The Importance of Reading the Qur'an in Ramadan Chapter Ten

  • 01.10.2022

One of the most desirable activities during Ramadan is reading the Quran. It was in this month that the holy book was sent down.

“The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down with clear signs as a guide for all people and as a clarification of the straight path separating truth from falsehood”

(Quran, 2:185).

All the righteous followers of Islam in Ramadan tried to leave everything and plunge into the world of reading and understanding the Koran.

Ibn Hakim said: “At the onset of Ramadan, Imam Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, “ran away” from reading hadith and sitting with theologians to reading the Koran.”

Many try to complete the reading of the entire Quran at least once. But there are those who complete 2, 5, 10, or even more times.

We all should strengthen our connection with the Quran this month and take the time to read the Quran and meditate on its sacred meaning.

Dear friends, what surah have you reached? Today is the sixth day of Ramadan. We hope you have already completed the surahs "Baqara", "Imran" and "An-Nisa" and are ready to read "Al-Maida".

“Why would the Almighty punish you if you became grateful to Him and believed. [In response to your gratitude] He repays generously and knows everything.”

Naoman Ali Khan comments:

Before proceeding with the explanation of verse 147, one must understand the previous two.

The hypocrites... They [will forever be placed] on the lowest level of Hell. You will never find someone to help them [get out of there].

The only exceptions will be those of them who [still in the worldly abode] repent, reform, hold fast to God and become sincere in observing religious postulates. They [will abide in eternity] with the believers. For believers, in the future [after the Day of Judgment], the Lord will certainly reward with an unusually huge reward.

These verses indicate that hypocrisy is not a sentence. This is a curable disease. The hypocrites can change. The doors of Allah's forgiveness are always open. As soon as they repent and return to the path of Allah, they become believers.

In Sura An-Nisa, more than 60 verses are devoted to the topic of hypocrisy. This is a very complex and serious topic. While you are reading these verses, you involuntarily wonder "And who am I? Isn't he a hypocrite?"

And at a time when a person thinks that he is mired in the most serious sins and thinks that there is no way to God, and the shaitan incites him to this with the words “Allah will punish you in any way. You will enter hell,” the person begins to wonder: Why did Allah create Hell? What will Allah do if he punishes me? Why does He want to throw me into hell?”

And when a person begins to ask such questions, Allah says:

“Why would the Almighty punish you? (why does he need this? Do you think this is his main goal?), if you were grateful to him even a little, and would believe in Him, He would reward you generously.

Allah greatly appreciates gratitude. Allah would appreciate if you would be grateful for all the good that he gives you.

The daughter of the great scientist Hassan al-Basri, once got hurt. He, like a loving father, ran to her, picked her up, and began to ask about “How does she feel?”. And she answered him: "Alhamdulillah. Praise be to Allah who protected me and kept me alive"

Ramadan is inextricably linked with the Quran, because it was in this month that this great Book was sent down. The Almighty said:

The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was sent down (2:185).

Fasting is one of the best means to eliminate human attachments that prevent you from seeing the light of the Almighty, which pervades the Qur'an. Accordingly, the connection between fasting and the Book of Allah is also very strong. Since the Qur'an was sent down in Ramadan, fasting should also be prescribed in this month, because the fasting person can best perceive the correct guidance of Allah sent down by Him in the Qur'an.

The verses make us understand that one of the greatest purposes of fasting is to purify the mind in order to understand the Qur'an. After mentioning the obligation to fast: "You are prescribed fasting" (2:183) It says about the sending down of the Book of Allah in Ramadan: "In the month of Ramadan the Qur'an was sent down" (2:185). That is, the Quran is the reason for fasting this month. Both Ramadan and fasting are all for the sake of the Qur'an, and therefore it is not surprising that Ramadan is called the month of the Qur'an.

Our righteous predecessors understood this well. They knew that the main purpose of Ramadan is to pay attention to the Quran, to protect and observe its commandments, and fasting is needed in order to clear the mind of a person for the perception of the Quran. Az-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about what to do in Ramadan, and he said: "Read the Qur'an and feed the people."

When reading the Qur'an, both in Ramadan and at other times, we must remember that our goal is to meditate on the Words of the Almighty and delve into their meaning. Therefore, Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the first of the ten deeds that help win the love of the Almighty is “reading the Qur'an, accompanied by reflection and an attempt to understand the meaning and meaning of each particular verse contained in it, just as a person reflects on the book, which he memorizes and analyzes, trying to fully understand what the author had in mind.

And al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali said: “Indeed, those who lived before you considered the Qur’an as messages from their Lord, tried to comprehend them at night and studied them during the day.”

