Basic Orthodox prayers - Irzeis. Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me a sinner prayer

  • 29.09.2019

Here are the words of the Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." A shorter form is also used: "Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me." Bishop-martyr Ignatius incessantly repeated the name of Jesus. The Jesus Prayer is also meant to be recited continuously. This is how the direct call of the apostle is carried out: "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

How does the Jesus Prayer become an unceasing prayer? We begin by continually repeating the words: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." We can repeat them out loud, very quietly, or just to ourselves. From experience, we will soon notice that it is not at all so easy to make unceasing prayer. This needs to be practiced with purpose. We can set aside a certain time of the day for the creation of the Jesus Prayer. It is also good to include the Jesus Prayer in our prayer rule. So, when reading morning prayers, we can read it ten times before each prayer. Sometimes, immediately after the opening prayers, you can read the Jesus Prayer instead of the morning prayers and repeat it, for example, for 5 or 10 minutes, that is, during the time that is usually necessary for reading the morning prayers. During evening prayers we too can practice the Jesus Prayer.

But the Jesus Prayer is exceptional in that it is not a prayer intended only for a certain time. The Orthodox prayer book says about her: “During work and during rest, at home and during the journey, when we are alone or among others, always and everywhere repeat in your mind and heart the sweet name of the Lord Jesus Christ, saying this: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

But is it possible? Can anyone so devote himself to prayer that he will actually carry out this instruction?

The best answer to this question can be found in the book "Wanderer's Tales", which has been published in many languages, and since 1979 also in Finnish. In the next chapter we will return to a practical exercise in the Jesus Prayer, but now we will take a deeper look at the prayer itself.

If we include the Jesus Prayer in our prayer rule, we will notice, even after a brief exercise, that when we say it, it is easier for us to concentrate our thoughts than when we read other prayers. The advantage of the Jesus Prayer and other short sighs of prayer is that they are better than others containing a variety of thoughts, give the opportunity to concentrate. Saying the Jesus Prayer between other prayers helps us to read them with more concentration.

The Jesus Prayer is said to be a perfect prayer, since it contains the same basic truths of our salvation as the sign of the cross, namely, our faith in the Incarnation and in the Holy Trinity. By pronouncing the words "Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God," we confess that our Savior is both man and God. After all, the name "Jesus" was given to Him as a man by His Mother, and the words "Lord" and "Son of God" point directly to Jesus as God. The second basic truth of our Christian faith - the Holy Trinity - is also present in prayer. When we refer to Jesus as the Son of God, we are referring to God the Father and the Holy Spirit at the same time, because, according to the apostle, "no one can call Jesus Lord but by the Holy Spirit" (1 Corinthians 12:13).

The Perfect Prayer of Jesus is also called because it contains two aspects of Christian prayer. When we say "Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God", we seem to raise our thoughts to the glory, holiness and love of God, and then humble ourselves in the feeling of our sinfulness to repentance: "Have mercy on me a sinner." The opposition between us and God is expressed in the word "have mercy." In addition to repentance, it also expresses the consolation given to us, that God accepts us. The Jesus Prayer, as it were, breathes with the confidence of the apostle: "Who condemns? Christ Jesus died, but also rose again: He is also at the right hand of God, He also intercedes for us" (Rom. 8:34).

The heart of the Jesus Prayer - the name of Jesus - is precisely the saving word: "And you will call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21).

3) Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos

O, Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord, Queen of heaven and earth! Behold, immersed in sin and overwhelmed with sorrow, looking at Your image, as if you live with us, we offer our humble prayers. No other help, no other intercession, no consolation, only to You, O Mother of all those who grieve and burdened! Help us weak, quench our sorrow, guide us, the erring, on the right path, heal and save the hopeless, grant us the rest of our life in peace and silence. 4) Prayer to the Archangel of God Michael

Lord, Great God, King without beginning, send Your Archangel Michael to help Your servants (name). Protect us, Archangel, from all enemies visible and invisible.

Oh Lord, Great Archangel Michael! Demon crusher, forbid all enemies fighting me, and make them like sheep. And humble their evil hearts and crush them like dust in the face of the wind.

Oh Lord Great Archangel Michael! Six-winged first prince and governor of the heavenly forces, Cherubim and Seraphim, wake us an assistant in all troubles, sorrows and sorrows, a quiet haven in the desert and on the seas!

Oh Lord Great Archangel Michael! Deliver us from all the delusions of the devil, whenever you hear us, sinners, praying to You and calling on Your Holy Name. Hasten help to us and overcome all those who oppose us by the power of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, the prayers of the holy Apostles, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Andrew Christ for the sake of the Holy Fool, the holy prophet Elijah and all the holy great martyrs, the holy martyrs Nikita and Eustathius and all our venerable fathers, who have pleased God from time immemorial, and all the holy powers of heaven.

Oh Lord Great Archangel Michael! Help us sinners (name) and deliver us from a coward, fire, a sword and from vain death, from great evil, from a flattering enemy, from a storm that is reproached, from the evil one, deliver us always, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Holy Archangel Michael of God, with Your lightning sword, drive away from me the evil spirit that tempts and torments me.

5) Prayer to Nicholas the Pleasant

Oh, all-good Father Nicholas! Shepherd and teacher of all who by faith flow to your intercession, and call you with warm prayer! Soon rush and deliver the flock of Christ from the wolves that are destroying it, and protect every Christian country and save with your saints prayers from worldly rebellion, coward, invasion of foreigners and internecine warfare, from famine, flood, fire, sword and vain death. And as if you had mercy on three men sitting in prison, and delivered them from the king’s wrath and the cutting of the sword, so have mercy on me, mind, word and deed in the darkness of the sins of the land, and deliver me the wrath of God and eternal punishment; as if by your intercession and help, by His own mercy and grace, Christ God will give us a quiet and sinless life to live in this world, and save me from standing, and vouchsafe the right hand with all the saints. Amen.

6) Prayer to Seraphim of Sarov

O wonderful Father Seraphim! The great Sarov miracle worker, a hasty assistant to all who resort to you. In the days of your earthly life, no one is thin and inconsolable from you when you leave, but for everyone in the sweetness there was a vision of your face and a benevolent voice of your words. To this, the gift of healing, the gift of insight, the gift of weak souls of healing is abundant in you. When God called from earthly labors to heavenly tranquility, no more than your love ceased from us, and it is impossible to count your miracles, multiplied like the stars of heaven: behold, at all ends of our earth, you are the people of God and grant them healing. The same and we cry out to you: O pretentious and meek servant of God, bold to Him in prayer, never calling you away! Offer up your pious prayer for us to the Lord of forces! May it grant us all that is useful in this life and be useful for spiritual salvation, may it protect us from the falls of sin and true repentance, may it teach us how to unstumblingly enter us into the eternal Kingdom of Heaven, even though you now shine in imperishable glory, and there sing with all saints Life-Giving Trinity forever and ever. Amen!

