Holy Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Patriarch Kirill: I ask everyone to preserve the spiritual unity of the Volnovakha Monastery

  • 11.09.2020

On Sunday, April 3, together with my friends, I visited the Holy Dormition St. Nicholas and Vasilevsky Monastery.

When the walls of a new monastery are erected on Earth and another candle of monastic prayer is lit before the Throne of the Lord in Heavenly Jerusalem, not only angels and people rejoice, but the whole universe rejoices: the sun, the moon, and myriads of stars. The birth of a monastery is an event on a universal scale, and, as a rule, it is preceded by a chain of special miraculous signs - signs of the Lord's mercy to the human race.

They say that a very long time ago, even before the revolution, Nikolskoye was consecrated by the presence of the Most Holy Theotokos. And at the place of Her appearance, among the endless Donetsk steppes, a healing spring gushed…
The Mother of God herself overshadowed all this with her mercy: here, in Nikolskoye, many pious people flocked to the settlement. Here, in this new Nazareth - the place of the manifestation of the Power of God, exiled nuns from the Crimean monasteries also found refuge, finding consolation amidst sorrows and hardships at the feet of the Blessed Virgin. Thus, monastic prayer ascended to the Lord from Nikolskaya village long before the foundation of the monastery.

And the people here are wonderful! It was not for nothing that at the dawn of the last century, on the site of two modest wooden rural churches, St. Nicholas and St. Vasily, in Nikolsky, two luxurious stone ones were erected - in honor of St. 1912) . Their beauty amazed them, and the cost at that time was unthinkable, as evidenced by the remains of some wonderful faience iconostasis from the Vasilyevsky church: many large city churches could not afford such expensive decorations.

After the October Revolution, the St. Nicholas Church was destroyed, St. Basil's was closed. But the pious people served forbidden prayers at the source of the Mother of God for a long time ... It was then that a legend arose in Nikolsky: when a monk comes to serve in the dilapidated St. Basil's Church, two cloisters will open in Nikolsky ...

And old-timers also say that one of the nuns of the Crimean Paraskevinsky monastery predicted the emergence of the Nikolsky Monastery. The prophecy said that the monastery in Nikolskoye would be erected after the arrival of the monk.

So, Vanyusha Sokur, the future Schema-Archimandrite Zosima, has not yet been born, but in the Book of LIFE the Lord has already prescribed his earthly path. The Most Holy Trinity, the Lord Almighty, from the vain ways of men, saw a man after His own heart, and long before his birth chose him as an instrument of His all-good will.

Hieromonk Savvaty (the future Schema-Archimandrite Zosima) came here in 1986. In a dilapidated temple without an iconostasis and in a burnt shed instead of a priest's house. The priest was brought on the Day of Remembrance of St. John Chrysostom, who was also once persecuted for his faith. Father Zosima served his first service at the Entry into the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos. The wind was blowing around the temple, and during the Liturgy, the parishioners' feet froze to the floor... But six months later, an iconostasis appeared in the temple, and near the temple, literally from scratch, they built a priestly house, a baptismal room, a refectory: Father Zosima always blessed to feed the pilgrims . He knew what hunger was.
When did he know this? Maybe when with his widowed mother, who at one time received a sentence for "religious propaganda" - attending the services of nuns, the spiritual children of John of Kronstadt - he lived on a beggarly twenty rubles a month? Or when Father Zosima himself was "chased" from one impoverished parish to another? So they wanted to break the "objectionable" who, in the era of eradicating any dissent and wholesale destruction of temples, restored temples. And to which, despite any prohibitions and recommendations "from above", people flocked from all sides. People who felt that there must be Someone in their life. That "Someone", the path to which the priest opened for them.

Later, the father’s spiritual children recalled that Father Zosima was also driven to Nikolskoye so that people simply would not be able to get to him: there was no direct transport to the village, and there was no passing one either. But in spite of all the obstacles, people found their way to Father Zosima...
The time of the main ministry of Father Zosima in Nikolskoye fell on the collapse of the Union. Businesses were closed. People haven't received their salaries for months. Children in the classroom fell into hungry swoons. And old people committed suicide. The people had nowhere to go. And they went to the father. With their troubles, sorrows, grief and sorrows, sometimes they are simply simply hungry.
Batiushka’s spiritual father Schemagumen Valentine instructed him: “When you serve in a parish, people will come to you from afar. Always feed the person!” And Father Zosima faithfully fulfilled this covenant: he fed all the visitors. And for those who were especially poor, he blessed them to give food and go on the road. He often helped with money. “Hunger is the most terrible feeling,” said the priest.
Batiushka got into the habit of not taking money for trebes. Father Zosima was deeply convinced: a hundred people will not pay, but then there will be one who will give so much that it will be enough to help hundreds. And there were always benefactors...
Over time, a refectory, an almshouse (House of Mercy), a hospital, a dentist's office appeared in Nikolskoye ... Everything for people.

The strength of this man's influence was extraordinary. A five-minute conversation with Father Zosima gave people back hope, a desire to live again... He radiated some kind of inner light and warmth that warmed and warmed the most desperate hearts. This ability to heal human souls (prayer, word, look) was the main miracle that people encountered in Nikolskoye. In some secret, inaccessible way, Father Zosima knew how to foresee and find exactly the only true way out that a person needed.

The faith of this man passed all the tests, was tempered in the crucible of suffering. Who knows, maybe that's why he aroused such trust in people. People trusted Father Zosima with the most precious thing - they gave obedience to their children. And he became their spiritual father. A united family gathered around the priest, brothers and sisters ...
The decision to found two monasteries in Nikolsky, male and female, was made by the priest after clinical death, in 1998. Having received the blessing of the ruling bishop, Father Zosima set to work.
Optina Hermitage at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries was the ideal of monastic dispensation (monasticism in spirit, not in clothes) for the priest: "... I educate in them the spirit of Optina Hermitage, the spirit of love, the spirit of hospitality, the spirit of friendliness - this is what I constantly educate in them "Whether my upbringing will be accepted depends on their hearts. May God grant that the spirit of love of the Optina great elders of the 19th century accompanies our young holy monastery, that you too find all the comfort, support, joy and spiritual strength here for further bearing your life's cross, to the glory of God." These testaments of the priests are kept in the monastery to this day.

The Most Holy Theotokos has always been considered the patroness of our Fatherland. And the Assumption churches were the main ones in most of the Russian monasteries. There is the Assumption Cathedral - an exact copy of the Kremlin - and in the Nikolsky Monastery: it was erected with the blessing of the priest after his death.
For monks, their entire earthly life path is nothing but the path to death, preparation for the transition to eternity - preparation for a meeting with the Lord. A monk is a person dying for the world in the resurrection of the future life. And the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos for him is the second evidence of immortality after the Resurrection of the Savior. A pledge of reward for a future bright life.
Perhaps that is why the priest considered the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary the second holiday after Easter - the second Easter. These days, the Shroud and the temple were unusually richly decorated, always with fresh flowers. And always within three days, the mothers renewed these flowers - so that they were always bright and fragrant.
Father Alexander from Vladimirovka, nearby Nikolsky, recalled that seven years before the father's death, at the Burial of the Most Holy Theotokos, someone called him and said that Father Zosima had died. Frightened father Alexander rushed to Nikolskoye. When Father Zosima found out about the incident, at first he laughed, and then suddenly thought and asked: “Can you imagine what it is like to die on the Burial of the Most Holy Theotokos?” The father repeated this question three times, and with such force, with such penetration, that Father Alexander could not stand it and shed tears. Seven years later, Schema-Archimandrite Zosima reposed in the Lord at the Burial of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Father Zosima knew that he would die on the Dormition. It's hard to say what it was. Maybe a gift of foreboding? The inhabitants of the monastery remember very well how, in the summer of his death, the already seriously ill father said to the old women whispering about him in one of the churches of the diocese: “No, I am still alive. And when I die, I will tell you.” And only later, in the monastery, he invited to the burial: "I invite you to the rite of burial of the Shroud. Bury the Mother of God ... Bury me."
... Two days before the Assumption of the Mother of God, Father Zosima was taken to the intensive care unit. Leaving the monastery, Father Zosima told the brethren in detail how to set up a canopy for the Most Holy Theotokos, where his coffin should stand... He said that he would come to the beginning of the Liturgy...
In the hospital, the priest was very worried, lest he ruin the feast of the Dormition for the brothers and sisters. So he died: not on the very holiday, when it is appropriate to rejoice, but on the Burial of the Mother of God, when it is appropriate to cry. On the night of the Burial of the Mother of God in the monastery, they also mourned for the priest.......

Eight years have passed since the founder of the St. Nicholas Holy Dormition Monastery, Schema-Archimandrite Zosima, passed away to the Lord. But as before, people rush to the priest - to the monastery. People still say: I'm not "going to Nikolskoye", but "I'm going to the priest".

So we went to the father. And I happened to get into his chapel twice. The first time right after the service, having stood in line with the same pilgrims as we are. They went in, lit candles, mentally turned to Father Zosima with their petitions and left, giving everyone the opportunity to visit him. And the second time, when half an hour was left before the departure from Nikolsky, and we decided to walk along the streets of the monastery again. The time was approaching one o'clock, the pilgrims from Donetsk and other nearby cities had almost left. When they arrived at the chapel, there was no one around. So Natasha and I once again entered and knelt before the grave of this holy man. There was a feeling in our hearts that we had visited the living father of Zosima.

Entrance to the monastery

Leaving for eternity, Schema-Archimandrite Zosima, as the apple of his eye, bequeathed to keep in the monastery the ancient Jerusalem Rule, all those features of the services that he, as a zealous servant, inherited from his mentors. Father Zosima lived by the beauty of divine services, each of his services was an unforgettable celebration, truly "heaven on earth."
And this special “Zosima” solemnity and majesty of the services is the spiritual heritage that the inhabitants of the monastery sacredly keep and thanks to which the pilgrims get the impression that the Elder is alive, that he still leads the entire monastery today: “It’s just that he now serves in another church, somewhere near"

One of the features of the St. Nicholas traditions is that those who pray often (even during Bright Week) pray on their knees, which also comes from the Elder (by the way, kneeling prayers are allowed in many Athos monasteries during Bright Week). can we listen to "Our Father" while standing? Only it is necessary to turn to our Heavenly Father with reverence and trepidation on our knees. And when one day one of the pilgrims was tempted in her thoughts by the fact that in Nikolskoye so many people pray on their knees in the service, the Elder in In a conversation with her, he himself answered her thoughts "" And you know how I used to, when my legs were healthier, I loved to pray on my knees: and on your knees turn to the Lord, when you feel compunction and reverence in your heart - this is pleasing to the Lord "

With the blessing of the Father, in Nikolskoye it is customary to kiss the icons not in the image, but in the frame of the icon case - out of humility, as Father Zosima explained and did this himself: “Are we worthy to touch the sacred image with our sinful lips? No, we only kiss the frame ... "

With the blessing of Father Zosima, the Unsleeping Psalter is read in the Almshouse and in the Nursing Corps. And the entire yearly and weekly cycle of worship is performed strictly as the Elder himself determined it.

The shrine of the Nikolskaya monastery is a holy storehouse.
With the blessing of the Elder, a well was dug near St. Basil's Church, which was consecrated in honor of Zosima and Savvatiy of Solovetsky. On this well, Father performed prayers for the blessing of water. "I prayed that the Lord would give this water the power to heal various diseases," the schemer once said. And the prayers of the Elder worked a miracle: the bitter and salty water, which at first it was impossible to drink, became sweet and pleasant.

