How to apply vinyl decal to glass. How to stick a sticker on a car, on glass, and also how to remove them

  • 12.06.2019

Today, there are different methods of tuning a car, but most of the options require serious financial investments.

Let's consider in more detail the external tuning of a car with the help of car stickers!

Stickers are one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to add some zest to a car, attract attention, and inform others about the special status of a car.

Depending on the purpose, there are such types of stickers as:

  • Graphic car stickers - a variety of graphic drawings and collages give free rein to self-expression and more subtly emphasize the inner world of the car owner.
  • Promotional - contain information of an advertising nature, for example, about the sale or purchase of goods with contacts.
  • Informational - these include stickers of taxi services, driving schools, government agencies.
  • Signs - they are glued, for example, novice drivers or parents carrying a baby in the cabin.
  • Humorous - you must have met motorists on the roads whose cars have inscriptions like “I often confuse pedals” or “First day behind the wheel”.

Films (glossy and matte) are also divided into:

  • special high-quality (designed only for application on glass),
  • reflective (visible at night),
  • light-accumulating (accumulate the energy of sunlight during the day and give it away at night in the form of a beautiful glow).

How to stick a sticker on a car - step by step instructions

For self-gluing, you will need the following tools:

  • glass cleaner, as well as a special tool if there are bitumen stains on the car,
  • a clean rag made of synthetic suede,
  • mounting tape,
  • ruler or tape measure
  • squeegee or plastic card,
  • scissors,
  • It is advisable to take a friend to help.

The temperature indoors or outdoors must be at least +10C. It is undesirable to carry out work in rainy wet weather.

Operating procedure:

1. Spray the glass with a glass cleaner and wipe it dry with a cloth.

If the situation suits, we apply a couple more strips of fixing film. Instead of a mounting film, you can use ordinary mounting tape. To make it easier to stick the auto-sticker, it is better to place the fasteners on the side of the central axis. This will allow you to stick first one half of the sticker, and then the second without creases.

3. Unfasten the fasteners on one side and start remove backing from sticker. We bend the edge of the substrate and begin to carefully remove it. We do this until the middle of the sticker.

4. We glue half of the sticker and iron it with a plastic card, moving from the center to the edge. When “bubbles” appear, the unsmoothed part can be peeled off and corrected.

5. Remove the fastening tape, since the sticker is already securely fixed.

6. Remove the paper backing from the second half of the sticker.

7. Glue the second half to the glass and iron again with a plastic card.

8. Peel off the transparent layer and slowly pull along the surface. We make sure that all the elements of our drawing remain on the glass.

At the end of the work, we iron a couple of times with a plastic card on the surface.

VIDEO INSTRUCTION

  • Rectangular and elongated stickers are easier to start sticking from the narrowest side.
  • Within 2 weeks, do not wash the glass under a pressure washer. This is necessary so that the adhesive layer has time to fully polymerize.
  • On the first day, give up fast driving - there is a high risk that the work will have to be done again.
  • If you decide to remove the sticker, heat it with a hair dryer (you can use a regular one, but an industrial one is better), and then it will come off easier. The adhesive remaining after removal can be removed with a solvent and a rag.
  • On dark-colored vehicles, the outline of the sticker will remain visible, as the paint will burn out a little during this time. To prevent this from happening, change the location of the sticker every six months.
  • Expect that the average life of the film is about 2 years.

In this example, I will describe 2 main ways to apply small applique stickers. At the bottom of the page I will post a video showing all the ways to stick all types of stickers. In 10 minutes you will learn everything you need to know. I recommend watching the video once to be aware. This may be of use to you. So, in the example you see 2 applique stickers. One of them is mirrored.

We will separate the first sticker from the substrate and glue it immediately. This method is suitable for small stickers. We pry off the corner of the sticker to grab the mounting film and separate it together with the application from the substrate. The surface to be applied must already be dry and clean.

The mounting film has a weak adhesive layer so that it can be easily removed from the surface leaving the application. At the same time, such glue is matched to remove the application from the substrate. We shoot in full.

Then we choose a place for gluing and, slightly pulling, apply to the surface. The tension is necessary so that the sticker lies without waves and bubbles. This is the most important point gluing. At this point, you can use water. Usually large stickers are applied to the water when the surface is uneven. At this size, no water is needed.

Then evenly press the sticker from the center to the edges. To do this, it is convenient to use a squeegee with a felt layer (as in the photo) or a plastic card wrapped in cloth. The fabric helps the squeegee to slide, and when sticking a printed sticker, it will not spoil it upper layer with ink. Printed stickers can only be pasted with cloth, hard objects will damage the surface.

