Slavic amulets talismans symbols of their meaning. Slavic amulets: the meaning of the symbols of ancestors

  • 16.10.2019

It so happened that, studying the culture Ancient Russia and the ancient Slavs, thoroughly study Orthodoxy, examples of the first centuries of Christian Russia, however, it is customary to talk about paganism in books in one line: “before the baptism of Russia, the Slavs were idolaters”, but this formulation is not only not accurate, but also not true - it’s all the same what to speak of Christians as "icon-worshippers". In fact, the paganism of the Slavs is a subject for study that is much deeper, more interesting and mysterious than Christianity.

This has already been proved by many authors, for example, Boris Alekseevich Rybakov in his epochal books, which opened the eyes of many people who are now engaged in paganism (“The paganism of the Ancient Slavs”, “The paganism of Ancient Russia” and many others), many less well-known later authors: Anton Platov, Alexander Asov, Valery Demin, Sergey Paramonov (Forest). From a scientific point of view, the first to study the ancient faith was none other than the Russian genius Mikhail Lomonosov. Members of Rodnoverie (pagan) communities, which are rapidly gaining strength in our country, are also engaged in research, the most famous of them are the Magi Veleslav (community "Rodolyubie"), Dmitry Gavrilov (Iggeld), Velimir ("Kolyada Vyatichi"). All these authors speak of paganism as a multifaceted, deep and ancient faith our glorious ancestors - and no one accuses the ancient Slavs of "dark idolatry."

In the same work, we will talk about a pagan symbol, an integral part of traditional (pagan) culture. The main groups of symbols, their religious and magical interpretation and the history of their origin, and other facts of interest to the reader will be considered.

The role of the symbol in paganism

Of great importance in the Primordial Faith, as the modern followers of the ancient Magi like to call paganism, is the symbol, it is he who often carries the main semantic load in magical and priestly art. After all, a symbol is not just an icon or decoration on the staff of a sorcerer, ritual dishes, an idol or other thing, but a combination of sacred meanings, magical effects, thousands of years of work of ancient geniuses who formed this sign. Simply put, the symbol in the paganism of the Slavs carries, first of all, a magical load, and only in the very last place - an aesthetic one.

The symbol is used to influence the world, transform it. Many symbols are amulets that “turn away” the dark forces of chaos that can cause harm from the bearer of this amulet, many are able to erase the line between worlds, allowing, for example, a shaman to travel to the dark world (Nav) or light (Right), some are direct appeal to the gods, one or another force of nature ...

Solar symbolism

Solar symbolism - the symbolism of the solar element, the Sun, solar light gods.

The Gods of the Sun in Slavic Paganism - Dazhdbog, Svarog, Khors. They are one of the light, that is, representing the forces of the Rule of the gods. Rule - the upper, heavenly world in Slavic mythology. The Slavs represented the Rule as an ideal world, where the laws of justice and honor prevail. Many Russian words tell us about this: correct (as in Prav), spravny (with Prav), rule (in justice), right (in both meanings). Solar symbolism is one of the brightest in the Slavic tradition. Among the solar signs, perhaps, there is not a single one that is harmful. On the contrary, all signs are associated with the acquisition of both material and spiritual goods, their multiplication. The sun in Paganism is also an all-seeing eye, which is why, if there was a need, they committed a crime at night - maybe the gods of the Rule will not notice; on the same night, evil spirits and dark wizards are activated. In the sunny time of the day, on the contrary, the light forces that help man and nature also predominate. However, this is only one side of the coin.

About the swastika

Perhaps the fundamental sign for solar symbolism. The most short-sighted and uneducated, whose mind is weighed down by stupid propaganda cries of the media, consider this sign an invariable attribute of fascism, skinheads that are so fashionable today. This is not true. Any historian or philosopher, and even more so, a pagan, will trace the history of this sign from the depths of many millennia. For the first time, this symbol, along with some other symbols of German paganism, was appropriated for his fascist power by Adolf Hitler. Since then, it has become customary, like fascism - so the swastika, in honor of the great (and terrible) Hitler. In fact, this sign has nothing to do with the outrage called fascism. This sign is an image of the Sun, an appeal to the bright gods. This sign brings good and justice to the world of Reveal, carries a huge charge of light magical energy.

The classical Sanskrit name for this symbol comes from the Indo-European root "su/swa", which means "associated with good". Let us recall the bird Mother Sva (the patroness of Russia), the god Svarog, Svarga - the habitat of the bright gods of Slavic myths. The word "light" belongs to the same root. However, among the Slavs, the swastika was called Kolovrat or Solstice. However, Kolovrat still starts with 6 rays. Since Kolo is a circle, a RING, a WHEEL, a WELL, a KOLOBOK. Kolovrat in all ages and among all peoples was a symbol of the Sun, there is even reason to believe that the Sun in ancient times was called exactly “Kolo”.