7) Prayer to the Guardian Angel

Holy angel of Christ, I pray to you, my holy guardian, devoted to me to keep my soul to my sinful body from holy baptism, but with my laziness and my evil habit I angered your most pure lordship and drove you away from me with all the studish deeds: lies, slander , envy, condemnation, prehorstvo, disobedience, fraternal hatred and rancor, love of money, adultery, rage, stinginess, gluttony without satiety and drunkenness, verbosity, evil thoughts and crafty, proud custom and lustful rage, having self-lust for every carnal desire. Oh, my evil will, even the dumb beasts do not create it! But how can you look at me, or come to me, like a stinking dog? Whose eyes, Angel of Christ, look at me, entwined with evil in vile deeds? Yes, how can I ask forgiveness for my bitter and evil and crafty deed, I fall into it all day and night and at every hour? But I pray that, falling to the keeper of my saint, have mercy on me, your sinful and unworthy servant (name), be my helper and intercessor for the evil of my opponent, with your holy prayers, and make the Kingdom of God a partaker of me with all the saints, always, and now, and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus Prayer

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"

(This is the famous Jesus Prayer, which is prayed by repeating it many times)

"Mr.dee, Jesus Behold Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner" Seems like a simple prayer. But confessors urge their children to be very careful in using it. On what conditions is it possible for the laity to use the Jesus Prayer? Archpriest Georgy Breev, confessor of the Moscow clergy, rector of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Krylatskoye, reviewer of the four-volume collection of ascetic literature “Jesus Prayer. The experience of two millennia.

Extraordinary strength

The tradition of using in prayer words addressed to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ begins from the Gospel times, when people who met Christ turned to Him with their requests. The closest disciples of Christ - the apostles saw and knew the effectiveness of such an appeal. Thus, the first Christians began to call on the Name of Christ both in church and private prayer, and this tradition was never diminished. The prayer, which we now call the Jesus Prayer, took shape in familiar words later, when especially zealous ascetics began to leave the world for the wilderness. Calling on the Name of God was a living need for them. The experience of these ancient fathers is captured in the books of the Philokalia.

Exist different opinions about who and how can perform the Jesus Prayer. Some saints believed that she had an extraordinary power to transform the human mind and heal the soul. Provided, of course, a reasonable and responsible attitude towards it. They advised the use of this prayer not only for hermits, but also for all Christians living in the world, even just beginning their spiritual life. It was believed that if this prayer, which belongs to the family of the repentant, is performed with heartfelt attention and constantly, it will be beneficial and cleanse from many sins even people who are spiritually not very high. Other fathers, on the contrary, believed that not everyone can use this prayer. Especially if you take it into service and use it constantly. Because, just as a flame, flaring up, requires more and more fuel, so constantly praying from the heart, gaining strength, requires from a person more and more complete dedication, more and more new steps, devoting oneself to prayerful doing, later called smart doing. And you need to be especially prepared for it - fasting, abstinence from extraneous entertainment and strict observance of the commandments of Christ are required. Without such a foundation, prayer can bring spiritual harm.

From The Philokalia we know that one of the highest levels of mental prayer is contemplation. This is such a special state, which the holy fathers spoke of as the threshold of the Kingdom of God. The soul is so exalted and cleansed of passions that it, mysteriously united with Christ through prayer, becomes able to see Him. But for us this doing is too high. We can learn about these states only from books. Ascetics close to us in time say that modern man who has lost the integrity of life, can no longer claim to make such steps of mental prayer. Therefore, when some people - this is especially characteristic of neophytes - fervently take up the invocation of the Jesus Name of the Lord in prayer, they may be exposed to all kinds of dangers that they will not be ready to accept.

Every believer wants to pray. St. Gregory Palamas says: how many human souls there are in the world, so many levels and images of prayer. Everyone brings his inner experience, his feelings into prayer. And everyone's experiences are different. One from childhood has a spirit of prayer, from nature, from the grace of God - he can pray right away. Another needs a big one life path pass, and only in the middle of this path will he understand that he must pray. And he will begin to take small steps with difficulty, to comprehend the basics.

Prayer is food. If a person is alive, he needs food. Still, we feed ourselves with food more than once a day. It is the same spiritually - the soul also needs food. But what is needed here is understanding, a living need to drink living water, and not a formal side, not a habit, not a ritual. living water is the word of God. When there is this thirst, then the correct structure of prayer begins. God himself builds it. Because it is said that without the action of grace we cannot pray, we cannot even turn to God “Abba Father”, according to the Apostle Paul, without the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us a prayer in our hearts - puts and turns to God the Heavenly Father, to Christ.

For people who love prayer, even their appearance changes, whether they are laymen or monastics. Of course, appearance is not a very convincing factor, but all the same, it is usually clear from a person if he is a prayer book.

Prayer is the path that brings a person to God. And, if a person stops half way, he may lose what he has already gained. Prayer brings up high, subtle nobility. The soul becomes rational, retreats from gross passions, begins to see clearly, strengthens in faith. The Holy Spirit works both in prayer and in Holy Scripture. A person begins to see the wondrous harmony of the Divine Word, Scripture. Because prayer prepares the heart of a person, like a vessel, which then contains all the gifts of the grace of the Holy Spirit. Without prayer, this cannot be achieved. The good fruit of prayer is pacification of the heart, when the heart becomes pure. A pure heart will see God. A person begins to see in himself the action of passions and the action of the grace of God, begins to discern what comes to him from fallen spirits. Then, if a person really does not work in vain, he begins to see the essence of things. If a Christian walks the path of prayer with zeal and humility, he will be accompanied by spiritual fruits.

Thoughtful and careful

I think that the laity can take up the Jesus Prayer. But you need to do it according to your strength, a little and constantly. Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov and the last Optina elders taught that modern man should approach the Jesus Prayer very thoughtfully, very carefully and simply. Do not strive to immediately achieve some states - enlightenment of the soul, mind. Prayer must be done in simplicity of heart. During my pastoral service, there have already been several cases when, on the recommendation of a young priest, people began to pray unceasingly and as a result came to an extremely distressed situation, to a mental disorder, to a state from which they themselves could no longer get out. There were even cases when people committed suicide only because they zealously took up this smart doing, for which they were not ready.

First you need to gain experience in prayer in general, and only then gradually move on to the Jesus Prayer. But setting yourself high goals is extremely unreasonable. Even imitating the saints in prayer will be detrimental to us. Back in the 4th century, St. John of the Ladder warned that we need to read and be edified by the high spirit of the saints, but to imitate them in prayer is the height of madness. Because a person should not have his own desire, but a prompting by the Spirit of God. Therefore, I always warn: if there is desire and zeal, then first you need to learn what prayer requires - attentiveness, concentration, restraint and prudence.

After all, we are not worthy of the words that we read in prayer. I'm not even worthy to turn to God. Lord, how can I now stand before You? And this anticipation is prayer. His dominion is in every place; bless the Lord, my soul. The place of "His dominion" is where I pray.

How not to get fed up?