Ibn al-Jawzi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The one who reads the Great Quran should understand what kindness Allah Almighty showed to His creations, bringing the meaning of His Words to their understanding, and know that what he is now reading is not the words of a person. And at the same time, he must realize the greatness of the One from Whom these Words come, and reflect on the meaning contained in them.

And it is a great relief and mercy of Allah that He allowed such weak creatures like us to have a secret conversation with Him, to explore and study His Book and meditate on the meanings contained in it.

Ibn al-Salah said: “Reading the Qur'an is an honor given by the Almighty to mankind. It is reported that the angels were not given such honor, and that they are eager to hear it from people.

However, Almighty Allah not only allowed us, by His mercy and His generosity, to have a secret conversation with Him and look at His Words. He also gave us the highest position for doing this. The Almighty said:

Verily, those who read the Book of Allah, pray and spend from what We have endowed them, secretly and openly, hope for a deal that will not be unsuccessful, so that He will reward them in full and even add from His mercy. Verily, He is Forgiving, Thankful (35:29–30).

The Almighty chose for himself the people of His Scripture, who read it and act in accordance with it, and made them worthy possessors of it.

The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Among the people there are the people of Allah.” The people asked: “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: People of the Koran. They are the people of Allah and His associates.

If you are attentive to the Quran in Ramadan, dear brothers and sisters, if you read and study it, your attitude to the Holy Book will begin to improve, and you will be able to become the people of the Quran and, accordingly, the people of Allah and His associates, and not be one of those who abandoned the Scripture and thereby incurred the wrath of Allah and the complaint of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "God! My people left and abandoned this Qur'an" (25:30).

Determine for yourself the amount that you can read daily in the month of fasting, and try to read the same amount every day when Ramadan ends, so that you will be "people of remembrance" and not "people of abandonment." Dividing the Koran into small parts that are constantly read is Sunnah, but it has long been forgotten even by the preachers of Islam and observant Muslims, not to mention ordinary people. Our righteous predecessors used to read a certain part of the Quran every day. Often this was the part that allowed them to read the Qur'an in full in a month, or so much that they could read it in a week or, for example, in three days. And the fact that this is the Sunnah is indicated by reliable hadiths, for example, the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Who overslept reading what he usually reads at night or part of it, and then read it between the morning and noon prayers , it will be written to him as if he had read it at night.

And the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) took from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) an example in dividing the Qur'an into parts. Once he hosted several people from the Sakif tribe, and every evening he came to them after the evening prayer and talked with them, and one day he lingered, and when he arrived, they told him: "You lingered." He said, "I started reading the part of the Qur'an that I usually read and didn't want to leave until I finished reading it." The narrator of this hadeeth, Aws ibn Hudhayfa al-Thaqafi said: “I asked the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): how do you divide the Qur'an? And they said: three, then five, then seven, then nine, then eleven, then thirteen, and then a part consisting of short suras.

And ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) divided the Qur’an so that she could read it completely in seven days. She said: "I read my part (or: the seventh part) while sitting on my mat or bed." However, in Ramadan, the attitude of our righteous predecessors was different. During this month, from the recitation of the Qur'an, a sound like the buzzing of bees came from their homes. And although the entire Ramadan is the most worthy and suitable time for reading the Quran and remembering Allah, the night is most suitable for this - because at this time a person's feelings are aggravated, and he perceives what is read better. Perhaps that is why in Ramadan Jibril came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) at night to repeat the Qur'an with him, as mentioned by Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them).

Ibn Rajab commented on this hadith as follows: “He points out that it is better to read the Qur'an in Ramadan at night, because at night business and worries end, a person concentrates, and his tongue and heart are better tuned to an in-depth reading of the Qur'an and thinking about what is contained in it. sense. After all, the Almighty said: “Verily, prayers after waking up in the middle of the night make a stronger impression and are clearer in presentation” (73:6).

This is about time. And if we talk about the place, then it is best, of course, to read the Koran in the mosque, especially if you combine reading with learning.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whenever people gather in one of the houses of Allah, where they read and study the Book of Allah together, calmness surely descends on them, and mercy covers them, and angels surround them, and Allah remembers them among those who are with Him.

“O Allah! Make the great Qur'an the spring of our hearts, the light of our breasts, the removal of our anxiety and sorrow. Help us to remember what we have forgotten from it, and teach us what we do not know from it… Amen!

So that blessed month has come, which all Muslims have been waiting for with trepidation and special love. Ramadan is not just a month of fasting, good deeds and repeated remembrance of Allah, Ramadan is the month of the Quran.

