Numbers on English language begin to learn from the first stages of acquaintance with the English language. Particularly in teaching children, the first ten English digits are perhaps the easiest words to teach with visual support. To teach a child to count, one has only to show cards with numbers or start bending fingers, as prime numbers fit in the head on their own. Such a simple method will help you remember the numbers of the first ten without much difficulty.
Older students also come across numbers in English almost immediately - already at the stage of acquaintance dialogues. They are used to tell age, give dates, and are a common addition to words in plural.
The principle of the formation of English numerals
To learn how to count in English, it is important to learn the rules for the formation of English numerals. They are logical and easy to understand. English numbers from 1 to 20 are usually memorized by rote (this is quite easy to do, because their order corresponds exactly to their Russian equivalents), and the formation of the rest requires certain suffixes that must be added to the first ten numbers.
For greater clarity, let's put the numbers in the table and analyze how suffixes affect the meaning of words.
Numbers with "teen"
According to this table, it is easy to see that the English numerals of the second ten, starting from thirteen, are formed using the suffix -teen. Everyone knows the word teenager (teenager) that came to us from the English language, which includes this very suffix, as well as the word age. This word means - a teenager, i.e. a person between the ages of thirteen and nineteen. It is in these English numerals (the second section of the table) that the suffix -teen is used.
Dozens
If you look at the third section of the table, it is easy to understand the principle of the formation and use of numerals meaning tens (twenty, thirty, etc.) - they need a suffix -ty. The suffixes -teen and -ty are added to the corresponding numerals in the first ten. The only exceptions are 11 (eleven) and 12 (twelve), which are memorized along with the first ten digits. Also look at the numbers three, four and five in the table and their derivatives with suffixes. Remember the changes in their spelling.
Compound numbers
So, we have considered the principle of the formation of English numerals up to one hundred. It remains only to figure out what needs to be done to name compound numbers - of such an order as, for example, seventy-eight, fifty-four, etc. In fact, there is no difficulty here. Similar numbers in English are called similarly to Russian ones. To designate such numbers, a direct translation is used: seventy-eight - seventy-eight, fifty-four - fifty-four, etc. The only detail that deserves attention is that in English numerals of this type, unlike Russian ones, a hyphen is needed between parts.
Large numbers in English
We also suggest that you familiarize yourself with the method of forming large numbers in English. They are the same in both British and American languages.
As for hundreds, they are formed as follows: the basis “hundred” is taken (translated into Russian means “hundred”), the amount that is needed is attached to it. If we are talking about two hundred sheep, then we say “two hundred”, if we mean a hundred years, we use “one hundred”, etc.
Further, the account in English is constructed as follows: ten hundred form a thousand, which translates as "thousand". If you need to indicate a specific number of thousands, you need to resort (as in the case of hundreds) to numbers from 1 to 999. For example, “two thousand” is “two thousand” in English, five is “five thousand”.
Now let's write the numbers in Russian and translate them into English:
378 - three hundred and seventy-eight
5964 - five thousand nine hundred sixty-four - five thousand _ nine hundred and sixty-four
Pay attention:
- hundreds and thousands as part of complex numerals are set in the singular, and not in the plural (without the ending -s at the end of the word);
- before the last part of the numeral we insert the union and (and);
- do not forget about the hyphen in compound numbers with tens and ones.
Difficulties, as a rule, arise when reading just such complex numbers. Four-digit numbers in English in educational texts are most often found as years of some events. Such numbers denoting years (before 2000), beginners can not be scared. After all, speaking in English, it is customary to divide them into two parts: first we read the number from the first two digits, and then from the second two. These numbers are read as follows:
For example, someone was born in 1967 - in 1967. You need to read not “in (one) thousand nine hundred and sixty-seven”, as it would be in the Russian version, but “in nineteen sixty-seven” (“at nineteen sixty-seven ").
For the first ten years since 2000, the usual rule applies, i.e. 2000 - two thousand, 2007 - two thousand (and) seven.
Starting in 2011, you can again simplify reading - twenty - eleven (twenty eleven), twenty - twelve (twenty-twelve), etc.
Ordinal numbers in English
To indicate the order of objects, you need to study in detail the rule for the formation of ordinal numbers, since this topic can cause difficulties at first due to the existing features. The main rule in this case is to substitute the ending -th for a cardinal number, for example, eleventh (eleven), fifteenth (fifteen). At the same time, we recommend remembering the first nine ordinal English numbers - they are slightly different from general rule:
fourth |
|||
If we are talking about a serious scientific article or an official document, then it is better to use “firstly, secondly, thirdly”. However, in situations of everyday communication, we recommend using “first, second, third” - this will be easier and more familiar to the ear of any native speaker.
Fractions in English
Fractions require a separate discussion. To avoid mistakes in simple fractions, remember just a few rules:
- The numerator is read as a cardinal number, and the denominator as an ordinal.
- If the numerator is greater than one, the denominator gets "-s" at the end.
- The integer part, if available, is joined to the fractional part using the union "and".
For example, ⅓ is pronounced as "one third", ⅗ as "three fifths", 1⅔ in speech is reproduced as "one and two thirds".
With decimal fractions, everything is much simpler - the available characters are read in order. If there is a zero in front, we use "nought". The point between the integer and the fractional part is "point".
For example, 55.5 - five five point five; 0.4 - nought point four, 1.22 - one point two two.