Also, some authors associate it with the unity of statics and dynamics. Moreover, only a rotating swastika has a dynamic meaning. If it rotates clockwise (to the right), then it symbolizes the desire for everything related to life, with positive qualities and an active masculine principle; rotation counterclockwise, on the contrary, indicates dying, the denial of all positive and passivity of behavior. Absolutely opposite, the Greeks interpret the direction of rotation of their swastika (who called it “tetraxele” - “four-legged”, “four-pointed”), since they learned about the swastika from the Slavic peoples who were not friendly to them and decided that what the Slavs - Rule, they - Hades. Hence there is a lot of confusion with the direction of rotation and the direction of the rays of the swastikas. The swastika is not only a four-beam sign, which was described above. There are also swastikas with 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 or more rays. Each type of swastika has its own specific magical meaning. Let's look at some other types of swastikas.

thunder sign- the sign of Perun, a six-pointed cross enclosed in a circle. This sign was very widely known, and Scandinavians and Celts and Slavs knew it. We can see the thunder sign in the ornament of Russian spinning wheels and on huts right up to our time. They cut it to the bottom for a reason. In huts, it was carved on a kokoshnik (a board hanging from the end of a ridge) as a magical lightning rod. Also, a thunder sign is a sign of courage, military prowess. It was a magical sign of the Russian squad. This sign can be found on helmets, armor plates. This sign is also embroidered on a men's shirt.

Eight-beam Kolovrat- a sign under which the revival of Slavic paganism is now taking place. You can see it on the banners of modern pagan communities. Such an honor was given to this sign not by chance. This is a sign of Svarog, the creator god, the god of wisdom. It was Svarog who created the Earth, people (through Dazhdbog), gave people many knowledge, including metal and a plow. The sign of Svarog is a sign of wisdom and higher justice, a sign of Rule. Also, the stake of Svarog is a symbol of the universe. The device of the universal wheel of Svarog is very difficult. Its center is located on Stozhar-Stlyazi - the celestial axis. It rotates around Stozhar in one day and makes a revolution in a year. The very slow rotation of the Wheel leads to the change of zodiacal epochs. Such revolution of the Wheel lasts 27 thousand years. This time is called the day of Svarog.

Trixel- Three-branched swastika. In the north, a “broken” one is used, that is, a trixel that does not have connections between the rays. Its magical meaning is not known very accurately. But if we proceed from the fact that it consists of three runes of the Elder Futhark "Laguz" ("Laguz"), then it turns out that this is a sign of "what leads", a sign that directs the development of events in the right direction. It can also be compared with the three runes "Kano" ("Kano"), a very complex rune associated with the direction and orientation of human activity. Simply put, this sign orients a person in life, serves as a kind of "guiding star" for him. Also, some scholars associate this sign with time and the god of time, among the Slavs - with Number God, and the three rays of the trixel - with three legs bent at the knees (running), but this definition is very superficial: it is based only on the Greek interpretation of the name of the sign: tri - three, kselos - bone, limb. Following the Greek terminology, the four-beam swastika is called "tetraxel".

So, the main forms of solar symbolism, the swastika, are considered. However, there are also many other solar symbols that are less common Slavic peoples, for example, the "Dragon's Eye" - a three-beam swastika with connected rays, used in Wales (Great Britain) in earth magic, the so-called "Celtic version" - a swastika with wavy curved rays inscribed in a circle, Sonnenrad (by the way, it was the emblem of some divisions SS), "cross of initiation" and many others...

Cross

Also a solar symbol. We do not attribute it to the swastika very conditionally - the cross is also a swastika, only without rays receding to the side. Many not very distant people consider it a “purely Christian” sign, but this is far from being the case. For example, Catholic missionaries preaching in China saw crosses depicted on the statues of Buddha, whose teaching arose about six centuries earlier than Christianity, and Spanish canquistodors witnessed the veneration of the cross by North American pagan Indians as a fusion of Heavenly fire and Earthly fire.

The word "cross" comes from the common European root "cru", which means "curved". We can observe this root in the words "circle", "curve", "steep". In Latin, "crux" means cross. There is another version that the word "cross" comes from the Slavic root "kres" - fire (compare: "kresalo" - a tool for kindling a fire).

Archaeological evidence suggests that the cross was revered as a symbol as far back as the Upper Paleolithic. The cross is a symbol of life, heaven and eternity. Also, the correct (equal-ended) cross symbolizes the principle of connection and

interaction of two principles: female (horizontal line) and male (vertical). Crosses are also divided into a straight line, that is, having a horizontal and vertical line, and an oblique one, having two diagonal lines, with a straight cross personifying a male aggressive creative principle, an oblique one representing a softer creative principle.

A straight cross can also serve as a primitive model of the World Tree, where the vertical line is the World Tree, and the horizontal line is the world of Reveal. Accordingly, a cross with a horizontal line shifted up will indicate the location of the world of Rule on the Tree, down - the world of Navi. Naturally, these crosses will have a corresponding magical meaning.

Consider the main types of crosses characteristic of the Nordic tradition.