The Qur'an is the luminary that illuminates the hearts of Muslims and will illuminate until the Day of Judgment. Ramadan is inextricably linked with the Quran, because it was in this month that this great Book was revealed. The Almighty said:

"The month of Ramadan in which the Qur'an was sent down" (2:185).

Fasting is one of the best means to pacify a person’s temper, calm his soul and body. During fasting, a person gets rid of worldly attachments, which prevents him from seeing the light of the Almighty, which pervades the Koran. Accordingly, the connection between fasting and the Book of Allah is also very strong. Since the Qur'an was sent down in Ramadan, then fasting should be prescribed in this month, because the fasting person can best perceive the correct guidance of Allah sent down by Him in the Qur'an.

Allah Almighty said (meaning): “The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down with clear signs as a guide for all people and as a clarification of the straight path separating truth from falsehood” (Quran, 2:185). In this verse, the Almighty praises the month of fasting and exalts it above the rest of the months, for He chose it for the Holy Quran.

The verses make us understand that one of the greatest purposes of fasting is to purify the mind in order to understand the Qur'an. After mentioning the obligation to fast: "You are prescribed fasting" (2:183) It says about the sending down of the Book of Allah in Ramadan: "In the month of Ramadan the Qur'an was sent down" (2:185) . That is, the Quran is the reason for fasting this month. Both Ramadan and fasting are all for the sake of the Qur'an, and therefore it is not surprising that Ramadan is called the month of the Qur'an.

Truly, Ramadan with this blessed beginning is considered a great gift for a Muslim and a convenient moment to purify his soul during the day in preparation for receiving gifts from the Quran in the nighttime worship at night. And this is witnessed by the Qur'an (meaning): "Verily, the worship of Allah at night is stronger in the heart, clearer in words, more correct and concentrated in reading than worship in the daytime" (Quran, 73:6). It turns out that daytime fasting is purification, and nighttime worship - prayers and reading the Koran - is an adornment of the soul.

Narrated Ibn Abbas: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most generous of people. He became even more generous when he met Jabrail (peace be upon him), who came to him every night from the month of Ramadan and taught the Koran - at this time he became more generous than the free wind ”(al-Bukhari, Muslim). Ibn Rajab said that this hadith indicates the desirability of learning the Qur'an, and it is especially good to read and listen to it in the month of Ramadan. This hadeeth is also an argument that it is desirable to read the Qur'an more this month.

As can be seen from the hadith, the teaching of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took place at night, which indicates the desirability of reading the Qur'an in the month of Ramadan at night. “Verily, at night, deeds and worries stop, and a person can direct all diligence to reading and thinking about it” (Lataif al-Maarif).

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “For each letter read from the Qur'an, a good deed will be written, and for every good deed it will be rewarded tenfold. I do not say that "alif", "lam", "mim" are one letter; No, Alif is a letter, and Lam is a letter, and Mim is a single letter” (at-Tirmidhi).

And it is a great relief, and the mercy of Allah, that He allowed such weak creatures like us to have a secret conversation with Him, to explore and study His Book and meditate on the meanings contained in it.

If we are attentive to the Quran in Ramadan, we will read it and study it, our attitude towards the Holy Book will begin to improve, and we will be able to become people of the Quran.

However, in order for the reading of the Quran to bring maximum benefit to the believer, one should take into account some rules transmitted from the words of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

1. Cleansing before reading

The Quran says: " Only those who are cleansed touch it” (Sura “al Waqia”, “Event”, ayat 79).

It is forbidden to touch the Quran without being in a state of ablution.

2. Reading volume

According to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), it is reported : "The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not read the Qur'an in less than three days!" Imam Badruddin al-Aini said : "The meaning of this hadeeth is that the one who reads the Qur'an misses what he is ordered from reading in accordance with the rules and reflection faster than in three days!". Abu Jamra also said: “Once I said to Ibn Abbas: “I am a person who reads the Qur'an quickly, and it may be that I read the Qur'an once or twice during the night!”. Ibn Abbas said: “Reading one sura a night is preferable to me than doing what you are doing!” That is, you should not rush to read the Qur'an, as this may prevent you from reading it correctly and understanding the meaning of its verses.

3. Chanting in a beautiful voice

It is advisable to read the Quran as beautifully as possible, in a singsong voice. So, it is reported from the words of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever reads the Qur'an, being skilled in it, (will be) with noble and obedient scribes, and whoever reads the Qur'an, haltingly and experiencing difficulties, (destined) is a double reward”(Muslim).

Also in another hadith it is said : "Whoever does not chant the Qur'an in a beautiful voice, pronouncing sounds clearly and clearly, he is not one of us."