First you need to learn sincere, simple, pure prayer. Because many, starting to read the morning and evening rule, quickly get tired of it. They say that it's already boring, that they don't feel anything. They ask permission to pray in their own words. Well, pray in your own words. But the word of prayer must be true, must glorify. One of the saints said that in prayer a person should be united with the word in the same way as the soul is united with the body. See what a deep image. If this unity does not exist, then prayer becomes boring to us. It seems formal, cold, and words do not go to the soul. And all just because a person has not developed the right approach to prayer. I didn’t survive, I didn’t feel prayer in myself. Even if you once experienced some kind of prayer image, it is forgotten. And it is very easy to go into the mechanism, to perform one ritual side - pronounce, speak, read, but not pray.

Prayer requires interest, attention, thirst for prayer, and truthfulness. Prayer is a living need. On this day, at this moment, I need to express myself in prayer, stand before God and say: “Lord, here I am standing in front of you, my day passed in a fuss, I somewhere lost my inner freedom, somewhere unnecessary thoughts , I gave myself up to worries, I had troubles and so on. As we are, that is how we should turn to God. Life itself teaches us prayer, God teaches us, the Church teaches us. These lessons should not be missed. Only then will we really begin to understand what the Jesus Prayer is. “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner” - this will be a cry. This is actually my whole nature, concentrated in the living Lord, this is the flow of my inner energies rushing out. Then, please, pray the Jesus Prayer at least day and night. Then the Jesus Prayer will take effect.

When a person really loves prayer, when his spirit is kindled, then, according to the teachings of St. Ignati, the Jesus Prayer will begin to move from a verbal form to a heartfelt one. And heartfelt prayer, if it is brought with attention, will begin to capture the intelligent spheres of the soul. Only in this way can mental-heart prayer become accessible to modern Christians who have devoted themselves entirely to God. Priests, monks, pious lay people, who are removed from everyday worries and sorrows, can take this Divine gift and perform mental-heart prayer with benefit for the soul.

I recommend starting this way: move away from the usual fuss - from the radio, TV, retire to a quiet place where you can tune in to prayer. If over time you begin to seriously engage in the Jesus Prayer, you need to look for those people who have experienced this path, and discuss all your states with them. A beginner needs a helper. Because the activity of the spirit affects both the soul and the mental state, and nervous system. It awakens in the soul many such movements, which, perhaps, did not exist before. When a person constantly makes mental prayer, the innermost begins to awaken in him, which a person in his practice may not have encountered. There is such a law in the physical world - the more powerful and the greater some kind of energy movement, the more the surrounding spheres are involved in it. So is the Jesus Prayer. If done with some effort, with some tension, then it can awaken a lot from the sensory world and from the world of imagination, especially if we do not have a feeling of repentance. All the negativity that is still hidden will set in motion and can adversely affect the state of mind of a person.

It is possible to determine whether a person is going the right way in his prayer work by the fruits. Pride of mind can become the fruit of wrong prayer. A person begins to do everything for show, tries to show everyone that he prays for a long time, that he knows how to do the Jesus Prayer. The Gospel says: if you want to offer God a prayer of the heart, “... enter into your cell, and having shut your doors, pray to your Father, who is in secret: and your Father, seeing in secret, will reward you with truth” (Matt. 6: 6) . If a person does not enter his inner cell with humility, with deep faith, with a repentant feeling, with attention, then this occupation will result in him either in hypocrisy or in proud self-affirmation. Often in such a situation, people begin to have a nervous breakdown, noticeable from the outside - nervous sudden movements, excitability, a desire to prove something, to argue. This also shows that a person is doing prayer incorrectly.

Can't enter into spiritual world without discussion. Each step must be tested both by the spirit of the Gospel and by the spirit of the commandments of the Lord, by the tradition and teaching of the Church, and by the thoughts of the holy fathers. A person must have a clear state of mind so that he sees the right and wrong paths.

Self-propelled doing

In prayer there is a unity of all our abilities. Sometimes a person's imagination is activated, and it seems to him that this is spiritual soaring. In fact, it may not be spiritual, but only dreamy. Confessors, doers of the Jesus Prayer, have always warned against this temptation.

I believe that the use of the rosary in the creation of the Jesus Prayer is necessary and very important. When your fingers hold the rosary and you say a prayer verbally, this helps to direct all your strength to prayer, not to dissipate. Hearty attention, verbal pronunciation of prayer, sorting out the rosary - all this together helps to involve all the forces of the soul in prayer. Even when the thought is ready to move away, you feel that the bead does not give you. You hold her tightly, and through this feeling of the order of prayer, she helps even thoughts not to dissipate.

If, while reading, prayers merge into a verbal mass and you stop understanding it, such a prayer must be stopped. As soon as when reading a prayer there is a confusion of thought, inattention or some kind of apathy - it seems that I don’t want to read, I can’t - that’s all, I must immediately stop. It is better to read fifty prayers and calm down than to read three hundred at the level of mechanical movement.

Sometimes you can read the Jesus Prayer in the service. Those who are engaged in prayer can come to such a level - when you sleep, you wake up, and the prayer continues. You don’t even know if it ended or didn’t stop and goes on by itself. And when a person reaches such a state, he can even stand at the liturgy, listen carefully to the words of the liturgical prayers, and the words themselves sound in the heart: “Lord Jesus Christ the Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” This is self-propelled prayer. It comes from the attentive, reverent invocation of the Name of God, when prayer captures all levels of the subconscious.

The Jesus Prayer is very important for any Orthodox believer. It can be called one of the initial steps in the formation of faith. The power of the Jesus Prayer is enormous. Its essence lies in the fact that a praying person asks for mercy from God through his Son. This powerful prayer can be used for any life's difficulties and become a daily amulet for the believer.

Who is Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the central person of the Christian faith. AT Old Testament the appearance of the Messiah was predicted, who became the atoning sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. Information about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ is contained in the Books of the New Testament. The fact that Jesus Christ was a real person is evidenced by the works of non-Christian authors.

According to Christian teaching, Jesus Christ is the consubstantial Son of God incarnated in human flesh. The doctrine states that Jesus Christ died to atone for human sins, after which he rose from the dead and ascended to heaven. In addition, there is a statement that the Messiah will definitely come again in order to judge the living and the dead.

Jesus Christ was born in an extraordinary way. An angel descended to the virgin Mary, who had vowed to preserve her virginity in the name of serving God, but at the same time was betrothed to Joseph, and said that she would soon give birth to a son who would be the Son of the Lord. And although Mary was surprised, she accepted God's decree that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and she would conceive from the power of the Most High. Joseph wanted to let go of his pregnant wife, because he knew that he was not close to her. But the Angel, appearing to him in a dream, said that Mary would give birth to a son from the Holy Spirit. His name should be Jesus, he will come to earth to save people from their sins.