Celtic cross or Kolokryzh most accurately demonstrates the similarity of the cross with the swastika and all the conventionality of their separation. Look at the six- and eight-beam kolovrats presented in this work. In addition to the number of rays, these signs do not change anything. Despite the fact that this cross is called Celtic, it is known to almost all Indo-Europeans, including the Slavs. The history of the Celtic cross has at least 8-9 millennia. The Celts especially revered this cross. The Celtic cross was also called the "cross of the warrior", "the cross of Wotan" (Odin).
twelve-pointed cross represents a cross with a crossbar on each beam, or a swastika with rays extended to the left (in the dark one to the right) rays. The purpose of this cross is protection from external influences. Also, many researchers talk about this sign as a magical sign of the Family. It is also called the Helm of Dread, representing it as a set of four runes Algiz of the Elder Futhark. Rune Algiz is a rune of passive protection, that is, the meaning of this symbol is unchanged. This symbol was widespread both in ancient times, there is archaeological evidence for this - many amulets with a helmet of horror were found in the territories of the Scythians, Mordovians, Indo-European peoples, and in the Middle Ages they decorated the walls of houses and wooden products and were also often used in church utensils. The most powerful symbol among the helmets of horror is the so-called Aegishjalm (Scandinavian name) or the Cross of Invincibility - this symbol surpasses all others in its effectiveness.

12-beam cross

Symbolism of Nature, Earth and fertility.

Makosh. Hood. Nadezhda Antipova

Mother Earth, Mother Nature... Everyone knows such phrases, but few people thought about why they say so. But this expression came to us from Paganism. There is nothing surprising in the fact that our ancestor, a pagan, could call the earth a mother - she, the giver of all blessings. She feeds and waters, and clothes and warms. The earth is in union with the sky (in folk mythology, they are spouses). Gives us the world in which we live... Naturally, the Earth could not but be reflected in mythology and folk legends. Goddess of the Earth, fertility and fate - Makosh. Her name is formed from two roots

Signs of a sown and unsown field

- "Ma", Mother and "Kosh" - a wallet, a storehouse of wealth. This decoding gives clear view about how our ancestors treated Mokosh and the Earth itself. The Earth is associated with the feminine - firstly, the Earth is capable of giving birth to life, and secondly, its sisters, Share and Nedolya spin the threads of fate (Share spins a happy fate, Nedolya - unhappy), because the thread is a symbol of life. Doli's thread is soft, smooth, Nedolya's thread is flimsy, thin, like the fate of a person. When the thread breaks, the person dies. An inapplicable attribute of Mokosh is a cornucopia, which once again speaks of its significance for people and its relationship to the earth.

Let's talk first about the symbolism of fertility. It is represented by a very characteristic pattern - a rhombus (or square), divided inside into four more rhombuses. This field. Small diamonds - if you like, holes for seeds. If dots are depicted in small rhombuses, this means that the field is sown - this is a symbol of fertility. If the small diamonds are empty, then the field is not sown. These symbols have a corresponding magical meaning. Countless variations are possible with diamonds, squares and dots. In general, a rhombus (square) with a dot in the middle is something that can give birth, something that is a source of well-being and abundance.

An empty rhombus is the same, but not able (not fertilized) to give birth.

Symbols of nature very numerous and varied. There is no such symbol that would mean nature itself. But quite a lot of magical signs are dedicated to her. First of all, nature is magical. Therefore, let's start with the symbols of the World Tree. The World Tree (the Scandinavians have Yggdasil ash) is the “Axis of the World”, it holds all the worlds on itself. The world of Rule is located in the crown. At the trunk - Yav, in the roots, where the World Serpent Yusha - Nav huddles. The shaman, being in a trance, can travel through these worlds. We see an echo of the ancient myth about the World Tree in a fairy tale about a magic bean, where an old man grows a magic bean vine to the very sky and climbs up to the clouds along it.

Such a symbol as a fern flower is especially famous, with which a legend is associated - a fern on the night of Kupala produces a beautiful fire flower. And it blooms only one night, and then disappears without a trace. Whoever finds this flower will become wise and strong.

Non-magical nature is also reflected in the symbols. For example, the forest was depicted as several schematically drawn trees. Moreover, we note that when decomposing such a tree, we will get several Futhark runes Teiwaz (Teiwaz), the rune of warriors, attacking forces or the runes Ansuz (Ansuz), which means “God” from the “Christmas tree”, this rune is associated with the Gods, and also with a journey through the World Tree. Using the Vendian runes, the tree will appear before us as a combination of the runes "Alatyr", "Need", "Lelya", "Treba". It is clear that the “Christmas Tree”, but rather the Pine, is a tree of faith and magic. Not a Christmas tree, but a pine, because it is a spruce, a dark tree. As proof, there is a Russian proverb: "to have fun in a birch forest, to pray in a pine forest, and to hang yourself in a spruce forest." However, spruce is possible here as the dark, Nava side of the faith. Now let's look at the "reverse tree", whose branches are directed upwards. Let's divide it into runes too. Before us are Futhark - Fehu (Fehu) - possession (often spiritual) and Algiz (Algiz) - passive protection. In Vendian - "Peace", "Krada" (sacrificial fire), Bereginya (female rune, Makosh rune) and "Is" (nature, life, movement). Now the sacred meaning of seemingly primitive "Christmas trees" is clear. While the "Pine" is directed to the divine aspect of faith, the "inverted pine" is a more human, worldly aspect - worship, traditions, sacrifice, procreation.