The pilgrims take this water as a sacred thing, many having experienced its healing power.

Monastery store, where you can buy icons, church utensils, buy candles, order prayers for health and repose.

Refectory for pilgrims.
We were in the dining room. We ate deliciously cooked rice soup and wheat porridge. The dining room is spacious. Everyone is treated here for free. Few of the pilgrims know that in the pilgrimage meal (one of the most difficult obediences) they work for Christ for the sake of the schema woman - after all, Father Zosima blessed them for this holy work.
And in the kitchen, on the wall, also with the blessing of the Elder, there is an inscription: "Keep silence - the Jesus Prayer is being done."
The schemnik often repeated, like the alphabet: "When your hands are working, do not idle talk, but do the Jesus prayer, so you will have spiritual fruit, and your work will be blessed"

Father especially loved flowers - these islands of paradise on a sinful earth. Here are the first spring flowers near the refectory.

St. Basil's Monastery is located in the village of Nikolskoye, Volnovakha district, Donetsk region, on the site of the former rural parish of St. Basil's, in which in 1912, at the expense of parishioners and benefactors, instead of the old wooden church, a stone church was built, consecrated in honor of St. Basil the Great. In 1954, the temple was restored in its current form with one dome and a bell tower, and has not been closed since then.

Even after the October Revolution, a legend arose in the village of Nikolskoye: when a monk comes to serve in St. Basil's Church, two monasteries will open here. Hieromonk Savvaty (the future Schema-Archimandrite Zosima) arrived in 1986 in a dilapidated temple without an iconostasis and in a charred barn instead of a priest's house. Through the labors of hegumen Savvaty, the temple was restored, a baptismal with the rector's chambers and a pilgrimage with a refectory were built. In 1990 hegumen was elevated to the rank of archimandrite, and in 1992 he was tonsured a schema with the name Zosima. A fraternal building was built, an almshouse, a House of Mercy for the care of the infirm and the elderly. And in 2001, the St. Nicholas sister community of the village of Nikolskoye was given the status of a monastery, in 2002 the St. Basil Monastery was registered.

The abbot of the monastery until his death (in August 2002) was Schema-Archimandrite Zosima. At present, the Hieroarchimandrite and rector of the monastery is Metropolitan Hilarion of Donetsk and Mariupol. On May 7, 2005, Metropolitan Hilarion elevated the abbot of the monastery, shiigumen Alipiy (Bondarenko) to the rank of schiarchimandrite.

Temples of the monastery: St. Basil's stone church with a hipped bell tower over the entrance; The refectory church of All Saints who shone in the Russian Land, built for the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ; the stone cold church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker with a bell tower above the entrance, built in 1910, is located on the opposite side of the village and belongs to the monastery. For a long time it was closed and used as a warehouse, workshops, slaughterhouse. Now it has been restored, services are held in it on Sundays and great holidays in the warm season. In the priest's house there is a house church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "The Sign" for worship in the winter season.

The monastery has a bakery, a library, a medical outpatient clinic for residents, workshops (carpentry, wood carving, gold embroidery, sewing, icon painting, furniture making).

In 2004, a house church was opened in the almshouse of the monastery in honor of St. Sampson the Hospitable. The construction of the bell tower with the gate church of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God has been completed. The construction of the Holy Dormition Cathedral is nearing completion.

On August 29, 2002, Schema-Archimandrite Zosima died. The rector of St. Basil's Church in the village of Nikolskoye, Volnovakhsky District, was known to the entire Orthodox world. He was known in Jerusalem, and on Holy Athos, and Moscow, and Kyiv. But in the Donbass itself, not everyone heard about him, and only a small handful of the inhabitants of Nikolsky went to their native village church, in which, through the prayers of the Elder, many human souls were cured. “He was only 58 years old. But wisdom, the power of faith and knowledge of the human soul made him an Elder in human understanding. They came to him from everywhere. For advice, help, blessings. Those who had the great happiness to communicate with him returned to a peaceful life kinder, cleaner, brighter. He healed people's souls, thereby healing the bodies as well. His words were often prophetic. And the events that took place were like miracles. He had an infinite love for people. Everyone. Those who tortured him, forcing him to stand barefoot for days on a concrete floor, and those who sent him to serve from parish to parish, away from highways and civilization - in order to break him down faster. He didn't break. He bore his cross with dignity, not one iota wavering in faith. He baptized the children of his executioners. He forgave sins and believed in the bright nature of every person. He lived, experiencing inhuman suffering. He went through four clinical deaths and the fight against the disease. Physicians became believers by associating with him and marveled at his courage. And he, dying, got up and served. His way is the way of the righteous. And the righteous are now a rarity. Father Zosima was called the last saint of Russia, in whose unity he sacredly believed. He planted good seeds. And they will bear fruit. Fruits of Goodness and Faith. This is how one of the Donbass newspapers wrote about Starets on the anniversary of his death. Nadezhda is not a native of Petrozavodsk. Long ago, back in those days when there was no border between Ukraine and Russia, she came to cold and distant Karelia. Her female lot was not easy. Left alone, with a sick child in her arms. Suffered a lot. And when it was especially unbearable with her mental pain, she went to her native Donetsk region - to the elder Zosima. For advice. She first came to the monastery eight years ago. “Through the prayers of the Elder,” Nadezhda says, “I got an apartment. For me it was the most difficult time. When I first saw Father Zosima, I was taken aback. I want to express everything that hurts my soul, and I can’t utter a word, but only cry bitterly. “I bless you for dispensation,” the Elder said then, and we immediately received an apartment. And when I found out that I was from Petrozavodsk, I said that I studied with Archbishop Manuel at the Leningrad Theological Academy at the same time, and conveyed my regards to Vladyka.” The elder always walked around in a simple old fur coat, saying: “How can I put on something good if I see poverty and human pain around me.” There were open wounds on his legs. But he endured pain, forgetting about himself for the sake of helping people. “Oh, my unfortunate,” he often said when I approached him for a blessing. The elder felt my pain and worried about my son and me. He was very happy when I told him that my son agreed to work in the church and affectionately said: “Look that my baby is not offended.” “I remember,” says Nadezhda, “how the Elder, passing by a praying woman who had lived in a monastery for a long time, said: “Get together and then pray. We prayed earnestly." He always spoke with compassion for his interlocutor. He would leave the cell and immediately approach the people who immediately surrounded him from all sides. Through his prayers, many were healed. But some he denounced. If you want, listen, if you don't want - as you know. He spoke about sins, and people rejoiced, repented, wept and thanked him. With denunciation and advice, he pulled people out of a soulless swamp. For this, many were grateful to the Elder.

Life and Blessed Death of Elder Zosima
"I ask you to write ... without distorting anything, so that the historical truth of my past life can be restored."
From the testament of Schema-Archimandrite Zosima

At the very end of last summer, Schema-Archimandrite Zosima, known not only in the Donbass, but also far beyond its borders, passed away to the Lord. He was the spiritual father of the priesthood of the entire Donetsk diocese, the brethren and sisters of the two monasteries he founded, as well as the beloved priest of many laity who followed him everywhere for a quarter of a century. Many well-known businessmen and politicians were among his spiritual children, for example, Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Gennady Vasiliev and Prime Minister of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, whom the elder personally married.

Our reference

Schema-Archimandrite Zosima (in the world Ivan Alekseevich Sokur) was born on September 3, 1944 in the village of Kosolmanka, Sverdlovsk Region. Since 1951 he lived in the city of Avdeevka, Donetsk region, where in 1961 he graduated from high school. Then he studied at the Donetsk Agricultural College and was engaged in civil work.
From 1968 to 1975 studied at the theological seminary and academy in Leningrad. He graduated from the Academy with a degree of Candidate of Theological Sciences. In the same 1975, he took monastic vows with the name Savvaty and was ordained first as a hierodeacon, then as a hieromonk. After studying, he served in Odessa for several months, after which on December 25, 1975 he was admitted to the clergy of the Voroshilovgrad-Donetsk diocese. He conducted all his further spiritual and pastoral activities in the Donbass. In 1980 he was elevated to the rank of abbot, in 1990 - to the rank of archimandrite. On August 21, 1992, he was tonsured into the schema with the name Zosima.
Reposed on August 29, 2002

ten years later
I myself saw the priest for the first time in February 1992, at the very height of the church turmoil provoked by the then primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Filaret (Denisenko), who was later anathematized for the schism and other sins. Filaret sought to break with the Russian Orthodox Church and impose autocephaly on the Ukrainian flock. At a time when most of the clergy "for fear of the Jews" supported him or took a wait-and-see position, Father Savvaty (that was the name of the elder Zosima before he accepted the great schema) was one of the few who firmly and unwaveringly stood for the unity of the Church . Batiushka openly declared that “Filaret wanted to become a Patriarch” - they say, that is why he is seeking autocephaly.
By the way, among the very few clergymen who uncompromisingly defended the unity of the Church in those troubled days, both in word and deed, was the then Dean of the Donetsk District, Archpriest Fr. Gennady (Timkov). During the most tense period of confrontation, when the ruling Bishop Alypiy, who opposed the autocephaly, was excommunicated from the Donetsk see, he turned out to be the most prominent figure among dissidents in the diocese and, with his passionate sermons, instilled hope in people and strengthened stamina. In just a month and a half, Father Gennady outlived the elder Zosima and, at less than 49 years old, died on the very eve of the feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. They say that the archpriest, who had recently been in a coma, on the day when the fortieth anniversary of the death of Father Zosima was celebrated, suddenly came to his senses. He was informed that the newly-departed Schema-Archimandrite was being commemorated today. And he replied: “I know, we met with him THERE today.” Less than a week later, the archpriest also reposed in Bose...
Upon learning of the death of Elder Zosima, I remembered that ten years ago he gave me various advice, to which I did not listen much then, for I had not even been baptized yet, but simply sympathized with Orthodoxy and wrote about him in the newspapers. Batiushka dictated several such instructions for me to a certain Valentina Ivanova, who often visited him in the village of Nikolskoye, Volnovakha District, where he was already serving at that time. She wrote them down on slips of paper and brought them to my office. In these small letters, the priest listed my sins, turned to the Lord with requests to enlighten me, and also gave instructions on further newspaper publications about Orthodoxy. However, at that time I did not attach much importance to all this.
Only after the death of the elder, having shoveled through my papers, I hardly found these notes. At the very end of the last of them, dated November 23, 1992, it was written: “The next article will be about the great ascetics of the last, present time ...” And now, ten years later, I have fulfilled this order of the priest and wrote an article about one from the ascetics of "the last, present time." About Schema-Archimandrite Zosima himself.

