To just stretch to your full height and relax, to temporarily throw all unnecessary disturbing thoughts out of your head. Only a truly comfortable double bed with your own hands can give you such peace of mind and a state of bliss. Of course, comfort is mainly determined by the quality of the mattress. But something definitely depends on the design of the bed itself.

How to make a double bed with your own hands

Conventionally, a do-it-yourself double bed is a prefabricated structure consisting of a backrest (headboard) and the mattress box itself.

The design of the box is radically different in two cases: when it is designed for an orthopedic base and consists entirely of laminated chipboard.

• The orthopedic base is a metal frame with a bed of flexible lamellas. In minimalistic variations it is often used without additional add-ons. In all other cases, a hollow box is assembled around it, to which the back is attached. You can build drawers into the overall structure, but do not forget about the central support leg of the orthopedic base itself, which must somehow be “bypassed”. The best option is to make boxes on wheels that are absolutely not attached to the internal partitions; they can be completely pulled out and retracted. It is better to choose upright wheel supports.

• A do-it-yourself double bed with a base made of chipboard is much more expensive in terms of material consumption. Inside the frame, you need to install partitions on which the base for the mattress will “lie.” The edges of the bottom should also rest on something; usually a narrow strip is used around the perimeter. Drawers can also be made on wheels or attached to partition guides. The second option allows you to make the drawers deeper, approximately to the height of the wheels.

The assembled body can be used in interesting ways - for example, to implement designer runway options.


But the main decoration of a double bed is still the headboard. It can be complemented by bedside tables, shelves, and consoles integrated into the overall design.

Do-it-yourself double bed, drawings and diagrams of headboards

The easiest option is to order a ready-made MDF backrest from a company specializing in the production of kitchen fronts, or from a solid wood carpenter.


But you can also make a beautiful headboard for a double bed with your own hands. There may be several options.

You can give the headboard an interesting shape by first drawing the template diagram on a scaled drawing.


The trend is for double beds with soft headboards and vinyl leather and foam inserts. It’s easy to make a double bed of this kind with your own hands: holes are drilled in a chipboard template for pulling buttons, foam rubber is applied, and a custom-made cover made of vinyl leather or any selected furniture fabric is “put on.” Buttons on the legs (it’s better to take metal ones) can be covered in the color of the material or left as is.


Options with a thicker headboard look impressive. You can run the panel along the top and sides of the headboard. Or arrange it in the form of “columns”.


You can extend the edges of the headboard beyond the bed frame and complement it with cantilever shelves or hanging cabinets. There is one BUT - the limitation of the laminated chipboard sheet. If the headboard of a double bed is longer than 2750 mm, a joint in the center cannot be avoided.


The same situation will happen if the headboards are released behind the backs of the bedside tables. But here there is an option to implement an asymmetrical shape, with the headboard extending beyond one cabinet.


The standard width of bedrooms is about three meters. With the generally accepted length of a sleeping place being two meters, this does not allow you to implement practical drawings and designs of double beds with your own hands with voluminous headboards, in the depths of which an additional niche is “hidden” for storing seasonal bedding, blankets, bedspreads and pillows. But if your room is wider, why not take advantage of this.


Also, owners of spacious bedrooms have the opportunity to implement interesting options with inclined and curved headboards.

Decorating headboards for beds without a backrest

Often, the design approach to bedroom interior design assumes that all furnishings will be located in strictly designated areas. Double beds are built into niches, illuminated bay windows, complemented by canopies and interesting ceiling designs. In this case, you don’t have to make a headboard for the bed, but “mark” its position on the wall.


In this case, it is also not necessary to make a box for the bed - an orthopedic base with a mattress is quite enough.

In furniture stores, the range of furniture presented is huge. However, its cost is quite high; a bed made of high-quality wood is especially expensive. In some cases, it is not at all necessary to spend large sums on furniture sets; a hand-made wooden bed would be an excellent solution to this problem.

