particular product.

Number of operations:

Depending on the model of the sewing machine, the number of operations may be different. For example, earlier models were distinguished by the ability to perform no more than 10 operations, and modern computerized sewing machines can perform up to several hundred operations.

With the help of additional loopers in the overlock, the threads are interlaced. The ability to perform one or another number of lines depends on which loopers the overlock is equipped with. Most overlockers have an upper and lower looper, so they can be used to perform a large number of overcasting seams, for example: 4-thread overcasting, 3-thread overcasting narrow, 3-thread wide, 3-thread Flatlock narrow, 3-thread Flatlock wide, 3-thread rolled hem, 3-thread border, etc.

Line on body:

Some sewing machines have a ruler on the sleeve. It is extremely convenient for marking products and measuring distances. With the help of a ruler on the case, it is convenient to leave allowances for sewing and perform cutting, since it is always visually visible which part of the product will be processed. Sometimes the ruler is made with phosphorescent paint so that it can be seen in poor lighting. When buying an overlock, you should make sure that the ruler is applied with good paint and will not be erased when sewing.

Max foot lift:

Maximum stitch length:

Using this parameter, it is easy to determine what thickness of fabric can be processed on this sewing machine. In order for the sewing machine not to skip while sewing, it is necessary to supply a sufficient amount of thread, usually for dense materials. The stitch length of the best examples of sewing machines is from 5 to 6 millimeters, and inexpensive sewing machines can boast a stitch length of only up to 4 millimeters.

Maximum sewing speed:

The sewing speed of a sewing machine is measured by the number of stitches per minute. Based on this, the higher the sewing speed, the faster you can get the finished product. Naturally, in order for the sewing speed to be as high as possible, it is necessary to have certain skills. As practice shows, the type and power of the engine of a particular modification of the sewing machine also affects the sewing speed. For example, electromechanical machines can produce speeds up to 600 sti/min, computerized sewing machines up to 800 sti/min, but this is when sewing using a foot pedal. But if you sew using the start/stop button, the sewing speed will not exceed 600 sti/min.

Maximum stitch width:

The expressiveness and width of the decorative stitch depends entirely on the width of the stitch. At best, the stitch width will be in the region of 6 millimeters, although household sewing machines boast a stitch width of 7 to 9 millimeters.

Bottom conveyor:

It plays an important role in determining the possibility of sewing fabrics of different density and capricious texture. So, there is a dependence on the area of contact of the lower conveyor (toothed rack) to the fabric and the quality of sewing complex fabrics (the larger the area of contact, the better the fabric will be processed).

As a rule, for processing medium-thick materials, a lower conveyor is used, which has 4 or 5 segments and 6 teeth on its front sides. If the number of segments and teeth is less, then it may be difficult to sew thin fabrics. But if the number of segments and teeth is greater, the range of work with more complex types of piercing materials may also increase.

When working with fabric, you need to pay special attention to sharpening and tooth structure:

Needle threader:

This is a convenient and practical device built into the overlocker and designed to quickly thread the needle. The needle threader is simply indispensable for seamstresses who cannot boast of perfect vision, and significantly speeds up work with frequent changes of threads, for example, of different colors. To quickly thread a needle, it is necessary to thread the thread through the needle threader hook and release (or press, if provided for by the design) a small lever. The thread will instantly push into the eye of the needle, and you just have to remove the loop that has formed.As you know, there are several main types of needle threader: typical, automatic and absent.

Work surface lighting:

This function is very convenient and practical, especially when working in a poorly lit room or at night. Distinguish the following types work surface lighting: additional special lighting, LED lighting, as well as lighting with an incandescent foot or a double LED.

incandescent lamp

It is an outdated illuminating element and is characterized by a low service life, a sharp dependence of the service life and light output on voltage, high power consumption and the fact that the color temperature lies in the range of 2300 - 2900 K, which leads to a yellowish tint. Incandescent light bulbs are already banned in many countries due to the need to save energy and also to reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

LED backlight

This is the best way illumination of the working surface, which is provided in many models of modern sewing machines designed for home use. Diode backlight differs from other lighting products in low power consumption, high color temperature and unlimited service life.