And the people followed him
He was known as an old man almost at the age of 40, if not even earlier. In Orthodoxy, after all, an elder is not an age concept. This is how the people call those who see the sins of people who come to him, who wisely instruct their spiritual children, who are distinguished by their perspicacity and a special gift of prayer...
A graduate of the Leningrad Theological Academy, hieromonk Savvaty (the future Zosima) arrived in Donbass in the mid-70s - then he was in his 32nd year. In those very deaf times of "stagnation", when the Church was closely "patronized" by the organs, rarely any of the clergy dared to "liberties" - they were limited to performing divine services and fulfilling the requirements. Father Savvaty set to work energetically, zealously and informally. And although he was appointed to serve on the outskirts of Donetsk - in the village of Aleksandrovka, Maryinsky district, very soon the rumor about the young rector of the church of St. Alexander Nevsky began to spread rapidly among the believers of the regional center and beyond.
“My mother and I then lived in the Kalininsky district of Donetsk,” says schema-nun Theophania from the St. Nicholas Monastery founded by the priest. - A rumor has reached us that a priest has appeared in Aleksandrovka, who confesses each one separately. This was a rarity at that time - mostly general confessions were practiced. Mom asked me to take her there. And so we got out on the Feast of the Exaltation. We were impressed by the service itself, and the soulful sermon of the priest, and his cordiality. We began to travel to Aleksandrovka regularly.
Other believers also reached out to the Alexander Church, weary of the formal ecclesiasticism that prevailed at that time and looking for a genuine spiritual life. Gradually, a whole group of spiritual children formed around Father Savvaty, who obeyed him in everything and helped him, and also followed him wherever he was transferred.
Then, almost all of them became the first inhabitants of the monasteries founded by the elder in the village of Nikolsky, Volnovakha region. So, father Zosima bequeathed to appoint Hieromonk Thaddeus, who was brought up before his eyes from childhood, as the abbot of the Assumption St. Basil Monastery. The novice Viktor Ivanovich Grigorenko, who has been with the priest since 1976, shared all the hardships with him and helped him in all economic affairs, serves as the monastery's housekeeper. Many spiritual children of the elder also live in the almshouse created at the cloisters. “Once upon a time, these old women fed me, gave me their last pennies,” Father Zosima said during one of his sermons. "Now it's my turn to take care of them."
Naturally, the growing popularity of the priest could not please the competent authorities, who fought against "religious intoxication." Righteous anger aroused among the "Chekists" and the fact that he did not agree to cooperate with them. They began to complicate the life of the hieromonk in every possible way, they insisted on his transfer to another church, then to a third, fourth ... They were exiled to distant remote villages, in the hope that the admirers of Father Savvaty would leave him behind. But the opposite effect was achieved - not only his former spiritual children followed the persecuted priest, but many new believers also joined them. Martyrs and sufferers in Russia have always been loved.
- In order to break the priest, he was transferred mainly in winter, and to unheated, half-abandoned churches, - Viktor Ivanovich Grigorenko recalls. - For example, in December 1985, they were sent to the village of Andreevka, Velikonovoselkovsky District. Then it was 30-degree frost outside - and the same temperature was in the local wooden temple. Despite this, the priest served the Liturgy. Feet in felt boots froze, hands stuck to the bowl with Communion - he would warm them up a little by the heaters that we placed on the floor, and continued to serve ... Almost the same frosts were when he was - again in December! - sent to Nikolskoye, but he immediately began to serve there. And in what a terrible state the old St. Basil's Church was there! When the priest entered there and opened the Royal Doors in the altar, one leaf fell off and collapsed. The floors were rotten, the roof was full of holes - during the rain it flowed so much that basins had to be placed all over the temple.

Elder Builder
But the priest never lost heart and did not give up, but immediately began to bring each of his new places into the Divine form.
- I was always amazed by his church building, - says Metropolitan Hilarion of Donetsk and Mariupol. - Wherever he came to serve, everywhere he immediately started major repairs and construction. I remember how in 1980, when I was still serving as a psalm reader in the Holy Assumption Church in Donetsk, on the feast of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God, we went to Father Savvaty in Aleksandrovka to consecrate the new throne. He managed to make this throne in the very period when churches in the USSR were only closed and destroyed. At the time, it was almost a sensation.
In general, according to V. Grigorenko, this Alexander church, thanks to the efforts of the priest, began to look “like a casket” from the inside. He built a lot of things there, even though the authorities forbade it. For example, the chapel, which was built over the well, was completely dismantled - they say, "it's not allowed." Even in Velikonovoselkovskaya Andreevka, where Father Savvaty did not serve even half a year, he managed to overlay the church with bricks and improve the house for the priest. After that, he was engaged in beautification in another Andreevka (near Snezhnoye) - until he was transferred to Nikolskoye.
And there his building talent manifested itself in full force. In the very first year, they repaired the church: they blocked the roof, restored the iconostasis and the bell tower demolished by the Bolsheviks, conducted electricity, expanded the house for the priest, built a baptismal room, then made a fence and a gate with arches, the drawing of which the priest drew himself. At first, there were almost no specialists at the construction site, but on the other hand, hundreds or more people came to work for the glory of God - both local residents and visiting spiritual children, many of whom lived here for weeks or months.
So gradually, in Nikolskoye, a monastery began to form, as it were, by itself. By the end of the 90s, in fact, on the same territory, two monasteries were founded here at once: the male St. Vasilevsky and the female St. Nicholas. There are very few such precedents in the Orthodox world.
It is difficult to describe how much construction has been going on here in recent years and how much has already been built - it's hard to describe, you just need to see it. Those who come here for the first time at first cannot believe their eyes - what they see does not coincide with the established ideas about monasteries. The new refectory church in memory of all the saints who shone in the Russian land, and the rest of the monastery buildings are made of light facing bricks, the roofs are made of green metal tiles, the windows and doors are made of fashionable expensive metal-plastic. In all cells and other rooms, speakers are installed through which the services taking place in St. Basil's Church are broadcast - for those monks and inhabitants of the almshouse who, for whatever reason, cannot attend them. In the cells, the monks also have tape recorders with headphones so that they can listen to recordings of akathists, canons and other hymns.
However, not all technical achievements and modern technologies are accepted here. Elder Zosima forbade starting televisions and video recorders, and even in his will he emphasized that they “should never be in the monastery.”
According to his last will, set forth in this will, construction in the monastery continues today. The foundation of another temple has been laid, a hotel for pilgrims and a new almshouse are being built: the old one is already crowded. It builds its own post office and even its own point of law enforcement, various utility rooms. There is already a hospital, a library, a bakery, workshops, an icon shop here. All this is also made of expensive bricks, tiles and metal-plastic.
But this is how “rich” is built here, of course, not for the monks to wallow in luxury and enjoy the delights of life. And in former times, temples and cloisters were always made from the most beautiful, solid and durable materials, striving to give God all the best. By the way, although the cells here are made in the "Eurostyle", the very decoration in them is rather ascetic. Yes, and there are residents in them mainly only in the evening and at night - when they pray and sleep. The rest of the time they perform various obediences or participate in divine services, which here sometimes last for six or seven hours in a row.
This begs the question: how, for what money and in just a few years, Elder Zosima managed to build this, as it is jokingly called, Euromonastery almost from scratch? He did not knock on thresholds in search of money, did not bow to high offices, did not ask anyone for anything. Except for God, to whom he prayed tirelessly. Benefactors were themselves: inspired by the example of active love for God and people, they offered disinterested help. These were not the kind of donors who donate to charity more often because of some kind of marketing considerations, a desire to score political points, or simply out of vanity. Usually such wealthy people came to Father Zosima, who did not advertise their good deeds, but rather, on the contrary, according to the gospel commandment, sought to hide them. So, until today, even in Nikolsky itself, very few people know that both local cloisters, as well as many churches in Donetsk and far beyond its borders, were built mainly by the forces of the Energo concern, which is headed by Viktor Leonidovich Nusenkis, the spiritual son of Father Zosima.
Accepting with gratitude the help and donations from patrons, the elder, however, worried not only about the splendor of his monastery, but ordered the benefactors to take care of other churches and monasteries. First, he gave his blessing to restore the Holy Dormition Monastery in Donetsk Svyatogorsk, to help restore the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece and the Gornensky Monastery of the Russian Mission in Jerusalem, and only then did extensive construction begin in Nikolsky. With the blessing of Zosima (and, of course, the ruling Bishop Hilarion), the churches of Agapit of the Caves, John the Warrior and the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God (in Donetsk), a church in honor of the prudent robber (in the Selidov penal colony in the village of Ostroye) were also built or continue to be built. In addition, the Schema-Archimandrite gave his blessing for the restoration of the Holy Don Monastery in the village of Starocherkasskaya, Rostov Region, and the creation of the Pleskovo Orthodox Gymnasium in the Moscow region.

"It's easy to live with a blessing"
In general, special mention must be made of the blessing of the priest. Some of them came to Nikolskoye primarily in order to get it. The local pilgrims and inhabitants willingly tell stories from their lives - with different content, but with a similar ending. Like, for a long time something didn’t go well for them at work or at home, and soon after meeting with the elder Zosima and his blessing, they began to notice with surprise that seemingly insoluble problems seemed to dissipate by themselves, things were argued, diseases receded, in general - life is getting better.
There was no special mysticism here, just the elder knew how to understand each person at first glance, to tell him exactly what he needs at the moment, to comfort, to nourish with grace. And, of course, pray fervently for everyone. People came out of him joyful and elated, they had a kind of second wind, helping to easily overcome all difficulties. They were convinced with their own eyes that, as the housekeeper Viktor Ivanovich said, “it’s easy to live with the blessing!”
There were always a lot of people who wanted to get an appointment with Zosima. Basically, poor and sickly ordinary people lined up for him. But businessmen, generals, and politicians often came to the elder... As the governor of the Donetsk region, the new Prime Minister of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, quite often visited Nikolskoye on unofficial visits. Moreover, Father Zosima even married him to his wife Lyudmila Alexandrovna, who also loved to visit the monastery. The vice-speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Gennady Vasiliev, also visited the elder.
For each, he had the right words and answers to the questions that tormented him. But, of course, not everyone was satisfied. After all, some came to the elder in the hope that he would approve their own, not entirely charitable plans. He made fun of such people or even kicked them out. There were just anecdotes. For example, one old woman asked: "Father, there is not enough money to pay for the light - bless me to rewind the meter readings"...