Types of beds

Bed models are different, many of them are not similar to each other. They differ not only in material and size, but also in their purpose. Wooden beds are most in demand, since wood is a natural, environmentally friendly material. For the manufacture of this type of furniture, wood such as walnut, cherry, beech, maple, pine, birch or oak is used. You can make almost any wooden model yourself, let it be a children’s wooden bed made by yourself, a loft bed, a transformer, a bunk structure, and so on.

Beds come in single, double, and one-and-a-half sizes. A single bed has a width of no more than one meter, a one-and-a-half bed - from 110-160 cm, a double bed - from 180 to 220 cm.

Dimensions

It is important to understand that the classic version is always taken as the basis for any bed construction. The first step when creating wooden beds with your own hands is the process of determining the dimensions of the future structure for sleeping. The easiest way is to build a bed for a certain mattress size, and not vice versa. Basically, all store products have standard sizes. Let's look at the steps of making a bed yourself using the most common mattress size - 200x155 cm.

Required material

First, let's determine what the bed consists of. Its design includes a frame and a frame on which the mattress is placed. The first consists of back and side panels. Before you make a wooden bed with your own hands, you need to stock up on the materials necessary for the work. The main thing is to use only dry material:

1. Boards 250x30 cm, thickness 2.5 cm, 2 pcs. for making bed side walls.

2. Boards 200x30 cm (3 pieces) for making the back and front walls, headboard.

3. 200 cm size 4x4 cm in the amount of 5 pieces - for load-bearing legs and supports.

4. Slats 150 cm long, 2.5 cm thick are used for attaching headboard boards, for slatted covering - 27 pcs. Sometimes thick plywood can be used instead of slats.

5. Self-tapping screws for wood.

6. Stain.

7. Polyurethane-based varnish, wood glue.

Tools

Making a bed yourself is not a particularly complicated process, but it is quite labor-intensive and takes some time. Any person who has at least some idea of ​​working with wood can cope with this task. It is clear that making a wooden bed with your own hands requires the use of some tools. Here they are:

Hacksaw;

Screwdriver;

Plane;

Jigsaw;

Sandpaper;

Measuring instruments or devices;

Pencil.

Preparatory stage

When starting any business, it is important to have an idea of ​​what should happen. This also applies to the case when you make a wooden bed with your own hands. Drawings and sketches must be prepared in advance. All sizes will be indicated there. Having a well-drawn drawing, you can easily and quickly calculate the required amount of material.

As mentioned above, the bed will be designed based on the size of the mattress. It should be in the bed as in a cell, that is, the internal dimensions of the frame should be equal to the dimensions of the mattress.

Having prepared all the necessary tools and materials, you need to mark the materials for further sawing. The lines for sawing should be drawn with a pencil or a cutter along a ruler. To make work easier when creating two or three identical parts, you can cut out only one and then use it as a template. All surfaces after sawing are carefully processed with sandpaper.

Frame making

The direct manufacturing process includes measuring the mattress. In accordance with the measurements taken, you need to cut a couple of end and a couple of long (for the sides of the bed) boards. The prepared parts are assembled into rectangles and fastened with lugs or wooden spikes. The connection must be W-shaped. The holes can be hollowed out with a chisel; some people cut them with a jigsaw. The width of the groove should be at least 20-30 mm, and the depth - 50 mm. The tenons or eyes must be lubricated with wood glue, then connected and aligned at an angle of 90 degrees. Then the elements should be fixed using a special device until completely dry.

When wooden bunk beds are made with your own hands, the same bed is used as a basis. Assembly and manufacturing were described in this article above.

A wooden bed with such a frame is a reliable and high-quality product; it is an example of a traditional carpentry joint, as experienced carpenters call it. If it is not possible to make eyelets, then a tenon fastening can be used to connect the wooden parts. When making wooden beds with your own hands, holes are made in the end sides of the mating surfaces of the boards, the diameter of which corresponds to the diameter of the tenon. The spikes and holes are lubricated with glue and assembled.