When Jesus was thirty years old, God the Father called Him to his ministry. From that time on, Jesus walked the earth for about three years. He preached the Kingdom of God and performed various miracles. He was able to heal terminally ill people and cast out demons. His earthly ministry was almost always accompanied by a variety of miracles. According to the preached teaching of God, Jesus called people to repentance and said that all sins would be forgiven. He talked about eternal life and the grace of God. He also spoke about the fact that everyone will have to stand before the court and that a righteous life is the truth that will give salvation. Jesus taught the importance of being sincere with God and the need for all people to live in peace.

Jesus got many followers. Most aspired to learn wisdom from him, as well as to deeply accept and understand the Divine Truths. Jesus told his followers that he would be killed, but then he would surely resurrect. And so it happened, although it was inaccessible to many for understanding.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God in the form of a man, voluntarily appeared on earth. He lived a sinless life, suffered terrible suffering and suffered death on the Cross, paying for the sins of every person. After that, as a sign of justification and forgiveness of the human race, he resurrected. This suggests that sincere faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior will allow us to receive forgiveness for known and unknown sins and eternal life.

Sometimes there is an opinion that the Jesus Prayer should be read only by monks. For the laity, reading it is useless. Actually it is not. This prayer should always be present in the prayer practice of the laity, as an auxiliary means of prayer for communion with God. The value of this prayer lies in its brevity.

It is known that the laity have to spend a lot of time in public transport, walking, waiting in lines, and doing household chores. And this time should not be spent in vain, namely, to do the Jesus Prayer, which has both a short and a long form. This prayer is for the penitent. Therefore, if you read it with heartfelt attention, sincerely and constantly, then it will cleanse even people with low morality from many sins.

The History of Prayer

The tradition to include in prayer the words by which people are addressed to the Lord and Savior of people, Jesus Christ, is rooted in evangelical times. When Christ walked the earth, talking about his teaching, many people turned to him with their own requests. And only the disciples of Jesus Christ understood the effectiveness of such a verbal appeal.

That is, already the first Christians called to the name of Christ, both in private prayer and in church. It is believed that the prayer, which is now called Jesus, took shape at a time when the followers of Christ began to go to pray in the desert. It was in such a secluded place that the call to the name of God became a vital necessity for them. The modern text of the Jesus Prayer was recorded for the first time in Crete by the Orthodox Saint Gregory of Sinai.

How often should you read a prayer?

When reading in church, the Jesus Prayer is limited to a certain number of times, depending on the type of worship being held. But with independent reading, each believer decides on his own how many times to say the prayer text, listening to his subconscious and inner feelings. If calmness spreads in the soul and joy appears, everything petty and insignificant in the surrounding world fades into the background, which means that the Jesus Prayer has been read a sufficient number of times.

The peculiarity of the Jesus Prayer is that it opens up new possibilities in faith. This allows the believer to climb the stairs and come closer to a true understanding of God. It is only very important at the same time to pronounce the prayer text in full concentration of attention on your spiritual world.

Is it possible to read it with the rosary?

The Jesus Prayer is recommended to be read with the rosary. This allows you to create a reliable prayer shield. In some cases, clergy recommend pronouncing prayer words on the rosary, until there is a feeling that the prayer is done independently without internal coercion. This is what indicates that a protective barrier has been created.

It is important to always carry these beads with you. They will be a reminder to pray. Before you start praying with the rosary, you need to ask the priest for a blessing. It is he who will tell you how many times you need to pronounce the text of the Jesus Prayer.

Does it help in protection from damage and evil?

The Jesus Prayer is the surest way to get rid of corruption and witchcraft. But only for this you need to use a long version of the prayer.

In addition, when reading a prayer, the following recommendations should be followed:

  • Prayer must be memorized by heart, so as not to get confused when listing the names of the Saints. Words must come from the depths of the soul, so you need to understand what you are asking God for. To do this, you should get acquainted with those Saints who are mentioned in prayer;
  • If for some reason it is not possible to learn the text of the Jesus Prayer, then it is allowed to copy it onto a white sheet and read it;
  • Prayer phrases must be spoken clearly and confidently;
  • It is important to read the Jesus Prayer in complete solitude, taking care that no external problems arise.

Listen and read 100 times a day

In order to get rid of external negativity, it is recommended to listen or read the Jesus Prayer at least 100 times a day. When praying for the right mood, it is better to use a rosary. It must be understood that the removal of damage or the evil eye takes a long time.

As a rule, the first positive results become visible only after a month. Moreover, not a single day can be missed, prayer should be done daily.

Psalm 26 - Protective Prayer

Together with the Jesus Prayer, Psalm 26 can be read. This is a very powerful protective appeal to God. In this combination, prayers can very quickly remove damage and put reliable protection for the future. You can pray like Old Church Slavonic and use translated texts.

Psalm 26 reads as follows:

“The Lord Most High, my Savior, my Enlightener: whom do I fear? Lord Almighty, You are the reliable protector of my whole life: whom will I fear? When terrible villains approach me to harm my flesh, when my enemies and my offenders try to bring evil to me, then they themselves will fall from it. If a whole regiment opposes me, my heart does not tremble with fear, and if my enemies raise weapons against me, then I will only hope in God. I will only ask the Lord Most High for one thing: that he grant me a calm and joyful life in the Lord's house, that I constantly contemplate the beauty of the Lord and visit His holy temple. For I know that he will hide me under his cover in the day of my misfortunes and calamities. And at the moment of my salvation, he will raise my head above my enemies, I will exclaim praise and exclamations to him. All my life I will sing and praise the Lord. Hear, O Lord Almighty, my prayer and have mercy on me. My heart says to me: I will call on the Lord. Please do not turn Your face away from me and do not refuse me, do not reject me and do not leave me, Almighty Lord of Heaven, My Savior! Even my father and my mother will leave me, but the Lord God will receive me. I ask You, guide me, Lord Almighty, guide me on my path and on the righteous path for the sake of victory over my enemies. Do not betray, O Lord Almighty, delivered my oppressors away from me, for I was subjected to their unjust attack. I sincerely believe that I will see the blessings of the Lord in the lands of the living. I trust in the Lord Almighty, take courage and stock up on patience, in endless ecstasy in the Lord. Amen".

How to Pray to Jesus Christ, the Son of God

For the Jesus Prayer to be effective, it is necessary to pray correctly. The main obstacles in this case are absent-mindedness and everyday fuss. It is unlikely that you will be able to learn the Jesus Prayer if a person has an addiction to TV or the Internet. A person for whom the main pastime is connected with listening to music and communicating on social networks will not be able to pray correctly. All everyday hobbies fill the mind and heart and at the same time do not allow a person to correctly and purposefully turn to God with prayer.

In order to pray to Jesus Christ correctly, it is important to tune in accordingly. Prayer to the Lord is practically meditation. At the time of the prayer appeal, you need to completely renounce the events of the surrounding world. Only in this way can one approach God and count on effective communication.

In order for our prayer to be heard by God, it must be filled with the inner energy of a person. It is necessary before making a prayer to free the soul from sinful thoughts, anger, hatred, envy. It is necessary to mentally ask for forgiveness from your loved ones, as well as forgive them.