4. Making prostrations

There are 14 verses in the Qur'an, when reading which you need to bow to the ground. For example, in Surah al-Sajdah: “... they fall on their faces, bowing to the ground out of fear of the punishment of Allah and recognizing that He is above all that does not befit Him, along with praising Him for mercies, being not rejecting the faith and not those who refuse to worship out of pride” (verse 15).

5. Accompanying the reading of the verses of the dua and the remembrance of Allah

Hudhayfa al-Yamani said: “Once I was praying with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He began to read Surah al-Baqarah and did not read the verse with words about mercy without asking Allah for it, and did not read the verse about the punishment of God without being protected by Him from him, and did not read the verse, which says that Allah is above all what is not befitting to Him without saying "Subhan Allah".

6. Reading in different ways

It is said that once the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, passed by three of his companions, each of whom recited the Qur'an in a different way. He approached Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and he recited quietly and asked him about it, to which Abu Bakr said: “Verily, the One to whom I call hears me.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) approached Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, and he said: “I wake up the sleeping and drive away the devil”. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) approached Bilal al-Habashi, and he recited several verses from one sura, and then undertook to read verses from another sura. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked him about this and he said: "I mix the best with the best." And then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to them: "Each of you did the right thing and in the best way."

If a person does not know how to read the Quran, then he can earn a reward by listening to it. As the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said : "Whoever listens to a verse from the Book of Allah, to him it will be a light on the Day of Judgment."

May the Almighty help us in Ramadan to increase our love for the Quran and accept from us every letter of His book we hear and read!

Ramadan is inextricably linked with the Quran, because it was in this month that this great Book was revealed. The Almighty said: "The month of Ramadan in which the Qur'an was sent down"(2:185).

Az-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about what to do in Ramadan and he said: "Read the Quran and feed the people." My people left and abandoned this Qur'an."(25:30).

Determine for yourself the volume that you can read daily in the month of fasting, and try to read the same amount every day when Ramadan ends, so that you will be “people of remembrance”, and not “ people of abandonment.

Al-Hafiz al-‘Iraqi called him good when analyzing the hadith “Al-ihya” (T. 1. S. 276).

[Ibn Kasir cited it in his Tafsir as evidence that the division of the Qur'an into parts was practiced during the lifetime of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, It was also used as evidence by the Sheikh of Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, talking about the division of the Qur'an into suras and parts. The commentator “‘Aun al-ma‘bud” said about this hadith: “Hizb is a part of the Qur'an, the reading of which a person imposes on himself, and the three are the surahs “Cow”, “Imran's Family” and “Women”. These three suras occupy one step of the seven existing. Five are suras from "Meal" to "Repentance". Seven - from "Yunus" to "Bee". Nine - from "Lined up" to "Chambers". And the part consisting of short surahs is the part from the surah “Kaf” to the end of the Qur'an. As we all know, Ramadan is the month of the Quran. But time flies, and too often we only try to quickly finish reading the Holy Book of Allah, or even more than once, without reflecting on what the Almighty has sent down to us in it and putting it into practice.

This Quran guide is designed to make this Ramadan meaningful, conscious and truly special for me and for you.

It is split into 5 columns.

The Desirability of Reading the Quran in Ramadan and the Desirability of Reading it at Night

imam Ibn Rojab al-Hanbali in the sharh of a hadith narrated by al-Bukhari from Ibn Abbas that he said:
جبريل يلقاه كل ليلة من رمضان فيدارسه القرآن

"Jibril met with the Prophet every night of Ramadan, teaching (repeating) him the Qur'an."

Imam said Ibn Rojab:

“The hadith is proof of the desirability of studying the Qur'an in Ramadan, and gathering for this, and reading the Qur'an in front of one who is more knowledgeable and memorizes in it.

And in this hadith, Dalil on the desirability of increasing the reading of the Qur'an in the month of Ramadan. And it came in the hadith of Fatima, peace be upon her, about her father (the Prophet) - that he read the Qur'an to Jibril every year once a year, and in the year he died, he read it twice.

Also in this hadith of Ibn Abbas it came that the study of the Qur'an by the Prophet and Jibril was at night, and this serves as an argument that it is desirable to read the Qur'an more on the nights of Ramadan.

In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

Verily, we praise Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, to Him we resort for help, and from Him we ask for forgiveness, and we resort to salvation from the evil of our souls, and our bad deeds. The one whom Allah guides, no one will knock him down, and the one whom He knocked down, no one will guide him to the straight path. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger, and then:

Often women, even having been in Islam for a long time and on correct beliefs, experience bewilderment and annoyance at the fact that men have much more opportunities to do good deeds and earn a reward from Allah, especially in this blessed month when “The gates of heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains” (Al-Bukhari 1800, Muslim 1079).