The easiest way to connect the parts of a wooden bed frame is self-tapping with additional fastening with a metal corner.

Assembling the lamella frame

A slatted frame, lattice or mesh is a structure for supporting a mattress. Thanks to its presence, the mattress will not fall to the floor, deform or be pressed inward. In the process of making bedroom furniture, including when constructing a double wooden bed with your own hands, you will need a slats. It needs to be stuffed along the inside of the frame onto the end and side boards. Next, you need to make markings in height - at least 10 cm from the top edge. The rail is attached with a dotted or solid line around the perimeter. In this case, it is also suitable and the frame must have at least one partition that will support the mattress, even if it has its own rigid frame. And if a frameless design is used, then the bottom of the bed should be solid. Before you make a wooden bed with your own hands, you need to make a frame for the slats from timber. It is fixed according to the internal dimensions of the bed structure. A rail is placed on the frame across the length of the bed in increments of 5-7 cm.

Bed head and legs

In order to make a headboard, you need to cut a board of the required size and configuration. The ends are treated with sandpaper and screwed into the contact points, having previously lubricated them with wood glue. You can order a backrest for the headboard and footboard in a carpentry workshop with individual carved decor. Next, do-it-yourself wooden beds are installed on reliable and durable legs. Their height depends on the individual preferences of the master, on the interior design of the room, as well as on the possibility of using the free space under the bed, etc.

To make the legs, beams are used; they can be either square or round. The legs are mounted in the corners of bedroom furniture. They can be installed inside or outside, and also inserted into the In the latter option, a more reliable studded mount must be used for assembly. It is necessary to ensure that the upper edge of the legs does not protrude above the partitions.

The final stage

The finishing coating that will be used to decorate wooden beds made by yourself must be in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment and fit into the interior.

At the beginning of work, it is necessary to carefully sand the entire frame of the bed, then saturate the entire surface with drying oil and paint it. To give bedroom furniture the desired shade or color, its frame is finished with a special stain. It will give the necessary shade. Then, after it has dried, you can coat the bed with varnish using a brush or roller. It is recommended to apply the varnish in several layers. It is advisable to polish the dried surface with felt. Some people use felt.

When work on the manufacture of a bed is carried out according to a pre-prepared drawing or diagram, then no special problems arise with the assembly or operation of the product. A wooden bed created with your own hands will delight its owner for many years.

How to make a double DIY bed? I present a complete set of sketches and drawings for making a double bed with your own hands.

The task was to make such a project for a double bed and use such materials so that it would turn out beautiful, comfortable, strong and not expensive.

The project was developed in such a way that, according to the presented drawings, even a craftsman who does not have sufficient experience in making furniture could easily translate the project into a finished product. At the same time, to make a bed you will need the most simple power tool , which every home craftsman probably has.

Double bed dimensions.

The dimensions of the double bed are determined based on the dimensions of the orthopedic mattress. Mattress size 2000 x 1600 mm. Mattress thickness 200 mm.

Bed height calculation taking into account the thickness of the mattress. According to the calculation diagram below, it can be seen that the height of the mattress surface is 416 mm. from the floor. In this project, the height of the front backrest will be calculated so that, even taking into account the decorative lining, it does not protrude beyond the surface of the mattress. Each master will be able to individually select the height of the front backrest, make it higher or lower than the level of the mattress. Below is not advisable as it will not look very nice in the finished product. You can do it as in our version or 5 centimeters higher.

This bed has a very nice appearance, is very strong and can serve its owners for a very long time. But most importantly, the bed is very easy to make and comes out quite cheap compared to.

The simplest materials were used for production, but which nevertheless guarantee the beauty and quality of the finished product.

Used: regular pine timber 50 x 50 mm, laminated chipboard and sanded chipboard as a base for the mattress. Used for decorative finishing MDF profile AGT(or profile of any another manufacturer , but with similar parameters).