Dual LED

An additional set of LEDs can be built into the arm of the sewing machine for brighter illumination of the work surface. Most often, additional lighting is installed in the central part of the sleeve. This makes it possible to illuminate a much larger area than a single spot LED.

Additional special lighting

As a rule, additional special lighting is used in expensive sewing machines, and can be connected via a USB port. This lighting can be directed anywhere, and the lamp itself will be easy to fix on any part of the sewing machine using a suction cup.

incandescent lamp

Needle positioning

The complex concept of "positioning", which characterizes one of the functions of electronic sewing machines, is actually very simple.Typically, the needle position button looks like this:

And it works as follows. If you press it once, then the needle will always remain up at the end of sewing, i.e. the conductor will work. In this case, it is very convenient for you to form a thread, or switch to another operation. Well, if you press again, the needle will remain down (in the fabric). It will be convenient for you to turn the fabric to change the sewing direction.However, do not think that this feature limits your ability to manually turn the flywheel. If you need to manually go through some difficult area, then it can always be done.

Sewing field:

Usually it comes in two types: standard and enlarged. The size of the working surface in the sewing machine is set using the sleeve extension. Thus, depending on the size of the sleeve overhang, a product of a certain length can be processed on the surface of the sewing machine, i.e. the larger the sleeve, the larger the area of the material processed on the working surface. There are so-called sewing machines with an increased working surface, in which the distance between the needle and the bed should be more than 250 millimeters. In addition, the working surface can be increased by adding a side table. It is important to remember that the working surface should always be increased to the left of the needle. Those sewing machines that have a side table included are machines with an increased working surface.

Power consumption:

Some buyers of sewing machines, when choosing a model that could process very dense fabric and fabric folded in several layers, consider the power of the sewing machine as the main parameter. However, this is an erroneous opinion. The fact is that the power of the sewing machine is a total parameter, which is equal to the power consumed by the electronics unit and the lighting lamp. Therefore, if there is a heavy load, the motor starts to consume more current from the network. It is important to understand that all engines lose power. This option is not listed in technical passport device, but it exists, and represents the difference between the consumed electrical and mechanical power delivered. Modern sewing machines are equipped with motors that consume less power, but due to more accurate indicators of power consumed and lost, their efficiency will be much higher than that of outdated or budget engines. Typically, these types of motors are used in computerized sewing machines, where they work in conjunction with stepper motors, significantly reducing energy consumption, without losing power.

Presser foot pressure adjustment:

A mechanism that allows you to adjust the force with which the presser foot presses on the fabric. The pressure in certain cases is different: if thick tissue is being processed, then less force is needed to allow the tissue to pass; if the fabric is strong and thin, then more pressure is needed. When working with knitwear, the presence of such a mechanism is simply necessary. The fact is that knitwear is able to deform and stretch under the influence of the foot, but this should not be. The mechanism helps to create ideal pressure and does not allow the knitwear to stretch. In machines with a fabric conveyor built into the top, this regulator may not be used. Today you can find models of machines with a different principle of operation: switched using a regulator, through manual adjustment, with automatic switching according to the type of fabric and with fixing a constant pressure.

Needle standard:

Until recently, Overlocks and Sewing Machines were completed and sewn exclusively with branded needles that have their own standard and marking. Currently, all models on the market use universal needles for household overlockers and sewing machines. Modifications can be equipped with needles of standard 130/705H (standard) and ELx705 (larger eye size).

Removable arm platform:

"Hose platform" or "Free Sleeve"- this is the narrow part of the sewing machine (overlock) which is designed for convenient work with narrow and round productssuch as cuffs, sleeves, neckline and others. A conventional platform becomes a sleeve when the user removes the compartment (box) for accessories (it is removed or moved). The presence of this function greatly facilitates the process of working in hard-to-reach places.