Zero in English
Zero in English is called different words: zero, o (read like a letter), nill, nought. In general, they are equivalent, but there are slight differences.
- Zero- the most reliable and neutral of these words, zero is a mathematical zero, temperature zero (zero degrees). It's better to say "zero" to avoid confusion.
- O- often used instead of "zero" in colloquial speech, when you need to name exactly the number (for example, in a phone number).
- Nill- literally "nothing", is usually used when it comes to the score in the game: Argentina - five, Jamaica - nill.
- Nought- also “nothing”, in the USA it is practically not used, in British English it is already considered obsolete.
- There are also very highly specialized, jargon zeros, for example "love"- zero at the score in tennis. There is an interesting version (this is more a bike than a scientific hypothesis) that the French called the score of zero points “egg” (by similarity to zero), in French “l’œuf”. The British adopted, somewhat distorting, this term and it turned into “love”.

Numbers are all around us. Every day we count objects, name times, dates, add, divide, multiply. Therefore, numerals in English are the main topic for learning for beginners. All numbers can be divided into two large groups- quantitative and ordinal. Consider how these and other English numbers are written and read in the form of tables with rules, transcription, explanations and examples.
But let's start with the very first number - 0 (zero - zero). In conversation, we often pronounce zero as “oh” (oh).
Cardinal numbers
These are the most commonly used numbers that answer the question "How much?". They are easier to remember when divided into groups. The table shows how the numbers are pronounced in Russian.

Account in English and Russian from zero to one hundred thousand
1. Count from zero to twenty
To begin with, let's give a table of English numerals from zero to twenty. Why up to twenty? Is this some kind of special technique for learning English numbers? No, just learn at least up to twenty first.))

Note. The numeral "zero" is pronounced "oh" in cases where all the numbers, including "zero", must be pronounced separately. For example, when they call the room number in a hotel: Her room number is two-Oh-three (203). When pronouncing decimal fractions numeral zero reads like nought, separating point (Russian version - comma) - point, e. g. 0.8 = nought point eight.
2. Counting from twenty to twenty nine
In order to form numerals from 20 to 29 we use the same principle as in Russian, first - tens, then - units. For example, how do you say "twenty-two" in English? That's right, twenty-two. Very easy. The only thing you should pay attention to is that numerals consisting of two digits, the first of which stands for tens, are written in English hyphenated. In the table below, as an example, numerals are given from 21 to 29, according to the same principle, any quantitative names numerals from 21 to 99.

Let me remind you that now you can already form your own numerals from 21 to 99. We write tens first, then units, put a hyphen between them. How do you say seventy-nine in English? Correctly, seventy nine.
Account from one hundred to one hundred thousand
Tens (in British English) must be preceded by a conjunction and(even when tens are indicated by zero : 108 = a hundred and eight). Also, do not forget to put a hyphen between tens and ones.