Also, the animal world was reflected in symbols. Signs inherited the properties of animals. Naks denoting birds have a special meaning, for a bird is a mysterious, magical creature for the ancients. Many light gods can turn into a bird. Perun - into an eagle or a raven, Volkh - into Finist-Falcon. An interesting sign common to all birds is “pecking bird”. It symbolizes the sky, the legacy of the bright gods, to some extent the gods themselves.

There are also swastika-like "bird" symbols, such as the sign of the raven. Take a closer look, at least to the Russian coat of arms, to the eagle spreading its wings - on it you can see the outlines of the swastika.

You can also look at Russian embroideries - they also often feature birds. But these birds are no longer Javanese, but magical - known to everyone from fairy tales and songs Sirin, Alkonost, Gamayun. These birds sit on the branches of the World Tree and sing their songs. They are depicted not as schematically as others, but their images are mainly of an aesthetic nature - they are not used for magic and worship. Perhaps this detachment from magic allowed these symbols to survive to our times in the form of embroideries, carvings and clay products.

Symbolism of Water

Water, one of the creative elements, is very interesting from a pagan point of view, it has a lot of sacred aspects, which cannot but be reflected in its symbolism. Firstly, water for a pagan, this is what gives life to all living things - you must admit, this thought is daring, apostate for Christianity - how can anyone give life except for the "only" "Lord-God"? But it is with the help of life-giving heavenly water that grasses and forests turn green in spring, it is thanks to it that the crop does not dry out in the field, but blooms, bears fruit and ears. Our ancient ancestors were fully aware of this. By the way, it was from the water that the earth was born, brought in the beak of the World Duck according to one of the ancient Russian myths. Water also carries the sacred meaning of purification. A pagan washing himself in a bath washes away not only physical dirt, but also spiritual dirt - a shell of vice, darkness, hatred. It turns out a ritual, because the sacred action of rebirth, the renewal of a person is performed - like the renewal of the skin and body of a person in a bath, the soul, his aura is renewed. Ablution was performed before important matters - the priest must necessarily wash in the bath to perform the ceremony, a person must wash, for example, before the wedding - first of all, not for beauty, but so that dark forces do not interfere with the ritual. The warrior always washed before the battle, and after the battle, so that the battle would not be affected by all the same forces. And the third, but by no means the last, aspect of the meaning of water for a pagan is its flow. Everyone knows the proverb that you cannot enter the same river twice. Many do not understand it - for them, the river is this blue line on the map. For a pagan, the river is a stream of water - the water has flowed away and the river is different. That is, the flow of water is a kind of indicator of time. No wonder they say - "how much water has flowed under the bridge since then", meaning that a lot of time has passed. So flowing river water is also a sacred comparison with time - water inevitably flows away, just as days, years, centuries flow away.

Accordingly, the symbols of water have various meanings.

Life-giving water is heavenly water, or as they like to call it, "heavenly waters". It is thanks to her that our ancestors, yes, we see on our own dining table an abundance of breads, vegetables, fruits, meat and dairy products. It is thanks to this water that plants feed, gain strength - the grass becomes green and juicy, rye is eared, turnips grow like in a well-known fairy tale. Rain, watering the field, gives vitality to plants, fills them with juices. Also associated with heavenly water is the idea of a cornucopia. The fact is that juicy grasses played a strategic role in antiquity - cattle had to graze somewhere, and if there is a place to graze, then there is plenty of milk and meat. If there is rain, then bread will be eared in the field and vegetables in the beds will produce large crops, which means that our ancestor will have an abundance of bakery products and large stocks of vegetables for the winter. Sometimes, therefore, the cornucopia is even depicted as if pouring water. It is also worth looking at the very word "rain" - does it not seem to you akin to the word "Dazhd", one of the names of the great God, the giver of blessings and the progenitor of people Dazhdbog. By the way, the name "Dazhdbog" came from two roots - "sales" - that is, to give, do good, help and, in fact, "god". And in general, rainwater, unlike river water, has a male fertilizing principle.

A completely different water - river, unlike rain, it basically came just from under the ground - from springs, springs. By the way, the spring was considered a sacred place - to defile it was the same as to desecrate the temple. Indeed, water is “born” in the spring - coming from the bowels of the earth, it flows from the spring in a thin stream, the stream connects with another, these are connected with the third - this is how a mighty river turns out. Some springs had miraculous healing properties. Again, this is not an invention of "vile pagans" - it has been scientifically proven that water flows from some sources, enriched with salts and minerals that are very beneficial to health. Today, some representatives of the ROC are even trying to make money on the heritage of the ancient pagans - they "bless for the production" of certain waters (for example, the water "Holy Spring" extracted from a purely pagan source), but in general this is in the style of the ROC - they are ready to row money from any little thing, and fools, still living under ideological serfdom, like sheep go in droves and buy everything that the divine right hand of the great has touched and “ holy patriarch Moscow and All Russia”, be it even water, even condoms. However, let's not digress. Since spring and river water flows, it is depicted as wavy horizontal stripes. River water, unlike rainwater, and along with a thread, can act as a symbol of the flow of time, life. The water flows away along with the past moments gone forever. This is the truth of life… Water is not just destiny, this is the power of what leads, that is, in water there is a sacred symbolism of fate, something that cannot be avoided, however, as a rule, in a positive sense. In the elder Futhark there is a rune "Laguz" (Laguz), "Water". Its value just reflects the essence of flowing water. Here is what the well-known researcher A. Platov writes about this rune in his book “Practical course of runic art” (co-authored with A. Van Dart): “The name of this rune means not just water, but - flowing, moving - one that forms a stream and draws you in."