"I'm not perspicacious, but gluttonous"
Sometimes the schiarchimandrite warned those who came to him that if they continued to act “according to their own will”, and not according to God’s command, then this could end badly for them. So, according to one of the monks close to the elder, in 1996, a well-known Donetsk businessman, People's Deputy of Ukraine Yevgeny Shcherban came to him twice in 1996. After listening to him, the priest gave a number of advice, but the distinguished guest did not heed them .... And six months later, Yevgeny Shcherban, together with his wife, was shot at the Donetsk airport.
In general, there are legends about the foresight of the elder Zosima. During his lifetime, he himself did not like such conversations very much. Once he spoke about this with his usual humor: “I am not perspicacious, but gluttonous!” Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the monastery and the laity, who knew the schiarchimandrite, confirm that he undoubtedly had the gift of foresight. However, they advise treating stories about cases of the elder's foresight with prudent caution, especially enthusiastic "woman's fables" in which he is portrayed almost as a prophet.
Of course, the most impressive thing is that Father Zosima predicted his death - to the nearest day and hour. Long before his death, it was revealed to him that he would die on the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Somewhere a year or two before his death, he ordered every Wednesday to sing an akathist to the Assumption of the Mother of God. In general, after Easter, this holiday was his favorite. A week before him, the priest celebrated the day of his Angel. In 2002, those who came to congratulate him, including Vladyka Hilarion, Zosima unexpectedly invited them to come to the Burial of the Mother of God (it takes place the day after the Assumption) - they say, bury Her and me at the same time. And on the very eve of this date, when the elder was taken to the hospital, he ordered that this time the rite of Burial be performed in the evening, and not in the afternoon, as in previous years. As he was leaving, the priest said: “You serve the Burial, and I will come to the Liturgy.” That is exactly what happened. He died in the hospital at 11:45 pm, just at the moment when the funeral service ended in Nikolskoye, and the coffin with his body was brought to the monastery early in the morning, before the start of the Liturgy.
- Father Zosima foresaw the death of my mother. - Bishop Hilarion says. - She was seriously ill, was paralyzed. I was going to go to her in Lugansk on the second day of Easter, since on the very feast of the Holy Resurrection of Christ I was supposed to serve in Mariupol. And then the day before, Father Zosima calls on the phone and so categorically declares: “Go, Vladyka, to your mother right on Easter, otherwise you will regret and repent later!” Although I was busy that day and very tired, I still listened to him and visited my mother on a holiday - I christened with her, ate a consecrated testicle ... And literally the next day she died.
They say that the priest not only foresaw some individual events, but often, at the first glance at a person, he could penetrate his soul, guess what was tormenting and tormenting her. Some were embarrassed by the fact that he immediately began to list all their sins, moreover, not “in a flash”, but specific ones, others were surprised that he, as it were, reads their thoughts ...
“When I first came to Father Zosima, he, among other things, warned me to be afraid of “injury and rejection,” recalls schema nun Euphrosyne. - And just shortly before that, a kidney was transplanted to me, which my mother gave me. And when, two weeks after the trip to Nikolskoye, I hurried to the hospital for procedures, I fell right on the roadway and tore a ligament in my leg. At the same time, the donor kidney began to work worse ... Then I once again came to the monastery, stood there in the temple, prayed that the Lord would reveal His will to me and help me decide in life, and immediately reproached myself for the fact that everything time throws me from side to side - now to the right, then to the left. I then thought about whether I should go to a teacher training school, or ask for a monastery. And at the same time I was afraid that no one needed me so sick either there or there. After that, I go to the priest, and he says: “Yes, you should learn how to marry me!” (And he was a monk who took a vow of celibacy). And he continues literally with the same words that I mentally uttered before: “Well, so that you don’t get thrown either to the right or to the left, I’ll cut you into a nun.”

He took someone else's pain as his own.
Father Zosima was also united with the schema-nun Euphrosyne by a common illness - like her, the elder also had big problems with the kidneys. Over time, he developed acute renal failure, and he lived only thanks to the fact that every other day he underwent hemodialysis for four hours - with the help of the "Artificial Kidney" apparatus, they cleansed the blood of toxins and toxins.
Batiushka also suffered greatly from osteomyelitis of the bones of his legs, on which he had unhealed ulcers when he served in Alexandrovka. And recently this misfortune has become so aggravated that he could hardly walk on his own, and he was taken in a wheelchair. These ailments were accompanied by a whole "bouquet" of other diseases. The temperature rose from time to time - up to 41 degrees. He even had a chance to survive clinical death.
But despite all these unbearable sufferings, until his very last days he did not stop serving the Liturgy, preaching, talking with people, and also building two monasteries at once. Even among healthy people, it is very rare that anyone is capable of this.
As soon as after another severe crisis and exacerbation of illnesses, Father Zosima felt a little better, when he immediately became cheerful and rushed to the temple, to the service. His joyful spirit and his steadfastness amazed the attending physicians, and they, looking at the elder and communicating with him, also gained faith. Some of them became his spiritual children. Then he often used this "blat" - he asked the doctors he knew to treat for free or perform an operation on the suffering, who turned to him for help. In this way, the priest saved many lives.
Others he just begged for. People who were on the verge of life and death said that they clearly felt his prayerful help, which helped them get out. For example, when Batiushka was still serving in Aleksandrovka, a woman from Trudovskie was brought to his church, who was ill with leukemia. Doctors told her relatives that she was already hopeless, she would not last even a week, and they discharged her home. Die. She sat in the wheelchair for the entire Liturgy, during which the elder prayed for her at the throne - her condition did not noticeably improve, but she did not die in a week, as predicted. The next Sunday the woman confessed and took communion. She got a little better. In general, after two months she was already walking to the service with her own legs. And they say she is still alive, although more than 20 years have passed since then.
But more often they remember more “ordinary” stories. Like this. The young guy was overzealous in exercising with a barbell, and an inguinal hernia got out of him. Complained to Father Zosima. He promised to pray for him. In the morning the guy woke up - a hernia, as if it had never happened. But then, they say, she appeared at the very old man. In general, most of the spiritual children of the priest are sure that because he was so sick and sick, he took on other people's infirmities and sufferings.

Ordinary miracles
Zosima himself scolded those who spoke of him as a healer. He was always resented by this unhealthy interest in miraculous healings and other supernatural phenomena.
He liked to repeat: “The real miracle is that the Lord brings great sinners into His Church. Look who has gathered here in the monastery? Former thieves, fornicators, prostitutes, in general - every rabble, garbage of the human race. And everyone serves and prays to the Lord!”
But the most important miracle for believers, Father Zosima constantly emphasized, is the Eucharist and the service of God at which it is celebrated.
He himself had a very reverent attitude to worship and to everything connected with the Church. Back in the “stagnant” times, when it was difficult to get anything, he went to commission shops, went to Mariupol, where sailors brought goods from abroad, looked for brocade and other fabrics for priestly vestments, he himself dangled to Moscow for church utensils and books . He liked very much that everything was magnificent in the temple. And I never buy things for myself. He went about in a patched-patched cassock and a well-worn sheepskin coat.
Batiushka also collected various Orthodox shrines, as well as ancient utensils, ancient prayer icons, shabby robes, banners, books... There are more than a hundred particles of the relics of saints in the monastery - almost all icons have them. Father Zosima even managed to find icons that belonged to the saints, in particular, the Mother of God image of the Three Joys, which belonged to the Tsar-Martyr Nicholas II himself. Somehow, the hat of the righteous John of Kronstadt, which on the day of his memory is put on the head of all those who participated in the divine service, got into the monastery.
By the way, the royal passion-bearers and righteous John were among the most beloved saints of the father. And the diary of the Kronstadt pastor "My Life in Christ" was his reference book. He even tried to imitate him. He also dreamed of building a House of Diligence near the monastery, with various workshops - icon painting, gold embroidery, blacksmithing, woodcarving ... Those who knew him closely say that Father Zosima was close to the holy righteous and in spirit - he was just as joyful, cheerful and resilient.
During his sermons, the priest never tired of repeating to his flock: “Never lose heart, do not offend the mercy of God with your whining. Be joyful and bright! Pray to the Lord, but just do not grind, do not be mad in prayers - do not fall into this spiritual delusion, which leads to even greater despondency and despair.

They pray to him like a saint
The schiarchimandrite left many spiritual precepts. When in recent years it was realized that the death of the elder was already close, some monks and lay people began to write down his long sermons.
And those who simply listened to his words were amazed every now and then that during these sermons addressed to everyone, the priest gave very specific answers to questions that worried them, but were not expressed aloud. The elder, as it were, saw the innermost thoughts and aspirations of everyone. Therefore, many, in order not to once again bother the seriously ill priest with their problems, even stopped rushing to see him, because they had no doubt that he would still hear and reason with them.
Often during these sermons, Father Zosima denounced both those standing in the church and all those whom he considered enemies of the Church. He especially hit, as he called them, “nationalist Bandera, Filaretists, autocephalists, sectarians, psychics” ... Sometimes, he scolded negligent Orthodox priests. In general, he was very straightforward, cutting the truth-womb, regardless of the faces. So, of course, amassed a lot of ill-wishers. Many of the elder's views were regarded as "politically incorrect", not fitting into modern political realities. At times, those who came to the monastery were jarred by some of his rather salty jokes and strong words. Of course, like everyone else, the priest also had enough shortcomings and sins - the Lord is one without sin. Even the saints had a lot of them. But Father Zosima is not a saint! However, how do you know...
Some even during his lifetime considered the elder almost a saint. And as soon as the schiarchimandrite went to the Lord, they began to pray near the tomb not as for the deceased, but as for the already glorified saint of God. And now monks and pilgrims come to the chapel in which the elder rests, not only to pray for the repose of his soul, but to ask the deceased for help and advice. How used to do it during his lifetime.
Some say that the priest appears to them in a dream, others simply feel his living help.
“Father Zosima said that in the next world he would no longer be sick, and therefore there he would only have to pray for all of us,” says Zinaida Ivanovna Onopchuk, chairman of the Society for the Disabled of the Kievsky District of Donetsk. - And not only those who knew the elder feel this prayerful help of his. Recently, a mother of many children, exhausted by a hopeless beggarly life, complained to me about life. I advised her to address the priest - as if she were alive. He shrugged his shoulders - they say, how will I address him if I never knew him ?! And after a while, she calls me so joyful and says: “I tried to pray to the elder on your advice - and I really felt that he was somewhere nearby and supported me.”
This is not the only example of how even people who are completely unfamiliar with Father Zosima find grace-filled consolation in him. That is why the flow of pilgrims who came to Nikolskoye to see and hear the elder does not dry up even after his death. The chapel with the grave of the priest became a new shrine of the monastery.

15 years have passed since that memorable, mournful, according to human judgment, day, when our dear Father, the founder of two monasteries, the Holy Dormition Nicholas Monastery and the Holy Dormition Vasilyevsky Monastery, passed into eternity. Even long before the start of the funeral service, despite the difficult situation in our region, material difficulties, overcoming a difficult path with many obstacles, people flocked to the monastery, driven by a burning love in their hearts for the ever-remembered Father Zosima, in order to prayerfully honor the day of his repose. We rode with gratitude in our hearts, keeping in the memory of Batyushkin fatherly love, his support, help and soul-saving instructions. They went to bring prayerful sighs to the Lord for the repose of the soul of the Father in the village of the righteous, as well as for consolation in the current sorrows and difficulties.

The memorial service began the evening before with a requiem all-night vigil. During the evening service, His Eminence Elisha, Metropolitan of Izyum and Kupyansky, and His Eminence Barnabas, Archbishop of Makeevsky, arrived at the monastery to offer prayers for the repose of the ever-remembered elder together with the inhabitants and pilgrims of the monastery. Parastas, who served as a bishopric, was headed by Archbishop Barnabas. At the end of the parastas, in his sermon, Vladyka spoke about the feat of life of Father Zosima, about the fruit of his earthly life - the dispensation of the women's and men's cloisters with the House of Mercy: “The leaven, which was laid by Father Zosima, is still valid today. Despite temptations, turmoil, this ship sails - souls are saved. This abode is like an image of a spiritual ship to the deserts of the world, and here, to this day, works of mercy are performed and prayers are raised.”

To the 15th Anniversary of the Blessed Death of Schema-Archimandrite Zosima

The main topic of this year, which stirred up public consciousness and aroused great interest, is the century of tragic events that, without exaggeration, became a turning point both in the modern history of our country and in the entire European history of the past 20th century.

As part of the Christmas Readings, the Russian Orthodox Church proposed the dialogue “1917 – 2017: Lessons of the Century”. One of the main consequences as a result of the events of a century ago was an open persecution against the Church: a large-scale seizure of church property, the closure of monasteries, executions and repressions. As a result, over the next 70 years, only a few monasteries functioned on the territory of the Soviet Union, before the revolution there were 800 of them.