On such glass it is very clearly visible where the sticker has already been glued (gray), and where it has not yet been glued ( White color). While the application is covered with a mounting sticker, it is necessary to press it as hard as possible. Then you need to take the mounting film around the corner and start removing it. Do not hurry. Make sure the application stays on the surface. At low temperatures and high humidity, the application adheres worse and may remain on the mounting layer. In this case, it is necessary to press down the sticker even more strongly and, if possible, warm it up with a hair dryer to 30 - 40 degrees. Press firmly again and try to remove the mounting layer. It should be easy to remove and not a single edge of the appliqué should move away after the mounting layer.

Glue the next sticker in a different way. We separate only part of the mounting layer, and bend the edge of the substrate inward. The free edge of the mounting layer will hold the sticker. You can also peel off other corners or use tape to secure and position the sticker.

If the sticker is positioned the way we want, we separate all other corners (or tape) and begin to draw out the substrate. At the same time, roll out the release sticker.

We stretch the entire substrate to the end, evenly pressing the sticker to the surface.

Smooth and press well. Remove the mounting layer.

The final look of our stickers. Because one of them is glued from the inside of the glass in a mirror image, it turned out as it was necessary. Why glue the sticker mirror? So that she was inside the cabin and not subjected to any influences. In the photo, the sticker pasted from the inside looks whiter, but with this use in a car, the effect is reversed. The fact is that car windows have their own transparency and are often slightly tinted. Because of this, the sticker will be gray. It will also stick to the heating lines and may damage them when removed. We do not recommend sticking stickers from the inside.

I also recommend watching a video about all types of stickers. I showed on it all the main ways of gluing. We also have instructions for each sticker. Therefore, do not worry - you will definitely glue everything yourself like a pro!)

How to stick a vinyl sticker

Important!
Before sticking the sticker, make sure that the selected surface is clean, dry, free of grease, dust and other contaminants that may prevent proper adhesion. We strongly recommend degreasing the surface. To do this, you can use a household degreaser or glass cleaner. Soap solution will also work. Simply wipe the surface to which the decal is applied. After degreasing, wipe the surface dry.
The sticker should be applied at a temperature environment not lower than +15 degrees. If the selected surface is car glass, then warm up the car interior and glass.

How is the sticker set up?

The sticker consists of three parts:

1. Mounting film. Transparent, has a weak adhesive layer directed down to the sticker. Serves to transfer the sticker to the surface to be decorated, then removed.

2. Vinyl sticker. It is located with a resistant adhesive layer down to the substrate.

3. Substrate. It is an opaque layer and serves as a protection for the adhesive surface of the sticker.

You will need the following tools to apply the sticker:
Scissors;
Plastic card or small plastic ruler or soft squeegee for smoothing;
Sticky tape or masking tape to secure the sticker.

How to stick a sticker on a car:

Step 4:
Peel off the masking tape previously pasted around the edges, and carefully and slowly begin to separate the remaining bottom of the backing (opaque layer) from the underside of the sticker. Gradually pull the backing down, making sure that all the elements of the image remain on the mounting tape. Along the way, be sure to smooth the lower, freed from the substrate, part of the sticker from top to bottom to the surface to be decorated with a squeegee or plastic card. If suddenly some fragment of the image has not moved away from the substrate, glue it again to the mounting film, iron it and try again. You can first completely separate the lower part of the substrate, without allowing the sticker to come into contact with the surface, and only then smooth it.

Ready! Now the sticker will decorate your interior or car, giving it a unique and original look.

The procedure for applying stickers to a car is no different.
from the procedure of applying it to the walls, video instruction

Instructions for applying full-color stickers:

Follow steps 1-2 to stick the sticker to the surface. Glue the upper part of the sticker to the surface by following step 3. Then remove the masking tape previously pasted along the edges, and carefully begin to separate the remaining lower part of the substrate from the inside of the sticker, smoothing the sticker with a squeegee or plastic card to the surface to be decorated from the middle to the bottom. That's all!

The sticker can be applied to an uneven surface of a complex shape, for this you need to smooth the sticker under a stream of hot air from a household hair dryer, so heat shrinkage will occur and the sticker will take the shape of the surface.

If a common person ask the master how to blow glass, he will answer that this is a delicate and difficult work. And what if you attach stickers to glass? It seems to be easy enough to do. But if you do not know how to stick stickers on glass correctly, air bubbles may form, the sticker will peel off and be damaged. appearance. Therefore, before applying it, you need to know some of the nuances. First you need to decide on a place for gluing the image. It is very important to prepare the surface for the image, for this it is necessary to clean the glass coating from dust and dirt deposits. In order for the procedure to go faster, the temperature in the room should be above ten degrees Celsius.

If the place for sticking is the glass of a car, then you need to read the article on how to protect windshield to avoid cracks and damage. Next, you need to degrease the surface with alcohol and apply a small amount of water to the selected surface with a sprayer. Water is needed so that if bubbles appear, you can easily, without deformation, remove them and straighten the sticker. If you stick the image in the "dry", then when you try to correct the shortcomings that have appeared, damage to the image is inevitable. This method with water will not work when the selected surface is the phone.