In the Tradition, there are also amazing legends about magical rivers, they will seem familiar to you from fairy tales - this is the Iriy milk river flowing from under the stone of Alatyr (which is on Buyan Island) - it symbolizes not anything, but the Milky Way. The Milk River is a poetic representation of the outskirts of our galaxy. Many legends are connected with the Milky Way and the Milky (White) River, most of them with stories about life after death. However, in these stories, another river appears, Smorodina, a fiery river. It separates the Java world and the "great expanses of Navi" (the saying is "Naviy Shlyakh", the community "Bor"). Guarding the borders of Navi, familiar to many, if not all, Baba Yaga (Storm Yaga).

With this knowledge, many plots of fairy tales become clear - the hero crosses the fiery river and ends up with Baba Yaga - this is a plot that is somewhat similar to the ancient Greek story about Orpheus and Eurydice. And where did the swan geese take brother Ivanushka from sister Alyonushka? - Vanya died, and his sister rescued him from the clutches of death (remember here the concept of "clinical death").

The idea of Kalinov Bridge is also connected with mythical rivers. Kalinov Bridge is a multifaceted and very complex concept. It is associated with the subtle states of the human soul - love, high feelings. In later times, “To meet someone on the Kalinov Bridge” means to love (see the article by V. N. Vakurov, “Kalina is Hot”, Russian Language Abroad magazine, 1990 No. 4). However, not everything is so rosy. In fact, on the Kalinov Bridge the main battle of the human soul between the beginning of Prav and Navi is taking place - a battle with oneself (our life is an eternal struggle). Look to the right - in the author's humble opinion, the brilliant Russian artist Konstantin Vasiliev very accurately depicted this duel. A real person (man) is always a warrior in his soul, a warrior of the spirit, if he is not a warrior, then he is a reptile both figuratively and literally, that is, a snake, a worm. In the battle on the viburnum bridge, it is very difficult to win a complete victory, to destroy one side or another in oneself, just as one cannot be absolutely kind, absolutely wise - therefore, the heavenly chamber of Rule cannot defeat the forces of Navi in any way.

Symbolism of Fire

Fire ... Probably, even the most urban person at least once in his life looked at a live fire, not from gas stove or lighters, but the real one, which is in the oven or fire. A spectacle that captivates the eye and mind. Naturally, fire evokes the same feelings in a Pagan. Fire for the Pagan is not just a chemical process, it is a sacred phenomenon. The concepts of sacrificial fire (earthly fire) are directly related to this phenomenon - the smoke from the sacrificial fire carries the essences of the victims to Iriy (essences because it is difficult to say that, for example, a pancake has a soul or not, but any object has an essence) . There is also heavenly fire - the fire of the heavenly forge, the forge of Svarog, Torah - one of the main creative forces. Let's draw some analogies with the Sun and plasma and the Big Bang theory and the period of the formation of the Earth, when active tectonic processes and volcanic eruptions took place on it. It would also be appropriate to recall the fiery sword - a symbol of justice and Rule, which is armed with many fantasy and historical characters in modern works. Even the Jedi Knights from the George Lucas films, who are essentially pagan, are armed with lightsabers.

There is also the Navi fire, here we will draw analogies with the Christian cult, in which sinners who are in hell are fried by devils on fires, which (bonfires) have seven cooking modes for these same sinners (see "Dante's Divine Comedy") - what kind of microwave -then. This primitive belief about the unfortunate fate of sinners (where is mercy and forgiveness?!) naturally takes its roots from a broader and more justified pagan idea of Nava fire. So, a pagan associates Nav with an underground fiery kingdom (remember the Greek Hades) - and by the way, no one is fried there, just an underground fire is understood as an element. Here it would be appropriate to recall fire-breathing dragons and snakes - they are also children of Navi. The fire of Navi can be interpreted as a regressive, destructive force that burns goodness and light. After all, you can burn your heart with love (heavenly fire), or you can burn your soul with drunkenness and deceit.

