This misterious story occurred in Brazil in the 1960s, and it has not yet been possible to find an explanation for it (even to come up with any plausible version).

People in lead masks

One fine day, the bodies of two young people were found at the edge of a forest near Rio de Janeiro. Their identities were soon established. Manuel Pereira Cruz and Miguel José Viana (both electrical engineers by profession) lay among the trees in elegant suits and lead masks on their faces. The cause of death could not be established - it could have been both suicide and murder with equal probability.

A few days earlier, Cruz and Viana had traveled to Rio, where they intended to buy parts for their business and a new car. As the investigation established, they left the house with an impressive amount of cash and on the way stopped at a local supermarket, where they bought a bottle of water and a raincoat. The seller told the police that the guys were clearly nervous and in a hurry, every minute looking at the clock. After that, no one else saw them alive.

Lead masks that covered the faces of the dead

The bodies were found three days later. Young people lay in the woods dressed in suits and raincoats, their faces covered with makeshift lead masks without holes (like those used to protect against radiation). Two towels and a notebook lay on the ground next to the bodies. There was no money. V notebook there was only one entry that was even more confusing. It looked like the instruction:

16:30 - be at the appointed place
18:30 - swallow the capsules
After it works, put on lead masks and wait for the signal.

No traces of the substances that the guys apparently swallowed before their death could be found, and there were no signs of a violent death either.

Ufologists-Experimenters

During the investigation, it turned out that the dead worked as radio mechanics in a small workshop and were fond of paranormal activity, esoteric practices, searches for alien signals and UFO sightings.

Another hobby of theirs was the creation of radio equipment for communication with the other world. The investigation showed that the strange half-masks were made in an artisanal way in the workshop of the victims and were intended to protect, possibly from radiation.

Having studied in detail the notes in the notebooks, which mainly contained an extensive specification of various radio parts, the police decided that they had traces of some kind of strange experience that led to the death of the experimenters.

Nevertheless, the post-mortem examination did not find any traces of violence or extraneous influences, except for strange bluish streaks on the temples of the dead.

There were no signs of poisoning or radiation damage. Toxicological and histological analyzes gave negative results, therefore, a repeated detailed toxicological examination was not carried out.

Only later, at the request of the relatives of the victims, on August 25, 1967, the bodies were exhumed for re-examination, which again did not reveal any signs of violent death. However, the mention of certain "capsules" in the notes could still indicate the possibility of poisoning.

During the investigation, the police questioned Elcio Correira Gomez, who had previously participated in the experiments along with the dead. However, he categorically denied any involvement in the death of radio technicians and swore that he knew nothing about their trip to Niteroi.

An extensive esoteric library was found in the radio workshop of the dead, and in one of the books - "Scientific Medium" - pages were marked that described how to get a "bright glow of ectoplasm" (ectoplasm is a viscous substance that is supposedly released through the nose, ears, mouth of the medium and serving for the process of materialization of ghosts) and protect yourself from it with metal screens and masks.

Much later, in conversations with reporters, Sister Miguel recalled that on the eve of his departure, his brother often talked about preparing for some kind of "supernatural mission" that would make him rich and famous. The widow da Cruz said the same thing. Manuel, a few days before the trip, was very excited and was constantly discussing with his friend some kind of “final tests” for “going out into another reality.” In addition, we managed to find out that the friends went on a trip, taking money with them.

Dangerous "fireballs"

Today, the original hypothesis is popular that both radio technicians were killed by linear or ball lightning. On the evening of August 17, a severe thunderstorm occurred in the vicinity of Niteroi, accompanied by a real “lightning storm”. Local residents have long noticed that Vintham Hill, as it were, “attracts lightning”, which strikes its top much more often than in the surrounding hills.

Brazilian geophysicists suggest that this may be due to ironstone veins forming an ore nest, or to the fall of an iron-nickel meteorite that formed a vast depression at the top of the hill.

You can observe discharges of ordinary lightning a thousand times and never meet “round electricity”. About one in a thousand people encounter this unusual manifestation of an electrified atmosphere throughout their lives. At the same time, only a few can coherently and accurately describe what they saw.

In almost half of the cases, during the observation time, lightning has time to travel from one to ten meters. Three quarters of eyewitnesses reported that the lightning moved horizontally, in every fifth case it went down and only in every twentieth it went up. On average, it travels several meters per second, and it seems that its specific gravity is only slightly higher than that of air.