Pine timber, in the design, is used as reinforcement of the bed frame and as a support for the base under the mattress.

You can buy such timber at any construction market in any city. Sold timber section 50 x 50 mm. 4.5 and 6 m long. One beam is very cheap and is usually sold by the piece.

For a bed you will need approximately 6.8 lm. timber. Therefore, it is optimal to buy two beams 4.5 m long.

The timber is sold sawn, but not planed. For the bed, no additional processing of the timber is required, i.e. it will not need to be planed or sanded. It can be consumed directly in the form in which it is sold, since it is an internal element of the double bed structure.

1. Large headboard(back) or, as it is also called, the headboard.

Made from laminated chipboard and MDF profile. At material cutting , the part on the sheet should be oriented so that the texture of the laminate is from top to bottom, i.e. transverse. The size of a standard chipboard sheet is 1830 mm wide, so the part can be freely placed in the desired position.

Another decorative profile is installed along the upper end of the backrest. This project uses the AGT 1046 profile. The master can replace it with another one he likes, but suitable in design. Fastening the profile is similar to fastening the racks, using glue and dowels. With the top profile, you can simplify everything and “plant” it only with glue, it will also stick well, but it will be a little hacky, it’s better, of course, to strengthen the connection with dowels. It will be more durable this way.

If desired and if possible, racks and columns can be made from turned wooden parts. Only with such a turned part you will have to plan a small plane along the entire length to make it more convenient to attach it to the side of the backrest.

Making a small headboard for a double bed uses the same techniques as a large one. The difference is that the front backrest is connected to the side frames using eccentric couplers and instead of through holes for the confirmation, couplings are installed for attaching the minifix rod. . Minifixes are needed so that no elements of this fastening protrude onto the front, visible part of the backrest. It’s easier with the backrest; the hats of the confirmats, although visible, are located at the back and usually face the wall.

3. Tsargi. Longitudinal parts of the bed frame. The drawing is the same for both the left and the right drawer.

If the household has high-quality lumber or sheets of laminated chipboard, it is much cheaper to assemble a wooden bed with your own hands than to buy a finished product at a furniture store. We bring to your attention several different projects and manufacturing instructions.

Design options - drawings and diagrams

For a skilled owner, the process of assembling a bed will not be a particular problem. Regardless of the type of product, the design is a power frame supported by legs and equipped with restrictive elements - a headboard and a backrest. The mattress is supported by transverse slats - lamellas.

Note. If necessary, the sleeping place can be supplemented with drawers, a lifting mechanism and side stops.

There are several bed options available for making at home:

• classic single;
• double;
• two-tier;
• a variety of cribs.

The most popular option is a soft double bed. Even a simple factory product assembled from laminated chipboard costs a lot of money. You can independently build a more reliable and cheaper wooden structure, shown in the drawing.

A budget version of a double bed, made from 16 mm thick laminated chipboard, is shown in the following diagram. Wood-based sheets in this design simultaneously play the role of legs, backs and stiffeners. The mattress tray does not have to be made from laminated chipboard; boards will also do.

Advice. Before you make a bed with your own hands, clearly decide on the dimensions. It is better to be guided by the mattress that you are going to buy. The minimum dimensions of the sleeping place are 190 x 150 cm.

The design of a single bed, assembled from solid wood, is similar to a double bed, only smaller in size. The product consists of a frame and two backrests with legs; the orthopedic mattress is placed on transverse slats, as shown in the sketch.

A two-story wooden bed, shown in the drawing below, will help save space in a small room. Its base is 4 racks made of timber, connected by two boxes and additional stiffeners. The structure can be assembled from chipboard, but the material consumption will be too large, since you will need a solid back wall made of a single sheet.

Assembling a double bed

The easiest and cheapest way to make bedroom furniture is from wood - the material can be easily processed and decorated in a style that matches the design of the room. If you are an experienced craftsman who constantly works with metal, you can make the version with forged products shown in the photo.