These are the pies. Now let's look at the graphic images of these signs. The signs of fire, especially the Heavenly Forge, are rather difficult signs to perform and understand. They represent, as a rule, four-part swastika-shaped signs, but this is not quite a swastika, because the fire does not spin anywhere, the rays, but rather even the flames are located differently than the swastikas. Let's look at the runic foundation of these signs. When decomposing these signs, both heavenly and earthly fire, we get at least four Futhark runes Kano (Kano), “Torch” is how A. Platov characterizes the rune: “... A very powerful rune; is connected not only with the formation and orientation of human activity (at any level) in the right direction, but also with giving it the necessary strength. The second aspect of the rune is disclosure. Obviously, both aspects of the rune are interconnected - it is impossible to realize the plan without revealing yourself to the world. Here is one aspect of fiery power. Also, we can get the rune Gebo (Gebo), Dar - the rune of the divine gift. We also see in them the rune Inguz, the rune norse god Inga (Freyra), this is one of the most interesting Futhark runes, the rune of fertility in the reproductive aspect. The same rune y in the Slavic system is similar in meaning to the rune of Dazhdbog, the giver of blessings - note that this rune is already found only in the signs of heavenly fire. And finally, the rune Othal (Othal), a legacy whose name speaks for itself, may stop before us. So - the symbolism of fire is very complex.

Symbolism of air and space

Great are the expanses of bright Russia ... Go out into the field, look at what beautiful lands stretch out here right up to the very horizon! Have you felt how the wind plays in your hair and how the waves go in the grain field, and how the trees rustle in the forest, and how the leaves play on the aspen? For sure. So, before us is the symbolism of space and air. Let's define what we will understand further by these concepts. So, space is what in mathematics denotes three axes - X, Y, Z, going to infinity. They represent the width, length and height. Simply put, space is a certain section of the physical world, defined by some boundaries - explicit or implicit. Air, on the other hand, is air - our habitat, a set of gases that determines, among other things, the laws of aerodynamics - this addition is very important, because our ancestors could judge the nature of air from them.

Have you ever shot with a bow? Not in a shooting range or a sports field, but in a field? If yes, then you must be familiar with the indescribable feeling when you release an arrow and it flies with a whistle into the sky. It is not by chance that the bow and arrows are mentioned here, the fact is that an arrow (or even an arrow) is the main symbol of air, and with it the wind. Our forefathers, gunsmiths and archers, knew the laws of aerodynamics very well - they made it possible to create arrows and a bow - a Russian archer could easily cover a distance of more than 250 m with direct fire with a shot (compared to Western European and English archers, this figure is very, very large, it exceeds local indicators are more than 100 m.). Space was depicted with the help of arrows - one, two, four, eight. These arrows characterize the essence of space. In the case of two arrows, we have before us ascending and descending air currents, upper and lower layers of the atmosphere. Consider also a typical sign - four crossed arrows: north (winter), south (summer), west (night) and east (day) - again we have a unity of opposites, here you have progress and regression. Pay attention: horizontal line: east - progress, west - regression, vertical line: north - progress, south - regression. It is worth mentioning the circle drawn along this cross (as in the figure on the left) - it means the unity of the elements.

Triglav is honored as the god of space in Russia - the god of three heads, which, one might say, symbolize length, width and height. By the way, the invariable attribute of Triglav is a fiery sword, about which - in the previous section. The god of sea spaces is Pereplut - in general, his essence, is clear from the name, this god is represented by four heads, they symbolize the north, south, west and east. The god of the wind is Stribog with his younger brothers - Dogoda and Pozvizd, a pleasant breeze and a violent hurricane.

There is also a non-material space, as modern clowns-"magicians" would say, astral. That is, the space between the worlds, the great promstores of Prav and Navi. These symbols must be sought in the image of the World Tree, images of these worlds. Consider the "crown" of the World Tree, Rule - in front of us is the rune Algiz (Algiz) of the Elder Futhark, a rune of a passive order, and in the Vendian row we have a rune, which is called the World, that is, Rule, the inner Self, Belobog (a collective image of the bright Gods), genus. And now let's look at the roots of the World Tree, we have an inverted Algiz - active disorder, chaos, and in the Vendian runes - the Chernobog rune, the antagonism of the "Peace" rune. In my opinion, the connection is clear.

Symbolism of the union of two principles.

As can be seen above, the theme of unity and conflict of two diametrically opposed forces is one of their main, if not the main law in paganism, the law of the existence of the world. This is the dual pair of Prav-Nav, this is Day and night, this is, finally, a man and a woman. Rule - the kingdom of all-conquering truth, justice, the kingdom of bright gods, it houses a beautiful Irian garden with rejuvenating apples and a milky river, magical birds live in it, people who lived in the Java world according to the Rule get there - rightly, according to conscience (similar to the garden of the Hesperides Greek myths). Nav is a dark kingdom of chaos and destruction, dark gods and people live in it, living according to the laws of Krivda. The conflict between them is understandable - Nav is trying to destroy the world, Rule is trying to save it, observes its own order in it, their unity is that none of these forces can neither win nor lose, without them the world is not conceivable, their existence is a condition the existence of the world, their unity, we observe in the world of Reveal, the world of people, man, by the way, is the personification of the unity of these two forces (see the section “symbolism of water”). In general, one can talk endlessly about Prav and Navi, so we will refer those interested, for example, to the works of A. Platov, the Magi Veleslav, Velemir and Iggeld.