The success of a prayer appeal depends on how much you understand the spoken text with your mind. Before praying, it is necessary to understand and feel each prayer word, to delve into the meaning of the spoken phrases and to transfer knowledge to your soul.

Degrees of Perfection in the Jesus Prayer

The Jesus Prayer is a very complex spiritual prayer. It is divided into four steps.

Understanding them makes the believer stronger in his faith:

  • The first step is bodily, oral prayer. This is a very difficult step that requires a strong concentration of thoughts. As a rule, the believer feels that thoughts run off to the side, and the heart does not feel the prayer words. During this period, a person during prayer needs to show great patience and make a lot of work. This stage is very important, as it gives a person a repentant attitude.
  • The second stage involves the unification of the mind and feelings. During this period, a person can already pray continuously and at the same time feels how his soul is filled with new feelings. The believer has a need to pray in every free minute.
  • The third step is a creative prayer appeal, with the help of which it is already possible to bring the desired closer. At this stage, prayer is very effective.
  • The fourth step is a high prayer, which only Angels can do, and the ability to which is awarded to only one person for all of humanity. In the process of prayer, there are no barriers to communication with God.

All Orthodox Christians know the Jesus Prayer. The clergy explain to believers that this prayer has tremendous power that can lead a person to paradise. Of course, it should be understood that this prayer can only be effective for righteous people. Reading the Jesus Prayer, they will feel how their souls are filled with joy, and peace and love come into life.

The Jesus Prayer is a powerful weapon for the salvation of man. But everyone who is going to do it should understand that demons do not like this prayer and are trying to harm a person who is learning to turn to God with it. Therefore, we should expect many temptations in life, which will have to be resisted.

For women and men (salvation of one's soul and prayer for children)

It is useful to read a prayer for both women and men. Believers, first of all, pray for the salvation of their souls. Moreover, it is absolutely not necessary to pronounce the prayer text. One must accustom oneself to the fact that prayer resounds in the soul every minute and every hour, when an inner need arises.

Prayer will be very effective even if mothers pray for their children. It can be used in combination with special protective prayers. But you just need to remember that this is a secret prayer, no one should be initiated into when you pray.

It is very important to remember that in order to save the soul, prayer must be performed with a repentant feeling. It is necessary to expel envy and anger from the soul. In addition, egoism should not be present in the heart.

Jesus Prayer in Church Slavonic

The Jesus Prayer is a prayer that comes from the depths of the heart: Watch the video prayer "Lord Jesus Christ the Son of God"

Many Orthodox Christians know about the Jesus Prayer. But often it is not given the importance it deserves.

Meanwhile, the Jesus Prayer is the main, key virtue around which everything revolves. If we use the biblical image, then this prayer can be compared with the ocean, which in primitive times, before the flood, washed the whole earth and irrigated it. Without the life-giving action of the Jesus Prayer, this spiritual ocean, nothing can grow in a person, let alone bear fruit.

I remember when I pestered my confessor, Fr. Andrey (Mashkov), with questions about various virtues, which I read about from John of the Ladder or other fathers, he told me: "Pray and that's it." I invented all sorts of means in order to acquire, for example, the memory of death, or the fear of God, or humility, and he always answered me one thing: "Pray and that's it." Then it seemed to me that there was no answer in his words. But after many years, one might say, only now, I began to understand that all the virtues really come to the heart of a person from the Jesus Prayer, of course, if he resists sinful thoughts. From prayer, or rather, from grace, which is mainly acquired by the attentive prayer of Jesus, the fear of God, the memory of death, and humility appear in the soul of a person by themselves. And although I read about this in St. Ignatius, I was surprised at what Father Andrei told me. Until you experience it yourself, you don’t experience something, you don’t agree with it, you don’t believe it for real, with all your heart.

Without prayer, or, one might say, without prayer, virtues cannot be acquired. This does not mean that if we pray, we can afford to do whatever we want, thinking that the virtues will still appear in us by themselves. No, we must force ourselves to keep the commandments. But it must be remembered that the main and even almost the only means for acquiring virtues - so important that all other means are only additional - is the Jesus Prayer.

Without prayer, both the reading of patristic writings, and fasting, and the memory of death will turn out to be something completely dead and empty, like books standing on the shelf of an illiterate person. Anyone who does not pray will not receive any benefit from reading the writings of the Holy Fathers: they will remain for him a “Chinese letter”. He simply will not understand what the holy fathers mean, because he himself does not live a spiritual life, does not face all these problems. Such a person is not only the holy fathers, but also Holy Bible will not be able to understand correctly; what needs to be understood literally, it will seem to him some kind of symbol, allegory.

With the help of the Jesus Prayer, we acquire virtues and with the help of prayer, this spiritual sword, we fight sin. Prayer in this struggle is the main weapon, and all other virtues are auxiliary. Even if a person, for example, fasts extremely strictly, without prayer it means little. There is such an instructive story. Once they found an old man who had labored for many years in the wilderness. He was emaciated, ate only grass and plant roots, and yet he was plagued by impure thoughts. When they began to look for the reason for this, it turned out that the elder was not engaged in mental work, did not fight thoughts with the help of prayer. That is why even such a strict fast and incredible feats could not rid him of passion.

Perhaps someone will object to me that the main weapon in the fight against sin, the main virtue for a Christian, is repentance. Yes, this is fair, but repentance itself comes, first of all, from prayer. The first cannot be without the second, and I even believe that prayer and repentance are one and the same virtue. Prayer is her outer side, and repentance is hers inner side, her spirit. Prayer without repentance is the prayer of the Pharisees, and repentance without prayer is only the appearance of repentance.

Of course, I do not mean that those who do not pray the Jesus Prayer are mistaken. To say so would be a kind of heresy. But why do I talk so much about the meaning of this particular prayer? Because, as St. Ignatius (Brianchaninov) says, it is a school of prayer. Carefully studying it, a person learns to pray attentively, and attention is the soul of prayer. Many people believe that it is enough to pray in the morning and in the evening, to read the prescribed canons before Communion - and with this, the duty of prayer, so to speak, is fulfilled. Not realizing that the whole value of prayer is precisely in attention, they read their little rules very absently, sometimes to such an extent that they themselves do not even hear what is being read. One ascetic said the following words on this subject: “How can God hear your prayer when you yourself do not hear it?” Others, having a greater, but, it seems to me, unreasonable jealousy, take on significant rules in terms of volume. Some additionally read akathists, others add canons, some read one or more, sometimes even many kathismas every day. It seems to them that they are already succeeding from quantity alone, and that such an abundant reading of prayer books benefits them. But if we pray without attention, then it is no longer prayer. God listens to the mind. And if a person does not know how to carefully pronounce the eight words of the Jesus Prayer, then, of course, he is not able to read lengthy prayer books with attention.