An analysis of many observations revealed a striking fact. It turns out that ball lightning appears at least once in a hundred powerful strikes of ordinary linear lightning. Meanwhile, tropical thunderstorms often accompany a kind of "lightning storm", when the discharges follow almost continuously. However, special expeditions that observed this impressive violence of the elements did not reveal any signs of the mass emergence of “round electricity”.

Meanwhile, it was precisely in those years in question that the idea that ball lightning was a kind of “alien probes” was especially popular among ufologists. It seems that this is exactly what the ill-fated radio technicians wanted to check. It is difficult to say what role metal masks played in their research, but being in them during a thunderstorm was extremely dangerous.

Indirectly, the hypothesis of a meeting with ball lightning is also confirmed by the testimony of a certain Gracinda di Sousa, who, on the evening of August 17, was driving with her children near the scene. Suddenly, her daughter Maria screamed that she "sees a satellite on the mountain." It must be said that in those years the successes of Soviet cosmonautics introduced this word into the international lexicon, and at first all UFOs were mistaken for satellites.

Then Gracinda saw on Vintham Hill a luminous yellow-orange ball, which slowly disappeared behind the bushes. Returning home, Madame di Sousa told her husband everything, who immediately drove to the hill and even climbed to its top. However, he found nothing there, except for the sharp smell of ozone, which occurs after a close lightning discharge. Subsequently, journalists discovered several more people who saw the flickering of light at the same time on the slopes of Vintham Hill.

Unknown accomplices

One of the mysteries of the "Lead Mask Case" is a handkerchief with the initials AMS clutched in da Cruz's hand and a button torn off from Viana's dapper jacket.

The version about unknown accomplices in the experiment is also confirmed by the testimony of local residents who saw a jeep drive up to the foot of Vintem Hill. The radio technicians got out of the car and began to climb the hillside, while the driver of the jeep turned off the engine and remained below.

The appearance of unfamiliar faces in this story led the police to a criminal version. According to it, the attackers took advantage of the esoteric enthusiasm of radio engineers and invited them to take part in a "parapsychological experiment." At the same time, the legend of fireballs that periodically appear on the top of the hill was told, and capsules were suggested that should be taken to enhance "extrasensory perception". So yes, Cruz and Viana drank poison, and their poisoners stole money.

Despite the simplicity and rationality of this police version, it is rejected by many independent experts, including the famous UFO researcher Jean Vallee. They believe that such explanations are beneficial, first of all, to the policemen themselves, who embezzled the radio mechanics' money.

Meanwhile, Brazilian journalists found information about a very similar case in the police archives. In 1962, Ermes Juarez, a television technician from Rio de Janeiro, was found lifeless on the nearby hill of Cruzeiro. In his stiff hand was a metal mask, reminiscent of the ones on the faces of da Cruz and Viana.

The cause of his death was also not clear, although someone saw that before heading to the top of the hill, the telemaster swallowed some kind of "pills". Based on this, the police closed the case as a suicide. It is curious that Juarez devoted all his free time to finding funds to organize a "radio bridge with the other world."

Employee performance law enforcement largely depends on the formation and development of professionally significant cognitive qualities. The detective tasks presented here, previously published in the journals "Science and Life", "Shield", "Tasvir", "World of Crime", etc., allow to develop attention, observation, intelligence and resourcefulness to a certain extent ...

These tasks are loved by everyone and at all times. Some see them as a kind of "mind gymnastics", a means of satisfying the natural need for every thinking person to experience and exercise the power of their own mind. Others are attracted by the elegant literary shell: the plot of logical problems is often very entertaining. Still others consider the main advantage of this kind of tasks to be their accessibility: one can often hear that solving logical problems does not require special knowledge, but only a certain level of development, the ability to think logically, acquired and developed, like any other skill, by persistent exercises.

Naturally, by solving such tasks, you will not master the skills of solving and investigating real crimes, but these tasks will help you develop in yourself, to a certain extent, observation, logical thinking, which are so necessary in practice, and in Everyday life each person.

Antique glass theft
- I absolutely cannot imagine, Mr. Inspector, who could need a glass of the 17th century, especially since it is impossible to sell it. - With these words the director of the museum met Inspector Varnike. The glass was in place last night. Nobody came into the room after me. I locked it myself. The museum is cleaned by the Zeisigs, they have been working for us for a very long time and, of course, beyond all suspicion.
“Yes, Herr Inspector, everything was in order during the evening cleaning,” said Herr Zeisig.