The dual pair of a man and a woman is, again, the union of two principles. It is believed that a man is dominated by a reasonable principle, in women - by a sensual one. This is in full agreement with the findings of modern psychology. If a man thinks, strives to put everything in order and balance (we will discard some “male” exceptions and sexual minorities), a woman tries to lead everything to chaos and imbalance (this is her normal environment of existence). Here we can draw an analogy with Prav and Navi, but this is still a slightly different conflict, in the humble opinion of the author, we cannot say that the man is the personification of Prav and the woman is Navi, however, we can say that both and others personify some features of the Rule and some features of Navi (it all depends on the person). If a person is inclined to Rule (in his personal battle on Kalinov Bridge, Rule wins), then he will show the sides of Rule: if this is a man, he will “think according to Rule”, like the bright gods, but if this is a woman, she will be " feel according to the Rule, as do the bright goddesses - Lada, Lelya, Zhiva and others. However, if a person is prone to Navi, he will be like Viy, Koshchey, the snake Yusha, or Morena (if it is a woman). The unity of a man and a woman symbolizes, as already mentioned, the cross and similar signs.

Another dual pair that cannot be considered is Heaven and Earth. This couple, in principle, is similar to the Man-Woman couple, but there are some differences. So, in the traditional view, the Earth is the mother, the Sky is the father. The sky fertilizes the earth with heavenly water, rain, the earth gives birth to plants. Such a parental aspect is the main one here, in contrast to the man-woman pair, where it fades into the background.

As for the symbols of such unifications, they are intertwined straight lines, merging, as a result, into one, intersecting straight lines, in short, two-part signs, turning into one-part ones.

Symbolism of the ideal

One of the most complex and little studied groups of symbols is the symbolism of the ideal. There are certainly many reasons for this. However, they do not at all reduce this gap in the study of the symbolism of Paganism.

What is the ideal in Paganism? Of course, some may spread about the primitiveness of it (Paganism), that, they say, there was no ideal at all; it did not exist at all. But this is not so - the fact that this problem is poorly studied does not mean that the pagan does not have an ideal. As we have repeatedly seen in the previous sections, in Paganism a huge, if not a key role is played by the struggle of opposites and, at the same time, their unity. For example, Prav-Nav couples, man-woman, chaos-order. This is one of the key principles in paganism - struggle and unity at the same time. Through this confrontation and at the same time, an inseparable union, harmony is achieved. It sounds harsh, but think about it: do you want to live in absolute order? - sounds threatening, doesn't it? Then it's just "Groundhog Day". What about absolute chaos? – also unlikely. Do you want to have only the mind and not have feelings?

And what we want to live with, for example, in the world of Rule, is simply not achievable in the Java world, since Yav is that area on the World Tree where unity occurs and at the same time the eternal war of Rule with Navi. All this is said in order to prevent judgments about the one-sidedness of the ideal. An ideal is always a combination of something with something. A simple example: a screw and a nut: they are completely different, but at the same time, they are ideally suited to each other: the nut is ideally screwed onto the screw, and it is screwed into the nut - this is the unity of opposites.

Simply put, for a pagan is the ideal golden mean. Not many people are able to see it, but any pagan must follow the principle of the Golden Mean, the optimal unity of two opposites. This does not apply only to Rule with Navi, because any pagan fights for Rule, he glorifies it (here's the "Orthodox" faith for you - Russian Christianity even has a pagan name). Of course, there are exceptions, but in general, the pagans live according to the Law. This is very important point: pay attention - not according to the law, namely according to the Rule, this is something like conscience, if someone else knows what it is. Therefore, the ancient Russ did not need any norms written down on a piece of paper - he himself perfectly understood that it was bad to cut everyone around, take someone else's, insult, and the police were not required for this: after all, a criminal who did something not according to the Law would be punished surrounding.

As for the image of the ideal, the situation is much worse than in other groups. However, one can still talk about how he was portrayed. Since the ideal is the harmony of all things, it is depicted as an egg. Everyone remembers, for example, the fairy tale about the chicken Ryaba, but few people know what a deep sacred meaning lies in it. These are the remains of an ancient myth. Let's think about it: the hen Ryaba, who can speak (and at the same time does not cause any surprise in Baba and Grandfather), demolished the owners golden egg, that is, brought harmony to the world. However, what do people do? Instead of saving the golden egg, they try to break the poor egg. At this point, let's stop and think: who, in fact, are these Grandfather and Baba? By the way, the pagans call their distant ancestors, respectively, Grandfathers and Baba. Baba is also a female ancestor. And this company of the first people is trying to destroy the harmony. Isn't it a familiar picture, how relevant this problem is today? But nothing comes out of them - people do not have enough strength to destroy what was created by the gods of the Rule (that is, the Pockmarked Chicken). And then a mouse appears, and no one, but a gray one. The gray mouse lives in a hole, that is, under the floor, that is, it belongs to Navi. And to be more precise, she is her personification (after all, she destroys harmony). And she comes not alone, but also with her tail at the ready - the mouse's tail looks like a small snake - this is also not accidental - the mouse tail is Yusha the Serpent, he is the World Serpent, he is the Fenrir wolf in Scandinavian Myths, because of which Ragnarok (end of the world) happened. And now the forces of Navi, together with Yusha, hit the harmony and break it - the egg falls and breaks (oh, how easy it is to break the harmony!). And well, Grandfather and Baba rejoice - after all, the testicle has broken - no, on the contrary, they cry - they do not like to live in disharmony (also a familiar picture - they will do things, and then weep). And well, the chicken Ryaba says, in fact, to her children, they say, do not worry, I will restore harmony (I will lay a new testicle) - here is the essence of Rule. We also note that in the tale there is a conflict between Ryaba and the mouse. And bad people - well, they are and they are. But: if there were no mouse (Navi) and the egg would not have broken, people would need Ryaba (Right) - hardly, such is the essence of people.