In this regard, today we often hear about the "interrupted monastic tradition." At one of the monastic conferences in Moscow, Schema-Archimandrite Gabriel (Bunge), the theologian and hermit monk, who for many years has been leading the life of a strict recluse in a mountain monastery on the border of Switzerland and Italy, made an interesting report on this topic. It was called “Our predecessors are in good. Modern Russian monasticism between the break and the inseparability of tradition. As a result of his deep and thorough analysis, he concluded that despite the fact that outwardly the institution of monasticism was practically destroyed, there always remained such “icons” - the elders who in their lives embodied the ideal of a true monk. The experience of their life deserves the same attention as the experience of the saints of the first centuries, because the “bearers of the Spirit”, they kept burning the “torch of monastic life” and, guided by grace, prepared in the hearts of believers an amazing revival of the Orthodox Church and monasticism after the fall of the communist regime.

Notes about the Orthodox camp

For ten years in a row, every summer in the Holy Assumption Nikolo-Vasilevsky monastery in the village of Nikolskoye, a day camp for children has been organized. And, with God's help, another “shift” took place again this year within the walls of the holy monastery! From June 5 to June 24, 35 children lived a special, amazing life, studying in a day camp at the Sunday school of the monastery!

Through the efforts of Mother Superior, brothers and sisters of the monastery, the days in the camp this year were especially interesting, eventful and exciting! In addition to the lessons of the Law of God, hiking, games, entertaining quests, sports relay races, classes were held with children in acting, music, stage speech, chess, as well as various master classes (on decoupage, making decorative candles, soft toys, winding dolls , artificial flowers, quilling, ribbon embroidery). Everyone was busy with one common cause - the business of building the temple of their soul! And we built it like this: for each good deed, the child received a small brick (of course, symbolic). For example, one could receive a brick for diligence and patience in work, for activity in a conversation or game, for helping elders or classmates, for showing mercy, for a responsible attitude to a task, for sacrifice and dedication. Earned bricks went to the construction of the temple. And we illustrated the construction of this temple with the help of the joint daily picking up of a puzzle with the image of St. Basil's Cathedral.

Sermon on Easter Eve

So the first day of Holy Pascha flew by, by the grace of God, we ended the Paschal service with the celebration of Vespers. According to the liturgical charter, the second day of Easter is coming - Bright Monday.

In the Gospel at Vespers we read how the Lord appeared to His disciples, "through a closed door." For two thousand years, year after year, these events are remembered, as in the Zion Upper Room, the doors and windows of which were closed "for the sake of the Jews," Christ appeared, stood in the midst of the disciples and said: "Peace be with you." The first word after the Resurrection was “Rejoice,” we read on Holy Saturday. The Lord gives joy to everyone. And the second word of the Resurrected - "Peace be with you" - the teaching of the world.

This is what I wish you all on the days of Holy Pascha, so that we live in peace, do not quarrel, so that we leave the temple with peace. “We will leave in peace,” the priest says at the end of the liturgy. So that we go into the world in peace, we live in peace for the glory of God, we carry the burdens of our family cross with the world, we carry our life cross with the world, and with the world, thank God for everything, so that we leave this life for eternity, to the Kingdom of Heaven. May the peace of God, the peace of Christ, always accompany us all in our daily lives. Here are my good bright Paschal wishes for today's holy Easter evening. Calm down, calm down. The elders of Optina said: "You must acquire peace in your heart." But I always emphasize - not indifference to everything, detachment, as some have false humility. Detachment from everything is a sinful feeling. And to acquire peace in the heart, and to be a joyful, bright person - this is already a feat, we should pray for this, for the peaceful state of our hearts. So that the peace of God, the peace of the Risen Lord, will always accompany us in later life.

Sermon on Great Wednesday Evening

My beloved flock, by the grace of God, the first half of Passion Week has ended, and we have directly entered the days of the Divine Passion of Christ. Mournful hymns are heard mourning the moment when Judas the traitor has matured and goes to betray his Divine Teacher. He confers with the Jewish assembly: “What do you want to give me, and I will betray Him to you?” Everyone consulted and appreciated: "Thirty pieces of silver." As once the brothers betrayed the righteous Joseph for thirty pieces of silver, so Judas betrayed the Savior for thirty of these pieces of silver, for he was a thief, that is, a thief. He loved money very much, he constantly went everywhere with a cash box. But the Jewish Sanhedrin was afraid of the people. At night, secretly it was necessary to commit a vile deed - to take the Savior into custody and condemn Him to death.

In the morning of this day, we joyfully testified about a sinful woman, a harlot who repented and forgiven by God, in the evening we mourn for the death of Judas. The Holy Fathers reasoned that it was not betrayal that finally ruined Judas. If after the Resurrection he fell on his knees before Christ and asked for forgiveness, the Lord would have forgiven him, seeing his sincere repentance, for God's mercy is boundless. Desperation killed him. Judas realized what he had done when he saw the Savior bound hand and foot (as He is depicted in an ancient image), condemned, beaten and spat upon. Desperate: "What have I done!" He did not have the spiritual strength to repent, to fall at the feet of Christ with the words: “Lord, forgive me!” He went and strangled himself.

Sermon on Maundy Monday

By the grace of God, by the conclusion of today's divine service, we have entered the great holy days of the saving Divine Passion Week. The solemn Palm Sunday has ended, and we hear wonderful words: "The Lord is coming on our free passion for the sake of salvation."

On Maundy Monday, the Church commemorates Righteous Joseph the Handsome from the Old Testament, one of the twelve sons of Patriarch Jacob. He defeated the enemy with his innocent suffering, his patience. He was a prototype of Christ the Savior who suffers innocently for all of us, which is why the Church remembers him first at Holy Week.

The righteous Old Testament patriarch Jacob had twelve sons. The sons were engaged in cattle breeding, grazed the father's herds. And under Jacob was the youngest son, the young man Joseph, the most beloved. He never left his father's house, being a great consolation to him in his extreme old age. Patriarch Jacob loved his youngest son very much and was afraid to let him go. At the same time, Joseph had a special destiny of God. He had special dreams that alarmed everyone living in the house: sometimes eleven stars in the sky worshiped him, then the moon and the sun, then the ears of corn worshiped him. Secret envy in the brothers matured towards Joseph. They said, “So what? We will bow to you - father and mother and your brothers?

Sermon on the Memorial Day of the Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Saints

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, with the holy festive Great Lenten Sunday! How many posts have passed? Week? Two weeks already? And I thought it was only a week. So it's been two weeks since the post. Tired? Shall we fast or break the fast? Fast? Or maybe break the fast? "White manure" to eat, milk, sour cream? We will not? Let's fast! Children say: “Let's fast. But we won’t refuse chocolate candy. ”

By the grace of God, two weeks have already passed the holy Great Lent, flew by unnoticed. And for this lenten time of grace, we thank the Lord for the fact that the Lord, despite our weaknesses, various temptations, helps us, strengthens us. We pray, carry out the feat of daily service, we fight our infirmities, we overcome difficulties, we fast, and we hope that the Lord will accept our feat in the Kingdom of Heaven. With this spiritual gracious hope we spend the fasting time. And, Lord, may we all continue to fast.

This week, the third already, the Church will prepare us for the meeting with the Cross of the Lord. Next Sunday is Holy Cross. We will solemnly carry out the holy Cypress Cross, worship it and sing: “We worship Your Cross, Master, and glorify Your holy Resurrection.” The Holy Cross will give us the spiritual support of the Church, so that we can meet the middle part of the fast under the shadow of the Cross, peacefully end the holy fast and wait for Easter, the Bright Resurrection of Christ!

From the sermon of Schema-Archimandrite Zosima on the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee.

Preparatory weeks from today began for the holy Great Lent. By the grace of God, from yesterday evening we began to sing a particularly sophisticated book, in which many hymns were composed by St. Andrew of Crete - the Lenten Triodion, which contains all the services of God of Holy Forty Days, Great Lent and the weeks of preparation for Holy Lent, and the services of Holy Passion Week, Divine Passion of Christ. And, God forbid, that we, having begun this book today, turning over the first leaf of it, could, with the help of God, calmly serve it all together, read it, receive spiritual compunction, fulfill all the services of God, joyfully meet the holy coming Great Lent, with joyfully go through the field of the Holy Fast, overcome your infirmities, overcome your passions and all your shortcomings, wait for the Divine Passion of Christ, and bow to the Bright Resurrection of Christ!

Assumption 2002

My beloved flock, I greet you on a holy holiday! A highly solemn holiday is the day of the Dormition, the day of the end of the earthly journey of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the day of Her relocation from earth to heaven, as we sing in sacred hymns.

The Lord vouchsafed this year also by the grace of God to end this holy year, for the feast of the Assumption ends the church year, and from the first of September begins a new church year of God's mercy, a new circle of church holidays, the first of which is the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God, and then all the holidays go on. Lord's and Mother of God even before the feast of the Assumption. It is not death, but the Assumption - the sleeping Virgin Mary. In front of us is a wonderful Shroud of the Mother of God, where on her deathbed the Most Holy Virgin Mary is symbolically depicted, surrounded by the holy apostles, and Her Son, the Savior, Jesus Christ, who descended from heaven, took His Mother’s soul in His hand, as we are told in the akathist to the Assumption of God Mothers. Almost 2000 years ago it happened in Jerusalem, a lot of time has passed since then, but the memory of this event is sacred. Holy Gethsemane in Jerusalem keeps the place, the cave, where the Queen of Heaven was buried. The holy city of Jerusalem sacredly preserves all those places that were associated with the life of the Savior and the Blessed Virgin Mary. And on the tomb of the Mother of God stands our Russian icon of the Assumption, all in gold, the miraculous icon of the holy Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.

Sermon by Schema-Archimandrite Zosima on the Sunday of All Saints

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, on this Sunday holiday!

By the grace of God, we celebrated Great Lent, we celebrated Easter, we celebrated the bright feast of Pentecost - the feast of the Holy Trinity, yesterday we made a tribute, seeing off this holiday. And today, as it were, the result of the entire history of the Orthodox Church, overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, is the Cathedral of All Saints, who have pleased God from the beginning, a worldwide holiday of triumph. The whole world today celebrates the patronal day of All the saints of God, starting from the Angels, Archangels, Cherubim, Seraphim, Dominions, Thrones, Beginnings, Authorities - from the Heavenly host, starting and ending with the earthly angels in the flesh, who pleased God and became equal to the Angels. Here are our great forefathers Adam and Eve, our forefathers, the great righteous Noah, Enoch and others. The great prophets, the Old Testament patriarchs, who lived by faith in the coming Savior, were saved, and at the Coming of Christ became heirs of the Kingdom of Heaven, became equal to the Angels. Righteous Job the Long-suffering, righteous Joseph the Beautiful and other Old Testament righteous, Simeon the God-bearer, John the Baptist, who have already stood on the border of the Old and New Testaments.

December 29 / January 11 - the memory of the holy martyrs 14,000 babies, beaten by Herod in Bethlehem

"Angelic army of the Lord." Icon from the Cave of the Bethlehem Infants. Church of the Nativity. Bethlehem

Kontakion, tone 6

I am born in Bethlehem as a King, the wolves from Persia come with gifts, / instructed by a star from above, / but Herod is embarrassed and reaps babies like wheat, / and weeps to himself, / as if his power will soon be ruined.