We propose to assemble a simple wooden bed designed for two adults. Dimensions - 220 x 180 cm, internal dimensions for a high spring mattress - 2100 x 1700 mm. The design of the headboard is arbitrary; it is not necessary to repeat the decor shown in the photo.

Advice. It is also not necessary to repeat our instructions exactly. Select the dimensions individually and sketch out your own drawing according to your wishes. Keep in mind one subtlety: if you design the structure too low (or without legs), then it will not be easy to remove dust under it.

Preparing materials

To assemble a box with a pallet, which acts as a frame, you will need the following materials:

• 15 blanks 220 cm long from dried timber 5 x 5 cm;
• 20 two-meter boards with a section of 120 x 20 mm;
• furniture glue (PVA is also suitable);
• zinc coated wood screws 3.5 x 40 and 3.5 x 65 mm;
• stain, clear varnish and brush.

Before assembly, surfaces and ends must be thoroughly sanded.

In addition to standard carpentry tools, it is advisable to acquire a grinding machine, or, in extreme cases, purchase an attachment for a drill. Boards and beams should be cut to the specified dimensions and all front parts of the timber should be sanded in advance.

Procedure

To create a frame from side panels 15 cm high, you need to fasten the beams together in 3 pieces, and then connect them using the tongue-and-groove method. The progress of making a double bed with your own hands looks like this:

Advice. Place 1-2 additional legs on the central panel to support the middle part of the bed.

When making a backrest at the headboard, show your imagination. You can make an unusual carved headrest attached to the wall, or assemble the backrest from sanded boards and varnish it. Watch the video for a master class on how to assemble a double bed yourself:

A single bed is made in a similar way, only without a central crosspiece. There is an alternative option: make 2 single beds with separate mattresses - if necessary, they can be moved together to create a full double bed.

Soft covering and installation of the lifting mechanism

To make the back of the product comfortable and similar to a sofa, you can make it from ordinary chipboard and make it upholstered with soft upholstery. Measure the finished panel and buy the required amount of foam rubber 10-20 mm thick plus upholstery fabric. The covering is done as follows:

Note. The upholstery technique will help to refine a bed made of chipboard. The assembly technology is simple: drawers and backs are cut out, which are then fastened with corners and screws. The supporting part of the mattress is made of wooden slats, as described above.

A folding bed allows you to store bed linen, pillows and other things inside the bed. What you need to do:

To organize an internal cabinet, it is advisable to make a pallet from sheets of plywood or fiberboard attached to the frame elements. How such a bed is made is described in the following video:

Useful and original additions

The folding bed, which has to be raised and lowered, can be replaced with drawers made from scrap materials - boards, chipboard or plywood. To implement your idea, you need to purchase a special furniture set, including wheels, guides and fasteners.

There is a more original solution - installing a homemade bed on a high podium and installing ordinary opening cabinets underneath it. For ease of climbing, a ladder is attached to the side of the fence, as shown in the diagram.

A transformable bed is an excellent functional solution for a cramped apartment or country house with small rooms. The idea is as follows: the bed is removed together with the mattress inside a wall-mounted chest of drawers or transformed into a cabinet using powerful lifting mechanisms. The task is complicated by the purchase of such devices and proper installation, which is best left to a specialist.

If you wish, you can implement a newfangled design sophistication - decorate the bed with a canopy. The photo shows an example of a double bed surrounded by high posts, which are united at the top by crossbars. The design is extremely clear - a spatial frame is assembled from bars, onto which translucent fabric is thrown.

Conclusion

The design of a homemade bed can be improved endlessly - making several tiers, adding bedside tables and shelves, changing the traditional shape to a round one, and so on. It all depends on the level of your skill, the availability of materials and imagination. The area of ​​the room plays an important role - it is difficult to place a large bed inside a small room. For such cases, 2-tier beds were invented, whose assembly is the topic of a separate publication.