If we don't care about attention, we won't learn to pray. This is very important to understand. It is possible, for example, to know the divine services perfectly, and at the same time not be able to pray at all. But if we do not pray, then our participation in the divine service becomes something empty and formal, a kind of game: we pretend to be priests, deacons, praying, we cross ourselves on time, bow, fold our hands at the right moment - and nothing more.

There is an opinion that only monks can engage in the Jesus Prayer, while it is impossible for the laity, who have many worries every day. But let us remember, for example, the holy righteous John of Kronstadt. What was the reason for his extraordinary success? Little is said about this, but he was a worker of unceasing prayer. Since he was a very zealous Christian, he took upon himself the extraordinary feat of serving his neighbors, figuratively speaking, accepted monasticism in the midst of the world, and in order to maintain composure, not to succumb to vain and sinful thoughts, he needed an extraordinary exertion of strength. In addition, the devil raised an extremely strong blasphemous battle against him, about which Father John sometimes speaks in his diaries. Need forced him to turn to the Jesus Prayer. And so he, in addition to reading the prescribed prayers and serving the liturgy every day, incessantly called on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. And although Father John was among people, in vanity, he retained an inner attention that allowed him to soberly look after himself. Moreover, his constant engagement in the Jesus Prayer brought him into a state of such extraordinary moral purity that at times he contemplated in himself the presence of Holy Trinity. Of course, this does not mean that we should expect just such results from prayer. I just want to draw your attention to the fact that if a person is diligent in the Jesus Prayer, whether he is a monk or a layman, then this work will surely bring abundant fruit.

If someone is afraid that he, being excessively zealous for the Jesus Prayer, is thus showing impudence before God and that this may be offensive to God, then let him remember that this prayer itself, in its meaning, is a prayer of repentance. And God, of course, cannot be angry at the boldness of a person in repentance. The Jesus Prayer would teach us humility, even if it did not contain the word “sinner”, which aggravates the repentant mood. The very expression "Lord, have mercy" conveys the main meaning of this prayer. It already says that we consider ourselves deprived of something, unworthy of God's mercy, and therefore we must ask God for this mercy. Without thinking about anything, without thinking about anything, just by praying attentively, we find in this prayer everything necessary to humble ourselves. And the more boldly we force ourselves to pay attention (of course, everything should be reasonable and moderate, everyone should act according to the measure of his progress), the more repentance and humility we acquire.

So, a person who is seeking salvation can be given this short advice: “Pray!” This is the most important thing, and if a person does this, then everything else will gradually come, as the Savior Himself said: “Seek first the Kingdom of Heaven, and the rest will be added to you.” The Jesus Prayer is the very Kingdom of Heaven that we need to seek. The Holy Fathers even call it the only precious bead for which the merchant, that is, every Christian, leaves all his wealth. This pearl, the Jesus Prayer, although small, is equal in value to great wealth. And this comparison is, of course, fair. AT short prayer Jesus, we really acquire the fullness of the action of grace. For better memorization, the following extremely brief instruction can be given: you need to acquire an unceasing, attentive Jesus Prayer. These two properties of prayer - perseverance and mindfulness - we must take care of most of all, and with it everything else will come. If, however, we neglect this and think that we ourselves can, by some kind of cunning, fulfill a separate commandment of the Gospel or the advice of the Holy Fathers, then nothing will come of us. These are just dreams.

Question. Is it possible for a layman who is just beginning to become a church member to pray the Jesus Prayer, and is it necessary to take a blessing for this?

Answer. Of course, it is very desirable to take a blessing, but not formally (for some reason, some believe that only a hieromonk can bless for this doing). It is necessary to consult a person who is experienced in regards to prayer. In addition, it is useful to have a rosary. They are necessary both for counting when we follow the precise rule, and in order not to forget about prayer. fingering the rosary, touching it, we thereby remind ourselves of the need to pray unceasingly.

You also need to take the blessing so that you will be told about the difficulties, temptations and dangers that you may encounter when practicing the Jesus Prayer, and also so that you will be explained how to pray correctly. For example, I always advise a beginner to read several articles about the Jesus Prayer by St. Ignatius (Bryanchaninov), so that a person has some theoretical understanding of prayer before embarking on this path, full of both difficulties and spiritual consolation, so that he knows what delusion is. At the same time, it is important not to receive instruction about prayer once, but, if possible, to constantly seek advice, be nourished by one person who is experienced in this work.

Question . Father, many people believe that it is dangerous to engage in the Jesus Prayer, that you will definitely fall into delusion from it. They say that first you need to acquire repentance and humility, and then dare to say the Jesus Prayer.

Answer . This is the same as saying: first you need to eat, and then cook dinner. Can you eat if your lunch is not ready yet? Maybe there are other ways to achieve repentance and humility, but in any case they are connected with prayer. Suppose I read not the Jesus Prayer, but the Psalms: I will practice attentive, repentant reading of the Psalms. But if it is difficult for us to acquire repentance and humility even with the help of the Jesus Prayer, then it is even more difficult to do so when reading the Psalms. It seems to me that it is almost impossible to achieve these virtues without smart doing, the Jesus Prayer in practice. Theoretically, one can acquire them by practicing a lot in prayers, but in doing so one must watch one's inner life. And when reading long prayers, let's say penitential canons This is much more difficult to do than when doing the Jesus Prayer.

Question . Is it possible in prayer to ask the Lord for grace, spiritual comfort, or will it be too bold?

Answer. You have to be very careful with this, it can be just dangerous. I will tell about myself. Once, in my youth, I first read a discourse by St. Seraphim of Sarov on the purpose of the Christian life, and it shocked me tremendously. At that time, I had not yet prayed the Jesus Prayer and had not communicated with Father Andrei (Mashkov). After reading this work, I realized that the Christian life should be grace-filled, but I understood it primitively. And so I began to pray that grace would come upon me. I didn’t know how to pray correctly, I had never heard of the Jesus Prayer, so I kept repeating “Our Father” and some other prayers endlessly.

Soon strange things began to happen to me. When I went to bed and fell asleep a little, I began to hear some kind of buzzing. I experienced pleasant sensations and saw some waking dreams, as they say, in a thin dream. You know, it happens: it seems that you are already sleeping, but you have not yet lost your self-consciousness. I dreamed of one thing, then another, then it seemed that the icon of the Savior in the corner of the room was sparkling ... And I thought that grace had descended on me. And in the church I cried, just like a girl: tears flowed in a stream. I cry and think: “All my friends look at me and think how pious I am.” But what kind of weeping was that, if I had no idea about the Jesus Prayer? Some moment of the service will strike me, say, the exclamation “Woe, we have hearts,” and I let's cry. I cry, but I don’t hear the service anymore, because I keep in my head a thought that caused tears in me. And my heart is good. Even passions were not particularly tormented. Of course, what kind of passions can there be when a person is satisfied with himself?