Ying kontakion, tone 4

The star of the magi sent to the One who was born, / and Herod the unrighteous army sent fiercely, / kill me in the manger like a lying baby.

Troparion, tone 1

Through the illnesses of the saints, having suffered in the image of You, / beg, O Lord, / and heal all our illnesses, / Lover of mankind, we pray.

Holy Martyrs 14,000 infants were killed by King Herod in Bethlehem. When the time came for the greatest event to take place - the Incarnation of the Son of God and His Birth from the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Eastern Magi saw a new star in the sky, foreshadowing the birth of the King of the Jews. Immediately they went to Jerusalem to worship the Born, and the star showed them the way. Having bowed to the Divine Infant, they did not return to Jerusalem to Herod, as he ordered them, but, having received a revelation from above, they left for their country in a different way. Then Herod realized that his plan to find the Baby was not realized, and ordered to kill in Bethlehem and the surrounding area all male children from two years old and younger. He expected that among the killed children there would be the Divine Infant, in whom he saw a rival. The lost babies became the first martyrs for Christ. The wrath of Herod fell upon Simeon the God-bearer, who publicly testified in the temple about the Born Messiah. When the holy elder died, Herod did not allow him to be buried with dignity. By order of the king, the holy prophet, priest Zechariah, was killed: he was killed in the Jerusalem temple between the altar and the altar because he did not indicate where his son, John, the future Baptist of the Lord Jesus Christ. The wrath of God soon punished Herod himself: a severe illness overtook him, and he died, eaten alive by worms. Before his death, the impious king completed the measure of his atrocities: he killed the chief priests and scribes of the Jews, his brother, sister and her husband, his wife Mariamne and three sons, as well as 70 wisest men, members of the Sanhedrin.

Sermon on the week of Christmas

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, on holy Sunday and the feast of the Nativity of Christ! By the grace of God, today is Christmas Day. A special day on which we remember the relatives in the flesh of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Elder Joseph, who was betrothed to the Virgin Mary, was entrusted with keeping Her virginity, and who witnessed the Nativity of Christ the Savior. He cared, as they read today in the akathist, about the carnal needs of Christ the Savior, in childhood and adolescence he supported Him. The holy righteous Joseph was a witness of great mysteries - Divine revelations about Christ the Savior, and he composed everything in his heart, marveling at the past.

King David, for “out of the line of David shall salvation shine,” the Scripture said. "From the root of David" came Christ the Savior. Last Sunday we read in the Gospel the genealogy of the Savior from David to the righteous Joseph the Betrothed.

And we honor the holy Apostle James, the brother of the Lord, the first bishop of the Church of Jerusalem. He was the son of Joseph from his first marriage, brought up, communicated with the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ.

Sermon of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill on the Sunday of the Holy Fathers

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The Nativity Fast, which is now coming to an end, draws our attention to the spiritual feat of people who lived before Christ the Savior. Most of the feasts dedicated to the Old Testament prophets fall on the time of the Nativity Fast. And worship services in honor of the Old Testament prophets help us understand the meaning and significance of the ministry they performed.

The last two Sundays before the Nativity of Christ, called in the language of the Church Charter the Week of the Forefathers and the Week of the Father, are dedicated to all the Old Testament saints of God who kept the promise of the coming of the Savior into the world. They were faithful to this promise, despite the most difficult circumstances of their life from a spiritual point of view.

Sermon by Metropolitan Anthony of Surozh on December 31, 1967

The Lord gave us one more year of our life to live to the end, and we entered this New Year proclaiming our faith not only in God in general, but also in the fact that we believe in the Kingdom of God that should come - first in an inconspicuous way in our souls, and then, through us, and in a noticeable, glorious, victorious way - for the whole world.

The first words of the prayer we just sang are "Blessed be the Kingdom of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." We enter this year with the faith that it can belong to the Kingdom of the Lord. What does it mean? As we look back on the past, the prayers we have just read, sung, listened to speak to us of repentance and thanksgiving. About repentance, because during the past years and the past year we all, each of us turned out to be unworthy of the name of a person, the name of a Christian, God's love and the love of people. We have something to repent of, because our life during this year hardly always, hardly often contributed to the establishment of the Kingdom of God, the Kingdom of exultant, inseparable, purest love. We need to repent, because of all people we, Christians, are called to be God's co-workers so that His ways become the ways of men.

CHRISTMAS MIRACLE IN ADVANCE, OR ORTHODOX NEW YEAR (Natalia Klimova)

Varya dreamed. She had such a small weakness. But, we must give her her due, - everything that she mentally imagined was quite feasible. She did not at all want a luxurious life, expensive outfits, travel to exotic countries. No no! She would have simple female happiness: for her husband to share her faith ... The Potapov family lived well. By worldly standards, one might even say, she lived beautifully. Husband, Andrey, earns well, has no bad habits, does not have a soul in his wife. Six-year-old daughter Dasha is growing up healthy, smart and obedient. So what else does Varvara lack for complete happiness?!

It just so happened that literally a year ago Varya agreed to go on an excursion with her friend to a monastery located not far from the city. And then something happened to her. Unusual silence and peace entered the woman's heart and did not want to leave it. Now Barbara could not live without a temple. At first, she simply came once a week, when there were no services, and quietly sat in a corner - she came to her senses from the now hated city bustle. Then I bought several pamphlets and began to slowly become churched ...

Sermon on the Entry into the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, with the great annual holiday of joy and triumph - the Entry into the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary! A holiday when the aged parents, the righteous Fathers of God Joachim and Anna fulfilled their promise. For they, being barren and aged, did not expect to give birth to a child, but promised that if God would give them a conception, a birth, they would consecrate this child to God. And they faithfully fulfilled their vow when they brought the three-year-old maiden, the girl Mary, to the temple of Jerusalem. Dedication Celebration! All the girlfriends of the Virgin Mary gathered, the girls around gathered, all with lit candles. With the singing of psalms, the solemn procession came to the temple of Jerusalem. And at that time, an elderly elder, the high priest Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, served, performed the sacred service in the temple. And he, moved by the Spirit of God, led the girl Mary into the Most Holy of Holies, where the priest entered only once a year, according to church custom. And everyone was amazed and surprised at this extraordinary event.

The Virgin Mary remained at the temple of Jerusalem to be brought up. For at the temple there were separate rooms where boys dedicated to God were brought up, future servants of the temple were prepared. And the girls in the other half were brought up, also future servants of the house of God, the temple of God. They were taught to read and write, brought up the fear of God, they studied the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament, prophetic books. The girls learned needlework, singing and everything that was necessary for the spiritual life.

Sermon on the Day of Commemoration of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew Beginning of the Nativity Fast

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, on this holy festive Sunday afternoon and with the beginning of the holy Christmas fast!

How long before Christmas? Thirty-eight days, smart women say. So there is very little left before the holy Christmas night.

By the grace of God, and on this Sunday, the Lord has gathered us under the vaults of this sacred temple for common prayer, for our spiritual communion and spiritual renewal. And the Lord vouchsafed the priests at the throne of God to celebrate the Holy Divine Liturgy in a conciliar way, and we - to pray quietly, peacefully in the temple on this holy Sunday.

The Gospel of the Merciful Samaritan was read to us by Father Deacon at the Divine Liturgy: "Go and do the same." The Lord calls us all to mercy, not to empty words, but to deeds. The Samaritan did not hesitate whether to help the Jew or not. He rendered it without hesitation, despite the fact that the enmity was hateful between the Samaritans and the Jews. He bandaged all his wounds, put him on his cattle, walked along with the donkey himself, brought him to the hotel, served him all night, fed him, bandaged his wounds. In the morning, going further, he gives his last money to the owner of the hotel: “Take it, feed him, treat him until he gets up. If you spend something superfluous, I, returning, will repay you my debt. This is today's gospel edification: do not do good for the sake of profit, not for the sake of human glory, but for the glory of God.

It is now very fashionable for us to do good deeds, but alas, not for the sake of God, not for the sake of God's meekness and mercy, but for the sake of human glory: I am a benefactor, I help! Therefore, from this help there is only emptiness.

SERMON SCHIARCHIM. ZOSIMUS ON THE FESTIVAL OF THE OZERYANSKIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, on this holy holiday Sunday! By the grace of God, the Lord again vouchsafed us to gather together under the vaults of this sacred temple to celebrate the holy Divine Liturgy. Today the Lord has made it worthy to pray at the foot of the Icon of the Mother of God of Ozeryanskaya, the patroness of the Kharkiv region, the patroness of our southern region, the Donbass, the land of our Russian patroness. Pray, ask Her for help for all of us, intercession, support, prayer and protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Lord has strengthened us to celebrate the Divine Liturgy today at the Throne of God, and He has strengthened you all to pray on today's holy, grace-filled day of the Resurrection, Little Pascha. Any Sunday is always the day of the Lord, the day of little Easter, we sing the Resurrection of Christ, we glorify the Savior who has risen from the dead.

And on today's holy day, the Lord has vouchsafed you all in this temple to pray for the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of God's holy churches, for the salvation of all of us, for our families at the Divine Liturgy. We prayed for all the lost in the world - “let us pray for the faithful for the catechumens”, that is, for those who have not yet been baptized, but they will come to God through our prayers in time. They prayed for them, that the Lord would have mercy on them, pronounce them with the word of truth, open the Gospel of truth to them. Thus we prayed for an unenlightened world. What a deep and wondrous litany this is on the eve of the Cherubic Hymn, and how we must pray with concentration at this moment, especially for the unenlightened. Whoever has unbaptized relatives, who has those who have not yet come to God, it is at this moment that you need to pray for their conversion, who have gone astray, to the Holy Orthodox Church.

September 14-27 World Exaltation of the Holy Life-Giving Cross of the Lord

From the sermon of Schema-Archimandrite Zosima on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 27, 1999

My beloved flock, I greet you all on the highly solemn feast of the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord!

Thank God that the Lord has gathered us all at the foot of His Cross. The Lord gave us all a weapon against the devil - the holy cross. The holy cross accompanies us all from the day of our holy baptism, when the priest, having baptized us as babies, put it on us with his hand, saying the words: “The Lord said: if anyone wants to follow me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow It is coming for me” (Matt. 16:24; 10:38; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23; 14:27).

And this holy cross accompanies us all throughout our lives: both at night and during the day, on land and on the waters, and on a journey, and in sorrow, and in joy - our weapon, the holy cross, is always with us. The cross depicts the Savior who died for us all; on the reverse side of the cross, the holy sacramental words are engraved: save and save - from all troubles, from all misfortunes, from all misfortunes, from all envious and haters, from all enemies, visible and invisible, save and save us, Lord. And, having a cross on ourselves, let us not be afraid of any evil spirits, we are not afraid of anything evil - the Lord conquers everything. And I often say the words to you: nothing is scary with God. And give us, Lord, such a deep, pure faith, so that nothing is terrible for us. The holy cross is on me - well, what kind of evil spirits can cling to me: even sprinkle me from head to toe with salt or earth, or pour me over, and even “if a mortal man drinks, he will not harm him” (Mark 16:18; Lk. 10 :19). That's what pure, deep faith should be. And grant, Lord, that we all have this faith pure, deep, and may the holy cross accompany us all our lives. And our ashes, when they betray the earth, may the holy cross overshadow, may it sanctify us, who are awaiting the general resurrection from the dead. When for the last time the whole world sees the cross - the sign of the Son of Man - the fiery cross will appear in heaven, announcing the end of the world, announcing the coming Savior-Judge, announcing the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it will never end, as we sing in the holy Creed for the glory of God...