Machine type:

Today, there are many classifications of modern sewing machines, for example, according to the degree of automation, they are non-automatic, fully automated and semi-automatic machines, which in turn are divided into cyclic and non-cyclic; and according to the method of operation and control, computerized, electronic and electromechanical sewing machines are distinguished.

computerized sewing machine

This modification of the sewing machine provides optical sensors for the position of the main shaft, a display, flash memory, a microprocessor and stepper motors that control the position of the needle bar and the stitch pitch. Due to the peculiarities of such control, there are no restrictions on the number of lines to be performed and their complexity. All sewing operations are stored in the machine's memory. This is very convenient, because with the help of simple manipulations on the electronic panel, you can quickly select and adjust the necessary sewing operation, and some sewing parameters are adjusted automatically.

Electronic sewing machine

This model of the machine has an electric drive and partially electronic and mechanical control. It can be controlled using electronic and mechanical controls and switches located on the plastic case in front. The sewing speed is regulated by means of an electronic regulator located on the body of the model, as well as with the help of an electronic pedal. The presence of an electronic sewing speed controller allows you to control the maximum number of revolutions. This is necessary to control the maximum sewing speed. The regulator reduces the risk of material damage. The electronic regulator can also control not only the sewing speed, but also monitor the location of the needle.

Electromechanical sewing machine

It is a sewing machine with mechanical control and electric drive. Such a machine is controlled by mechanical regulators and switches, which are located on its plastic case for convenience. Depending on how hard you press the rheostat pedal, you can adjust the sewing speed. By itself, the sewing speed does not change either up or down.

Overlock (overcasting machine)

This is a type of sewing technique that performs the functions of processing the crumbling edges of the fabric when sewing textiles. In one single pass, the overlocker can cut the edge of the product, stitch parts and overcast the cut. With the help of an overlock, the edge of the product acquires a finished and neat look. However, thanks to special knife installed in the overlock, the product is deprived of excess fabric, so it is not recommended to abuse the edge processing. As a rule, any textile product needs trimming and processing of edges, and it is simply not possible to work with fabrics with increased flowability and blooming without an overlock.

Coverlock

This is an overcasting machine that contains the functions of an overlock (performs overcasting stitches) and a cover stitching machine (it has the ability to perform knitted cover stitches). And all this is because the carpet lock has an additional looper, the so-called spreader. The most used carpetlocks are 4-thread and 5-thread, although it is not uncommon to find a carpetlock in which the number of threads reaches 12. An important advantage of the coverlock is its ability to produce decorative stitches. In addition, with its help, you can perform not only various flat seams (single-needle two-thread, two-needle three-thread narrow, etc.), but also overcasting and stitching-overlocking (two-thread line, three-thread, combination of 2-two-thread, three-thread role-playing seam, etc. .).
The only drawback of the coverlock is the changeover from the flat seam to overlock mode, which is not always convenient and can take some time, especially if the process sequence requires a constant change of seams. However, the overlock allows you to create more seams than an overlock. Therefore, when choosing between an overlock and a coverlock, it is necessary to clearly understand how much time will be spent on work, and which sequence of actions will be used more often.

Cover stitch (cover stitch) machine

Its work is based on the principle of a chain stitch, when a line is formed using the interaction of a needle and a looper. The cover stitch machine is mainly used for sewing seams on stretch knit fabrics, because it makes the cover stitch very high quality and reliable. As you know, such a seam can also be created using a conventional sewing machine, but with the addition of a double needle, or using a decorative stitch. However, the quality of a seam made on a conventional machine may not satisfy experienced users.
The advantage of cover stitching machines is their ability to work with both textured threads and polyester threads. The lines are always beautiful and even. With the help of a sewing machine, you can make decorative trims and attach an elastic band to sports trousers. The cover stitch can be sewn with 4 elastic flat stitches (triple flat stitch, wide flat stitch, narrow right stitch and left flat stitch). In such a machine, from one to three needles can be used.