I was brought out of this state by the fact that I had at least some sound ideas about Orthodoxy. For example, I knew what canonical icons and iconostases looked like, and that there should not be non-canonical icons in a church. And then one day I had a vision that my mind was at the gates of Paradise. And they are similar to the Royal Doors, but made in the Baroque style: carved, through, gilded. I look at them and think: “But they are not canonical!” As soon as I thought so, how these Heavenly or Royal Doors turned into some kind of long fence. The demon immediately transformed them: if you don't want this, please get another one. But I already understood: something is not right here. However, no one could explain it to me. I turned to one good, zealous priest, but he also had no idea about such things and he himself could not figure out whether this was grace or not grace. As soon as I had these suspicions, all sorts of temptations immediately began.

With my friend (now he is a hieromonk or abbot, I don’t know for sure, we haven’t seen each other for a long time) there was a similar case. We read the same books, and he also read the conversation of St. Seraphim of Sarov with Motovilov. It was already when I came to my senses and realized that I was in delusion. But everyone believes more in himself than in others. My friend also began to pray for grace to come upon him. I do not know what he experienced, but in the end he became so ill that he had to call an ambulance. It's good that there were no serious consequences.

So there is no need to strive for the acquisition of grace, understood primitively: so that the face shines, and there is sweetness in the soul, just like Motovilov. One thing is what Motovilov experienced through the prayers of such a great ascetic as St. Seraphim of Sarov, another thing is what we are capable of. God can only give us what is useful to us, what we can contain. As it is said in the Gospel, no one pours new wine into old wineskins, because the wineskins will break and the wine will spill. As you know, a vessel made of sheep's skin was called furs. If he was old, then the young, still fermenting wine tore him up. Therefore, the Lord does not give us grace, like a new, seething wine: we will lose it and damage our souls. But it seems to us that if there is no grace, such as we imagine it to be, then everything is lost, everything is useless, spiritual life is over, we perish, and so on.

Must always be remembered main criterion: grace for the beginner, if we talk only about subjective sensations, - this attention in prayer. If attention is lost, it means that all your "fertile" sensations are at least suspicious. The action of grace is expressed in the behavior of a person, in his inner state: in humility, humiliation of himself in front of other people, love for his neighbor, and so on. As the apostle Paul says, spiritual fruit is “love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.”

Question. Why does prayer sometimes not help during battle?

Answer . It doesn't help because you don't pray well. Firstly, not diligently enough, without full dedication, without straining all the forces without a trace. For it is said, "Love the Lord thy God with all thy strength." The whole fortress! And we do not pray from the whole fortress, but only, so to speak, by some part, and therefore the result is corresponding. When you endure scolding, then you need to pray as if either you will be killed or you will be killed. Imagine that someone attacked you and wants to kill you. Of course, you will mobilize all your forces, otherwise, if you make even the slightest mistake, you will be stabbed or strangled. During the fight, there should be extreme tension.

Secondly, it happens that we pray, but at the same time we accept thoughts, we do not reject them. Then it is as if there is an effort in prayer, even, perhaps, a special, extraordinary one, but at the same time we accepted the sinful thoughts that we struggle with, enjoy them, gave them freedom to act in us, and they took root. Passion has taken possession of our soul, and we do not try to move away from these thoughts, we do not try to resist them, but we say a prayer. Such a way of waging warfare, in which a sinful thought is in the soul of a person and prayer is simultaneously active, is appropriate for a person who has been very successful, in whom grace and the power of prayer are so powerful that gradually and even, perhaps very quickly, the fire of grace destroys the sinful thought. With us, the opposite happens: our mind gradually, gradually clings to a sinful thought, since our prayer is weak, there is little grace in us, there is little jealousy, zeal, compelling ourselves to pray. Prayer becomes formal, and the thought intensifies and intensifies, and completely defeats the prayer so that we either pronounce it dryly, or completely forget about it and completely, so to speak, burn with passion.

The third mistake, which, however, not everyone can correct (it depends on the degree of success), is that we do not have contrition of the heart. Extremely straining our strength during prayer and trying to resist the thought, we rely too much on ourselves, thinking that since we are doing everything right, there should be a result. We forget that if God does not help us, then no one will ever be able to help us - neither prayer, nor any virtue, nor man.

Question. Prayer in the mind is always pronounced very dryly, as if insensibly and with difficulty, I often get distracted. I do not see that something is changing in me, I do not feel that I am praying. It seems that this is not a prayer, but just a mechanical pronunciation without the end of her words.

Answer. I think that this is not bad either, and such dryness happens either from neglect of attention when we say a prayer out of habit, or from the fact that we do not have the memory of death, respectively, there is no emotion, so the prayer is pronounced dryly and “tasteless”. Judging by the sign: “prayer is pronounced insensitively and with difficulty, I am often distracted,” then we can conclude that the person who wrote the note does not have sufficient zeal for attention, you need to try to pray simply, with faith, and the Lord will give help.

Question. My relative, a layman, wants to leave the Jesus Prayer because of insurances. What to advise him?

Answer. I had a familiar grandmother, a gardener, I don’t know if she is alive or not. On my advice, this old woman began to pray the Jesus Prayer - at first a little, and then she got used to it. She could not work for a long time without a break, she got tired: she would work for an hour, lie down on the bed and pray the Jesus Prayer, then go back to work for one and a half to two hours. She spent the whole day like this, barely walking, holding on to a hoe, as if working on three legs. When she lived alone, she also had all sorts of fears: either as if someone would run across the room, then something cold was lying next to her, then as if someone would splash under the window with flippers. There is nothing surprising here: the demon does not look at whether you are a layman or a monk, but at how you pray. If a monk prays badly, then no demon will tempt him, and if a layman prays fervently, then the demon will begin to attack him. Let your relative cross himself and pay no attention to such phenomena. If he is too attentive to them, they will intensify. If you neglect them and behave courageously, then everything will pass. Prayer is not required.

Perhaps, every person is familiar with such a state when the soul is disturbed by something vague and vague concern for the fate of loved ones, everyday problems and hardships lie like a stone on the heart.

How to get rid of this heaviness, find ground under your feet?

Prayers are important and beautiful all without exception. After all, each of them was born in the depths of the souls of those who turned to the Lord, the best human feelings are invested in each - love, faith, patience, hope ... And each of us probably has (or will) his favorite prayers, those which are somehow especially consonant with our soul, our faith.

But there are three main prayers, which every Christian is obliged to know by heart and understand the meaning of. They are the basis of the foundations, a kind of ABC of Christianity.

The first of them -

Symbol of faith

“I believe in one God the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only Begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages.
Light from light, true God, true from God, begotten, not created, Consubstantial with the Father, He is the whole being.
For us, man, and for our salvation, who descended from heaven, and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin, and became human.
Crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried.
And he rose again on the third day, according to the scripture. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And the packs of the future with glory to be judged by the living and the dead, His kingdom will have no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets.
Into one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.
I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. tea resurrection of the dead. And the life of the next century. Amen".

The second main prayer with which we walk along the road of Christianity is

Lord's Prayer

“Our Father, Who art in heaven!

Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth.

Give us our daily bread today, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen"

No matter how serious our care is, no matter how heavy our grief, in despondency and sadness, in anguish and sorrow, in mental illness and bodily illness, we can always regain peace, health and joy. To do this, it is enough to know a seemingly short eight-word prayer.

Jesus Prayer

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner"

And, of course, in addition to the three main prayers, there are main prayers that every believer should read at least once a week.

Rising from sleep, before any other work, stand reverently, presenting yourself before the All-Seeing God, and, making the sign of the cross, say:

“In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen."

Then wait a little until all your feelings come to silence and your thoughts leave everything earthly, and then say the following prayers, without haste and with attention of the heart:

Publican's Prayer

"God, be merciful to me a sinner (Bow)."

Predestinatory prayer

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee » .

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

« Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of Truth, Who is everywhere and fills everything, Treasury of the good and Giver of life, come and dwell in us and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Blessed, our souls.

THREE-HOLY

« Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us » .
(It is read three times, with the sign of the cross and a bow from the waist).

Prayer to the Holy Trinity

« Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Lord, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your name's sake.

Lord have mercy (thrice) . Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever, amen » .

Song of the Mother of God

“Virgin Mother of God, Virgin, rejoice! Blessed Mary, the Lord is with you!
Blessed are You in women and blessed is the fruit of Your womb, as if the Savior gave birth to our souls. Amen » .

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos

« Oh, Blessed Virgin, Mother of the Lord, Queen of heaven and earth!

Listen to my many-painful sighing of our soul, look from the height of Thy saint on us, with faith and love worshiping Thy Most Pure Image!

Behold, immersed in sin and overwhelmed with sorrow, looking at Your image, as if you live with us, we offer our humble prayers.

No other help, no other intercession, no consolation, only to You, O Mother of all those who grieve and burdened!

Help us weak, quench our sorrow, guide us, the deluded, on the right path, heal and save the hopeless, grant us the rest of our life in peace and silence.

Grant a Christian death, and at the terrible judgment of Your Son, the merciful Intercessor will appear to us, let us always sing, magnify and glorify Thee, as the good Intercessor of the Christian race, with all those who pleased God.
Amen! »

Alive in help

“Alive in the help of the Most High, in the blood of the Heavenly God he will be settled. The Lord says: Thou art my intercessor and my refuge, my God, and I trust in Him.
As if He will deliver you from the net of the hunter, and from the rebellious word, His splash will overshadow you, and under His wings you hope: His truth will be your weapon.
Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, from the arrow flying in the days, from the transitory things in the darkness, from the scum, and the noonday demon.
A thousand will fall from your country, and darkness at your right hand, but it will not come close to you, but look at your eyes, and see the reward of sinners.
As you, O Lord, are my hope, the Most High have laid down your refuge.
Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not approach your body, as if by His Angel a commandment about you, save you in all your ways.
They will take you in their hands, but not when you stumble your foot on a stone, step on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent.
For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver, and I will cover, and, as I know My name.
He will call to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in sorrow, I will crush him, and I will glorify him, I will fulfill him with long life, and I will show him My salvation.

Prayer to the Guardian Angel

“Holy angel of Christ, I pray to you, my holy guardian, devoted to me to keep my soul to my sinful body from holy baptism,
but with my laziness and my evil habit, I angered your most pure lordship and drove you away from me with all the student’s deeds,
slander, envy, condemnation, contempt, disobedience, fraternal hatred and rancor,
love of money, adultery, rage, avarice, gluttony without satiety and drunkenness, verbosity,
evil thoughts and crafty, proud custom and prodigal rage, having self-will for every carnal desire.

Oh, my evil will, even the dumb beasts do not create it!
But how can you look at me, or come to me, like a stinking dog?
Whose eyes, Angel of Christ, look at me, entangled in evil in vile deeds?
Yes, how can I ask forgiveness for my bitter and evil and crafty deed, I fall into it all day and night and at every hour?
But I pray you, falling down to my guardian saint, have mercy on me, a sinful and unworthy servant of yours
(name) ,
Be my helper and intercessor against my evil opponent, with your holy prayers, and make the Kingdom of God a partaker of me with all the saints,
always, and now, and forever, and forever and ever. Amen".

Prayer to the Archangel of God Michael

“Lord, Great God, King without beginning, send Your Archangel Michael to help Your servants (name) .
Protect us, Archangel, from all enemies visible and invisible.

Oh Lord Great Archangel Michael! Demon crusher, forbid all enemies fighting me, and make them like sheep.
And humble their evil hearts and crush them like dust in the face of the wind. Oh Lord Great Archangel Michael! Six-winged first prince and governor of the heavenly forces, Cherubim and Seraphim, be our helper in all troubles, sorrows and sorrows, in the desert and on the seas a quiet haven.
Oh Lord Great Archangel Michael! Deliver us from all the charms of the devil, whenever you hear us, sinners, praying to You and calling on Your Holy Name.
Hasten help to us and overcome all those who oppose us with the power of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, the prayers of the holy Apostles, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Andrew Christ for the sake of the Holy Fool, the holy prophet Elijah and all the holy great martyrs, the holy martyrs Nikita and Eustathius and all our reverend fathers who from the ages have pleased God and all the holy heavenly powers.

Oh Lord Great Archangel Michael! Help us sinners (name) and deliver us from the coward, the flood, the fire, the sword, and from vain death, from great evil, from the flattering enemy, from the storm that is tormented, from the evil one, deliver us always, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen".

“Holy Archangel Michael of God, with Your lightning sword, banish from me the evil spirit that tempts and torments me. Amen"

Psalm 50

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity.
Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and my sin before me is taken out.
I have sinned against you alone and done evil before you, as if you were justified in your words, and conquered when you judge Thee.
Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins give birth to me, my mother.
Behold, thou hast loved the truth; the unknown and secret wisdom of yours revealed to me.
Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Give joy and joy to my hearing; the bones of the humble will rejoice.
Turn Your face away from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities.
Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.
Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Reward me the joy of Your salvation and confirm me with the dominating Spirit.
I will teach the wicked in Your way, and the unclean will turn to You.
Deliver me from the blood, O God, God, of my salvation; my tongue rejoices in thy righteousness.
Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise.
As if you would have desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings.
Sacrifice to God the spirit is contrite: the heart is contrite and humble, God will not despise.
Please, O Lord, with Thy favor Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.
Then be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, an offering and a burnt offering; then they will offer bullocks on your altar.”

Prayer for the Fatherland

“Save, O Lord, Thy people, and bless Thy inheritance, granting victory to the opposition, and Thy keeping Thy Cross living.”

We have lost contact with the Divine - and that is the reason for all our troubles and misfortunes. We forgot about the spark of God that is in each of us.
We forgot that a person is meant to protect and strengthen the connection between his own divine spark and the Divine fire, which seems to connect us to the "accumulator of the Universe."
And we are given as much strength as we need, without any restrictions. Orthodox prayers restore this connection.