Unfortunately, the further text of this sermon by Father Zosima has not been preserved. In an attempt to at least partially fill this gap, we bring to the reader's attention excerpts from other sermons containing the elder's thoughts about the holy cross.

September 8/21 - Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary

Troparion, tone 4

Thy Nativity, O Virgin Mother of God, / to proclaim joy to the whole universe: / from Thee has risen the Sun of Truth, Christ our God, / and, having broken the oath, gave a blessing, / and, having abolished death, has given us eternal life.

Kontakion, tone 4

Joachim and Anna of the reproach of childlessness / and Adam and Eve are freed from mortal aphids, Most Pure, / in Your holy birth. / That is what Your people are celebrating, / the guilt of transgressions has been delivered, / sometimes call Thee: / barren fruits gives birth to the Mother of God and the Nourisher of our Life.

We solemnly celebrate, dear brothers and sisters, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary from barren parents, pious Joachim and Anna. From the first centuries of the Christian faith, the Holy Church established this holiday. The celebrated event - the birth of the God-chosen Maiden - brought joy to the whole world, for the God-man Christ Jesus, who shone from Her, broke the curse of God that weighed on the criminal and accursed human race and brought down on him the blessing of God, and, having corrected universal death, gave people eternal life. This is how the Holy Church explains the cause of true joy.

The righteous parents of the Ever-Virgin mourned for a long time about their infertility, long and fervently prayed to the Lord for the resolution of infertility, which was considered a punishment from God for sins; they did a lot of alms to bend to the mercy of the All-Merciful, and endured insults from fellow tribesmen. And in this sorrow and unceasing prayer and doing good, they were gradually cleansed in spirit and inflamed more and more with love and devotion to God, and thus were prepared by the Providence of God for the blessed birth of the Most Blessed Daughter, chosen from all generations to be the Mother of the incarnate Word.

September 1 (14) is the first day of the Indict. Church New Year

To the Creator of all creatures, / setting times and years in Your power, / bless the crown of the summer of Your goodness, O Lord, / preserving people and Your city in the world, / with the prayers of the Mother of God and save us. (troparion indicta)

Friday, September 14, in all Orthodox church calendars is marked as the beginning of the indiction - the Church New Year.

Again and again the Holy Church calls us to enter into the yearly circle of sacred remembrances, where the Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition are preserved in all their depth and fullness.

A new liturgical circle of the main, twelve church holidays begins with the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, which is celebrated on the seventh day after the Church New Year, September 21. The liturgical year begins. It was the Most Holy Theotokos who was the Door through which God entered our lives. The Feast of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos, on August 28, ended the yearly circle of services.

The New Year is the most inconspicuous Orthodox holiday, which in the church calendar is called the beginning of the indiction. Unfortunately, we do not know very well when our Orthodox church year begins and why is it so named?

August 28 (15) - THE DORMITION OF OUR Blessed Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. PATRONAL DAY OF THE CONVENIENCE

The last sermon of Schema-Archimandrite Zosima.

My beloved flock, I greet you on a holy holiday! A highly solemn holiday - the day of the Dormition, the day of the end of the earthly journey of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the day of Her relocation from earth to Heaven, as we sing in sacred hymns.

The Lord deigned to end this holy year with His mercy, for the church year ends with the feast of the Dormition, and from the first of September a new church year of God's mercy begins, a new circle of church holidays, the first of which is the feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God, and then all the Lord's and Mother of God feasts go on, even until Feast of the Assumption. It is not death, but the Assumption - the sleeping Virgin Mary. Before us is a wonderful Shroud of the Mother of God, where on her deathbed the Most Holy Virgin Mary is symbolically depicted, surrounded by the holy Apostles, and Her Son the Savior Jesus Christ, descended from heaven, took His Mother’s soul in His hand, as it says in the akathist to the Dormition. Almost two thousand years ago it happened in Jerusalem, a lot of time has passed since then, but the memory of this event is sacred.

August 23 (10) - Memorial Day of St. Lawrence of Chernigov

From the sermon of the schiarchim. Zosima on Sunday 08/23/98

... Life is interesting. I already want to go out for a sermon, I'm still standing in the Altar, listening. These are the wonderful old men of our twentieth century, pure, bright, kind. And now the brethren were talking in the altar, the people understood that, not to these fat-bellies, but in silk cassocks, and diamonds, they went, but to this lame old man, who could not really serve because of his weakness, he only sang wonderfully and praised the Lord. And this lame, miserable old man instructed thousands of people with his simplicity, his unselfish love. And the people always feel, the people will never be deceived, where is love, and where is falsehood, hypocrisy, duplicity. And Holy Russia loved the Monk Lawrence. Not only during his lifetime, hundreds of people strove to get to him, but especially after his death he became dear to everyone, for his relics were healing, and people just came to the grave to cry, people came to receive grace-filled consolation, and they received it. And in our time, the Lord showed a miracle - the Reverend Elder Lavrenty glorified in the face of the holy saints of God. Found in Chernigov, in the basement of the Cathedral, its imperishable holy relics, fragrant. How much blessed joy, how many miracles were from his holy relics. The relics were solemnly washed, dressed in a new great holy schema and laid in the Cathedral. And not only the land of Chernigov, and the city of Chernigov, but the whole Russian land glorifies the wondrous old man.

In our troubled times, his consolation, with which he consoles us, is especially significant. Instead of the schismatics now sowing confusion in our hearts: “The end will come to you, Muscovites, we will win, and everything else.” And Elder Lavrenty consoles us: “It’s not true! God will always win, in any place, and not some evil spirits retreated. And about the current state, about this false patriarch of all Ukraine, the former Filaret, the elder spoke clearly: “So he will rise against the Church, backslide from God, that the whole world will be amazed at his audacity.” Indeed, the whole world is amazed at Filaret's audacity. All the Patriarchs of the East are surprised, but where did such an impudent stinking dog come from that barks at the whole Church? And you have to be patient. And the old man said, consoling: “Do not be afraid! Let us stand for unity and for faith, and evil will recede - the Church will be preserved as a single Russian Orthodox Church. This is the consolation that Elder Lavrenty gives us in our mournful days of schism and division. For this senile consolation of his, we are grateful to him. And when it is so sad in our souls, let us remember that Elder Lavrenty comforted us, said that we would be preserved in unity, we would endure, despite this evil and artificial division, the Church would be preserved - the one holy Orthodox Church. For this mercy and for this love of the Elder Rev. Lawrence, we thank the Lord!

And today the Liturgy was celebrated, on the throne lay the holy relics of the Monk Elder Lawrence. And on his incorruptible relics, a part of his incorruptible body, we performed the holy Divine Liturgy in our church. He is dear not only to the city of Chernigov, but also to the whole land of our holy Russian. A wonderful service was composed for him, an akathist was composed, and we pray and magnify. Until recently, we sang eternal memory to him: “God rest with the Saints ...”, and today we already sing solemnly: “We bless you, Reverend Father Lawrence, and honor your holy memory, mentor of monks and companion of angels.”

There are great celebrations today in Chernigov, an aged elder, Metropolitan Anthony, is performing the service of God, although he has already become weak, but his spirit is strong. The Lord also sent him a vicar bishop, Ambrose - from the Kharkov priests they appointed him an assistant in his senile archpastoral labors. The land of Chernihiv is famous. The Chernigov school is famous, where young men and women receive a spiritual education, learn to serve in the church, to lead the choir, and under the guidance of Elder Lavrenty, the great choir director, a wonderful connoisseur of spiritual singing, the science of music is easily given to those who study it, and excellent choir directors come out. And our regent, too, studied under the protection of the Reverend Elder Lawrence in Chernigov, and now the monastery church is resounding with singing. So, thank God that the Lord in our difficult times shows mercy, shows wonderful elders, shows new saints of God, illuminated by the light of Tabor glory. They shine even after death and give us all consolation. And all of us, as soon as we hear the name of the Monk Lawrence, we baptize our foreheads at once. Lord, this is a great old man! Comfort us unfortunate in our earthly life! And we pray before his holy image that he would give us consolation, support for our weak human nature. And so that we, with meekness and love, carry our life's cross, thanking God for everything, as the Monk Elder Lavrenty thanked God.

On today's holy Sunday, we have gathered in our holy temple of God for our common Christian prayer. Resurrection is a small Easter, a luminous day when we remember the Resurrection of Christ from the dead. And we sing a solemn song: “Having seen the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy Lord Jesus!” This joy of the Resurrection accompanies us every week, and every week, every Sunday, we strive to sing in the temple of God the bright Resurrection of Christ, to celebrate little Pascha, to celebrate the Lord's day, to pray with all our soul in the temple of God. And it becomes easy, and problems go away, they are resolved peacefully, and families are pacified, and we easily endure the temptations that befall us, because with God everything is easy in life. And without God there is darkness, heaviness, despair, despondency, and so on. So, enlighten us, Lord, that we should live with God, always honor the Lord's Resurrection day. Leave all the fuss! Anyway, the devil tells us endlessly: bazaars, shops, vanity, laundry. Let's hustle, hustle! But what about us? Six days must bustle: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Who should give the seventh holy day? (voices in the temple - to God) Lord God! And we will succeed if we give to God, and the peaceful week will pass with God's blessing, and all our fuss will be resolved, and shops and bazaars will not go anywhere from us. We will be with God. How our grandfathers-great-grandfathers honored the Lord's Day of Resurrection. In the evening the bell struck in the Church for the All-Night Vigil, unharnessed his oxen, washed himself and crouched rather where? - Pray to God in church. And they reaped by hand, and plowed, and sowed, and cleaned, and managed, and produced children by ten by three. And everything was fine and all right, and there were pious families, and there were normal wives, and there were normal husbands, because they lived with God. The Lord's Day has always been celebrated sacredly. And enlighten us, Lord, so that this mammon does not endlessly swallow us up, this endless vanity, this swamp that sucks us in. The day of the Lord has come - on Monday we will do everything. Everything! Honored, prayed, managed, everything will be fine. Vanity will run away from us? Wait until Monday, you will already work with new spiritual and physical strength on Monday. And what you are going to do on Sunday, and it will not work, there will be no success. And God willing, the week will begin, and everything will be fine, it will be peaceful. Like this. We always honor the Lord's Day!

August 6 (19) TRANSFORMATION OF THE LORD GOD AND Savior OUR JESUS CHRIST

40 days before He was put to a shameful death for our sins, the Lord revealed to His three disciples the glory of His Divinity. “And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up to a high mountain alone, and was transfigured before them: and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light” (Matt. 17, 1-2). This is the event that the Lord had in mind when He said: “There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of man coming in His kingdom” (Matthew 16:28). Thus, the faith of the disciples was strengthened and prepared for the trial of the coming suffering and death of the Savior; and they could see in them not only human suffering, but the completely free passion of the Son of God. The disciples also saw Moses and Elijah talking with the Lord, and then they realized that He Himself was not Elijah or one of the prophets, but someone much higher: Who could call the law and the prophets to be His witnesses, because. He was the fulfillment of both.