The desire to earn the pleasure of Allah and His mercy, while at the same time being shackled by household chores and raising children, is what excites many Muslim sisters. And this is not something new that has appeared in our time. Such a question worried women even in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). We learn about this from the famous hadith.

Once when the Messenger of Allah was among the Companions, Asma, the daughter of Yazid, approached him and turned to him:

“You are like a father and mother to me, I came to you as a representative of all women, I am ready to give my soul for you. And all women from east to west will agree with my opinion that Allah Almighty sent you with the truth to all men and women, and we believed in you and in your Lord who sent you. I am one of the many women sitting at home who fulfill your desires, carry your children, and you men are more valuable than us in that you can attend Friday prayers, collective prayers, make a pilgrimage every year, participate in the struggle on the path of Allah. We, when you go on a hajj, hike, keep ourselves and your property, sew your clothes and cannot participate in these good deeds, O Messenger of Allah.

The Messenger of Allah turned to face his companions and asked: “Have you ever heard from a woman a speech in the matter of religion more beautiful than this?”

Then the Messenger of Allah turned to her and said: “Go back and tell other women that the best of you will be the one who asks her husband about what he will be pleased with, who will do what he wants, agree with his opinion. Doing all this will be equal to what he wants, to agree with his opinion. The fulfillment of all this will be equal to the reward that the husband receives from those deeds in which the wife cannot take part.

Hearing this, the woman turned and left, saying with joy “La ilaha illallah” and “Allahu Akbar”.

(Reported by Abu Dawud)

From this hadeeth, we see that the mercy of Allah is great towards women, and our concern for a husband, obedience to him, housekeeping and raising children is already enough to receive a reward equal to everything that men do (from those listed in the hadeeth) , and praise for this to Allah Alone, if all this is done for the sake of His Face and His contentment.

However, for those of our sisters who want to be zealous in receiving a reward in the month of Ramadan, we have made a selection of those good deeds that every woman can do this month with the help of Allah. May Allah help you in doing good, because Allah makes it easier for a person to do good deeds and draw closer to his Lord:

“Allah Almighty says: “I will be what My servant thinks I am, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his soul, then I will remember him about Myself, and if he remembers Me in society (other people), then I will remember him among those who are better than them. If a slave approaches Me by a span, I will approach him by a cubit, if He approaches Me by a cubit, I will approach him by a fathom, and if he walks towards Me, I will run towards him!”

(Al-Bukhari; Muslim; at-Tirmidhi)

We hope that by the will of Allah, our sisters will benefit from this article and distribute it among the sisters, in print or in oral form, and our reward and the reward of those who help in its distribution will increase without reducing the reward of all those who follow the advice mentioned in the article, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Whoever starts a good deed and others follow him will receive his reward and a reward equal to that of those who followed him, without detracting from their reward in the least.”

(At-Tirmidhi, 2675)

1. Make this month a month of repentance - repent of your sins and be sure to ask Allah to help leave these sins forever and move us away from this.

Allah said:

“Say: “O My servants, who have crossed the limit to the detriment of themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah! Verily, Allah forgives all sins, verily, He is Forgiving, Merciful! Turn to your Lord in repentance and submit to Him.” (az-Zumar 39:53-54)

Asking for forgiveness from Allah should be persistent, while having the intention of never returning to doing it. Forgiveness can be asked in dua, sujud, azkars and in the at-tauba prayer:

Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “If any of the servants of Allah commits a sin, after which he performs ablution properly, then prays two rak'ats and asks Allah for forgiveness, Allah will surely forgive him.” Then he recited the following verse: “To those who, having committed an abominable deed or acted unjustly against themselves, remembered Allah and asked for forgiveness for their sins - after all, who forgives sins except Allah? - and those who consciously do not persist in what they have done, the reward will be forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens of Eden ”(Ali ‘Imran 3: 135). Abu Dawud 1521, at-Tirmidhi 406, Ibn Majah 1395.

A selection of materials on fasting in the month of Ramadan: articles and fatwas, books, audio lectures and audio books. (Links have not been removed to make it easier to copy the compilation. Distribute the Bismillah among Muslims and may Allah grant you a reward equal to the reward of all who benefit from these materials and follow it without diminishing the reward of any of them. Messenger of Allah (peace be upon and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever starts a good deed and others follow him, receive his reward and a reward equal to that of those who followed him, without detracting from their reward in the least. Whoever starts an evil deed and others follow him, will bear the burden of his sin and the burden of sin equal to that of those who followed him, without diminishing their burden in the least. (At-Tirmidhi, 2675. He said: This is a sahih hasan hadeeth)