Lubrication type:

As you know, lubricants are an essential attribute of any technique, including sewing. They are used in order to reduce the friction of the driving units and increase the life of the machine. The reliability of mechanical units and components of a sewing machine directly depends on the consistency and type of lubricants used. There are the following types of lubrication: centralized silicone, silicone and graphite.

graphite lubricant

This is the most common lubricant, the popularity of which is largely determined by its availability and optimally favorable price, which are the main advantages of this group of lubricants. Of the minuses, the following can be distinguished: firstly, this type of lubricant leads to increased friction of the driving units, and secondly, it may appear bad smell during processing, thirdly, the grease has a solid consistency and low lubricating properties.

Silicone Grease

The best type of lubricant that is used almost everywhere today. Silicone grease is obtained by synthesizing semi-liquid silicone oil and a chemical thickener. This grease does not have an erosive effect on lubricated units and does not corrode rubber seals. From positive qualities lubricants can be distinguished: high performance processing, lack of smell, improved work in rubbing knots and pairs, water resistance, sealing and a high range of operating temperatures.

Central silicone lubrication

Such a lubricant is used at a time and in one place, and then through special tubular channels it gets to those parts of the sewing machine that most of all need constant and timely lubrication. This type of lubricant is the most effective, as it assumes its uniform distribution (without smudges and flooding) to the necessary parts and assemblies.

Shuttle type:

Exist Various types shuttle, among which there are four main ones:

  • vertical rotary;
  • horizontal rotary;
  • vertical swing;
  • shuttle BERNINA 9.

During sewing, the hook of the sewing machine can oscillate or rotate in a vertical or horizontal plane. Based on the type of movement that the shuttle makes during sewing, it also has the corresponding names: horizontal rotating, swinging shuttle and vertical rotating double run.

Vertical oscillating shuttle

This type of shuttle is a classic, and has been installed on many sewing machines for decades, hence its name - classic. This type of shuttle is characterized by low vibration and noise characteristics during operation. In addition, it must be regularly lubricated. Of the advantages of the shuttle, it is worth highlighting the simplicity and familiarity of the design, which is much more convenient than horizontal shuttles. Thanks to the presence of an adjusting screw, which is responsible for the tension of the bobbin thread, the sewing machine can be adjusted to work with any type of material without the need for outside help. Majority modern manufacturers sewing machines still use the vertical oscillating hook in the proposed designs.

Horizontal rotary shuttle

This type of shuttle is installed in many models of modern sewing machines, but it has a number of disadvantages, for example, a straight line may deviate slightly to the side, and it is not possible to adjust the lower thread tension. In the first case, deviations occur due to the fact that the axis of rotation of the shuttle is located in a parallel plane of movement of the needle. And in the second case, the thread tension can only be adjusted by a service center specialist. Among the positive characteristics, one can single out the visualization of the remaining lower thread on the bobbin, the need for infrequent lubrication, smooth and quiet operation during rotation and ease of threading.

Vertical rotary shuttle

This type of shuttle is installed on premium sewing machines. Of the advantages of the shuttle, it is worth highlighting the excellent balance of comfort and manufacturability. The hook provides a perfectly even stitch path, is characterized by smooth and quiet operation, reliable design and ease of threading. The device does not require additional lubrication. Of the shortcomings, only the high cost of a machine with this type of shuttle can be distinguished.

Shuttle Bernina 9

As you know, the Bernina 9 shuttle, which is equipped with the new 7 series sewing machines, is considered an absolute world novelty, combining the advantages of two main types of shuttle. It is made from high quality materials that have undergone special processing. Expensive and meticulous polishing of every detail that comes into contact with the threads guarantees constant and optimal thread tension, as well as smooth movement of the entire mechanism.

The Bernina 9 hook has the positive characteristics of a vertical rotary hook, and also has an increased size, which allows you to wind 80% more threads on the retractable bobbin of the hook than on a regular one, so you can embroider and sew much longer with one full bobbin, once again without being distracted for its refill. Filling the Bernina 9 shuttle is much faster and easier than the vertical shuttle: just press a special key, after which the spool will come out of the spool holder on its own.

Manual thread trimmer

On the sleeve of the sewing machine is usually a special blade for manual thread trimming. After the user has completed the necessary operation, he must remove the material from under the presser foot, slightly tighten the upper and lower threads and cut them with this blade. Of the minuses of the device, it is worth noting the not quite ideal ease of use and high consumption of threads.