Sermon by the schiarch. Zosimas for the Transfiguration of the Lord (08/23/98)

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, with the great annual feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the glory of the Lord, the Tabor Light, which shone the Lord in night prayer on Mount Tabor! And the Lord calls us: strive for the Light. So that we all go away from the darkness of sin, from our passions, from vices, go away, and strive for the Light of the non-evening, the Light of the uncreated, the Light of Tabor! In the middle of the night, the Light shone on the Savior, by this He showed that this Light should shine on us too - the Light of Christ enlightens everyone! Mount Tabor is the great mountain of Palestine, on which the Lord prayed in night prayer and on which He was transfigured in Glory. Last night I told you that on the eve of His suffering, the Lord revealed His glory to strengthen the faith of the apostles. Two great prophets appeared to him during prayer - Moses the legislator and Elijah the zealot of the true faith, and the glorious Forerunner of the second coming of Christ. They appeared together, talking with the Savior about His last days, about what should happen in Jerusalem, about suffering, about death and about His glorious Resurrection. Triumph, joy - Christ shining in the darkness of the night, prophets talking with Him, a cloud , enveloping them - the apostles in delight and horror look at this wonderful, inexplicable vision, only one delight: “It is good for us to be here! Let us create three tents (tents) to live in them always, in this Glory of God.” And suddenly a thunderous voice from Heaven: “This is My beloved Son, I am well pleased with Him, listen to Him.” And last night I spoke to you briefly about this holy obedience to God and the Church. That we are not some kind of workers in life, but holy novices. Especially in the Church of God we carry holy obedience, beginning with the Apostles. Patriarch, Bishops, priests, deacons, laity, cleaners, prosphora makers, janitors - we all bear holy obedience to God and the Mother Church. We work for the Lord, for the salvation of our souls. “Listen to him” - we listen to God, we listen to the hierarchy, and we fulfill their will, as the Will of God. Mount Tabor is a particularly fertile place. It is always covered with some special grace of the inexplicable Light. And today, the Greek clergy, and our Russian pilgrims, and other faiths ascend to Mount Tabor - everyone goes to sing the glory of the Transfiguration, the glory of the Light of Tabor - “Thou hast been transfigured on the mountain, Christ our God!”! As I already told you, what an exciting troparion, we are all familiar with it from childhood, when everyone is walking in the procession, and the singers solemnly sing: “Thou hast been transfigured on the mountain, Christ God.” A priest in a white vestment consecrates apples, grapes, and water. Joy, celebration! The Savior, by the grace of God, has come. And this joy of triumph both in the city of Jerusalem and on Athos, there is a special great celebration there today. The top of Mount Athos is crowned with a stone church of the Transfiguration of the Lord. How the monks brought bricks and stones there, this already remains a mystery, incomprehensible to the mind. The sheer cliffs of the top of Mount Athos are crowned by a stone temple. Once a year, only there is the service of God performed on the feast of the Transfiguration. From all corners, from all monasteries, sketes, monks hurry with the blessing of the elders, so that there, in the clouds, sing the glory of God. The top of Mount Athos is always covered by a cloud, there has never been such a moment that it was visible, it is always hidden, as in a halo. Young novices and gray-haired elders climb there along ladder ropes, along sheer cliffs, to pray there on this day. And what a spiritual delight, when among the clouds on the top of Mount Athos they sing the courageous tune “Thou hast been transfigured on the mountain, Christ our God.” One eyewitness described to me his inexplicable delight, indeed some kind of glory, all the faces of the singing and praying monks brighten, the transformation is taking place. Such love, such kindness appears in everyone, while still on earth, from the glory of the heavenly holy Mount Athos. This great celebration is taking place today. And today, from all corners of Mount Athos, monks have gathered there to sing among the clouds, in the likeness of Mount Tabor, the glory of the Transfiguration of the Lord. And they pray that the glory of the Light of Tabor would shine upon them and the whole earth. In Russia they also loved the feast of the Transfiguration very much, and in honor of this event they built churches of God. The famous Valaam monastery, the wonderful island of Valaam, and the main cathedral of the monastery were consecrated on the mountain in honor of the glory of the Lord, in honor of the feast of the Transfiguration. The famous Solovetsky Monastery of Zosima and Savvaty - the main cathedral is also consecrated in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. And among the wild nature, among these bad weather, among the constant cold, the monks warm themselves, singing the glory of the Transfiguration of the Lord. And today, both Valaam, and Solovki, and our other monasteries, cities and villages celebrate their patronal day, singing the glory of the Transfiguration of the Lord. In our Donbas, the Holy Mountains are also crowned with the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Tabor Glory. And when the Satanists-Bolsheviks closed the monastery, their first duty was to destroy this temple. The head was cut off from the Holy Mountains. So the Holy Mountains stand to this day, headless for the time being, but the brothers pray and sing the glory of the Light of Tabor, and the Transfiguration of the Lord is celebrated as the Holy Day.

From the sermon of Schema-Archimandrite Zosima on Sunday, August 16, 1998

I greet all of you, my beloved flock, on this holy festive Sunday! Did you pray well? ( voices in the temple - Yes!) What was the gospel about today? Well, tell me. (voices unintelligible) Wait ladies. First, the righteous men. The priests all fell silent in the altar, slept, forgot. So what was the gospel about today? This is how we listen. So what was the gospel about today? (- about demoniac ... healing) Yes, yes, yes, yes, healing who? Bes-but-va-that-go. This is what we found out. This is how we pray, we stand in the church - we visited the bazaar, baked pies and boiled borscht, and they say, they prayed to God in the church. Yes?! This is our kind of prayer that they read, who knows, and did not hear and do not understand. So, doctor, who did you read the Gospel about today? ( doctor - On the healing of the demoniac). Right-a-quite! What was there, tell me, otherwise Seryoga the blacksmith forgot. ( doctor - He was demon-possessed). Well! And what did he do there? ( doctor - The Lord healed him, father).

By the grace of God, and on today's holy Sunday, the Lord vouchsafed us to pray together, as a single spiritual family! We, the priests, the Lord strengthened conciliarly, as a single family, to stand at the throne of God and pray for all of you. And the Lord has strengthened you to lay aside all worldly cares (as we sing in the Cherubic Hymn), and also vouchsafed you to pray on this Sunday in our rural church of God. For this mercy of God, our common prayer in our holy temple, we thank the Lord. And grant, Lord, that we who come to the temple feel here neither as guests nor strangers, but as a single spiritual family, striving for God, striving for salvation, striving for the inheritance of eternal life. That's exactly what we lack now - unity. We are all divided both in life and in the temple, some kind of strangers, incomprehensible to each other. And we have a very hard time in life. And the houses are divided, even the neighbors, and they do not know about each other, who is like, what is how. A person gets sick, we don’t even have a clue what is happening to the person. For a week already, the deceased has been lying, decomposed, and no one in the neighbors even knows about the person. This is a terrible terrible alienation, disunity has been depressing us all lately. That is why we are striving for the common, for the Temple of God, monasteries, cloisters, in order to feel together as a single family. Not this terrible loneliness, selfhood unnecessary to anyone, namely, spiritual unity, so that by the union of love, as we sing on Great Wednesday on Passion, we would be bound, as the Saints Apostles were once bound. And God grant that we all feel like a single spiritual family, a monolith, support for each other! How much we need it, especially in our time, during our loneliness, such despondency, our oppression. Enlighten us, Lord, to be one flock, so that the Lord will be the One Shepherd for us all, to the Glory of God!

Patriarch Kirill: I ask everyone to maintain spiritual unity

“I appeal from here to all of Russia - to Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, to all other countries where Holy Russia lives its spiritual, cultural tradition,” His Holiness Patriarch Kirill addressed in his word in the Assumption Cathedral Moscow Kremlin on the day of memory of St. Peter of Moscow, wonderworker of all Russia.

“I ask everyone to preserve that spiritual unity, the founder of which was the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir, that unity that was guarded by the hierarchs of the Russian Church, including St. Peter. It is no coincidence that the saint gave his whole life in order to preserve this unity. He traveled through the dioceses of devastated Russia, he reconciled the distraught feudal princes, he aroused a feeling of love for the united Fatherland, he tried to reconcile everyone so that Russia would accumulate strength and overthrow the foreign yoke.

“His great feat is an answer to all those who say that there is nothing in common between Russia and Ukraine, that the history of Russia begins almost from the 17th century,” the Patriarch emphasized, “This is an answer to all those who believe that the Church in Ukraine and in Russia they are two different Churches. This is one single Church of Holy Russia, sealed by the exploits of St. Peter, St. Alexis, the great saints of the Kiev Caves, St. Sergius of Radonezh. And we believe that this spiritual unity will preserve all historical Russia from spiritual destruction, from temptations, from new idolatry, from the transgression of God's commandments. It will not allow us to sell our spiritual birthright for lentil soup. We pray to St. Peter that, standing before God, he will incline His mercy to historical Russia - to Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

The Holy Assumption Nikolo-Vasilyevsky Monastery consists of two parts - the Vasilyevsky male and Nikolaevsky female monasteries, located in the same fence and located in the village of Nikolskoye, Volnovakha district, Donetsk region, on the site of the former rural parish in honor of St. Basil the Great. The first mention of St. Basil's parish with. Vasilievka (now the village of Nikolskoye) appears in archival records from 1859. Until 1912, a wooden church stood here. In 1912, at the expense of parishioners and benefactors, a warm stone church was built and consecrated in honor of St. Basil the Great. In 1934, the temple was closed and badly damaged by the atheists, its entire upper part, 9 domes and the bell tower were demolished, the faience iconostasis of unique work was completely destroyed. In 1954, the Vasilyevsky temple was restored in its current form with one dome and a bell tower, and has not been closed since then. In 1986 hegumen Savvaty (Sokur) was appointed rector of St. Basil's Parish. Through his labors, the temple was restored, in 1988 a baptismal room with rector's quarters and a pilgrimage room with a refectory were built. In 1990 hegumen Savvaty was elevated to the rank of archimandrite, and in 1992 he was tonsured a schema with the name Zosima. Over time, the number of people who wanted to serve God in this place under the spiritual guidance of Schema-Archimandrite Zosima increased. In 1998, a fraternal corps was built, and in 1999, a sister corps. In 1997, the monastery leased from the village council the “House of Temporary Residence”, located on the territory adjacent to the temple, where, through the efforts of the brethren and sisters, the almshouse “House of Mercy” was set up for 50 people to care for the infirm and the elderly. At the moment, there is a new almshouse built in 2003 for 100 people with a church in honor of St. Sampson the Hospitable. In 2001, the sister community was given the status of a monastery, and in 2002 a male monastery was registered. The convent is run by Abbess Anna (Morozova). The abbot of the monastery is Schema-Archimandrite Alipiy (Bondarenko). The archimandrite and rector of the monastery is Metropolitan Hilarion of Donetsk and Mariupol. A cenobitic charter was introduced in the monastery. There are daily services in the monastery. In the nursing building and in the almshouse, the indestructible Psalter is read. On Sundays and great feasts, the fraternal and sister choirs sing antiphonally at divine services. The monastery has a bakery, a library, a medical outpatient clinic for residents, workshops: carpentry, wood carving, gold embroidery, sewing, icon painting, and a furniture making workshop. The inhabitants of the monastery are engaged in agriculture. There is a Sunday school for children. The monastery receives pilgrims. In the basement of the nursing building there is a pilgrimage room for 200 people, there are hotel cells for the clergy.