There is also a fairy tale about a kolobok with a similar plot. The Gingerbread Man also looks like an egg. All the same unlucky Grandfather and Baba miss their harmony, their ideal, imprudently leaving it on the window. But if they had not left it on the window, they would have destroyed it anyway through their materialistic needs - they would have eaten it (just as today high art turns into business). Through long searches, labors and efforts, Baba (namely Baba), following the impulse of Grandfather (the husband fertilized, the wife gave birth, forgive me for some vulgarity), Baba creates an ideal - a round bun. But as a result, leaving him, albeit not forever, but still for a while, they lose him. Will they be able to create another one? - It is unlikely that everything from everywhere has already been swept and scraped.

And the last. There is a myth in Paganism that at first instead of the Universe there was only an egg. The parent of the gods and all things, Rod, languished in the egg. But, with the forces of love, he destroyed his dungeon and created the world, the universe, the Earth (round, by the way). So, in a sense, the original harmony is lost forever. But do we need harmony in absolute emptiness? Why it is through love that harmony is destroyed is also understandable - love is always stress, shock, violation of harmony in good sense(this is why you can not live in absolute order). This myth is quite consistent with the Big Bang theory, which is very popular among astronomers. According to it, the Universe arose from the smallest particle of the greatest density - some process took place in this particle, and it exploded, so much so that all its contents scattered into an indefinite (but huge) number of parsecs around, stormy chemical reactions. As a result of this explosion, today we have what we have: the Earth, the Sun and the vast expanses of the Universe around.

Video

The video tells about the importance of Slavic amulets for our ancestors and in modern world. Prepared by the channel "Dawn of the Slavs".

Slavic symbols are patterns of traditional embroidery and house decorations, as well as items associated with Slavic Gods. Slavic symbols are worth knowing for the right choice of amulet. Understanding the symbolism of magical items helps to understand Slavic mythology, customs and signs.

Why you need to know Slavic symbols

Slavic symbolism is surprisingly rich. Look at the embroidery decorating traditional clothes. Everything in it is not accidental, every turn of the pattern, the sign inscribed in the overall pattern of embroidery - everything has its own meaning. However, for an uninitiated person, embroidery remains just an outdated way to decorate an outfit, the secret of Slavic symbols remains hidden.

Slavic symbolism is worth studying for this:

  • To understand Slavic myths and legends, their visual perception.
  • To understand the worldview of our ancestors.
  • To be able to read Slavic symbols on clothes, household items, home decorations, to determine the purpose of ritual objects.
  • To be able to choose a talisman for yourself and loved ones.

Sources of knowledge about Slavic symbolism

There are disputes about the origins of Slavic symbols. Some sources attribute ancient roots to our patterns, see them as complex schemes that describe the structure of the world. Others, on the contrary, are distrustful of Slavic symbols, even such famous ones as Kolovrat or the Star of Russia, calling them a remake.

Where is the truth? It is enough to look at the old clothes preserved in the northern houses self made, richly decorated Slavic symbols to make sure that it originated many centuries ago. However, grandparents, who still know how to embroider and cut traditional patterns, do not at all associate their meaning with space, with complex calculations, do not explain the origin of patterns with intricate theories.

We consider true all Slavic symbols that we meet in the decoration of houses, folk embroidery, amulets found in the excavations of ancient cities. And we are looking for a simple explanation, close to nature, connected with our myths. But simple does not mean primitive. It is in the simplicity of the Slavic pattern, in the ability to explain even to a small child the meaning of traditional patterns, that there is deep wisdom.

What Slavic symbols do we know?

We can divide Slavic characters into groups different ways. For instance, in relation to the Slavic Gods. Then Gromovik, also known as the Thunder Cross, and a forged ax will be next to each other. Both signs refer to the Slavic Thunder God Perun.

We can share signs according to their execution. Then we will single out the Slavic symbols that are depicted on amulets, embroidered on clothes, carved on the decoration of Slavic huts, and signs-objects. For example, the Star of Russia with sharp tips and the hammer, the symbol of the Blacksmith God, will become the sign of Svarog.

Some Gods have Slavic symbols associated with images of animals. Most of these signs are attributed to God Veles. Among its symbols we meet a serpentine, the seal of Veles in the form of a paw of a bear and a wolf. Even the Veles sign itself, in the form of an inverted letter “A”, is otherwise called “bull's head”.

The most universal is the division of signs according to their shape.