The reason is clear - moisture getting inside, on the phone circuit, can lead to its failure. Therefore, you should familiarize yourself with the rules on how to polish the glass on the phone. After cleaning the surface, a sticker is applied and the surface is smoothed from the center to the edges with a squeegee. Next, use a hair dryer to heat the sticker and the surface with a warm stream of air, taking into account that a small amount of water remains between the glass and the image. It is also necessary to leave the object with the image on long time for complete drying and setting of the adhesive layer with the glass surface.

If the sticker was applied to an ordinary piece of glass, then it must be left in a horizontal position, and not vertically, because due to water it can slide down a few millimeters and stick unevenly. Very often, stickers are used to decorate a glass surface, or to create decorative items using glass. In this case, after complete drying, additional knowledge is needed on how to cut a hole in the glass. this work requires a lot of attention and precision with the use of special tools, so it is better to entrust it to specialists.

OPTIONS FOR ADHESIVE VINYL STICKER ON A CAR

There are 2 sticking methods: dry and wet!

DRY way .

Cleaning the glued surface(glass or car body) from dust, grease and dirt. This can be done with an alcohol solution (but not on car enamel), better with white spirit or a cleaning agent. We take the sticker and bend the corner of the backing and, strongly bending it into reverse side, remove from the sticker. Then we carefully glue one edge, smoothing it with our fingers, a clean rag or a thin piece of felt, expelling air, gradually glue the rest. Hold the free edge with your hand to the last centimeter. If, nevertheless, a few bubbles remain, you can get rid of them by heating gently with a hairdryer, piercing with a needle, releasing air and pressing it against the car.

WET way.

1. Apply the sticker in the right place, see how it should be placed, how close to the edges of the surface. Decided on the exact location. You can even mark the location of the corners of the sticker with a pencil or make a precise horizontal line. It's good to have an extra pair of hands to help - it never hurts, especially when working with a large sticker. In winter, we stick only in a warm garage at home, with friends or in a parking lot in mall at a temperature not lower than +8. If on the street, then in calm weather or in the garage - any speck of dust or hair under the sticker can ruin everything.

2. First of all, it is necessary clean the glued surface(glass or car body) from dust, grease and dirt. This can be done with an alcohol solution (but not on car enamel), better with white spirit or a cleaning agent.
3. Remove the sticker, separating the bottom protective paper layer from the image - you will have the sticker itself (at the same time, try to take it away from the edges).
4. Pre treat the entire surface, in places where the sticker is attached to the car, and the sticker itself (from the adhesive side) with water and a light soapy solution from a sprayer 1:10 detergent FERY type. This will allow, after you attach the sticker to the car, move it a little, adjusting the location and easily expel all air bubbles from under the film. Do not be afraid - water is not a hindrance to glue, especially since you will then expel it from under the stickers.
5. Attaching the sticker to the car, roll evenly with a rubber squeegee (if it is not available, then a rubber spatula or a wooden ruler with sharpened ribs will do so as not to scratch the image). Start from the middle, expelling the remaining soap solution and bubbles to the edges. If, nevertheless, a few bubbles remain, you can get rid of them by heating with a hairdryer, puncturing with a needle and pressing them against the car. Small bubbles will disappear on their own, drying out within a week, if it is not winter outside, of course. Then smooth again with a cloth and wipe dry.
!!! ATTENTION!!!

At an ambient temperature of less than +8 degrees, the use of a hair dryer is strongly recommended, but do not overdo it with a hair dryer, otherwise the sticker will simply melt!!!

It is impossible to glue stickers at air temperature below +2 degrees!!!

6. And now you need leave the sticker alone for a day so that everything "grabs". Inspect in a day the entire surface of the sticker and, if necessary, go over it once more with a felt squeegee or a cloth and press, if necessary, the loose edges.
We do not recommend washing the car, or rather the area around the sticker, and the sticker itself for a week!!!

Stickers on a transparent film are also glued, only from inside the car, which ensures its greater safety, but given the transparency of the colors, such stickers are less noticeable.

How to wash already pasted stickers?

During the operation of the car, the stickers on it become dirty, especially for jeepers after rides. It is necessary to wash off the dirt only after pre-moistening with water., waiting for the softening of the plaque. Sprinkle the sticker with plenty of water and gently wipe off the dirt with a damp cloth.

(from the center outward, but not vice versa!!!).

Removing dirt with a dry cloth is FORBIDDEN- you can damage or scratch the paint layer on the sticker!

How to remove the sticker from the surface of the body?

Decided to change the sticker or it frayed over time. There is nothing complicated - we preheat it with a hairdryer and remove the sticker at an acute angle.< ». Остатки клея смываем уайт-спиритом, а если со стекла, то можно любой спиртосодержащей жидкостью.