Automatic thread trimmer

The lower and upper thread cutter is located under the lower feed dog. It is proposed to set the knife in motion by pressing a special button. The advantages of the device include ease of use and significant savings in threads.

How to sew, and how to use a twin needle, how to thread two needles at the same time? The threads are threaded in the same way as with one needle, only two will be used instead of one spool. And both threads will pass through the same tensioner from above.

Stitched materials:

There are several types of stitched materials: heavy, extra heavy, light, extra light and medium. When using one or another stitched material, you should pay special attention to the set of threads and needles. It is also necessary to remember about several specific factors that affect the quality of sewing, as well as the simplicity and convenience of working with the material. Firstly, these are the maximum and minimum stitch lengths, secondly, the level of height and lift of the foot, thirdly, the required clearance between the nose of the hook and the tip of the needle, fourthly, the size of the hole in the needle plate and, lastly, the features of the lower conveyor .

Bottom Conveyor (Toothed Rack)

  • slightly rounded sharpening of the lower teeth makes it possible to work with ultralight and light materials (organza, chiffon);
  • the average degree of roundness allows high-quality processing of light knitwear and materials of medium thickness (linen, cotton, knitwear, suit fabrics);
  • with sharp sharpening of the teeth, you can use the most heavy and very dense materials (drape, bike, teak, denim) in your work.

It is worth remembering that some household sewing machines, suitable only for sewing heavy and medium materials (denim, leather, drape, etc.), cannot always be used for sewing thin delicate fabrics, and vice versa.
Modern universal sewing machines designed to work with different types materials, usually have the widest possible lower conveyor with moderately sharp rounded teeth, which significantly affects the market value of the model.

Stitch length
Not everyone knows, but the stitch length is one of the most important characteristics when choosing a sewing machine, since the maximum stitch length can be used to judge the possibilities of working with heavy and extra-heavy stitched materials (denim, leather, drape). So, the thicker the material being processed, the more it is necessary to feed the threads so that the sewing machine does not make passes during the sewing process. The best sewing machines have a stitch length of five to six millimeters, but most modern household machines have a maximum stitch length of no more than four millimeters.

Gap between the tip of the needle and the nose of the shuttle
It must be said right away that this gap should not exceed 0.3 millimeters, but in some cases it still exceeds this norm, reaching 1 millimeter, which is fraught with negative consequences. For example, gaps may occur when the spout passing next to the lap loop does not capture it. But other factors also influence the formation of the loop and its strong grip by the nose of the shuttle. Firstly, it is the quality of the needles and fabrics, secondly, the size and type of the needle, and thirdly, the tension of the threads (the correct and adjusted tension of the lower and upper threads is of great importance in achieving a perfectly even and high-quality stitch). However, the gap between the tip of the needle and the nose of the hook is the main characteristic that affects the stitch skip and, accordingly, the type of material being sewn. In the event that the gap is greater than the norm, it must be adjusted without fail, and if this fails, you can safely consider buying another sewing machine.

Needle plate hole size
The type of fabric being sewn can be determined by the size of the hole in the needle plate. The needle entry hole should be small when sewing ultra-light and light materials, this is necessary to prevent jamming of the material and failure of the fabric during the needle puncture. In addition, this size of the hole in the needle plate will allow you to achieve the perfect stitch path, which, in turn, is important for the appearance of the product. There are several types of needle plates: adaptive and additional. The optional needle plate allows you to manually adjust the size of the hole, making it possible to work with all types of fabrics.

Presser foot lift

This parameter determines the distance between the rail that advances the materials to be sewn and the presser foot of the sewing machine. Given the value of this parameter, it is easy to determine the thickness of the fabric that can be placed under the foot for further processing. It is important to understand that even if the material passes under the foot of the sewing machine, this does not mean at all that the latter will be able to process it with high quality. There are a number of factors that are critical to whether a sewing machine can process a given material.

heavy, extra heavy
